So here's the thing: I made a TWRP backup of my 16GB nexus before I returned it yesterday (multitouch issues, dead pixels) but see now that people are reporting an OTA update that fixes the multitouch issue. I would rather not restore that backup since it is the JSS15J system, so is there a way I can get the data of at least a few apps and restore them individually somehow?
Thanks!
Titanium Backup can do that.

Ok, can it read the data in the TWRP folder? I have used TB a lot in the past but didn't think it might be able to use the TWRP data.
If it's not compressed (I never do), TiBu can do it perfectly.
In Titanium backup pro in it's menu is the option to 'extract from nandroid backup' .
Did it just last week, so I know the current version works.

Use Nandroid Backup Manager. It's free.
It can restore apps and/or data, SMS messages, Call logs and more from your nandroid backup. It can also decompress the backup if it's compressed.
Advance Restore and just click restore data only on twrp

Good day: Are you indicating that TWRP has an advanced restore feature?
Advance Restore and just click restore data only on twrp ????
I don't see any advanced menu in TWRP (Looks like all or nothing)?
Or, did you mean that Nandroid Manager has an advanced menu?

TWRP backups each partition separately, thus it can also restore any single partition so also /data

Of course. TWRP has no advanced backup&restore features because it doesn't need them: you will be prompted before each backup&restore action about the partitions.
For data of just single apps use better Titanium Backup. It can extract them from your nandroid backups

I think some of the gapps data is flashed to system, so it won't be able to completely restore it but after flashing gapps, you should be able to extract google apps with data intact from TWRP backup

Exactly what I do.
marsmallow 6 will update apps + data from your google account. Not sure it's fully implemented yet but it's supposed to work. I've tried it yesterday with a Mm6.0.1 on nexus 7 2013 and many apps were already configured. Not all of them. Going from MM6 to MM6.0.1 might complicate it so maybe it's better to restore with google and do a little work by yourself, to make sure. I gave up on those restore apps. It also give you the opportunity to do a clean up

I'm sure somebody is already aware of this;just sharing coz this awed me![emoji33]
You need to ..extract/restore individual data files from nandroid backup?
Restore data to an app when switching between ROMs or OS versions?
Well TWRP IS THE ONLY THING YOU NEED! And a PC of course.
Bless the Devs[emoji7][emoji28]
Forget Nan managers, tar.extractors & the insanely complex Bash terminal commands
1. Go to File manager on TWRP recovery, it can read the system data i.e. data/data/ file (while your other file managers can, only data files on SD or ext.SD)
2.Go to data/data and locate the data folder of the app you wish to extract; will be in the format 'com.app name'
3.Push 'Select folder' tab on the screen; it gives you option to COPY the file
4.Move up & paste the data/data file on your readable memmory: sd/ext.SD
And that's it!! Just connect to the PC & pull the file & there u have: your APP DATA FILE!
I was tired using zip extractors, changing file names & struggling with command prompts; then found this[emoji4]
Hope it helps[emoji106]

And believe me, I could repack the data into my new ROM just like that!
Not sure if this messes up with your system but I'm going great so far.
So you Upgraded to a higher OS and find some of your apps to be crashing on your new ROM & have a nandroid of your stock:
You are going to switch data files between stock & custom ROM!
1.Flash the Stock ROM & copy app data from the system files to readable memory, as mentioned above, just add a letter & Rename the copy(which again you can do with TWRP!) so that TWRP may not confuse with the new folder
2.Flash the new ROM, uninstall the app that crashes & install the compatible version from the store
3.Allow storage permission from settings; open the app & perform some action so that a storage directory is created,if not already, in the system storage
4.Boot to TWRP recovery in the new ROM , so now you have the data/data folder of the new app you just installed(which is empty) as well as the data/data folder from your stock ROM on your SD/Ext.SD
5. You know were this is going[emoji16] Delete the data/data folder on your running ROM & MOVE(again with TWRP only!) the one from SD ,after restoring its original name, to the data folder from were you just deleted the other.
6.Wipe Dalvik/caches & reboot
7. Other than receiving a pop up that there may be some trouble with your android system, on startup, everything works just fine for me & the App is fully restored!![emoji7]
Didn't even use a PC!!
Such a tool TWRP is[emoji7][emoji120][emoji120][emoji120]
Forgive me, but try this at your own risk, coz as a newbie Im completely unaware of the consequences
Hope this helps somebody[emoji4]

Hey guys here,
I've got a problem with my OnePlus 5T a while now. I used to make weekly nandroid backup (ye im rooted), but about 3 weeks ago the backup of the data partition via TWRP stopped working. Every other partition works, but data dont. Now i want to test a custom rom and wanna be able to switch back to oos without losing data.
I got the error
Code:
createTarFork() process ended with ERROR: 255
in twrp, so I pulled the recovery log via adb and i got this:
pastebin (dot) com/7Vvfx7sM
Sorry for the link, the ****ty outside link detection system found some links in my log
If I should provide more data tell me, I hope you can help me!
Greetings,
tooxo
This might be because of Parallel apps. See below links for more info.
krumbman0wnz said:

data/system/999
data/system_ce/999
data/misc/999
data/misc_ce/999
data/user/999
data/user_ce/999
This will allow you to do a backup, but you'll get "extractTarFork() process ended with ERROR=255' when trying to restore. So it feels kind useless, unless someone can figure this out.

I could resolve my nandroid /data backup error on my EMUI 8.0 Mediapad M5 device with those following steps:
1 - Use a correct TWRP implementation
TWRP need to access the uncyphered partition /data.
There no possibility to backup it, if TWRP does not implement deciphering user data partition.
2 - Remove all users except user 0 (the administrator)
You can verify that there is no unwanted users, looking at directory /data/user : the only subdirectory should be "0".
To remove the others users :
Remove the PrivateSpace if you have one (Settings > Security & Privacy > PrivateSpace, and tap on the garbage can).
Remove all the secondary users (Settings > Users & accounts > users, and tap on each users to delete them). Keep just the main administrator user.
On EMUI, remove all twins applications (Settings > Apps & Notifications > App Twin, and disable all twin apps).
On OxygenOS, remove all parallel apps (Settings > Apps > Parallel Apps, and disable all parallel apps).
On MIUI, remove all dual apps (Settings > Dual Apps, and disable all dual apps)
On others devices ... you must find all parameters that create those unwanted users.
If you are not able to get the correct settings to suppress those users, in last resort you can try this command : "pm remove-user user-no. (For example "pm remove-user 999").
3 - Do not forget to protect your backups by a password
This would be stupid to cipher your /data partition and keep backups of this partition unprotected.
These steps fixed the nandroid backup problem for /data partition on my Huawei Mediapad M5 device.
I post on this forum because I hope that this will be helpful for others devices owners.
Hello
This is a TWRP recovery for Motorola Moto G5 Cedric for arm64 ROMS, with encryption support, backup support for persist and efs partitions and possibility to flash/backup logo boot image.
I need review and test, especially for the storage decryption and/with LineageOS fingers-crossed. I was able to test it on my device (XT1676 3Go).
It is my first ROM so it is possible that there are bugs.
- Be carefull, there are problems with the backup system :
Just wish to come here and tell you guys to AVOID using this recovery, it seems to have a serious bug.
I just backed up my entire data partition (and enable digest verification) and restored the partition afterwards and the phone didn't boot.
Then I tried restoring it with verification enabled and the hashes didn't match.
In other words, for some reason, the generated backup was corrupt.

I have backup up data partition from my TWRP, reboot one time to recovery, restore the data backup with digest verification, and reboot to LineageOS, with no problem (my rom is LineageOS 16.0 without encryption.)
I think there may be 2 errors (maybe more) :
1) There is a problem with data restore when encryption is enable. I can not test this scenario for now, but i will do it as soon as i can
2) Was your backup stored on your SD card? if so, it is possible that the sd card may be damaged, because it is too old or of poor quality (more info here : https://photo.stackexchange.com/questions/40489/what-causes-an-sd-card-to-go-corrupt )
if you have other information or other ideas, do not hesitate to share it!
if people want to participate, try to save the data partition and restore it, especially with the encrypted partition :good::good:
be careful, make a backup of your data before test

I agree it may be any of the 2 problems.
My data partition was indeed encrypted, and yes, my SD card is not what I would call genuine, though I think that's not the case since the card is relatively new and I never had any problem related to data corruption.
Anyways, thanks for your effort.

forgot password to decrypt??
hi,
first, sorry if this is the wrong place to post this. right now, when i install the 64 bit twrp i am asked for a password to decrypt my data. i have tried some passwords i think i would have used, but those don't work and i get a message also saying that the default password didn't work - i haven't typed a default password, though, so i assume there is a default one that twrp tries automatically. in the past, i did try a rom requiring 64 bit twrp and i am guessing i set a password other then the default to encrypt/decrypt, but i went back to stock without issues so have not thought about the password and cannot remember what i would have used. i wanted to try dotos on my phone, which i assume requires 64 twrp because i got error 255 when i tried to flash without twrp64. so i installed twrp64 but cannot get any further. so here are my questions:
is there any way to decrypt the data if i forgot my password?
if not, can i format the data while encrypted to install the new rom? if i can do that, what should i back up? i have pictures and other necessary files backed up, so i am not worried about completely wiping the phone to start over. however, should i back anything else up before formatting? do i need to worry about losing imei or losing any partitions that would make phone inoperable or not have any signal? should i back up with twrp64 or the non-64 bit twrp currently installed? any help or point in the right direction is greatly appreciated.

You need to format data
Push back button when it asks for decrypt
Goto wipe and select the option on the right to format data
This will erase everything on internal storage so copy any files you want to keep to pc first (pictures music etc)
Once formatted data restart back to recovery to check encryption has been removed and data partition is mountable
TWRP backups do not save personal files (pictures music etc) They only backup data and system files (and other named partitions)
Once you have flashed a new rom you can encrypt again if you want to via the security settings menu in phone settings

Backup efs if you want to preserve your current emei state or need to restore it in future
I got a new device by RMA and now I want to copy my nandroid backup made with TWRP to the new one.
Which partitions do I have to copy?
Most of the partitions are system based, so don't touch them. All you would want to copy is data, but I am not even sure that would work, without a boot loop? I keep all my data backed up with Titanium. And Google drive would restore most of what you had on your phone as long as you were allowing setting>system>backup.

Data, as it is the one where your settings and app updates are stored. Just be sure the new device is running the same version of Android as the old.

Restoring a nandroid backup of the data partition to another, identical, device will work without causing a bootloop given the precautions I describe above. Do note however that Google's backup only restores items acquired through the Play Store. Alternative app stores such as Amazon will not be restored, apps acquired through Amazon will not be restored, and any apps sideloaded will not be restored. Since Google's restore function doesn't restore everything, any backup solution - like a nandroid backup - is going to be a better alternative.

Thanks for the clarification that you can restore data as long as you are on the same version, does it have to be at the same security update level as well?
That is why I use Titanium for apps I got off of Fdroid and other sources. I will make sure I try the Nandroid data backup next time.
Security level shouldn't make a difference, but that is not something I have attempted. The pair of identical tablets I have here are running the same security update.

I am having the same problem with the fingerprint reader after restoring data from one phone to another, what files did you delete in TWRP file manager?
Solution for fingerprinter:
1. Boot into TWRP
2. Go to advanced>filemanager to acces the files in your phone.
3. Enter the folder /data/system/user/0
4. Delete following files: ./fpdata/user.db, settings_fingerprint.xml
5. Reboot to system and set up new fingerprints with the fingerprint wizard
6. Everything should work normal
Was not easy to find, but it's easy to do

Turns out this is a bug in Android Q. With Pie there were some many notifications that I set my sound to none, so I just set my sound to Gibbon Call, and now I get text notifications. :good:
I have googled this but not getting a clear answer so hoping someone here can confirm.
I am switching from a OnePlus7T to a Nord and I was just wondering what the best option is for transferring my apps and content etc from 7T to Nord.
Last time I went from OP6 to OP7T I did the google restore on the 7T and then also ran the Switch app.
But I ended with lots of duplicate stuff like contacts and other stuff (can't remember what else was duplicated)
So, should I just install Switch onto the Nord - but don't Google Restore and then just run Switch? Will that do everything?
Or is there a better approach?
With my previous non OnePlus phones I would just use Google and some other SMS + Call History restore app and then do other stuff manually.
Thanks.
Hi harryw66, i think the switch app is the better solution as Google Backup doesn't backup everything.
Thanks - I received the phone earlier today and went the Google router - seems to have backed up most stuff - but not my folders etc - so guess I will have to do them manually - just need to be sure the other stuff does not get duplicated...

I use..
- SMS Backup & Restore by Sync Tech to backup messages and call logs and it never failed since first use many years ago. Also it has Google Drive backup, auto delete old messages in drive,.. etc.
- SMS organizer by Microsoft as SMS app. It is the best SMS app I used and still using, though it failed a couple of times in backing up the SMSs.
- Titanium Backup to backup all my apps with data daily.
- SyncMe Wireless by bvaisoft for backing up my entire phone contents to my PC after midnight, daily, including Titanium Backup data.
- To clear the storage space taken by Titanium Backup, the Tasker will delete all these contents at early morning.
I've been using these settings for years, though restoring about half number of apps' data didn't work well with Titanium Backup with 7T. So I used OnePlus switch to copy these apps, but without their data.
Thanks - yes I ended up using SMS Backup & Restore by Sync Tech to backup from old phone and restore onto the Nord.
I used to use SMS Backup+ from Jan Berkel with great sucess in the past - but this seems to be broken now due to Google auth changes...
Cheers.
Quick way to back up. If only we could direct this to an OTG?

Into "Switch" app there is an option to do a local backup.
Once done, copy that file to a pendrive.

I use Titanium Backup, and my files go directly to the OTG. Just how much better of a backup is the one plus switch? Can you incrementally restore apps and data?

Sorry, I use Google's backup
OnePlus Switch doesn't backup everything. It didnt back up files in Downloads or documents, unless it was an image, or video.
App Data is random. Works for some apps but not for all.
