Sudden battery drop - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Good morning all. I have owned this device for a few weeks now and am enjoying it immensely. I bought it second hand from swappa. The warranty/ownership was transferred to my name.
Twice in the past few days I have had significant battery drain. The level indicated 60% when I started running. I watch Netflix or the like for 45 minutes or so then I get the battery saver notification telling me I am down to about 5%. It makes me worried that this happened more than once.
I am wondering, should I suspect faulty hardware/battery? And if so, should I rma? I attempted to clean flash October factory images with no improvement.
Thanks and have a nice day.

I would install Accubattery and let the phone go through a few full charging sessions. Try to start charging above 20%. Don't take the phone off the charger until the APP tells you the phone is full. You will notice the phone continues to charge even after the PHONE says it is 100%. Once you have done this a few times you will see your battery's estimated remaining capacity as compared with a new battery under the Health tab. It will show you both the mAh and percentage. This will rule out the battery. If the battery is good (eg. >90%) then try a factory reset. Might as well wait a few days until we get the November security update on the 5th. Good luck.

I have faced the same issue since 3-4 days...the battery is draining a lot faster.

How do I find out what is draining my battery?

Hello all I have been having serious battery drains e.g. Screen time on is 3 hours but total battery life is 10 hours. Before I was getting close to 20 hours with about 4 hours screen on time. I have gsam battery monitor but I am not seeing anything abnormal that is draining it.
I've also been leaving it on the charger for probably 10+ hours frequently, I know that li ion batteries aren't supposed to be affected by this but could this somehow be causing my shortened battery life?
I've had the same problem since this last update. Lay night I did a factory reset which did not resolve the issue. According to cpu spy, the phone is not going into deep sleep at all.

Mine has been going down since lollipop. I'm hoping the new moto x will be much better, we will see I guess. I've had enough of samsung's crap on the note 4.
The only thing I can suggest is have Verizon replace the phone. They had to replace my phone till I got one that finally operated successfully snd good battrry life. It took till my 4th phone, but since then I am LP 5.0.1 build number ending in OF1. I get about 14 hours on a single charge with 5-6 hours of on screen time.

Unfortunately I bought my phone on swappa so I can't do that.

sudden complete battery drain

Hey folks, I've had my Moto Z Play since November of 2016, and so far have been enjoying fantastic batter life - generally around 8 - 10 hours over 2 or 3 days.
However, I had a nasty surprise a couple of days ago.
I charged the phone to 63% before I went to bed, and then turned it off. When I turned it on in the morning, it drained over the course of around 5 minutes (browsing reddit using swipe) to 14%. By the time I checked what was going on it was at 9%, and it had reached 7% before I decided to turn the thing off. Fun times.
I plugged the phone in with it still powered off, and it leaped straight from 7% back to 63% reported charge. Mighty strange eh.
I've not had this exact issue again, but I am concerned as my battery life seems to be significantly reduced when I compare it to before the incident. Watching youtube videos I am draining about 1% / 5 minutes, as opposed to the 1% / 10 minutes that I was getting previously.
There don't seem to be any rogue apps running, and I am slowly uninstalling anything that was recently updated, although I feel this is unlikely to be related to the issue.
I am unrooted, running the nov. security update in the UK. I have been charging using an Anker brand cable and power brick.
I was wondering if anybody else has had a similar issue to this? Thanks for reading, have a good day people.
With it jumping back up I'm thinking it's a software glitch. I'd back up my data, do a full data wipe /factory reset and see if that helps. If not, then time to call up Lenovo for a warranty repair.
thanks for that - yeah I agree, reckon I'll wipe and see how I go for a week or so. I bought through a good retailer in the UK, so hopefully getting action on a repair shouldn't be too much of an issue if it comes down to it.
Without much knowledge of how the technology works, it sounds to me like it's either a software glitch as you suggest, or potentially a bad battery.
Yep, those were my first two thoughts. Good luck with it!

I was on a pace to get something like that yesterday - but I had to go to sleep so I could get up for work. Had 8:40 SoT over 17h off charger, with 46% left. If I could have stayed awake all night I might have made it! ?

Brand new Pixel XL battery drain?

Hi, my Pixel XL arrived last night (got it very cheap brand new) and today, the battery seems very bad. I've installed the 8.0 OTA and 2 security updates since last night and installed all the apps I need (had no issues with the same apps on my 6P) however, the phone doesn't seem to be dozing properly and seems to be draining fairly fast. When I took the phone out of the box, it was at 52% and I drained that all while updating and setting it up, with 2 hours and a half SOT. However, today, I am on a data connection, with an hour of SOT and at 65% battery.
Do I need to give it time to settle? Seems odd to me...
Thanks

I would definitely give it time to settle. If your worried about the drain you can check battery usage with an app like AccuBattery. Also some apps have not been optimized for Oreo yet. If your still seeing this in a week I would start to get more proactive on figuring out a reason why.

Gotcha. So is it not worth factory resetting yet then?
I suppose if it still is bad, I could revert back to 7.1.1 after a week. And at the very worst, I can return it within 30 days. (I don't want to return it though!!)

1) Your experience with draining 50% of battery charge while installing new OS and 2 security updates plus apps with SOT of 2.5 hours is not unusual. Just having the screen on for 2.5 hours should drain between 35 and 55% of battery of XL depending on brightness and screen content. Add to the fact that many files need to be moved in the process, and that adds even more battery drain.
2) However, an hour of SOT should not drain your battery for more than 15-25%.
3) I don't think modern Li-Ion or Li-Po batteries "settle." They are very carefully crafted, calibrated and tested at the factory. Their voltages are very consistent with regard to their capacities.
4) What you need to do is figure out what drained your battery by simply looking at the Battery page of Settings. If your biggest drain is from Phone Idle, then perhaps you are in a low cellular signal area - the phone uses more cellular chip power in such areas to maintain connection to cellular towers, and that drains significantly more battery. If your biggest drain is from Android System, you may have a rogue app that keeps your phone awake when it shouldn't. It may also be a combination of the two.

Explainable terrible battery life on Note 8. Anyone know why?

So about a month ago, I used to get about 40hrs of battery life with a single charge. Also, the overnight drain was about 3-5%. This was great and normal.
Suddenly, it's been a month since my phone drains like crazy. 20-25% overnight drain, and an always steep slope down battery plot. In fact, the plot indicates no flat regions. I'm sure it is not a third party application that's draining my battery, as the issue persists even right after a full factory reset.
I have attached two figures, one for the battery and for from the Naptime application that shows the doze times and supposedly blocks wake-locks. Still, huge drain. These figures are taken 9 hours after a fresh factory reset, with nothing new installed on the phone expect Naptime.
I've looked so many places and tried many different things. Can someone help me understand what's going on? I'm running N950U1EUE3BRA5 firmware if that makes any difference.

Well since introduced out tablets have had to do power resets time to time to clear battery data. It's been an ongoing issue since Kit Kat upgrades from JB.
Since your device is 3 years old now, i assume the battery is bad. Very few have their original battery. I suggest checking on ebay, or dispute the transaction in that the item is not as described. Does not hold charge. You should get your money back. PS your 3 year old Note 8.0 should only be $50 at most. I got my new AT &T version new back when for $150 no contract no service, and my wifi variant for the same $150 US shipped about 6 months after release.

April 5 patch battery

Is anyone else getting battery drainage since the April 5th update? Before I could go the whole day and every once in a while get to 10% but now my phone has already dropped 5% in 15 mins with minimal usage.
Try factory reset

Update. Google acknowledges and has received several complaints about battery drain with update. They gave me a 15.00 credit for the Google store.

Yes, I am. Getting horribly battery with phone doing nothing.
Yeah battery on my pixel has gone from averaging 5-6 hours SOT to now 3-4 hours with same use.
How did you manage to get the 15 play store credit KevTN?
I had horrible battery drain after applying the April update as well. After clearing cache for Google, Google Play Store and Google Play services (I think this is the primary culprit) my battery life returned to normal. I suspect all Google needs to do is clear cache for all of their services after they update. Seems like a reasonable thing to automate anyway.

I just called them to ask about battery drainage and they gave the 15 for my inconvenience. Actually I did a live chat with P2xl support.
Glad its not just me. Battery is terrible now
Ditto. I wondered about the battery drain. Glad it's not just me.
I just got the phone with this update preinstalled. Really disappointed with the battery life compared to my old 6s Plus. Can't get past 3 hours SOT ... I hope it gets fixed or in going back as poor battery life was the reason I left android a few years ago
The battery drain was apparent for me one day as well. I could watch the battery percentage fall as I used the phone. It took 2 or 3 reboots, but now it's back to normal. However it only happened that one day and it was nearly 2 weeks after the April update. So I'm not sure what the true cause was.
I hope Google fixes it quickly this is almost as bad as my 6P before I replaced it
Factory reset fixed it for me
My phone I have noticed over the April patch as well has not been getting good battery life at all. I hope they fix it in the May update. Because it is a great phone. But battery life is horrible now.

I had bad battery life because of the AOD. After turning off AOD, I again have a very good battery runtime (>6h of SoT).
Before the April patch I haven't used AOD, so I cannot say whether it was better before, though...
What's aod thanks

Ambient On Display. It's when the clock is always on your screen even when the phone is locked. Go to settings- battery- ambient display to turn it off.
Okay thank you so much. I do already have that off. It's crazy it says one minute of screen time it goes down to 99%
Just noticed my device dropped 6% in about ~10 minutes of screen on time...
I really don't want to do an RMA since this unit has virtually no blue shift or other major issues other users are experiencing.
Mine is doing pretty fine
I'll admit it was worse before i did factory reset
Cheers ?
