Cannot boot twrp from fastboot - Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro Questions & Answers

Dear developers,
I had unlocked my redmi note 5 pro 2 months ago. Recently I faced a issue that my potrait mode was not working in PE Extended 9.0 based rom then I swited to Global beta Miui Rom. After that my twrp was gone and if i wanted to move to twrp by fastboot by typing the commands:
Fastboot boot twrp.img
It showed:
Downloading 'boot.img'
FAILED (command write failed (Invalid Argument))
Finished
Additional: I want to state that i upgraded my pc from intel to ryzen R5 2400G. But i installed adb setup, platform tool and mi flash.
Please try to resolve my problem because I hate miui just hate it.

same problem here!

TWRP ?
Hi everyone !
So I tryed to install CM on my Asus zenfone (Z00UD) and everything worked with no problems until the fastboo oem reboot-recovery.
So I tryed to reboot while pressing the VOLUME DOWN key and i get to the original recovery mode.
My phone is still booting to the usual android when I boot without going in recovery.
So I guess TWRP flash didn't worked as excepted, but i remember it showing completed.
Is there a way to verify that TWRP isn't installed so i can re install it ?
Or is it another problem ?

Instead of replacing the recovery.img by the twrp.img name jus replace "recovery" with the file name that you have downloaded!!!!

I used dl.twrp.me/Z00T/ recovery (to get the latest), and I replaced "recovery.img" by "twrp-3.0.2-5-Z00T.img" in the fastboot comand line. I also put "twrp-3.0.2-5-Z00T.img" in the same folder as "recovery.img".
Should I try again the process with the recovery.img ?
Is it safe to try again to flash the recovery ? (I didn't try again the process because I don't know if it's safe)

oxygen OS 4.0 no twrp possible

Installed oxygen OS 4.0 everything seems to become OK
but after flashing twrp 3.0.2 to the phone it is just hanging in a black screen.
I tried several twrp alternatives from XDA: always same result.
After some seconds up to some minutes it is possible to reboot but no twrp has been flashed.
The twrp 3.0.2 works fine in the old version of OS oxygen

Hi, you can fix it. Flash OnePlus3_OpenBeta7-FIRMWARE+MODEM-flashable.zip
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=457095661767116249
I use this twrp and works!
You need PC to see youre phone in FASTBOOT. ADB + drivers instaled.
Reboot youre phone in Fastboot (Boot loader), then flash recovery. After flashing reboot to recovery.

I'd like to know some details before installing:
FIRMWARE+MODEM what is this? Is firmware the whole oxygen OS? Modem is for mobile connection like LTE?
What are the advantages in comparison of using the originals?
Can you give me the origin of the twrp you attached?

I think I did exactly what you described. But nothing in the newly flashed TWRP resulted must in a black screen.
Install the modified TWRP v 3.0.2.1-28. Search in XDA you should find it. Flash it and boot into recovery. I installed it and flashed OOS 4.0 OTA through this recovery. Everything is working fine.
Black screen means you did not flash it.
Open Command Promt. Type:
fastboot flash recovery "recovery".img. (name of the recovery between commas)
reboot bootloader.
reboot to recovery.
Because we don't have any twrp updated to support Nougat oos roms. The ones we have can only read decrypted storage. I'm too waiting for someone to pick up the development and build an updated twrp.
Flashing this one works

Yeah, I noticed that too, after writing the comment.
For me though, I only needed to create the Nandroid backup and flash SuperSU, so I flashed the recovery, cancelled the decryption, formatted the data (removing the encryption), adb push'd the zip and installed it.
Any idea how I can turn the encryption back on now?
@RoFrie I originally had the same problem as you but with the difference that my phone was on OOS 3.2.8 and it upgrade to N. after that I tried TWRP but the phone would replace it every time I rebooted. Once I got the right TWRP I can boot to it but the internal drive was encrypted so TWRP was useless. I said forget this crap I'm going back to CM14.1. And as always I felt that I had to get this done. So once on CM14.1 I used TWRP to switch the file system to s2fs flash OOS3.2.8 than I let it do the upgrade yet again. This time when I flashed the TWRP .28 the phones was no longer encrypted,I rooted than its all good now.

I also was wondering everytime i came to this forum, why no developer yet did not showup here. Is asus not devs friendly.. i am planning to buy it but only after i will see some hope of custom rom development.

I am also checking 5z forums daily
Asus have launched kernel sources and it is project treble supported and custom rom development is easy so looking forward for some development to start:crying::crying::crying:
i was planning to buy this phone as i wanted to flash resurrection remix but guess have to wait
The phone released recently, and very late in the year. Most devs are on treble phones, or ones like the OnePlus 6. The phone is probably treble compliant, so in theory owners can use any treble ROM.

Yes I have unlocked bootloader. I used official asus apk
Then downloaded twrp-3.2.1-0-X00Q-20180508.img
Next fastboot flash boot recovery.img and fastboot flash recovery recovery.img - I saw Bootloader Version is empty
Now I dont know how I have older bootloader version WW_user_80.11.37.53 but I do not have twrp.
Edit: Please use my updated guide:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone-5z/how-to/guide-zenfone-5z-how-to-root-downgrade-t3815877
Here is what i did to root the 5Z ZS620KL:
1. Download the unlock app AND the installed firmware from asus:
download
2. Install adb and fastboot
download
3. Copy the app to the phone, start it and follow the on screen instructions > bootloader unlocked
Warning: When booting the phone you will now see a warning message!
4. Unzip the downloaded firmware and use a tool to extract the boot.img from the payload.bin. I used payload_dumper.
download
5. Copy the extracted boot.img from payload_output folder to the 5z.
6. Download magisk manager app from the officiall thread on xda, install it and use it to patch the boot.img on your phone (install>install>patch boot.img)
download
7. Copy the patched_boot.img back to your computer (the original boot.img will be approx 65mb the patched one approx 19mb)
8. Start your phone in fasboot mode (hold "power + volume up" to switch on your phone). You will see "FastBoot Mode" in red letters on screen. Connect your phone to the computer using the usb cable.
9. Open a command line and check if your phone is recognized by executing:
Code:
fastboot devices
You should see the serial number of your phone.
10. Change to the path where you copied your patched_boot.img and use fastboot to flash the patched_boot.img to your device:
Code:
fastboot flash boot patched_boot.img
11. Start your phone from the fastboot menu using volume up/down and power to select.
Bugs/problems:
- You will see three warning messages while booting, at least i do. One for the unlocked bootloader and the next one comes twice saying "There is an internal problem with your device. Contact your manufacturer for details." which you have to confirm.
- I used the latest stable Magisk V16.0 + Manager V5.8 and Magisk hide is not working. It does not save the apps marked for hide. Maybe some write error?
I have purchased zenfone 5Z but it's model number on box is ZS621KL. I see the guide posted for rooting and TWRP install is for ZS620KL. is this same guide applicable to my model as well or this is a different version something like zenfone 5 and Not zenfone 5 Z

Why would you erase the system? Were you trying to flash another ROM or something?
---------- Post added at 11:05 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:03 AM ----------
You'll most likely need to re-flash a stock image.
https://developers.google.com/android/images
Fastboot flash your bootloader, radio then vendor on both slots then try again.

Make sure adb and fastboot are installed
Download and extract taimen factory image
Double click to open
Extract the taimen folder found in the factory image. That has the vendor image
Open terminal and type adb devices to make sure you have adb connected. Boot to bootloader
Here's the commands, after the command hit space then drag and drop the image hit enter.
Fastboot flash bootloader_a (bootloader)
Reboot bootloader
Same command but with _b
Then radio and vendor same way rebooting bootloader after each flash
Now you can use that taimen folder you extracted. Drag and drop same as images
Fastboot update (taimen folder)
It'll take a few minutes to do it's thing

before using C to C
then using C to A still problem
now using C to A but using usb hub because this LEGION gaming laptop All usb 3.0
:crying::crying::crying:
now just wanna try to install TWRP
Download twrp.IMG
Fastboot boot (twrp.img)
Go to settings and disable screen timeout and the swipe to install twrp app. Don't need it.
You can flash a stock ota on twrp.
Put whatever you need on a type c thumb drive (stock ota, twrp installer zip, roms) and mount it in twrp.
Just keep in mind if you are going backwards, you'll have to format data.

Question Need help, Can't figure out how to change my ROM

Exactly a year ago I bought Poco F3, unlocked the bootloader and installed ArrowOS. Now I'm trying to figure out how to change my ROM and I can't really find any answers. I have the ArrowOS recovery and it's useless, I can't install another recovery with it. My fastboot also seems to be broken(?), it has a different logo and it's detected on my computer when I do (fastboot devices) but other than that it gives me a bunch of errors
I would like to at least know how to change the recovery. Is it possible that my bootloader got locked? One last thing, when I installed ArrowOS I used TWRP and updated it using OTA updates, now TWRP is gone.
Please help me
You need fastboot for TWRP.
It could not have gotten locked, no.

I just found a guide on Youtube for flashing twrp and I followed it to the (fastboot boot <TWRP>) part and I got this error
Sending 'boot.img' (196608 KB) FAILED (remote: 'Download is not allowed on locked devices')
fastboot: error: Command failed
Does this mean it got locked..?
Uh….maybe… did you lock it… what does it say in dev Setting sunder oem unlock.

I don't have any oem unlock option in ArrowOS and I never locked anything wtf, I just used it as a normal phone and only did OTA updates + sometimes FW updates when required
Is there anyway to fix it?
ADB & Fastboot Binaries: https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/platform-tools
OrangeFox Recovery (recommended): https://orangefox.download/device/alioth
Install the Recovery ZIP by either ADB Sideload in ArrowOS Recovery
or you can extract the "recovery.img" and fastboot boot it ("fastboot boot recovery.img") and select "Install current Recovery"
Then you simply flash the ROM.zip (select "Reflash Recovery after ROM Flash") -> Reboot Recovery -> Format Data
The OTA Update has replaced your TWRP with ArrowOS Recovery, because ROM Updates replace the boot-partition (along with other system related partitions). The boot-partition contains the recovery-environment.
Only install Custom Recoveries from inside the Recovery, because Fastboot can only replace partitions entirely (and boot-partitions contains both bootloader & recovery)
The bootloader of the Poco F3 cannot (or shouldn't) be locked on Custom Software.

Download these:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/mipa-project/files/arrow-mipa/arrow-13.0/alioth/Additions/boot.img/download
https://sourceforge.net/projects/mipa-project/files/arrow-mipa/arrow-13.0/alioth/Additions/vendor_boot.img/download
First link, "fastboot flash boot boot.img"
Second link, "fastboot flash vendor_boot vendor_boot.img"
Then Fastboot booting into your Recovery-file should work.
Also, what's the problem with ArrowOS anyway? We've ArrowOS MiPa, it's a good and reliable ROM.

I noticed that these are for ArrowOS 13, I'm on 12.1 and they did not work
Do you also suggest I go into fastboot by which method because each one looks different
Recovery > Advanced > Enter fastboot
Or
Hold power button with volume down method
Also I'm just looking to update to Android 13 in general
Thank you for helping me out by the way

Both methods of booting into Fastboot is the same I would guess.
Yes we do have ArrowOS MiPa, you should only need to flash the ArrowOS 13 MiPa ROM ZIP in Recovery, but I rather recommend you using OrangeFox or TWRP for that.
What do you mean by "did not work". "Did not work" can mean anything.
Are you using the latest official ADB & Fastboot Binaries? The ones I've given you?
If yes, you can use this Payload Dumper Tool, to extract the "vendor_boot.img" and "boot.img" from ArrowOS 12. Maybe those from Arrow v12 can be flashed.
[Windows] Payload Dumper GUI - dump boot.img and other img files from payload.bin.

Yup try it.
Else, here I have the vendor_boot.img & boot.img from the latest ArrowOS MiPa (February). More up-to-date than the SourceForge links.
Either the 2 files from ArrowOS v12, or the latest v13 ones that I've uploaded here, should definitely work.
Also try rebooting Fastboot Mode.

Starting to think I should just give up, no matter what I do I get (Download is not allowed on locked devices)
The fastboot method you suggested does not work, it gets stuck on (waiting for any devices) but the recovery one works although like I said, I get the error no matter what I do
Is it locked or what?? I'm trying to figure that out and if it is how did it even get locked in the first place
I'm guessing there's no way to resolve it and that I'll be stuck on Android 12 for eternity
So sorry for wasting your time, I always end up with weird issues in everything

Waiting for any devices means your PC does not detect the phone.
Download this: https://cdn.alsgp0.fds.api.mi-img.com/micomm/MiFlash2020-3-14-0.rar
And install the USB driver.
And no it's not locked, the Unlocked symbol during Boot is normal. I think it was a bug with older ArrowOS Bootloader versions. Not quite sure.
