Hi there !
I got a Chinese Android 8.1 head unit for my car, it works well but its UI theme is uggly, and i would like to know how to change that if it's possible.
I tried to install car launchers, but i cannot assign natives apps, just downloaded apps, and i cannot assign physical keys to downloaded apps :crying:
Is it possible to install a new UI theme ? Will the physical keys work ?

We suggest installing the program CarWebGuru, which is a launcher, designed specifically for the car head units (android car radio). One of the main functions is to support a large number of themes.
When installing the program, you will be asked to select the main screen theme. Then you can change it or add a new desktop with a different theme.
The program can have several desktops and for each you can install a separate theme. So if you like several themes, then you can use them at the same time. Also, different themes can be used for different purposes – one at night, the other for day. One screen for parking, another for a trip. No restrictions. Set up exactly as it is for you!
You can change the theme from the TOOLS window (swipe down), then the “Change theme” (Set Skin) button.
The problem is that no one launcher finds radio, music, video.apk and more...

I have been battling this same problem, no launcher is able to see the built in radio/phone/etc apps. I believe it is because the apps are integrated into the stock launcher.
You might have luck with FCC launcher, its worth a shot..
I have not found a radio apk yet that works and without root I doubt I can make any progress using a different launcher that can support the stock apps

Nova Launcher using Widget - Shortcut Activities is the only launcher thus far that is able to access the apps.
Still plugging away at a solution.

Yeah, Nova Launcher works well, but you have to customize it and create the shortcuts. It’s not difficult, but it’s not straight forward like other ones.
Download activity shortcut manager, select your head unit default application, choose and create shortcuts for radio,...
I have a similar head unit. Same build and all that jazz. I was thinking if anyone knew how to do a hard reset or delete the manufacturer Chinese stuff and just upload a new system. Or something similar to that. I've done the launchers, but in the background it's still the same crap. Is there a way to get to bootloader or do a hard rest where it will wipe everything?
I'm in the same boat. Crappy UI and can't change it. The most ridiculous thing is that my unit is sold specifically to Alfa Romeo and the Alfa logo does not appear on logos available through options. Without rooting won't be able to access system folder and change it. They sell these radios and its impossible to change the most basic things

I`ve created my custom theme with different widget apps.
My Device is an PX5 4gb ram
Here is what you need in short steps:
1: Background Animation
Android App: Video Wallpaper
Background Animation:
sorry. can`t post external link... maybe this works:
https:// 1drv.ms/v/s!AvPf5Oi0ESVCgdVdCfcdOcpDj2MX6w
2: Widget design with buttons
Android Apps: UCCW as the Fullscreen Widget.
Inside of UCCW you can set the ui layout with your own graphic png files and than choose button areas.
A Button can open an App like GoogleMaps etc. Me goal was to start my car mic with a press on the mazda logo. For that i have used "Power Shortcuts"
With this app inside of uccw you can start system settings like start bluetooth or all other stuff that is no app.
I also added a secnd page with my apps. This is a separat uccw widget on the next page.
friendly greedings from germany.
you can enter into factory settings(need to enter password, check with your seller), then check if the UI can be changed there.

Hi all,
I was wondering with all the fantastic softkey modifications so far, would it be possible to incorporate the app drawer launcher button in the softkey bar? This would simplify the interface at the bottom of the stock launcher screen and create more desktop real estate. For people like myself who like a minimal-istic look with full view of the wallpaper it would be great too!
I have attached an image to better explain what I mean.
Button function would be as follows:
Back key: Back & long press to kill current app.
Home Key: Home.
App key: Open/Close app drawer.
Multi-task key: Multi task.
Menu key: Context sensitive menu & long press for Search.
Many thanks folks!
very awesome idea, i like it!
I like that one too; is it even possible to access the app drawer directly out of an app ?
Wow that is exactly what i want out of my soft keys!...
Interesting idea.

Yes, wave launcher can already do this
I would like this as well, good idea.
+1 for this idea. If I knew how to write fresh code and went down the developer path I may of taken this on...why oh why did I have to take the theming path
Great idea all the same, lets hope a talented dev can get this done.
very awesome idea +1 ^^
Ah fantastic, thanks for the great response folks, I'm glad people like the idea too. I only wish I had the coding knowledge to work on it myself... I'm slowly trying to learn as much as I can, but this is well out of my league currently lol!
Hopefully one of our many talented devs will like the idea as well and be able to put something together
that is one amazing concept, I suggest we all make requests for this at the thread of the ROM we're each currently using, a lot of our awesome devs take requests!
You could do what I do is use a third party launcher such as ADW and turn off the dock. Set the home button binding to open and close the app drawer.
Just throwing out a suggestion.

Basically You would need to create a shortcut to to the app drawer in a specific launcher. Or a shortcut to a specific app like 3d app drawer.
This would be awesome. I love the minimalistic look....
I already modded my stock launcher to not have the white line above the icons.... and then deleted my icons just for the sole purpose of keeping it minimal and maxing wallpaper space.
I would love the ability to add a launcher button to the soft keys, but what would the button do while the launcher is already up... or an app is open? Would it dissapear.... that would be cool.

Having had the original idea, I really would like to code this myself therefore giving something back to the community, but as I said I really wouldn't know where to start.
My assumption based on what I've read is that this would require modifications to the system ui apk?
Anyone who could help me with this it would be much appreciated.
How did you remove the line above the launcher icons as this would need to be part of the mod, perhaps if I start with simple changes I could move on from there?
I was thinking 'ClearLauncher' as a mod name too???
Thanks

Since we have a dedicated recent apps button, I think it'd be cool if we could long press the home button for the app drawer. It would make it even more minimalistic

Yea.... all the modding for the new soft key icon should be within SystemUI.apk. there is tutorial on rootzwiki showing how to add buttons like search to the soft keys. It was all done within systemui. It should be the same process, except i have no idea what the code would be for the app drawer. I can send a link to the tutorial when i get on my computer.
Also, to remove the white line..... that was part of the launcher. Launcher2.apk. it was just an image edit. Changed the .png from white to transparent. I dont know the exact filename off the top of my head, but ill post that too when i get on my computer.
I've ventured into modding the softkeys keys with help from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21258064#post21258064
You must know how to decompile/recompile the SystemUI.apk in order to get started. Once you open the appropriate .xml, you need to edit the "keycode" values of the buttons which can obtained from here:
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/view/KeyEvent.html
The only problem is is that keycode actions are limited. This means that only certain buttons can appear in the navigation bar. If you look at the Android dev site, the only useful ones I've found through my testing that actually worked were:
KEYCODE_POWER - This powers off the device.
KEYCODE_CALL - Launches the "Phone" app.
KEYCODE_EXPLORER - Launches the "Browser" app.
KEYCODE_MUSIC - Launches the "Music" app.
KEYCODE_CONTACTS - Launches the "Contacts" app.
KEYCODE_CALCULATOR - Launches the "Calculator" app.
KEYCODE_CALENDAR - Launches the "Calendar" app.
I was hoping KEYCODE_CAMERA and KEYCODE_NOTIFICATION would allow me to go into the Camera app and bring down the notification bar respectively but they didn't work with my testing. KEYCODE_CAMERA only takes a picture when you are in the Camera app already which isn't useful.
So as you can see, a softkey for the App Drawer isn't possible through these means as there lacks a "keycode" for it. I assume if it's even possible for the ability to launch any app, such as the app drawer, it would require some deep hacking which I'm not familiar with by any means. A real dev would have to take on this task. However, if you want buttons in the nav bar that can launch those above, it's easy. I've personally added a button to power off the device as seen below:

There should be no dependencies.
However try integrating it into the firmware (it was designed to work from /system/app)- ICS does restrict launcher behaviour if it is not a system app (like for Apex- you can't put a widget from Drawer if it's a user app)

No, it is for all screen sizes (well, maybe except qvga but I didn't test this)
Like Trebuchet Concept, Looking Forward
Once I figured out how to use it, I kind of like the minimalist approach. Dragging app icons and widgets to the screens is much quicker than click, click, find, click, ... and the widget re-sizing dot feature touted in Jellybean is already there (but can be applied asymmetrically for some strange results).
However, this thing is still primitive. No properties except wallpapers.
I put on adw (former XDA launcher) just to have a more usable system. I do not look for fancy eye-candy like go. Just some simple properties like:
Grid density--I like fitting more icons on the page (I find the adw refitting not the best so leave that unchecked).
Along with this, might need the widget auto-refit idea from Jellybean.
Number of home screens (elementary).
Last but not least, a backup and restore.
Another interesting idea I got by accident in another launcher: superimpose icon over larger widget. When clicked, takes precedence, of course. Since screen real-estate, especially in smaller phones, is at a premium, this could be a "killer."
Two bugs I found:
Possible to place two icons in same place on app bar. Embarrassing.
Widgets did not "come back" after reboot sometimes.
Got a Nice Version!
There are multiple versions around for download, without any systematic way of choosing other than: The Biggest Has More Features Implemented. I found a 10 meg version in a flash-able zip that has most of what I wanted already there!
Still needs a backup and save, and important: way of resetting as the default launcher
The general widget re-sizing works great, even re-positioning to a halfway spot so the re-sizing makes sense. Great.
Minor bugs around:
The news and weather widget re-sizing works incorrectly. ADW does it fine.
Icon label text is cut off (at least on 5-row view). Vertical padding makes it worse. Needs be tucked in closer to the icon.
I might assume that a somewhat larger apk is around somewhere with more features and fixes. Once I can get it again as default launcher, I will play with it some more.
It did not passed on my 7 inch tablet :-( There is margins at the bottom and top with a height of regular icon size.

Keep in mind, he's talking as if you have Go Launcher EX as your launcher. How you go about selecting multi-picture live wallpaper as your live wallpaper at the beginning may be different. The rest of the instruction is correct.

Didn't try it with TW, but I'm pretty sure it will work. It only relies on which image or folder of images is assigned to which respective homescreen. I mostly ran Go Launcher EX when I was stock and not even rooted. It does work with Nova, ADW and Trebuct(sp?) as well. I've ran it on CM10.1, AOKP, JellyBeer, JellyBam, ParanoidAndroid, LiquidSmooth and Vanilla RootBox. All worked fine. I'm running Vanilla RootBox with Go Launcher HD for tablets right now and MPLW is working perfectly.
The only thing I can suggest is if you do end up having problems making it switch properly between homescreens, try scrolling down to its settings and play around with the choices under "Workaround for some home application." I learned that "For Honeycomb Tablet" seems to work the best for my set up, which is landscape mode.
Here are some examples of my homescreens with various ROMs, stock to custom, with each running MPLW:

Hi,
Yes, it IS possible to get different wallpapers on different home screens. ( Assuming that each home screen has it own STATIC wallpaper.)
I've got SG Note 2 with Nova Launcher Prime.
The number of home screens is not critical (I personally have 7 of them.)
As was mentioned you would need MultiPicture Live Wallpaper (MPLW). So install it.
Here is the sort of the tut for this task.
1. Prepare the wallpapers you want to allocate and put the exact number of them (e.g. 7 wallpapers if you have 7 screens) in separate folder. (FYI, I haven’t experimented with the external SD card, since I already had those 7 pictures in the internal storage.)
2. Go to Nova Launcher’s settings and enable (use ON radio button) Wallpapers scrolling under the Desktop menu. Quit Nova settings.
3. Choose Wallpaper menu item under the Menu Key and then, choose the Live Wallpapers.
4. Chose MPLW and then, tap its settings button.
5. Then, Common settings > Picture Source > Picture folder. Set the path to the folder with your wallpaper images.
6. Under the Picture Folder menu set the Selection settings to specify on which wallpaper will be on what screen, etc.
7. Use SGN2 Back and set the rest of the Common settings options (BG color, Crop, transitions etc.) under the Screen Settings menu. Make sure that you select the NEVER radio button under the Picture change interval menu.
8. Use SGN2 Back key again and tap Set Wallpaper button. Voilà!
2 notes: a) It seems like NO workaround options that MPLW offers is needed... I just set it to NONE and it worked just fine for me; b) since I had earlier changed as I wanted the Lock screen using the settings SGN2 provides, I didn’t actually try hard to make the “Use lock screen settings” option work. At least simple selecting that checkbox and pointing to the specific image did NOT work – the lock screen wallpaper remained the old one.
I hope that this tut will work for you too and maybe not only for Note 2. Honestly, when you have the specific wallpaper for each screen, this is not just looking cool , but is helpful too (better icons/folders visibility).
Cheers,
Max
I know some of you are against changing the stock/vanilla android look, but for those who have tried any launchers that have been ported from other devices like Samsung, LG, Sony...

It looks ok, but the icons are way too small and the weather widget size (4x2) is smaller than home grid size (5x5) so it does not center.

I used XPeria launcher but kinda lagged on transitions. Also tried MIUI launcher but crashes on 4.4.2. Other than that it's smooth, fluid and looks good

Absolutely! Here's what I did. These steps are for those who don't know about Xposed Framework as well.
1. Make sure that Xposed is installed (the framework, not just the apk), download App settings module from the Downloads section within the app. Go back to the modules section, and activate the checkbox for App Settings.
2. Reboot. (It is recommended that you reboot for the framework to be installed for the changes to take effect. While this is true, I reboot after my modules are downloaded/activated. If not, they would require a second reboot as well.)
3. Navigate to "TouchWiz home" in App Settings. Switch it from Off to On, and change the DPI value to a resolution that you find suitable, and hit save. I use 460 for this launcher, and various values for different apps that I find is a waste of screen real estate (like 280 for the Play Store, and most of the Google Apps).

Got it working now, i didn't know which dpi setting to use, although the homescreen is 4x4, i wish it was 5x5 at least. Thanks for the help!

Not that I actually want it...but this is Android. I have it just because I can.
P.S.: Can't add any widgets to it. Not sure why the permissions are wrong, but I didn't care to figure it out. I don't use it.
Gonna give the lg launcher a whirl... Is it functionably?
Where is the touchwiz launcher for the nexus 7 2013? I've searched and searched but can't seem to find it.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Port touchwiz launcher for Nexus 7 2013 flo.

Don't know why you would want to do such a thing tho... Touchwiz is hideous IMO, but to each his own

You might be able to get one more row out of it with this.
http://repo.xposed.info/module/uk.co.villainrom.pulser.fivebyfourlauncher
Hello
I just installed the Next Launcher,
Id like to implement a widget similar to the one used be the stock rom; whereby if the Radio is playing, the station is shown on the widget, or music playing etc.
Does anyone know where to get this?
Thanks.
I'd like to know that too, but AFAIK that functionality is integrated in the original launcher and cannot be transfered to other launchers.
About the music player, I resorted using another app that has its own widget, but I lost the knob functions:
left knob push: pause play
right knob rotation: move to previous/next
I have the original stock rom and don't use the xposed framework.
Yeah thanks,
No problem, Ill manage without.
You can use the KGL widgets from Android 4.2.2 versions, sure theyre on the fileserver somehwere.
Thanks typos1 for the suggestion.
I found the widget repository:
http://huifei.fs-fileserver.de/content/apps/KGL Widgets/
Going to test them tomorrow on my Eonon with ADWlauncherEx
Tested tonight...
Media player widget works correctly: start/stop/previous/next/time elapsed/length
However no cover shown, song title limited to a few words only.
Radio widget: works almost correctly, only pause button has no effect.
However no station name shown, station frequency only.
Overall, these 2 widgets are relatively small, and it might be difficult to precisely push their buttons especially when driving.

And they don't change automatically when you change sound source. E.g. in JY launcher default fixed "widget" it changes automatically into the radio / player if you change the app. With separate widget for each app you have to overcrowd screen surface keeping both widgets while only one is effective.
I would like if we could have combined widget...
Yes I agree, the best thing would be something like the Klyde or Joyous Launcher's "widget" thats not actually a widget at all but built into the launcher, made into a proper widget, but without the clock (dont need one as its in the notification panel) as I also want other widgets on my homescreen, but the Klyde/Joyous launchers dont allow other widgets.
Unfortunately I cant really code, so its not something I can do, but when I ve got time I do intend to at least try and decompile one of these launchers and try and remove the time bit (and the stupid car apps bit), maybe even try and figure out how to turn them into proper widgets.
(By the way, when I used the KGL widgets I used one per desktop - dont forget as Android is Linux you get several desktops - so you dont have to overcrowd.)
