How to enable HEADS UP notification style ? - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

So just yesterday got myself a new shiny Galaxy S9, all good and dandy but one thing that is bothering me is the Samsungs very small on screen notification...it's so tiny I can barely read it in time.
Now what I really like is that stock HEADS UP notification but I tried searching to enable in the settings for almost an hour and I just can't find it. Now after researching a bit on internet I saw there is a ADB way to enable it but I haven't rooted or used ADB in ages so I would rather evade this route if not necessary.
Can anyone help me?

Did you mean the edge lightning style notification?
If yes, Go to settings > display > edge screen > edge lightning and select when screen is off or simply turn it off at all. Then you will receive normal heads up notifications.

Oh my god yes!!! Thank you so much!!! I actually didn't know what they are called so I didn't knew Edge Lighting settings had anything to do with the notification.
Many people hate Heads Up but I absolutely love it as it gives me a nice quick glance at the top without me needing to pull down the notification bar.
Thanks again so much!

[Q] A few newbie questions.

Okay so I got my Note two and I've only just had today to have a play about with it.
I have a few questions if anyone (or more) can nudge me in the right direction.
Firstly is there an app that allows me more control over the track I'm playing? If I remember correctly but I could double click the volume button on my iPod Touch and skip forward or back depending on if it was volume up or down.
Is there anyway of changing the colours of the notification icons at the top of the screen or hiding them?
Is there anyway of setting the buddypage to an app. I like the music one but it always reverts to the stock player.
Last but not least it's the one that I find most annoying. I have a small tab light blue in colour which seems to come and go of it's own choosing. You can add different apps to it and move it to any side of the screen you want to. Is there any way of disabling it so it stops getting on my nerves?
Thanks in advance.

You might take a look at an alternate music player like PowerAmp. I recall it having options to use hardware buttons to control playback.

Not that I know of in the stock ROM. I can't say about other ROMS, I haven't tried them.

I think you're noticing the Multi-Window tab. You can either long-press the back button to hide the tab, or disable Multi-Window completely using the notification toggle.
Thanks for the speedy response mate.
Yeah that got rid of the annoying tab thanks very much.
Not sure what you mean by disabling it with the notification toggle.
But at least I know how to get rid of it when it pops up.
So thanks again. It was doing my head in.

LOL. You hate the one feature that everyone was dying to have.
Pull down your notification bar on the top of the screen.
You will see your toggle buttons up top for various settings, such as Wifi,GPS, bluetooth etc.
Slide that toggle panel all the way across. On the far right end you will see the toggle for Multi Window. Just click it and the setting is turned off.
Sent from my Galaxy Note II using XDA Premium.
If you download and use another launcher, such as Nova, you can have full screen. That will hide the notifications, battery and clock…and everything else that shows at the top of your screen.

I have the international Note II and this does not have a toggle for the multi-window menu bar in the notifications pull-down.
Good mention about Nova launcher. I use Apex launcher, and use two-finger swipe up to hide the notifications bar. I forgot that was in there.
Thanks for the answers guys it's very much appreciated.
I can confirm the back button works to get rid of the multiscreen.
A special thanks to mcphail for the pointers especially to Poweramp. What a hell of a player. I had given the note up as a decent music player. I thought also of replacing the earphones.
But the bass is great on poweramp. Fantastic program.

Lollipop Notifications - Other options?

I'm pretty happy with the stock Lollipop upgrade overall, but with the way LG screwed with the Notifications (no double-click to open) I'm looking for other notification options.
It seems that DynamicNotifications and AcDisplay are the most talked about options, but I'm curious if anyone has recommendations for other notification alternatives.
Thanks.
NILS notifications works pretty good.. I use it for lockscreen.. And you can use Floatify to get heads up notifications.

NILS looks pretty good. Thanks for the tip.
I used NiLS prior to L. It's great. Also good for a home screen widget.
I've been using echo notification lockscreen, it's pretty great. Also, tried floatify and notific.
notific would be awesome if it were an actual lockscreen replacement and not an addon to it... anyway... it's another option.
You have to click once, then swipe to open the app... I don't care for it either.

Exactly my thoughts...that click, then swipe is pretty annoying. I've been using NILS for a little bit now and it is pretty nice. A little bit of lag when opening the notification, but nothing I can't live with.
I'll take a peek at Echo and Notific, as well...never hurts to try.
I appreciate the input fellas.

One last thing... I saw this on the portal and tried it, was a pretty good combo...
ACDisplay Lockscreen. It's a very simplistic/elegant design, and the notification layout is pretty nifty. Then, you get heads up notifications made from the same developers of ACDisplay. you'll need an xposed module to bring back lollipop ticker. I tried the combo for a few days and was getting quite used to it and was serviceable. I just made the switch to an AOSP L rom today which i'm pretty happy with.
I was afraid to leave stock because the main draw for me was the camera... but i researched and found 3 good options. an HTC port, lenovo port, and morotola port. the lenovo is one hell of a great option.... I use a combo of three different themes and i don't think i've ever been so happy with a rom
Oh, and here you go... the portal post which i followed: http://www.xda-developers.com/acdisplay-and-headsup-better-notification-handling/

Screen off memo

Hi, every time I write a screen off memo it will not show on the AOD screen. Instead will go directly into a icon. If I tap twice the icon will appear for a brief time and then go back as icon.
The time it will stay on the screen will not be combined with the date/time.
Anyone has the same? Is it a problem of the settings or csc?
Tks

Yes, same here - direct to icon. I saw review videos where the screen off memo actually remains on the display along with the always-on screen. I tried every combination (i think) of always-on display and lockscreen notification settings, but never found a way to get it to stay.
On those same videos, by the way, the main settings screen looked very much like the one of the Note 5 and not at all like Grace UX, which is what i have. So i wonder if there are different software versions out there with some serious differences.
Maybe csc related ? mine is XSG.

If you go into the always on display settings and then about it should show you an update is available. After this is downloaded it is now working correctly.
Not sure why this did not ship on the phone or they make the update more obvious.

I didn't get an update prompt, but this helped me. I opened galaxy apps and looked for updates there. sure enough, there was, and installing it fixed it. All good now!

i didn't check that, but Galaxy App pushed an update of Always-on Display yesterday, and indeed now it works the way it should
Thanks. Update worked. I was wondering why it wasn't working.

side bar display help please.

hi
i have just upgraded from the s7 edge to the s9+
the only issue i am having wit it is that i cant get the side bar to display my messages. on my old s7 when i got a text message i could just slide my finger across the the of the screen and the text message would scroll across the edge of the screen allowing be to read it without having to pick up my phone. that was great for me at work.
i am unable to find how to turn this on with the s9+ is it possible to do it? if yes how please?
You are referring to the RSS feed like option when screen is off? If so yes unfortunately that feature was removed since the S8/S8+. Now I'm used to not having it. They should have removed the Edge screen option and kept the RSS feed. Used to like getting my sports feed like that.
thats crap, the main thing i liked about the phone was that feature,
i think i ill return the s9+ and go back to the 7edge
thank you for the information.
If you go I to the edge panel settings click the download link at top right. The Messages app for edge bar is there. $1. 50

This is my first Samsung so I don't know exactly how they look compared to what you're used to. However the two apps that it seems is called Messages Edge, and Messages Pro.

App for notification light?

So, i'm coming from a 6 and not having a notification LED sucks. Do you guys use any app for simulating a LED? If there was a way to put a tiny green blinking circle in the bottom, that would be awsome.
Thanks in advance.

I got my 7T yesterday was wondering the same thing, given that it's been a cornerstone of most every phone I've owned. So I did some searching around and found this, which seems to be working great, and is developed by an XDA member.

There is a thread about it here:

Using it now. It evens allows to put the light wherever we want. On my car, i only see the bottom of the phone.
Looks great so far!
Although "Notify Buddy" is a very nice app and works on Oneplus 7T i found out that it has a quiet high battery consumption. There are two other apps, that worked fine for OP 6T:
"Plus Beat"
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=vaf.vishal.plusbeat
"Pixel Pulse"
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.compass.pixelpulse
They both need a workaround to be usefull on OP 7T:
- notification change to "important"
- enable popup on lockscreen
- disable "stealth mode" in app
Under this circumstandes they work fine!
Have fun with your new Oneplus!

Yup, unsinstalled notify buddy precisely for that, wasting too much battery.
I have pulse beat here, but doesn't seem to work. Going to disable stealth mode. And enable it on lockscreen. O7t here.

I dont know another way. battery life is okay with plus beat, burn in depends on the frequency and time...
have a nice day!
Plus beat is much more battery friendly than nottify buddy.
There is no way to sey PB notifications to important, at least i don't see it. Android 10 on 7t here. But ir's working good with stealth mode disabled.
Not quite the same.. But I use an app called Glimpse, works perfectly for me, it lights the screen up when a notification comes In, I set mine to light the screen up for 30 seconds, gives me chance to read it unlike the oneplus light up screen setting which lasts for 8 seconds.
you can select apps for notifications.
you can set screen on time and you can set it to repeat alert until checked based on a time setting...
The app is light on background battery usage.
The app is also well supported on the Xda forums...
Couple of tips, turn off the built in oneplus light up screen setting or Glimpse will not work correctly.
Also consider turning off optimisation in the battery settings and locking the app, so that android does not close it down in the background.
The app is free and ad free from the Google store.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-glimpse-notifications-t3090575/amp/
I also use a xiaomi Mi band 4 with my oneplus 7t, I set my phone to silent, use the mii band app to send the watch notifications, via vibration from my selected apps, sooooo much better than the phone beeping loudly, it disturbs nobody, more zen like... Plus the Mi band 4 is low cost, very long battery life, Amoled screen, works wonderfully...
Plus the notification message can be partially seen on the Mi band.
Looks interesting. For now, plus beat does the job, but i would like for it to stop showing notifications after you see them in the status bar.
