Notification light on nexus 7

Hi all I have just bought the new nexus 7 and I love it. One problem is I have never seen the notification light work yet. I have checked in settings and it's ticked.. When does it flash? Is it every time you get a notification from eg Facebook etc,? I'm worried it's not working.

The light is usually associated with notifications, yes. Usually this is configurable in the apps responsible for the notifications.

I thought the same when I got mine but it was flashing during a notification a while back so at least it works but rare.

I use LightFlow and configured the light to fade in and out with almost no period of time where the light is off. It looks as if the light is "breathing", and is much more noticeable than the 10 second delay between flashes that the stock light is. Give it a shot.

So far, I've only seen it light with email. General notifications don't seem to trigger it.

My first Nexus 7 (2013) had a completely broken notification light. No matter what I did, I couldn't get it to light up. (I ran testing programs, Light Flow, sent myself emails, etc). Exchanged it at Best Buy and the new one worked immediately. So just know that there are some defective notification LEDs out there.

There's a whole slew of less common issues that IMO if it bothers you, you should get an exchange, but if not, just live with it.

Bluetooth doesn't work
Qi wireless charging doesn't work
dust under screen
light bleed
offwhite screens
dead/stuck pixels
mushy Power/Volume buttons
creaky edges
back cover comes off easily
screen separating from tablet
battery charger not recognized even though it is charging
microphone doesn't work
one speaker has no sound
charger makes buzzing noise
camera blurry
--
spasdic multi-touch
touchscreen dead-spots
camera crashes tablet
hardware related random reboots (not the same as software-related reboots)

The last 4 can sometimes be mitigated in software so try fixes first.
Many of these issues are rare. Some are more common. I think a lot of people don't even notice or just live with it because it really doesn't bother them that much or they don't even use the feature.

What settings did you use to do this? Sounds interesting.

Hmm...it sounds like my LED light took a dump on me then. I've had my Nexus 7 2013 for about a month. It used to notify me for emails...now nothing. And yes it does bother me.

Pixel XL night light mode very orange

I recently received a refurbished Pixel XL from Google (warranty). The night light mode seems very orange and dark compared to my old one. Is this how it is supposed to be?

No.
The only time I've seen my night light orange was on a custom ROM that I guess had it miscalibrated or using the wrong driver.
Have you tried wiping and updating to the latest firmware yet?

I factory reset and it's up to date. Looks like it's going back.

Can you post a better picture side by side with a device without the tint? This is not a known issue so I'm curious to see it.

What is your brightness set at. I can make mine look like that if I turn the brightness down to 25 percent or so. Once my brightness is up to 60 percent or so it looks exactly like the images of it I can find on the web.

It looks different because the camera is not able to pick up the proper exposure, I think its the same as ours. The mode is pretty yellowish/orangish indeed.

Here it is next to a pixel. Both have nightlight on. Changing brightness didn't make it any less orange/amber.

That is exactly how mine looks. There is nothing wrong with your device. If you don't like the way it looks perhaps you best not use it. I only use it for notifications at night and not for reading. It's just too dark to read an article. So it looks like your first return was a waste of time since it's not going to change no matter how many times you RMA the device.

His looks completely abnormal. Mine looks nothing like that. I've taken pictures of it with two different cameras and can't​ replicate that intense dark Amber.

Don't know what to tell you then. Mine looks exactly like his picture. Side by side I can't tell the difference at all. I guess some others will need to weigh in.

Orange Night Light
Has anyone found a solution to this yet besides sending it back, mine had the same issue and the next one they send me was the same way.

Enabling sRGB mode in Developer Options makes Night Light look much less orange on my Pixel XL.

In Android O it gives the option to control the amount of tint you want. On my replacement pixel, the tint isn't as strong as my first one.

Just chiming in, It looks VERY orange to me.
oddly enough after seeing this thread i got three pixels together (from my friends) two XL's and one small to compare them.
The smaller pixel did have a very heavy orange glow compared to both the XL's, but no where close to this.

I have an RMA XL I'm not keeping and sending back, orangeness is identical to my current XL.

I first noticed this on my dad's refurbished xl some time ago, because mine (got it back when the phone first launched) didn't look anything like that.
Just today I got a refurbished xl from Google, and it has the same very orange nightlight.
So it seems that the refurbished ones have this problem, not sure why perhaps hardware issue?
As mentioned, a fix is to enable sRGB in dev option as that makes it look more Amber like it's supposed to, or just turn the nightlight intensity down.
Mainly though I'm curious what is up with this and why the refurbs are different?

On my refurbished pixel XL when on turn the data saver on and the 1/4 moon looking thing on the phone dims and the data saver turn the top and the bottom orange, not the screen. The screen is dark but not orange.

always on display

Hi
Anyone keep always on display off due to potential burn in?

I prefer always off, but the terrible implementation of double tap to wake forces me to keep it on.

No... I love it and the now playing music as well. The only issue I have is the AOD is too dim in a pitch black dark room. All other light levels it works fine. :good:

Does it move around like the Samsung phones or will it just burn in?

I don't use it but the AOD moves around, it doesn't stay stationary so it shouldn't cause burn in.

It does not move around on this phone.
Stays same place.
Never seen it move.

It moves a few pixels every minute. Watch it when the time changes. It's not much but it does move

Agree, it moves fractionally...

Always on is annoying to me I keep mine set to Lift to Check phone

Yeah, it doesn't move nearly enough to alleviate my concern of burn-in. Especially with this screen. On the S8 it would move all over the place, even down to the bottom of the screen. Now, that's how you prevent burn-in. Just moving it back and forth between a few small pixel variations is not going to properly prevent burn-in.
For this reason, I have always on display turned off. Not worth the risk to me.

I don't see how that helps. Burn in is caused by uneven pixel aging. If it's only moving a few pixels back and forth then it's really still the same part of the screen that is having the pixels age more than the rest of the screen.

Always on is always on here, no burn in so far. Works brilliantly.

It's much improved in the dp2. Hopefully that sticks in the final release

One question about the Always On Display (I don't want to open a new thread for this) - is there a way to have the "Lockscreen"/Always-On-Display rotate to landscape mode?
When I am having my Pixel 2 XL on the magnet mount in my car in landscape mode, it would be great that the AoD also rotates...haven't come up with an idea yet, unfortunately.

I didn't say it helps I was just saying it does move to the post I quoted. That said I've had my phone since 10/19 with AOD on ever since and have no burn in.

Ok, my misunderstanding.
I got my phone on 10/24 and so far I have left AOD off. I have "Double-tap to check phone" and "Lift to check phone" turned on.
I have kept AOD off for 2 reason:
1. The fear of burn in. You may not have seen it but it does seem to me to be the most likely thing on the phone to cause burn-in since those pixels would always be on. Between 10 and 12 (am and pm) you would have the 1 digit always on and whatever shift occurs isn't noticeable so it's likely just than the width of pixels of the 1 digit. So you would effectively have pixels literally active 24 hours a day. That kind of worries me so I leave it off just as a precaution.
2. Impact on battery life. Having AOD on results in having to render, refresh and illuminate pixels 24 hours a day. Even with the great battery life I could still see the battery life being noticeably decreased.

I really wish there was more customization options, or at least the battery status displayed for AOD.

Fair enough. I tried turning it off last night and by this morning I turned it back on. Just getting ready for work this morning I missed not being able to glance over at the time as well as seeing it in my car on the dock. If there was a way to turn it on schedule or something that'd be nice. Maybe tasker could do it somehow..

If you use Accubattery, it displays the charge level on AOD with a circle around it. After the N6P I was paranoid about the battery so installed AB to confirm my battery was solid. (106% capacity). It may be a workaround until some dev comes along and provides that without having to install an app. Also THIS ARTICLE in XDA gives some hope. See the last paragraph on "other applications". :good:

I have a question on AOD. If you are listening to Google Play Music, does it show what song you are listening to? Or do you have to go to the actual lockscreen to see that? Thanks.

I want to ask is it safe to keep the always on display? My main concern is screen burn in. Can anyone provide an insight? I love the always on display but have turned off with the fear of screen burn in.

It's not always on. If you cover the proximity sensor it turns off the always on display. So if in your pocket or face down (which I do to stop watching the time go slow) it will not burn in.
Also Google move the display so it's not constantly displaying is the exact same position all them time, see https://9to5google.com/2017/10/17/google-pixel-2-oled-burn-in-protection/

Yeah it's not as dramatic a shifting as Samsung does it but it does the job. Have had my phone since the month it was released but no AOD display burn in. The bottom though, does have a little but I just recently switched to Fluid Navigation so maybe it'll alleviate some of it

Damn that's sad. The burn ins scare me. The phone is only 3 months old but yeah i want to take precautions. Been using the pie navigation so that should be fine i guess

I've been using AOD since I got my P2XL 16 months ago. I have no screen burn in from it. It's safe to use.

Note 10 screen off battery level no way to turn off

This is a pain. I have no apps installed. I have always on display turned off but when I charge the phone and the screen is off you get battery level and gone to full on the button. There is no easy to turn this off. I have tried everything. Thus week cash's screen burn in. It never goes off even when battery is full.
I have attached a screen shot. Any ideas? I'd blogging edgar Samsung needs to fix this asap or the phone goes back. S10 didn't do this.
Damn no way to post a screen shot.

Read the forum. A solution has been found already.

I'd call it more of a work around than a solution. Using the method posted you can't use Always on display.

I was looking in Samsung members and there's a couple threads about it and somebody from I guess Samsung said to use Good Lock (which doesn't fix the issue currently) but maybe they will update it so it does.

Ccswe pro app. Disable always on display gets rid of the charging status being on all the time when connected to charger/wireless charger.Etc.worked for me.

The text moves like the AOD so whats the prob? No risk of burn in.

yeah this, still don't get why people are worried about burn in from AOD. It moves around quite a bit even the human eye can tell

My main concern is the brightness, it's brighter than the note 9 charging led at night.

I tried really very hard to see the text moving but just couldn't. I personally believe it doesn't.
Even if it does, it covers a very small area, unlike the AOD clock.. Have you seen the green icon at the bottom when the battery
is full? That's going to be the biggest burner of all..
I think we should all call Samsung 10 times bumbarding them with incident tickets on this issue.

After disabling AOD using package disabler, can someone try installing an older AOD version? That version I belive will not have this stupid feature.

It dimmed down after few minutes

The reason it's there is because there is no longer an LED to show charging status. Not saying it's a good idea, just saying why it's there.
I agree with others that there is a concern of burn in. If it just shifts around by a couple pixels, it will still burn in. To prevent burn in. It would need to move around the screen. Like from top to bottom and side to side.
One work around is to take off the charger as soon as it hits 100, but I like to use my phone until I go to bed then put it on the charger. And even then, is an hour a day everyday showing the same constant image enough to cause burn in?

Many thanks for your note, just one small question, Does S10+ have battery charging indicator that stays on all the time when plugged in ? It's that notification at the bottom of the screen that shows even when the AOD is off.
I have read forums that said S10 Did not have it ?

That is correct.
Also if you do not like it, there is an app that can disable it.

Just one last question, do you charge your phone overnight ? Mine sits on wireless charging overnight for good 8 hrs everyday and shows the battery full icon also which is green in color. So the indicator stay on the screen for about 7 hrs each day.

I have both phones.
The S10+ does not have the same charger indicator as the Note 10+.
Currently the only way to turn it off is to disable AOD completely with a package disabler, unless something has been found over the past few hours that I'm not aware of.

Could it be that you do not have the latest FW or the AOD version ?
I was looking for it and just saw this video, which does show the charging indicator all the time. See here for S10 SE, would appreciate your comments.
