Oreo downgrade - Samsung Galaxy S7 Active Questions & Answers

Im on the latest oreo on my G891A. Not unlocked bootloader. Can i odin and downgrade at all? Maybe the FRP modded Odin?

If you're on RH1 then no. It's bootloader 4. If you're on the previous version then you could technically go back to one of the Nougat builds bit I don't think there is an Odin for that.

Just asking... why would you want to downgrade? I'm on 7.0 and want to upgrade to 8... what made you change your mind?

Mine's still showing v. 7.0, but the latest samsung update completely trashed my customizable messaging app; no more 'Background' in messaging app settings - e.g. you can no longer import a pic from gallery as your background, thereby customizing a big part of your phone; no longer can you pick bubble styles; no longer can you pick accent or background colors; no longer can you choose or change bubble colors, etc etc etc.
Samsung --which seems to be ruining our phones more and more with each so-called 'software update'--- trashed & ruined the customizable (which is probably not a word) messaging app that many of us were not only used to, and liked, but expected to be able to keep if we chose to, and what's more they gave us absolutely no warning that their so-called 'software update' was going to trash the messaging app that we happened to like ! What they replaced it with stinks; it's an all white background --w/white bubbles for others-- but annoying turquoise green bubbles for the phones' user. Then as if that isn't bad enough, samsung refuses to release the 'read receipt' & pinch-for-font-expandable coding/permissions (or whatever) to any 3rd party messaging app developers (according to the developers at Textra), or so they claim.
So yes, I'd love to downgrade back to the latest version on 7.0, but AT&T tells me it's not possible without root, of which appears ---from what I've been reading lately-- to have as good a chance at wrecking and/or causing endless hassles & attempted fixes with your phone . . . as it does successfully hacking it.

New to Pixel and Android

First Android device, coming from Apple. What do I need to do/know?
That you've made the right decision.
No really, what exactly do you want to know? You got a highly customizable device now
i Am new to all this tech, not sure what I can/want to do. I have seen a lot of talk about root and bootloader. Not sure if I will ever use root, should I still unlock bootloader? If I unlock bootloader what does it effect? Does it disable any functions that of the device? Looking for any advice or help.

I wouldn't unlock bootloader unless you root. You do miss out on some apps with unlocked bootloader as that causes SafetyNet to fail which some apps require passing. That'd be some banking apps, Android Pay, Netflix (last I heard), Pokemon Go, and others.
I would say at least have the option checked in Developer option.
You don't have to unlock it but it is always good practice to have it checked.
And what exactly do you want to do with your phone? like customization is pretty nice without root currently.
You will need to ask what you want to try to do since there is soo much you can really do on android.
My wife is an iPhone devotee and so I'm her default IT support person and as a result I'm very familiar with iOS and it's severely limited abilities.
The single biggest, and best, difference you'll discover is the ability to fully customize almost anything on the phone. Notifications indicators are alway visible at the top of the screen. You can place an app icon anywhere on the screen you want vs. iOS's infuriating mandatory top-left to bottom-right arrangement (ever have an adorable picture of your kid that you can see cause you can't move icons around?). Real widgets that range from daily schedule to weather to, well, just about anything and they can be placed anywhere on the screen and sized as needed (what iOS calls widgets are a joke). App settings are accessible from within every app so you don't have to, say, exit your calendar, go to settings, find the app settings item, make your change, and then go back to your calendar. Android let's you track battery usage in detail, either within Settings or via 3rd party apps (GSam is great for this). I mean it goes on and on and on with the central theme being: Android invests the user with much more control and personalization and Apple clamps the OS down to the point where 1) they all look the same (boring), and 2) they make it impossible for people to take a peek under the hood (every try to figure out why your battery drain is suddenly worse?).
By buying the Pixel, as opposed to any of the other Android brands, you are buying a device that is unencumbered by endless, basically useless, marketing-driven, whizz-bang features like Samsung's old "gestures" or poorly implemented iris or face-scanning that can fooled with a photo, etc..
Pixel's follow the Apple model (one of the few really good things about iOS) of owning both the hardware design AND the OS so you get regular updates directly from Google. On other devices, there are layers of software riding between you and the OS (so-called "Skins" and other hardware-related drivers) and they (Samsung/LG/HTC/etc.) have to devote resources ($$$) to modify these layers which adds, literally months, to the update cycle.
For example, the Samsung S8 was released in April of the this year (or thereabouts) running Android 7 Nougat, Android 8 was release this August and the S8 may not see that until early NEXT year, if ever. The LG V30 just released this month and is also running Nougat and they have an even worse record of timely updates.
I had a few months of pain when I jumped over about 5 years ago and back then Android wasn't anywhere near as capable as it is now. Android and iOS are converging and I prefer Android's philosophy of openness and customization to Apple's every phone is the same model.
Until you get accustomed to the OS don't spend any time thinking about rooting (in the Apple world it's called "Jailbreaking") or unlocking the bootloader to facilitate accessing under-the-hood aspects of the OS that, as a new Android guy who is not a 'techie', you really don't need to utilize it's full potential. Forget about that for now and have fun learning the new OS.
I think one thing you may wish to do is disable imessage, as if still enabled can cause loss or delay of sms messages, other than that, go ahead and enjoy the customisation of Android :good:

[HELP] Do you recommend updating my phone?

I bought a Galaxy s9, a couple of weeks ago and the next update came:
G900ZHU2ARE6 / G9600OWA2ARE6 / G9600ZCU2ARE6
my question is, is it advisable to update it? or I wait for Android P?
Currently I have the G9600ZHU1ARBG version
Of course update it

Just curious, but why do you think it's not ok to update. I've seen very few if any problems with an official update.
I just did the update and I regret it so much. First of all, dozens of my apps don't work anymore. Most noticeably - Swipe Keyboard and Coinbase Wallet. Besides that, I can't apply custom themes from themeGalaxy anymore because the demo themes are limited to 10 minutes of use now. Good Lock refuses to work as well and I hate the new Quick settings and task window. Also getting random crashes on every other app now. My phone is entirely stock and not rooted. All in all, awful experience for me.

That was my initial thought. Luckily I managed to fix the app crashing issue (my custom launcher design was at fault). However, I had to revert to the standard theme and I'm not a fan of the new non-customizable task changer and notification bar. I'll learn to live with those, I guess. It's pointless to stay at an older Android version for such minor reasons.

Overall it is a huge upgrade over Oreo, few changes to adjust to but as is the way with updates, personally I prefer the new task changer and so on now, while weirdly when using Goodlock on Oreo I hated that design and always left it as stock
Update G9600
Go to Setup / update / manual update / search for update
The phone is loading the official Samsung S9 G9600 update.
(every month between 10 and 15 has an update)
In January promised update to Android PIE official.

My issues with the task changer are the fact that you can't swipe the apps down anymore (it now opens them instead of dismissing) and the inability of leaving the task changer by simply tapping the background. It just disrupts my "workflow" and I'm getting annoyed by it every single time. Oh, and I'm always locking my chat apps but now the unlock button is in the lower right corner of the app card, which is where my thumb usually sits when I scroll through - I'm constantly unlocking the app instead of switching to it.
But I'll get used to it, I guess.

I don't lock chat apps, and if I am closing recents, I just close them all using the "Close All" button anyway so that doesn't really bother me, just took a bit of time to get used to swiping side to side instead of up and down to scroll through them, but while I was running one of the beta's of Pie the close all button was missing so I got used to swiping up to close them anyway, like you say you adjust over time

That's my problem. Swiping up and down seems normal and about half the time I swipe up and close the app window. I believe someone suggested it and it got the standard canned response.

Can say the same here, feels sluggish. I updated it to Pie after hearing great stuff from others.
I'll see if clearing app data of most apps makes any difference.
On the official beta I'm not seeing any sluggishness at all but I do see others on it complaining about it.

Color Os Sucks

First I thought why people hate on this os, I can deal with it, I love stock android but I have also used miui in the past so color os should be fine, but thinking that was a big mistake.
It doesn't support basic android 9 pie features like swipping right to clear banner notifications, a screen on time chart (leave alone digital wellbeing), dark mode of atleast some sort (all flashy white colours, cannot even take the amoled's advantage) and many more. Even a redmi phone with android 6 or 7 with miui 10 has all android 9 features and here's color os lacking even at the basics.
And even its own features are incompliant. You can only create dual apps for select 2-3 apps, unlike in miui where you could clone any app. Also what is this thing with the call menu when you receive a call, its of 2 kinds, one in which you have to swipe up/down to take/end a call and other being you just have to click the call pick/end button. They need to show their customisation skills there, wow.
And though the phone supports L1 liscence and has a hdr capable display it still doesn't support hdr content on netflix or amazon prime. Their answer to that is an osie vision effect feature in settings>display>osie vision effect, which btw to use you have to also enable smart slidebar(in convinience aid) and then go the supported app>pull out smart slidebar and then enable osie effect. All this then only to see that it says 'not supported in current app'.
Now the main reason for my frustration being not able to download files when the phone is locked. I put anything on download, may it be a video in youtube app or a file in chrome or any download manager app, it downloads only till 1-2 mins after the phone is locked. I come after an hour or so and the download is stuck there. How can one not be frustrated then.
So conclusion is to hell with color os, just waiting for a stable custom rom(pixel experience rom for that matter).

And yes about the background downloading I tried locking the apps, turning off battery optimizations for them but didn't try turning off sleep mode, will do. Thanks.

I guess so too. Because they don't have much time to deeply modify the OS.
I'm facing a weird issue on my Realme X. After updating an app on Play Store, I don't see "app updated" confirmation on notification panel. I need to open Play store to check if the app is updated or not. My play store version is 17.8.14. All other notification working like when an update is available, when I install a new app etc. Only I don't get notification confirmation after updating an existing app.

Clear data of play store & play services, reboot and let those update itself, then update your apps. Also check for if any specific notification is disabled for play store.

This doesn't help. I know all these workarounds and tried already. I have created a post on Google Community and it seems like most people are facing this bug starting from 17.8.14 update. And after 17.9.17 update, it's even worse. There is no notification from Play Store whatsoever (no notification when an update is available, when an update is completed, when a new app is installed successfully). Google has screwed the notification function on Play Store.

Well can't say. No issues here.

Any major flaws/issues with Android 11/One UI 3.0/3.1 ?

Hi, I just got a Note 10+ and I haven't transferred over to it yet. I was playing around with it and before I knew it, the Android 11 update was pushed to it and as y'all know it forces it's way in even after you disable it. So far with minimal apps and no sim card, the phone seems fine. There are some missing edge panels I can't access anymore in the galazy store or google play for that matter.
That being said, are people here generally happy about Android 11? What are some well knwon issues?
I have been skeptical about Samsung phones since my Note 8 to Note 9. As they get updates, the phones start running more clunky. Almost like they purposefully want you to upgrade.
Android 11 (one UI 3.1) is all I know on this phone. I came from the Note 4 and S5. Just got my Note 10 as well with Android 9 and two days later did a system update to Android 11. For me, it was about 10 updates in a row and 2 or 3 of them were roughly 2GB. I should have done factory reset before doing the updates, but then again, I didn't have the phone that long before doing it. I wish there was a setting for the transparency on the notification pull down, apps drawer, recent apps, etc but's faily tastefully done. They give the option to change the tranpsarncy on the lock screen but not the main screen which is backwards. I don't like the new fat vertical volume sliders. They look nice but harder to use because your finger's in the way. LOL. The horizontal ones were wider than these are tall. Some say Android 11 is slower and harder on the battery. The battery life isn't as good as I hoped.
I don't have issues with Edge Screens missing in the Galaxy Store in Android 11. Never used Google Play for edge screens. but then again, I never used Edge Screens before, so I wouldn't know what was missing.
One thing I noticed right off the bat is the brightness of the Note10 isn't as bright when the brightness slider is set to the same position as my ancient S5. I put the display setting on Vivid and the white balance/gamma is too red. I put the Cool/Warm slider all the way to Cool and it's still a tad Red.

THere was this edge screen app called Edgeboard that used to be available and was available on my Note 9. It's no longer available
So battery life is shorter and Note 10+ is slower on Android 11. FFS
I don't see Edgeboard in the Galaxy Store. Just repeating what little I read about Android 11 and battery life and performance. Maybe others can chime in. I'm sure it's mentioned in this forum in detail.

That was a stock one I think... be careful what you allow to update or flash.
If you have a fast, stable platform that is fulfilling its mission, leave it be.

You need to block the carrier update apk. Conversely if it downloads clearing the system cache (or maybe a factory reset) should clear it if it hasn't flashed yet. Last ditch effort and not a good long term solution.
If you avoid/ turn off wifi to stop the update that won't work forever because the update apk can turn on wifi and any other apks it needs as well as certain towers (AT&T probably other carriers too) are "update" towers that will download the update fast.
I use a package disabler to keep my updater neutered. https://www.packagedisabler.com/
An ADB edit is also another way to get it done on a unrooted stock phone.
Carriers like AT&T can block updates on their end if you pester them enough
Get it done asap whichever solution you choose.

OxygenOS 12 Open Beta 2: Huge Improvements!

My OnePlus 7T Global HD1903 was on stock OOS Stable for almost 3 years now.
I just decided to update to OOS12 Beta 2 (Indian) yesterday and overall, I like it!
Official update guide here: OxygenOS 12 Open Beta 2 for the OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7T Pro
Improvements:
1. Stock launcher: now has Google Feeds built-in.
2. Stock launcher: can now lock home screen icon arrangements. This is especially a big deal for me because I always mis-swipe icons and accidentally rearrange them.
3. Game mode: swipe notification banner is now easier to use. You can easily adjust brightness now, which is what I always use when gaming.
4. WiFi and Bluetooth connects faster.
5. Mobile data: signal is more stable. This surprised me a lot because this is an Indian ROM flashed on a Global device. I live in the Philippines, so it may vary from country to country.
6. Fast switching between mobile data and wifi, unlike on OOS11 where there's around 3 seconds of delay.
7. More stable fingerprint scanning (FOD) so it feels faster too, unlike on OOS11 when there are instances that I have to try 3x before my fingerprint gets recognized.
8. Larger PIN input when restarting device and FOD is disabled.
9. Lowest brightness is now even lower. Very good when you use your phone in pitch black environments.
What's missing, and what can be improved:
1. AOD: still the same old crappy Sometimes On Display. My Oppo Reno has a proper AOD, which I thought would be implemented in this update.
2. Recents: app settings cannot be launched directly anymore.
3. Notification banners: button texts are buggy/cut (like Reply or Like). Although this is an Android 12 issue, OnePlus could have fixed it.
4. Stock launcher: home screen icons cannot be set individually. (I bought icon packs for this feature)
5. Stock launcher: home screen icons cannot be renamed anymore. (You can remove app names completely)
6. Dolby Atmos is now disabled when using built-in speakers. Ironically, I only enable them when using the built-in speakers to make sound louder.
7. VoLTE and VoWiFI
Bugs and Nitpicks (but not dealbreakers):
1. Very long boot time. Logo always stuck for 40 seconds before boot animation shows up.
2. Boot animation stutters (low FPS).
3. On standard home screen mode (drawer disabled), SIM Toolkit apps always show up on the home screen after every reboot, even if you put them in a folder.
4. Some apps think that the device/sim is Indian, so there are notifications telling you to enable Roaming. Just disable these notifications once, then they'll stop showing up.
5. Lock screen colors are still oversaturated when FOD is enabled (same with OOS10 and OOS11). This is why I just use a black wallpaper for lockscreen.
6. Stock launcher icon names can now only be removed completely (no app names on drawer too), unlike before where it only doesn't show on the home screen.
I finaly update myself... But I am little disappinted.
first of all, AOD on OOS 11 (oob5) worked perfectly... it doesn't work here... it just is.
I have a big lag when I want to use gestures, especially when I want to leave the gallery in the home screen... everything seems to be slower.
Third, the phone and phonebook app is now much worse... it's much slower to find a name in the phone book.
Fourth, the theme substratum does not work, pureblack for example, so the notification shade is not black as I would like it to be... and all the colors seem washed out to me.
Five, no advinced power menu any more... And no optio for clear cache in recovery
I use Nova and I like it....
High performance mod... is for me must be on

Thanks for sharing your experience!
Although mine is quite the opposite (everything is more responsive / no lag).
My device isn't rooted though, and I upgraded from stable rom. So ymmv.

When I turn off substratum... its now faster and feel like before... But I prefere black in dark mode and not gray...
Also I will disable... Theme Store and Work Life Balance (I realy do not need) and Scout... What is that? Do you use it? Sports (how to acces that app) ?
And I am realy frustrated with new phonebook/call app
EDIT: I still have this bug... with gallery app and only Gallery app for now...
When I swap from botom to top... to go to home screen... bacj is just fine... but going straith to home not working in gallery app
Do you know what is Onet app?
Is it India specific? Like Idwntificarion of Unknow Number (doea it work in eu) ?
Also is there any easy way like iit was on 11 to check/change battery optimisation for specific app... or I need to go from settings and to look for app in the hole list?

I also use swipe navigation but don't have that issue on the Gallery app. I can smoothly transition from Gallery to Home Screen. I uploaded a video: CLICK HERE
Regarding apps you don't need, there is an option to disable them in the app settings.
On the end... I find that my bigrst problem is notificstion lock screen. When I get notificstion I have it for first time, but if I unlock and relock without open notificstin at all... it disappears from lock screen.
Does anyone know how to fix that behavior... Notification not show on LockScreen?
And AOD, not working... All time.... on OB5 ti was working all time if you whant that. Here it just disappear if you do not touch or move phone. I disklike that behavior.
Also I find out that Tasker, or any other app on 12 can not disable network status (2G/3G/4G) even with root.

In the end, this is a HUGE step backwards for me... and many OnePlus fans who wanted something more and stuck to the Never Settle slogan.
Oppo Coloros is not usable with many applications and causes problems with an even larger number. Maybe at first glance it looks like it's moving smoothly and quickly, but it's just an illusion.
Tasker is just one of those applications and is considered one of the most powerful Android tools, but it is completely unusable even with Root on this system. Even the most ordinary things, which are useful to me, as it is. turning on screen rotation and screen time out for certen apps do not work. Let's not talk about some more complex actions such as norification and starting AOD when there is an unread notification.
AOD itself is very unreliable, I installed 3 different "updates" of the AOD application itself to get it to work at all.
The notification on the lockscreen is just a "masterpiece" it only works once when you receive the notification, and whether you read it or not, it will never appear on the lockscreen again, no matter how many times you unlock or lock your screen.
As a root user of a phone that supports 90Hz, I used to be able to always and in all circumstances use that option, now the screen is almost always at 60Hz no matter what you set and there is no longer a possibility to "force" the phone to always use 90Hz even with an ADB command... All this did not increase the battery life in the least... it even decreased it because the screen is no longer black (which I could achieve on OOS 11 using Subststratum pure black tmeme) but mostly gray.
I still don't have time to dedicate a whole day to wiping the data and going back to the good old OOS... but if you don't want to just have the number 12 in the phone info... and if you use the phone for anything more than texting and answering on calls, it's better to redistribute with old security patches than to get frustrated with Color OS.
Even the most common application, phone book and phone dealer, is a step backwards for me, although I could get used to it if at least some of the basic things that I am used to as a user would work.
Bluetooth, WiFi... Mobile Data... Signal strength, I really have no complaints, it all works great. Preinstalled applications work well and it's a matter of habit and personal taste whether you like the design or not.
But if you use Tasker, Huawei watch, or are a root user who is a bit more demanding... know that I Color OS is very restrictive and that 99% of things will not work as they did on OOS... Especially if you come with OOS Beta 4 or 5 which had AOD working and if you are used to it, I would not recommend you to waste your time and switch to Color OS.
The number 12 is not worth your time, annoyance and searching for a solution for what was working beautifully and smoothly, just because it is a number higher than 11.
On the end choices is yours... Just like it was mine when I done misktake and update.

Have you tried any custom ROMs such as Pixel Experience? What are your thoughts on them if you have. I grew tired of waiting for OnePlus to release a stable 12 and installed Pixel Experience. I am mostly satisfied with it, although battery drain is more pronounced.

Your #1 mistake was to dirty flash a beta software into an older android version.
Even on custom roms, that's a very bad idea.

Actualy, that doesn't change anything... It's Color OS... and all working just it work on cleen install. So I didn't make any mistake there, except the fact that Color OS is not for me or anyone who like freedom of OOS... When I decide to be restricted like I am on ColotOS, I will buy iphone.
So, does your clean installation act differently... lock screen notificstion, AOD, can Tasker change you system settings (turn on and off AOD if you have any new notification, for example), can you force 90Hz in all apps?
Because thats are problems... I don't have any fingerprint or any other system lroblem except it's inconsistent and undefined... it's doesn't have all android 12 theming and look but it's not OOS costumization.
Anyone know of a fix for no signal? It asks for Oroaming funds, but I have an unlocked One Plus 7 Pro converted to the Global Beta 2.
My sim card is Tmobile.
