Is the galaxy s9 from straight talk unlocked out of the box? - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

Just wondering if anyone here knows if the Galaxy s9 from Straight talk is unlocked out of the box (as it’s been discussed here by different users in regards to the s8)
I have been looking for an answer all over the place but I still can’t seem to find a concrete answer

Yes it is unlocked, as long as 1. You bought it from walmart (not straight talk directly) and 2. you DON'T turn on the phone with the Straight Talk simcard inserted.
Make sure to remove the sim first then you can insert any other provider's sim and the phone will update itself to that carrier's settings automatically.

Have you done this yourself?
I'm thinking of buying a straight talk Galaxy S9 Walmart, but I don't see anybody else saying that it is unlocked, from what I've read all of the straight talk phones are locked...
Model number is: STSAG960U1CP

Yes, I have done this twice with two ST S9's from walmart. One working perfectly with verizon postpaid and the other with t-mobile postpaid.

Amazing! This is the one to buy then?:

Thats the one.

I got mine the stupid expensive way from Rent a center and I just turned it on and popped my straight talk SIM card from my old phone into the slot on the s9 and within a few seconds my service bar went from just having 4 or 5 bars with nothing to 4 and 5 bars with a big LTE above it. Don't even have to restart the phone for the changes to take effect.

You can use either one if you have your device SIM unlocked. All you have to do is pop in the new SIM, and you're good to go.

I've never used a GoPhone, or any prepaid service. I think you might need to activate the service on the prepaid phone, and then transfer the SIM to the Rhodium. I think you'll have to keep track of the minutes/units on the website for the service, if it's one of those pay-per-minute/unit services.
Anyway, as I mentioned, as long as your device is SIM unlocked, you should be able to use any SIM card from anywhere in the world in it without any problem.

[Q] VZW Activation

I was wondering what ways there are of activating the phone. I live in an extended network area and the closest Verizon coverage area is a 20 minute drive away. There is a Verizon store in town and they might have a little network set up there to activate the phones but I don't feel like going there. My Galaxy Nexus is going to be an upgrade to an existing phone; is there a way to just copy over the existing phone's activation? I thought there was some way to do that but I'm upgrading from a phone without a SIM card and thought there might be something different I have to do because of the LTE SIM card.
So, any ideas so I can avoid going to the Verizon store or having to drive 40 minutes just to activate the phone? Thanks.
you have to go to the store to get a LTE sim card.
you might be able to call customer service and get one shipped however.
if they sent the phone to you they shouldnt sent a sim but yeah if they didnt than you gotta hit the store. only way i know of sorry

The phone is being bought at WalMart ($50 cheaper than Verizon) and will come with a SIM card, but they tell you to drive out to the Verizon service area to activate the phone. I'd rather not do that.

[Q] Do I need a SIM Card?

Im coming from the Note 2 which has a non removable SIM to my knowledge. I used a relatives upgrade so I think Sprint assumed I have a SIM. Question is: Will I need to get a SIM card to activate the phone?

All Sprint LTE phones come with a SIM card (paired with the MEID and/or IMEI of the phone). No, you don't need to get a SIM to activate the Note 4. It comes with one already and will be activated/provisioned on your account when you activate..

So I'm assuming that the phone will come provisioned to activate using the phone number of the relative whose upgrade i used? Is this something we can call sprint and have switched so it activates using my phone number? Thanks for the help.

Just call in to C.S or use web chat and they'll handle it fine.

It will come with the SIM in the phone. I came from the Note II as well. All I had to do was go online to the activate tab. Boot up the phone, let it do it's thing and was all set. Took less than five minutes.

[Q] Travel Overseas and Use Local SIM card

Hello All,
I am traveling to Taiwan for several weeks. I would like to obtain a local sim card when I am there, and use it in my Verizon HTC One (M8). In the past, I would call Verizon and obtain the "unlock" code to allow me to roam on foreign systems. Must I do the same with the HTC One (M8) A while ago, in my random internet searching, I thought I saw something that said the M8 is a worked phone, and need not be unlocked to use a foreign sim. Just want to make sure I take care of what needs to be done before I find myself in a foreign land without phone service.
Thanks

If phone is unlocked it should also work with SIM card from another local (US) operator. This means you can double check this by inserting a friends SIM card from a different operator than the one you are using. Remember to change APN when testing data connection.

There is no such thing where a "certain" type of phone need not be SIM unlocked. It up to the carrier, and the AT&T and T-Mobile versions at least are SIM locked.
Although, I think (not certain) I saw someone here post that their Verizon version wasn't SIM locked? So the answer isn't clear.
EDIT: Just did a quick search, and it appears in fact the Verizon comes SIM unlocked out of the box:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2694903
But apparently, the only M8 variant (of the "Big 4") that is unlocked out of the box:

Unlocked, Dual-SIM Note 10+ - No Data on AT&T SIM

So - this is my 1st Dual-SIM phone, and I'm very happy to get away from having to carry 2 different phones (personal on T-Mobile; work on AT&T - in the USA). I thought that everything had been working correctly - until I was away from my Wi-Fi signal. If I have SIM1 selected for data (T-Mobile), everything is fine. If I select SIM2 - I get nothing. It always shows 3G for AT&T even though I'm in a very strong 4G area for AT&T.
I've been through the Access Point Names settings for AT&T and they matched what I found on AT&T's web site. I even duplicated them with a new name to make sure that they were correct - still nothing. I've played around with which slot the SIM card was in as well as only installing one at a time (just AT&T in SIM1, just AT&T in SIM2, etc.) rebooting the phone each time - still no luck.
Hoping for an assist or "things to try" from the community as I don't expect much help from AT&T on an unlocked phones. Any help is very much appreciated!
Thanks!

Welcome to the DS family. Does SIM card manager show 4G/3G/2G enabled for both SIM's? On my older Note 8 4G wasn't supported simultaneously so you had to manually switch the 2nd SIM to 4G but on my Note 10+ this limitation doesn't exist but still worth checking.

4G/3G/2G is selected for both SIM's, but still only shows 3G for the AT&T SIM.

That would've been too easy. Do you observe the same behavior if you swap the SIM card positions? Also what if you put in just the AT&T SIM by itself (i.e. does it ever get 4G in either slot)?

I've tried both slots with just the AT&T SIM - never get data and never anything but 3G. Strange thing is calls and texts go through...
Hmm, that sounds like it's missing an LTE band it needs to get 4G with AT&T. I don't have an AT&T SIM hand to test with but for the non-US Samsung phones don't have full support for the frequency bands US carriers use (I'm assuming you have an intl phone so correct if wrong.).
I have the dual SIM and get LTE on ATT. I reckon you need to contact ATT and tell them you are using a note 10+ and need LTE enabled.

Spent 2 hours on the phone with them last night. They had me set up the Access Point names over & over - no luck. They suggested I buy an AT&T branded phone. Big help...
I once came from another device to another device and had the wrong kind of sim for 4G/LTE. Or maybe the sim is damaged, or it's just registered wrong.
So: try Hard reset the device AND get a replacement sim card from ATT (can get them at the store and don't let them sucker you into paying for it). Perhaps that will do it.
Came across the post below - I do have an old AT&T SIM card (6 or 7 years?). Looks like an Android 9 update at some point caused issues with older AT&T SIM cards. I'm heading out to get a new SIM from AT&T tonight... Thanks for the attempts at helping - I'll update tonight and let you know how it goes. May be in for a fight - it's a corporate phone and I'm not authorized on the account...

So - I was able to get it working. I had been using the same SIM card for 6+ years. However, getting a new one didn't fix the issue.
They said that the IMEI number wasn't coming up as a valid number. I had a One Plus 7 Pro laying around, so I had them register the new SIM card to that phone, and it magically started working (the old Sim didn't work in it, either). After getting that working, I just moved the SIM to the Note 10+, and haven't had any issues, since.

Did you notice any signal degradation on T-Mobile with maybe lack of bands?
Lastly where did you buy yours from? If it was eBay what was the seller name?
Thanks
