Hello all, I'm interested in purchasing the RN5 Pro, and I've seen a lot of bootloader unlocking related problems. I would like to flash Lineage OS on it. But, how long could this unlock process take? Could they deny me unlocking forever? I apologise for the ad nauseum, because I know that this question has been circling around quite a bit.
Thanks!
as i know, it takes 15 day to grant permission to unlock bootloader (now it's 2months, im not sure)
Then the unlock process just takes about under 15 mins
dont be worry too much about it, it's really simple and ez
I tried to unlock the phone yesterday and the unlock tool showed 720 hours waiting period, which is 30 days, and I retried today and it was still counting (708 hours or so)
I heard some people getting 1440 hours, but don't worry, once you unlock the bootloader everything becomes available, and by the way, you could like MIUI, it has most of the root functions without rooting (Restricting wifi/data from specific apps for example and many many customizations).
I would say get the phone, as soon as you get it apply for the unlock, and try MIUI until you can get to unlock the device.

Thanks for the info! Appreciated. As far as MiUI goes, I don't dislike the look and feel much, but there are advertisements and spammy notifications everywhere, and that to me is unacceptable. On top of that, I'm a privacy conscious guy, so I don't know the kind of background tracking. So I'll most likely switch to Lineage if I get the chance to.
That really depends if your account has authorizations previously. if you have got authorizations previously for any of device. you can unlock any device without any wait. some times device association can take a little time. only if said device was associated with any other account previously

Never owned a Mi product personally before, I don't have an account. And will be buying a new device if I decide to do so.

i have owned multiple xiaomi devices and i was easily able to unlock it without any delay. may be because i activated devices only with the same account is already authorized to unlock.
whatsapp Acts funny on all custom roms / AOSP, that seems like whatsapp has made sure to be this way!
of you wana enjoy AOSP roms, buy A2 6X
you can stimply root it and keep the rom for good!
Hey there! The general bootloader unlocking wait time is 30 or even 60 days since the 1. September. It can be shorter, or there is no wait time at all if you have used a Mi account to unlock other devices before. But it depends on their mysteriously mysterious system. From what I read, it can make a difference if a phone number is associated with the account. But I wouldn't count on it for new accounts. Better expect the full and brutal 30 days unlock period.
As you mentioned privacy, it needs to be said that MIUI - the stock ROM of nearly all Xiaomi devices - is quite talkative and sends back data to their servers. They hide it in their terms of services, except that you are prompted to accept these terms of services once you set up your device. If you don't mind it, it should be okay and you can use your device normally until you can unlock the bootloader. After all, Google is also there in form of their Play Services and watch your activity as well. Buuuut, if you truly want to preserve your privacy, it's best not to use the device normally until you get to unlock your bootloader. Personally that is what I did, but rather because I really need and like to have root access on phones I own. In my humble opinion, the increased bootloader unlock time is there to force users to use MIUI. Previously normal times were 3, 7 and 14 days. In conjunction with the ads they want to force onto their users, and the data they collect, this just makes sense if you ask me. Despite this, and to mention positive points again, their phones are still really great value for the money. The Redmi Note 5 has excellent battery life, good mid-range phone performance, takes nice pictures as well and is basically just a pleasant device. Though, if you plan to use LineageOS, you will need to install one of the Mi A2 camera or Google Camera ports if you want to use LineageOS without having to sacrifice camera quality. Actually, with the Google Camera port the pictures of this device get even prettier than they normally look like with the MIUI camera! Might be a matter of taste after all, but I tested it myself and can just confirm what others said about the awesome picture quality.

It is a good thing the company will fix these issues and I told them about why the bootloader is unlocked and how eiu is buggy and a ton of other problems. Just see the screenshot for your self
I heard to allow Carrier Services (ie: VoLTE and WiFi Calling), they were required to lock the BL. It isn't much of an issue since we are able to flash the Chinese variant BL which is unlocked.
Who is the highest level executive that we have contact info for?
Wow now we have clearly information about future updates to come to our Pro 3 and the best, they want to make it look like stock android that is awesome! i can`t wait to see the results of that. i hope they do that for both Phones, LEX720 and the LEX727.
Now we have to wait, who knows when they drop the next Update or maybe direct EUI 6!
To them, this phone is a loss leader as a way to get people into their content business. They may not bother plugging every hole but I can't see them spending any engineering cycles to enable unlocking.

After nearly three years with my trusty Sony Xperia Z5 Compact, I feel it's time to move on. Got my eyes on this phone since like forever and now that OP6 is releasing I'm hoping for some nice price drops. Anyway, I've read some threads on getting started modding the phone, but I still have a few questions.
With my phone I'm used to having one (usable) ROM, recovery and kernel combo. However, OP5t seems to have quite a few. Which ones are recommended? Do I need to patch the kernel to be able to boot with a modded system partition and to modify it while Android is running? (dm-verity and Sony RIC on my Z5C, respectively.)
Which is the go-to Windows app for flashing ROMs? (Like Flashtool for Sony?)
Do I have to back up a partition so that the camera keeps working and to still be able to play DRM-protected content after bootloader unlock? Which partition do I need to restore to completely lock the bootloader in case I change my mind (and need warranty again)? (So it shows "locked" instead of "relocked".) (On Sony I had to do these with the TA partition.)
Thanks a lot for reading through, I know I wrote a rather huge wall of text.

You're entering into Oneplus country, options rule the roost. You are going to have to read about all the roms and kernals and make a decision on what best meets your needs.
I wouldn't start there though, OOS is pretty good in it's own right so the smart money is on taking it for a spin before you move on to the roms. Many who do will stay there and many of those who leave for the roms come back to it. It really is that solid. To that end I would start by either simply updating the phone to the latest stock and rooting/recovery or go to the open beta with rooting/recovery. The latter have been by and large very stable as a whole so you are usually safe using them in daily driver duties. In either case useful upgrades to stock android that came on the phone along with some tuning via magisk will get a lot of users where they want to go with stock reliability and functionality.
To install you're going to use fastboot so you'll need to set that up, there are several tutorials available if you're unfamiliar with it. Some people just don't want to take the time to get fastboot 101 capable, if you're of that mind you can use several tools which are available in the development section.
You didn't ask but I'm going to throw something out there for your consideration. The 6 is going to be here soon, I get the impression you hang onto your phones a long time making it perhaps a better choice. You'll wait a bit more than a month but gain a half a year in "newness" to start that long journey.

Came from the Xperia Z2 after about 4 years and just recently bought the OP5T.
AFAIK, there's no Flashtool like application for OnePlus devices so you just have to rely on TWRP and there's no such thing as that stupid TA-Partition on the OP5T (or any OnePlus device). You won't lose anything when you unlock your OnePlus device, not even your warranty.
I don't have a recommended custom kernel or rom since I'm very pleased with OxygenOS but the main reason why I'm not switching to a custom ROM is that of Portrait Mode and Face Unlock which aren't available on custom ROMs.
There is Skipsoft and another, the name escapes me but it's there in the development section. Face unlock (Google) and portrait are available depending on the rom but are problematic on most. It is a good point because the google face unlock is not as good as the OP implementation. There are also the nav gestures which most seem to like and I'm among them.
Thanks everyone! Already learned so much! (But I still have some more.) You said OOS is stable (I heard it has some RAM management issues), should I go for the open beta? Do the new features outweigh the bugs? How is Magisk and themeing on OOS (does the former have bugs/random reboots, is latter even possible (Andromeda on Oreo, maybe))? Is there a way I could preserve my data between ROMs? Are there some must have apps/mods I should totally try out? (such as stereo sound mod and Google Camera) Speaking of, is there a recommended Google Camera port for this phone? And lastly, how is the audio quality?
EDIT: Oh and can this phone be easily bricked? I remember no matter what I did with my Z5C I could always reflash it in flashmode.
OOS is stable as can be, even the beta is pretty darn stable, more so than some stable releases. Realistically if the beta isn't offering something you want there is no reason not to go with the official release. You can read about the beta and it's various changes over on that thread.
The only issue either OOS or it's beta in terms of RAM management is that it makes engineers over at Samsung envious, this wont be a problem for most of us.
I'm not a theme guy of I've nothing to offer there. Magisk has been fully functional and has worked without a hitch in my use. As with any device the more modules you load the more you increase your odds of having a conflict in much the same way as you run into with exposed. I'm using the stereo mod, modded youtube, volume steps, and Sony framework with their player. I've had Viper on and it worked without problems but I've since broke down and purchased high(ish) end headphones and don't use it now. You'll have to try your faves and see how it goes but if their mainstream and you don't go overboard with the modules I'd expect them to work.
I use a combination of Ti and nandroids and do a clean flash with every new rom, normally I'll backup and then just dirty flash when going to the next iteration of the same rom. The phone is difficult to brick as long as you follow instructions and pay attention to what your doing, That would apply to almost any modern android phone though, they aren't easy to brick and typically even when you think you've bricked it you haven't, you just don't now how to get out of it. As good fortune would have it a lot of people here have already stubbed their toe on almost any problem you can have and between them and the guru's you will seldom be left with an actual honest to God brick. Pay attention and you shouldn't have to encounter a day of "oh crap" while you wait for others to help you.
I'd rate the audio on speaker as just OK, the in-call quality up at the ear has enough volume and is clear but not special. That puts it right about the same place as I rate most flagship phones.
For now don't overthink all this stuff, the 5T is an excellent value as most will say but more it's in many respects a better day to day phone than my Note 8 was which I've since given to one of my kids. You don't have to make excuses for this phone, outside of a camera which is behind the flagship curve it's solid.
As many of you know the Nokia 8.1 is probably not going to get a method for a unlocked bootloader since H.M.D global shut down the exploit/way to aquire it.
I was wondering if there would be any reason that my beloved 8.1 couldn't be rooted by apps like Kingroot when they get the ability to root android PIE.
I didn't realize upon buying the phone that Nokia was so against rooting and im kinda bummed out that as of yet the phone isn't rootable yet. Might even trade it for a Pocophone and take the lack of NFC for granted
Do have mine unlocked and rooted. But the root is a messy task which will most likely take away OTA updates because any tampering is an end to the incremental OTA. Then flashing stock is a tough task too, because the awesome people at FIH Mobile forgot to disable fuse when bl is unlocked. Also, the process is kinda complicated and still under testing Given the complication, I'm sure it won't be freely available because it starts off by using paid tools to trigger debug mode.
I really didn't know that there's almost no way to root this phone when I bought it 2 months ago, but luckily the only reason I've rooted my previous phone (Mi A1) was because of Gcam which is supported out of the box on this one. So it's fine for me, but I do see that no rooting method could be an issue for some people.

I have already replaced the phone because of lack of root / development for this phone. Hated the stock ROM because lots of things didnt work with it (samsung gear watch, some wireless APs, car navigation, etc etc) and without the development this would never be solved.
Also I have expected better camera for the price of the phone.
WIll never buy any HMD device ever again.

XDA is all about root and ROMs
Every one clever would find out first BEFORE buy Nokia phones about the impossibility of rooting those.
I'm sure when root is possible in future ( some geek will find a way, its a phone and not a high end secure government secret thing lol ) more pple will come see this thread.

Agree.
Just like what we're doing at home. We're using Samsung Note 3 (Cyanogenmod rom) as online phone for local line. Before that, the phone with default OS was too lagging and cannot even install the online phone app I need.

Bro, can you please explain about how to root my nokia 8.1
Hi all, I just received my brand new POCO F3 phone today and I was hoping to unlock the bootloader and install a custom ROM. But when I tried to do that I got this message in the miui unlock software saying that I have to wait for 168 hours (7 days) and try again!

Do I have to wait for that much time or is there a quicker way to do this? And if I do wait and try again will it again complain 7 days later that I need to wait for more time? Please let me know.
And also, do I have to use my phone regularly in that 7 days or if I just leave it turned on is that good enough? Please let me know what to do. And thanks in advance!
No other way... Can only wait
Just leave your phone on, and leave it 1 side. And do not click on add account and device option again else your 168 hours countdown will reset
I see. Okay, I will just wait for 7 days then. It is such a bummer! I wish Xiaomi did not do this so that users can mod their phones right away. But it is just 7 days. So I will learn to be patient!
Is it necessary to unlock bootloader right after 7 days, or I can request to unlock now and actually unlock the bootloader after two or three months after?

basically what I asked is do I need to unlock right after that 7 days of waiting, or I can unlock later whenever I want.
I thought if I don`t unlock the bootloader right after 7 days, xiaomi will reset again countdown.
Anyway, I`ll have to wait for september to unlock the bootloader, since I have already unlocked it for Redmi Note 9s. A bit unnecessary from Xiaomi`s side, but it`s okay, I am waiting for Android 12 custom roms anyway.

The Countdown do not reset if you try sooner. It reset only when you remove and add a Xiaomi account.
When you try sooner, the mi unlock tool says the amount of hours remaining to wait.

Their priority is to convince you to continue to use their MIUI OS, so they can upsell you some of their online services and use your data for statistics and advertising. If you do not use their software, they stop making money off you. It's just in their best interest to make you stay on MIUI. Maybe after that week your start to enjoy MIUI enough not to change it anymore.

They had to do this to counteract people that bought their Chinese phones that didn't have a global release, slapped a bad MIUI custom ROM and resold them in other countries

Yes, making you wait a week is an annoyance (especially from a business point of view) but is only a temporary delay, the Anti Rollback feature is the main tool to block you, or a vendor of Chinese version, to exchange the MIUI version on your device.

nah, the main tool to block the weirdly moded custom roms are the locked edl mode on locked bootloader devices and the delay on unlocking bootloader.
back then (at least in SEA) the weirdly moded miui installed by third party distributors issue was BAD. it was widespread here and the mod were just bad user experience wise. most of them had lots of bugs (even by miui standards lol) and you couldn't update. so they started locking the bootloader and added timers, which did decrease the issue a bit.
but some were still bypassing through edl, which was especially bad and made it harder to fix since the moded rom often faked the bootloader unlock status so you couldn't unlock the device to flash an original rom, often needing you to short pins on the motherboard to bypass it through edl if i remember correctly.
the delay decreased the issue by quite a bit, but they were still bypassing it through edl, so they lock that also, which solves the issue. so i blame the third party distributors for this mess.
the anti rollback is just google tho.
back then you could apply your account to have special auth on the miui forums so you can still flash with edl and unlock the bootloader without having to wait, but i cant find any info on that now?
i know those account exist because my mi account is one of those account.

I am sorry but we are getting further from the original question. "Why we have to wait 7 days or whatever, before we are allowed to unlock and/or root our phones.
You are missing the POINT, that you, the regular user, CAN UNLOCK your phone and change it's factory given software by USING A TOOL MADE BY THE SAME MANUFACTURER OF THE PHONE. MIUI unlock and MiFlash are tools released by Xiaomi oficialy, to allow users, you and me, to mess with the software also put by them, on the device. These tools are not a service only software that leaked on the internet. Xiaomi gives you the option to download these tools and easily replace their software. They discourage such action, but they do not stop you from doing so. Therefore the 7 days of waiting, meanwhile maybe you change your mind.
After you replaced their software with the preferred custom Rom, the AntiRolback future kicks in.That is what blocks you to return to official MIUI software once again. You can return to OFFICIAL STOCK MIUI but it takes more steps and it is a little more time consuming, as is with unlocking. Both processes are meant to be annoying, but in no way they are blocking you out of it, and leaving you without recourse.
If they were completely against you messing with the software then your phone will brick or permanently lose features as a punishment for Unlocking or from even trying to do so. Like in the case of the new Samsung smartphones that disable completely all the cameras if you unlock your bootloader. Some features don't come back even if you restore your phone to the original software. Yes the camera functionality returns but the Samsung security apps no longer work EVER. Or like on iPhone 12 if you don't use original parts to repair it, you lose partial functions or stops working entirely.
A mass seller of xiaomi phones will have access to EDL software or can also have a Chinese based warehouse where they initiate the unlock and by the time the phone reaches Europe or US, they can easily install the software in another warehouse before shipping them to stores/buyers.
Seven days of creating voice profiles (and more).
Other ideas are welcome.

Oh boy, I see I did not explained well, glad keyoke87 understood what I asked haha
basically what I asked is do I need to unlock right after that 7 days of waiting, or I can unlock later whenever I want.

I'm sorry, what part of "You can unlock ANY TIME but only after those 7 day have passed" was not easy to understand. Any time, here, means between 7 days and 1 minute and Xiaomi's bankruptcy i suppose. Thee is no time window, only a minimum waiting time
I bought this phone, with my hard-earned money, from my own pocket. Xiaomi didn't give me this free or as a gift. I don't steal anything from them. I don't owe them money. And yet this **** wasting people's time as if I rented this **** ****ing phone. Sorry my language.

oh boy wait until you hear what apple is doing
I just received my phone and received the 168 hour countdown (I was expecting 1month lol)
Anyhow, can I leave the phone powered off for the 7days?
So, this is a friend's phone...
I know, whenever I hear someone say that I think to myself "sure buddy". But seriously, it's true, this is not my phone but I have taken on the task of repairing it. My personal phone is actually a Pixel 2 XL, which I chose so I would never have to deal with a phone that had a locked bootloader or a strict root policy; forcing me to scour through forums for solutions to problems that are created by the cell phone manufacturers and carriers.
Moving along, my friend's phone is a Tmobile Galaxy S9 (g960usqs6csgb) (SM-G960U)
I believe it has the Snapdragon CPU (qualcomm and qual was littered all over the bootloader logs) but I don't know what Android version it's on. Because I can't get past the initial setup screens... because, you guessed it, the device was factory reset and now it's locked because he doesn't have the previous owner's google account credentials and it won't allow further progress. A message is displayed at the wifi setup screen stating as much, and at this point the unit is entirely useless.
When I first saw him with the phone in hand, wrestling to get it to work, I proclaimed "I can fix it!! Not to worry!! After all, I used to root and ROM and ADB with the best of 'em !! Going back to the early days of android, cracking open the incredible, galaxy nexus, HTC 9, nexus 5, note 5, etc etc. My Pixel 2 XL was the first phone I didn't root, simply because it already had all the features I wanted, right out of the box! But this phone wasn't cooperating like the old devices. Apparently the carriers and manufacturers have incorporated new ways to deter nefarious activities and squeeze out every bit of money from us hapless technology addicts.
I digress. Is there any way to get past this? I've already downloaded Odin 3 and I believe I'm hot on the trail of this model's firmware:
https://www.sammobile.com/samsung/galaxy-s9/firmware/SM-G960U/TMB/download/G960USQS6CSGB/283293/
But is this even possible? Will rooting and flashing a new ROM remove the unauthorized factory reset lockdown? Will the device even let me get that far? I don't know anything about rooting the S9 but it's all here in the forums, I just wanted to know if there's anything I should be aware of in advance. I'm not too concerned with bootlooping/bricking or losing google pay or something similar because it's basically a paperweight already. But if there's a way to do this properly, I certainly don't want to mess it up irreparably by charging headlong into the fire when I might patiently tiptoe and emerge unscathed instead. I appreciate any help you might offer.
Thanks!!
Yikes, not a single reply.
No one's gonna touch this one, a?
At least I got a like. Thank you to the brave individual willing to sit back and watch the trainwreck go its course.
TLDR: Can I get past the Google lockout on a TMobile s9? Is it possible to unlock, root, and flash a ROM on an otherwise locked s9?
If your stuck on FRP lock then maybe this thread may help.

Thank you very much. Didn't even know what to call it so search wasn't very helpful.
