I've been reading about rooting the S8plus and I am unclear about rooting the G955U 8.0.0.
Can it be rooted, and either left stock or run a stable custom ROM and do I need to change kernel, bootloader?
As I skim through the posts for that phone from when the phone, in general finally became root-able but only certain versions. I kept reading posts saying that rooting Oreo was impossible or problematic or Snapdragon could but Xynos wasn't or the other way around. I finally gave up and thought I would try to get a solid answer here rather than spend another dozen hours reading the forum posts and still be confused.
Thanks in Advance for anyone's help with this. Here are the specs.
I have two G955U's both running Snapdragon 835 (MSM8998)
8.0.0 (Oreo)
armv81 version 4.4.78-13889051
Is there a way to root my device?
Sent from my [device_name] using XDA-Developers Legacy app
quick answer: Snapdragon = NO ROOT and Exynos = Root, so your two devices are Not Rootable.

Hi everyone, hope you're having an amazing day!
I was wondering if there is a root available for the SM-N910V running 5.0.1. I've looked on google, and there are lots of yes, and no answers. Could someone help clear this up for me?
Thanks!
There is not a root available for the retail edition of the Verizon note 4 on 5.0.1.

Dont search for root, root method is already there for developers edition, so the fact that ROOT IS ALREADY THERE is 100% true.
What you need to search for is either "unlock bootloader" or "rooted firmware" or "rooted kernel" or something else.
Not much so far.
Just make sure when u search google, click search tools and select more recent results. That way u dont end up finding most popular pages that are many many months old.

Actually, requesting root for 5.0.1 in this forum is quite appropriate and very different from unlocked bootloaders, rooted firmware or rooted kernel. In fact, installing a new kernel or rom usually requires an unlocked bootloader and getting that done usually requires a root method first so there's some chance of writing a new recovery. With root, methods such as what is now known as SafeStrap (the result of a technique discovered by Birdman, matured by myself and then claimed by another person who's made a habit of claiming others' work as his own) can allow for quite a bit of customization, but typically not so much as a new kernel, let alone different ROMs.
Right now, the state of the Note 4 is that only the Dev Edition (DE) has much of anything going on. You'll find all sorts of frustrating and unclear information about KingRoot, but it's of almost no use unless you think you can abuse it to search for a more complete and permanent root method, but if you knew how to do such a thing, I doubt you'd be here asking for root If you see ROMs or anything else advanced in this forum that doesn't specify it's only for the DE, assume it is.
I've been around since the days of CupCake (and built WiMo roms previously, along with some of the earliest ROMs and rooting) and based on experience, I'd say that the only chance left seeing root on the retail Note 4 is if another root method (new as of today/2015-12-28) is discovered elsewhere that applies to 5.x/5.0.1 OR the Note 4 sees another OTA and we get really lucky (unlikely).
exactly why am returning it and getting S5. But even with S5 its unclear if towelroot will work or not.
I assume it will if S5 was not updated to 5.0+ but runs older 4.4.4. Is this correct assumption ?
Thanks for informative reply.

Yes but I would do some reading in the Verizon s5 forum because there is a build cutoff for root on the s5. If you're getting a new s5 from Verizon the chances are low you will get one without the latest build at this point

Seller said its still on 4.4.4 which is good news.
I just now need to find a thread on how to root 4.4.4 S5
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784880
http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...w-to-update-to-g900voe1-5-0-keeproot-t3149784

Whatever you do don't take any OTA updates, some are forced so get it rooted asap and then use the pre-rooted lollipop images
[q] [official howto] complete guide to root & unlock bootloader for verizon note 4
Gents,
As the title says: This is EXACTLY what I'm looking for. The thing is that after looking and searching throughout this XDA section, here's what I've found:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/general/noob-how-unroot-phone-t3418431
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/general/guide-noobs-guide-to-perm-root-twrp-t3360883
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/general/note-4-verizon-bootloader-unlock-t3358913
http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...t/howto-bootloader-unlock-upgrade-to-t3398144
I would normally have no problem diving in head first into any of these threads. The issue is that even as I begin to read them, in each of these threads there's a handful of individuals claiming something like: 'Oh, you left this step out' or 'You forgot to include' this, or 'This only applies to this, but not that' and so forth.
I'm not really knew to the world of modding, rooting, theming, unlocking and so forth...but it does scare me a bit when there's so much information that seems to contradict other information or at the very least appears to be incomplete.
If possible, can someone with a solid understanding of the Verizon Note 4 and all things Permanent Root/BootLoader Unlock/Custom Recovery/Custom ROM installation please shed some light and provide some guidance for me on this thread?
I'm sure it would benefit many.
Just trying to get this Note 4 permanently rooted, with a kick-ass recovery...a snappy kernal and an awesome custom rom for my daily driver...all without bricking the poor guy.
Not sure how much it matters, however Just FYI here is some specifics on my particular Verizon Note 4:
Model Number: SM-N910V
Android Version: 5.0.1
Hardware Version: N910V.06
Please advise if possible.
Thank you,
BJ
You got here late............................
You need a History lesson. but I don't have time to give it to you. This thing has evolved. All the threads you mentioned have contributed to the testing and understanding.
Some of the OP in some of the threads have changed and no longer list the ROM's that first came out for Newly rooted Verizon Note 4. ( I wish they would bring back the custom 5.1.1 ROM's but they have moved on to Marshmallow )
I can tell you this. The first time you permanently root your phone, it should be on stock 5.1.1.
I created a thread mostly for my own use here http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...bilized-process-to-unlock-bootloader-t3375527
My thread can get you to a rooted stock Note 4 on stock 5.1.1 but my thread was not created for a newbie. You need a basic understanding of what you are doing.

You said it all right there!
I have tried several Marshmallow ROMs and I always come back to 5.11. In my opinion it is just a better operating system!
All of my apps are able to write to the SD card with no issues and that is important to me.

Is it possible to get permanent root on the Verizon Note 4 coming from Stock 6.0.1 ? If not, is there a downgrade procedure, coupled with a perm root guide?
Thx.
BJ.
Team,
So after some more searching...it looks like this may be what I'm looking for:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/general/guide-step-step-stock-n910v-6-0-1-to-t3426905
So, here's the last question (I know, I know)...but BESIDES CM13...are there any other recommended ROMS for Verizon Note 4 on Marshmallow?
Thx.
BJ
I know I'm a little behind here and that the S8 is a year old, but I have an S8+ coming and wanted to know what to expect. I see there aren't really any ROMs for it, but is root even possible? I'm not too worried about it because I'm coming from a Verizon Note 5 that I used for over a year without root. Would just be nice to have so I can go back to using my root apps. Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
35 views, no comments lol. Tells me exactly what I needed to know.
Hi,
Seems this phone is dead for Verizon users as the boot-loader is locked so you get official update to Android 8.0 and not 8.1 but hopefully in the coming month or so.. Samsung is known to be late so
There is root if you have BL versions 1, 2, or 3. Check the S8+ forum for ROMs. Also see the S8+ Verizon forum for ROMs. There are some custom (stock based) ROMs and the ability to install and use Safestrap on unrooted versions. Safestrap use is currently pretty limited. If you have a version 4 bootloader no-one has figured out how to root yet as far as I know, but there is some work being done. It is true that the bootloader is not unlocked so the options are limited.
Hello I am new here so I apologize if I am using the forum wrongly or if I'm posting these somewhere inappropriate but I have my mind clogged up with a good amount of doubts and I really feel like I need them answered.
I currently have a(n FLA-LX3) Y9 which I got some months ago, I got it instead of the 7X because I thought it was better specially because of the battery life but I've noticed that the modding and ROM community only circulates around the 7X as far as I've read, NOT the Y9. Then I got myself to comparing the two and I realized that they have the same octa-core set and CPU, which is the Kirin 659 evidently. When I found out about this I scratched and tilted my head in confusion regarding why there's little to no modding to the Y9 compared to the more-popular 7X, adding to this my honest desire to install OpenKirin on my device since I honestly feel EMUI is too annoying for me and I just prefer stock Oreo/AOSP
My questions rely on this. Is the 7X identical to the Y9? If so, can I install such things as fastboot, TWRP or OpenKirin to it? Are their ROMs different enough for them to stop me from installing stock Oreo on my FLA-LX3? I really, really want a vanilla android experience so I really need to know what I can and can't do with my device.
Thanks for answering the questions in advance. Cheers. :good:

The number one condition we have had here on the 7x , is a stock update to Oreo in order to use the gsi roms.
The Oreo update brought treble suppose to the 7x.
If your y9 got an ota update to Oreo, or originally came with Oreo, then download an app from play store . (Name is something like treble check). See if device supports treble. If so should be able to try to install one .
No direct info on your device, so try at own risk, and search some more to see if there is some forum our there for that device.

I just downloaded the app and it popped up as Project Treble being supported although it says Seamless System Updates are not because apparently my phone only has one set of partition which is slot A, I don't know if that makes a difference with the 7X.
I mean I do want to try and install OpenKirin but as I said I don't know if the risk is worth it without knowing these things and I tried looking around the forum to no avail since my phone doesn't seem to be really popular.

Biggest problem I see is there does not seem to be updates listed in team mt for that model.
So there is not way to get original images back if flashing open kirin turns out to be not what you wanted
If you have already unlocked bootloader and did install TWRP, you could use that to make an image backup of your current system.
But you would not have stock recovery anymore. To do the factory wipe needed for the open kirin rom
You could try stock recovery from other device. It possibly would be same.
There are full ota updates for model "fla" just not the lx line. The recovery from one of them could be same as yours. But I wonder how the language would be.
Anyway it seems a risk to try now, without someone else worth same device, and without full ota available
For starters, I am new to android. I have used an android for 5 years, but I have yet to tinker with it extensively. I have a lot of experience with Linux and command-line tools though, so my knowledge level is whatever transfers over from that.
I am getting a new phone, and I want to keep my s9 to do cybersecurity work on, particularly running kali nethunter (https://www.kali.org/docs/nethunter). As I am aware, for the version I will be running (lite), I just need TWRP (docs say root not required, but I thought installing custom recovery required root).
I read a bunch of threads on here, and it seems that it is indeed possible to root a snapdragon S9, is this still the case? If root really isn't required, how would I install a custom recovery? Would I run into any extreme issues?
Please excuse the ignorance, the information is kind of overwhelming to a newcomer.
