S-on but unlocked. What can I do with it? - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

Hi there, XDA. So as the title says, my phone status in bootloader is unlocked, but s-on. I know I've done this a year ago or so. Now I'm on a custom rom and I plan to go back to Oreo stock firmware because I want to install Lee Droid.
So the main question is after I install the firmware(zip + SD card) can I root the device and reinstall TWRP even if I'm not s-off?
Does the unlock status means my bootloader is unlocked?

If you are going to use an XTC Clip to unlock the SIM, it will also unlock the bootloader, at least, it did with mine
Thanks for your reply, I will be taking it to a shop to get it unlocked so I don't know what they will use to unlock it I will most Probably root the phone when it's unlocked

You don't need to s-off it, just root it once you unlocked bootloader.

You have unlocked your bootloader, now you have to install clockworkmod on your device, look in the forums because there is a thread about it (can't remember where) once you did install clockwork you can install different roms by going into the recovery mode. In the recovery mode you can select a zip file and install your rom you wanted... No s-off needed, just an unlocked bootloader, there are also several root scripts

Yes being that you're running 4.4.3 Sense 6, basically Sunshine is your only option. It's $25 , but it's very well worth it. It's literally a 1 click method for S-Off, and Unlocked Bootloader, and it checks to make sure it'll work on your device before it asks u 2 pay…

I don't have any experience with this. So if I do this and get S-Off and Unlocked Bootloader, I can then get root? Could someone maybe link me to the root method after getting S-Off?

On an unlocked or s off phone you simply fastboot flash the custom recovery of choice. After that you either flash a rooted rom or flash the latest su.zip to root your existing rom.

[Q] Unroot S-On HTC One M8

I planned on converting my One M8 to a GPE edition but I couldn't gain S-Off, so now I have a phone with root access and TWPR installed. In preparation for HTCs upcoming Lollipop OTA, I would Like to bring my device back to full stock so I can install the OTA. I can't seem to find a way to do this without having S-Off. Could someone help me please?
Thanks, Nathan

Will that remove my root user permissions too?
And do I need to relock the boot loader to install OTA's?
Thanks!

sakitech didn't mention anything about losing root or relock bootloader requirements to receive OTA updates after following his video.

Oh, sorry for not being clear xD
No, I don't think you will lose root and you don't have to relock bootloader afaik.
Even so.. you can always redo the process of rooting and unlock the bootloader after OTA update.. no biggie
but if you run stock rom and recovery.. it shouldnt affect root or if ure unlocked with OTA updates
I just reverted back to stock last night with s-on. you will have to relock your bootloader (I used a tool kit, but had to boot into the bootloader myself to get the toolkit relock it) and flash a stock RUU (exe or zip). I suggest using an exe to flash if available. I have a sprint HK edition so I used an RUU exe for that model, and all worked perfectly. I was able to install the OTA update they just released with no problem after I was back to stock.
sakitech's method should work too if you want to try and keep root and the bootloader unlocked

Htc m9 root failed!

If your bootloader is (re)locked, then I'd start with unlocking it again. I'm not sure that you can unlock the bootloader via HTCdev, but SunShine supports the Verizon M9. Check that out.

"The best" depends on your current firmware. Read Q4 for a more detailed explanation.

Thank you very much for the link! I hope it will solve my problem since actually this device was flashed with ICE rom and then I lost the data connection. Thanks again. I will try to use that solution when I have free time to work on.

No, I'm pretty sure you need to be rooted first before s-off if you're on nougat.
So,
1) unlock bootloader
2) flash TWRP and root
3) s-off using sunshine (25$)
Can i use the sunshine app to unlock bootloader on android 7 instead of htcdev
then use the app to s-off

As I mentioned, you need to unlock the bootloader and root before being able to use sunshine, so how can you use sunshine to unlock the bootloader if it's not already unlocked?
On Marshmallow you could do what you asked.
gotcha, I was trying to avoid using htcdev for unlocking bootloader

NO way around it now. I just got my HTC 10 over the weekend and went through the whole learning process you are. I think my phone was out of commission more than it was up and running all Sunday. Luckily it's pretty hard to brick.
