Hi Guys,
either I dont know how to search or there is no info on VPN on the forum(I probably dont know how to search) In any case. I need assistance. How do I setup a VPN on my TyTn running WM6 and also how do I get remote desktop client? I am sure this was around previously. Did MS remove it from WM6? Or was it HTC? It this is the case.. how can one get it back?
thanks!
here's remote desktop. How do you use it? I don't know how to set it up.
thanks!!!!
now for VPN....
cheers!
The remote desktop client is available in several places in this forum for download.
To set up a VPN:
add a new VPN server connection
enter the name / ip of the server you want to connect to
select the vpn type -- ipsec or pptp
next
enter your user name and password
finish
The only way I have found to connect to the von is to goto
Start-Settings-connections-connections-edit my vpn servers- -- tap & hold MY VPN
select connect
you must be using a plan that assigns you a public IP (not WAP)
hope this helps

Thanks cmccarter, done it but how will I know I am connected.. It does not say connected anywhere that I can see and when clicking/hold on the item it gives me the option to connect again, not disconnect as I would have thought The other thing is terminal server does not connect. It connects fine on USB. VPN/Remote desktop connects fine using normal internet on pc from outside the network. So I believe the network settings are fine.. How would I know though if I am on WAP or get an IP. Also ow would I know if the VPN is connected?
thanks

i also have struggled getting rdp to work over a vpn, in particular over 3+/hsdpa
the only i found in wm5 was to add the vpn connect to the exceptions list of the connection manager, so that it didnt disconnect the vpn whem connecting the rdp.
this occurs more when u use an ip address to connect to a work intranet.
suppose if u use the dns name of the machine and not the ip address then it isnt that much of an issue. in wm5 when u put the ip address in it assumes a an internet rather than intranet connection so it disconnects the vpn to look for the ip over the internet
putting the ip into exceptions forced wm5 to not disconnect it when rdp was looking for it.
i cudnt get it to work this way in wm6 so i am also looking for an answer on this.
rdp to my servers when they have crashed and i am on the road wud b wonderful....
Hi,
I've a similar problem.
I use a VPN-1 SecuRemote that normally connect my PC directly to the company network.
Well, using the share modem tool, I'm not able to reach the gateway.
the share modem system give me a private IP that establish a connection between PC and TYTN.
This connection use the Tytn like a gateway to navigate in internet.
Someone know to solve this issue?
Tanks a lot
if i select start the vpn connection, nothing happens - and i can`t ping the IP`s in the VPN. so i think the vpn ist not open - OR the routing entrie is missing....
is there some shiny "pptp - standalone" client?
greets, Nik
for some reason i dont think the vpn option works over 3g/hsdpa, atleast not on my device using t-mob web and walk.
if i connect the vpn when using wifi it connects and everything is fine, if i try and connect when i'm already running a 3g connection it doesn't work.
i dont think the radio stack is capible of handling a 3g connection and a vpn connection. we might need to go down the route of getting a seprate wm vpn client.
I have an Amazon Fire TV Stick. I use xfinity wifi hotspot which requires that I sign in on a browser that normally on a Windows or Android device, the browser will automatically open up and take me to a login page.
I sideloaded Firefox to my AFTV Stick but that doesn't seem to load up the page even if I try to connect to the wifi network.
Is there some kind of workaround for this? Thanks!
I would like to know this also as I plan on taking the stick with me when I travel and would be connecting to Hotel wifi
I can't speak to the OP's question but as to hotel access you can usually call the hotels Internet help line with your MAC address from your Fire TV and they can manually log you into the network.
Would also love to know if this is possible. I on a little vacation and took my fire tv with me, ready to watch away, but can't connect to the WiFi, since there is a browser login ...

Could you enlighten me on how to do that or direct me to somewhere? Thanks!
well i am guessing something like this

will have to try that and see
I often take my AFTV when on the road and faced this very problem. I've overcome this by connecting to the hotspot (in my case the hotel's wifi network). The AFTV should say something like "Connected with a problem" or something to that effect. Then I back out and go to Applications, and launch a browser, in my case Chrome, and the hotspot router should direct your browser to the login page, where you can enter the needed credentials.
However, of course you would need to have a browser installed. Works most of the time though some hotels have routers that for some reason won't auto-direct you to the login page until you manually type in a website address to go to.

Same - just did this in fact. Had to use my phone as a hotspot to install a browser (lighting) first.
I don't think it would be possible on the firestick unless amazon added some browsers to their store.

Why? You could side load a browser on the stick just the same I assume.
I side loaded Dolphin browser onto my AFS. Seems to work well.
Update : when trying to enter address or url, the search dialog box comes up. It starts to load the Web page but immediately closes the browser. So for me, Dolphin doesn't seem to be working.
What browsers are you all using successfully to browse Web pages?

To the original poster, I know exactly what you're talking about. What I had to do was plug in a mouse so I could click.
Reloaded the page a lot of times and it took forever, but you only have to enter this once.
fix!

You can use the built-in web browser in the ES File explorer to go to the login page. The ES file explorer is free and available on the amazon app store.
I have Chrome side loaded in my AFS. Works well. Able to get to YouTube website and play videos easily.

Hello everyone....I am running pre-rooted version 51.1.40.0_user_514006420 on the Fire tv. While running certain apps like Rdio, Hotlist Internet TV & allrecipes, I get the following error:
"A secure connection is recommended to use this app. we were unable to establish a secure connection and recommend that you try again later. "
No matter how many times I try running the app again, I keep getting same error message.
Any ideas on what could be causing this issue and what would be solution?
PS; Fire tv is connected to the US VPN with PIA.
I donĀ“t know these apps but probably they request https:// connections instead of http:// and maybe your VPN doesn't support https (HTTP Secure) or it needs to be enabled at first.
Also, it could be that the apps do not allow a VPN connection. Lot of sites and apps are no longer allowing users to use VPN connections to visit their site or use their apps. One the site detects you are using a VPN thy will stop you from entering.
To check if your VPN supports https:// if you have a browser just o to google.com, then look in the address bar and if the address starts with https:// you will know if thats the problem. Google addresses will always start with https:// unless your VPN does not support it or if you have https:// turned off somehow.
Ok, I am in a hotel and have tried to plug-in my Fire TV Stick, but it doesn't find my home wifi - no surprise - darn! I've forgot the standard Remote Control!!!! ARGHHH
So I configure my phone as a wifi hot spot and name it as my home wifi (with the same password) - voila! I can connect with the Fire TV app for Android but as soon as I go to reconfigure the wifi to use the hotels wifi it disconnects and I can no longer access it at all from the Android app.
Now, is there a way to reconfigure the wifi-settings manually either by plugging it into a computer via USB or some other app that will emulate the stock remote that comes with the Fire TV?

If you are using a wifi remote control app like Wukong Romote, your phone and the AFS has to be on the same network for your phone to be able to find it.

I find the control can be use in this app called CetusPlay, you can find it on google play store
Use a second smartphone or tablet with firetv to reconfigure the stick to the hotel WiFi
For the "not long enough, want to read" explanation -
As the OP said, configure 1st smartphone as a WiFi hotspot with identical name and password as home WiFi.
Firetv should automatically connect you this when powered up.
Connect 2nd smartphone to this network (probably will automatically connect as it will 'see' it as its home network)
Use the firetv app on 2nd smartphone to navigate to system/settings/network (not exact steps but you should be able you find it) and reconfigure the firetv stick to connect to the guest/hotel WiFi.
Once connected turn off WiFi hotspot on 1st phone and connect it to guest/hotel WiFi.
Start firetv app, search for firetv and connect.
Discover that most content is geographically controlled and cannot be viewed and settle in for a season of Man in the High Castle.
@finkle - this was a good idea, but sadly as soon as the other wifi is selected on the fire stick it changes to the hotel wifi and opens the browser page to enter the credentials, which simultaneously disconnects the remote app! So close ;-(
That's what you want to happen.
Once the firestick is connected to the hotel Wi-Fi you connect either of the remote devices to the hotel Wi-Fi and you're good to go - the firestick and device will both be on the same network so they can chat..
The hotel Wi-Fi I used this on only required confirmation that you wanted to connect and accept their usage terms, which the firestick coped with fine.
Honestly, it worked in real life!
Hi,
I tried the above steps, but when I then connect my mobile to the hotel network, it then cannot find the firestick. I have the firestick stuck on the hotel pop up asking for the password, but can not navigate to enter the password in. Help?
Thanks

ok i have done everything exactly as you have said, but unfortunately my fire tv is not automatically connecting....Any thoughts on why? I know i reconfigured the hot spot correctly because i disconnected a 2nd smart phone from the current wifi and it automatically found our home network and connected...
What i typically do is connect my FireTV stick to the USB port on my computer, i can then manually send keyevents via ADB to connect the device through the hotel portals, yes it is tedious but once you get it connected you should be able to connect to it via Fire TV remote App on your phone. you can then plug it back into the wall and when it reboots it should auto connect to wifi this time.
P.S. this will only work if you have already previously enabled developer mode and allow adb connection on your fireTV stick.
Oh clever people, I hope you can help? I am absolutely not techy-minded, I wish I was..
I've read through this thread, and I fear there is no help for me..
I was bought a firestick by a well-meaning friend, who set it up for me... About 18 months ago. I have since moved house, and the move has meant the remote is misplaced.. So I downloaded an app that I can use as a remote. However the firestick is still linked to the old wifi, of which I have no idea what the username or password was....
So am I buggered? A useless firestick?
Please advise!

I found this answer on the Amazon help page ( https://www.amazon.com/ask/questions/Tx3ERA8C5GDSLWS?_encoding=UTF8&sort=helpful ) :
All tvs have a cec option under settings. Google search cec settings and it'll help ya. It lets you control hdmi plug ins with the regular tv remote. Tried it on one of my tvs and wouldn't work. Tried it on another tv in the house witch is different brand and it worked. I was able to set the wifi back up and then was able to use the fire stick remote app on my phone. Good luck
Someone confirmed that it worked for them. if not then you can order a new remote fairly cheaply: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LORGAG6/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza
Problem Solved
Hold down the home button on your Amazon firestick remote until you get a popup on your tv screen that the remote is connected. This will take 5-10 seconds. No internet necessary. Cheers!!
Thank You!
This CEC on my visio worked perfectly. we haven't been able to use one of our firesticks for quite a while now. thank you!! and no... holding down the select button on a diff remote does not work..
Enable the CEC Setting on your TV

Go into the settings on your tv and enable CEC. I have a Vizio and it worked for me.
In your search engine type: How to Enable HDMI-CEC on Your TV, and Why You Should then click on the HowtoGeek link
In case anyone runs in to this in the future (including myself).
If your stick is rooted then you can manually configure the WiFi over ADB/USB in the file /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
My situation is that one day i switched my tv input from blue ray player to fire tv stick as ive done for a long time, but this time when itd boot up it would hold on the home screen and the 3 dots, and then network connection lost. But nothing has changed with my wifi, all my other devices still connect to wifi just fine. And i dont have the remote and have been using my phone to navigate my fire tv stick. Any advice?
Now its bootlooping after it shows network connection lost for about 1min then reboots.
Could provide steps as to how to reconfigure Wi-Fi setting in the Fire Stick via ADB?
So I was going to put this up as a question but I figured it out, so I just want to share
I was wondering why my watch couldn't connect to my phone via WiFi when I was at the office, despite us having WiFi in the entire facility. I could log into the WiFi network from the phone just fine after inputting my credentials via phone browser, and the watch would connect to the same network, but I always got a disconnected status.
As it turns out, I also had to log into the corporate network's security page from the watch itself, so here's what I did.
Install a browser on the watch (Wear Internet Browser)
connect the phone to the corporate WiFi
fire up phone browser, this automatically loads corporate security page, and log in with corporate account
turn off bluetooth on the phone to disconnect the watch
connect the watch to the corporate WiFi
fire up watch browser, this automatically loads corporate security page, and log in with corporate account
PROFIT!
that's it! now I can leave my phone on my desk, go to the pantry, or to a meeting at another building and still get notifications.
This could also be useful for when you're at an airport, lounge, coffee shop or hotel and want to connect your watch to the free but secure wifi hotspots that require a login via browser. :good:
