Hi, what's the procedure to use OTA or flash update on rooted (magisk) device without losing data?
I tried before by flashing OTA through twrp and reflash magisk but it ended in bootloop and losing data. I'm on official stable. Thanks in advance.
Bump. Guys how do you update rooted global stable like dirty flash? I've only managed to "update" by clean installation.
dirty flash. download full rom format zip then flash with twrp without wipe anything
Without re-flashing magisk and twrp? Are you sure?
use redwolf recovery for ota update flashing

Hey guys. I am still on marshmallow on my op3. I am rooted and have twrp recovery. My question is what firmware/modem do I need to flash before I update to latest Nougat update and if my steps below are correct.
I would prefer not to do a clean install.
My steps would be:
Download full rom
Flash any firmware if required - this is what I need to know
Flash Magisk as I need root
Profit?

this is stock rom, you don't need to flash any firmware...
if you're coming from MM, i would recommend sideloading the rom, wipe everything, then go back to stock recovery then sideload then before 1st boot fastboot TWRP again, then reboot to TWRP and flash Magisk...Profit.
if you want to flash from TWRP without going through this (which i don't recommend), make sure in TWRP to format data as f2fs, wipe everything then flash the rom, and then form TWRP flash TWRP again, then reboot to recovery (not system), then flash Magisk.

Thanks a ton for replying. Another question for you. I get the OTA notification. I could just let that run and flash twrp after the installation right.

if you're already rooted it wont install..and you can't flash the small ota file from TWRP, you have to flash the Full rom (1.4 GB)...
how you download is up to you, but why download from the update when there's many links available around !
Thanks for all the help. I flashed the new update successfully.

Oh ok. I just flashed full rom via twrp after wiping cache and Dalvik cache.it updated fine. I wasn't sure of magisk.
I've been trying to install OOS 4.1.0 for a few hours at this point without any luck with any method. Every time I try to install it I just get a bootloop and I have to reflash 4.0.3.
Things I have tried:
Flashing incremental OTA zip (from TWRP and official recovery)
Flashing full OTA zip (from TWRP and official recovery)
Reflashing stock 4.0.3 boot before installing
Dirty flashing 4.1.0 full zip over 4.0.3 and 4.1.0
Wiping system and cache before installing
I feel like I've done just about everything beyond fully wiping my phone and everything I've tried has never given me any problem when updating in the past, does anyone have any ideas what I could do to make this work?
Flash Twrp 3.0.4.1 by jcadduono
Wipe data-dalvik-system-cache to do a Clean flash.
Flash the 4.1 Oos.
Flash SuperSu 2.79 Stable or Magisk if you want root.
Reflash recovery again. Reboot to recovery. If it works reboot to system. If not flash recovery again. Reboot to recovery to check if it works.
Incremental ist alwys a bad idea if you modified your prhone. TWRP is a modification. SO ALWAYS use FULL zip from TWRP. But why this causes a bootloop in your case... dunno. I always use blu_spark TWRP and have no problems.
I'm on global beta, unlocked device with magisk and custom recovery, how do I update to latest beta without messing anything up?
do I download the incremental update and flash it in recovery or do I have to install the full rom again? in that case, do I need to format everything or is it just like a custom rom (flash ROM and clean only caches)?
thanks
If you are using orange fox recovery then you can download incremental update and flash it without wiping any data
If you are using any other custom recovery then download full beta ROM package and flash it.
You may need to reflash magisk after flashing miui rom

Official TWRP will not be able to update with the OTA update, only with the full ROM zip. There seems to be some other recoveries capable of that but since I don't have any experience with them, I refrain from naming them.

So how can I update oos while keeping the root access and not losing twrp recovery?

Assuming that you are on 9.0.2 and want to update to 9.0.3, you wipe system, caches and data (excluding internal storage) and flash 9.0.3 full zip. Then boot back into recovery (without booting into system). You should boot into TWRP. If you do, flash Magisk and boot into system. If stock recovery over writes TWRP, flash TWRP image in bootloader (fastboot) and then Magisk and boot into system.
If you are on Oreo and want OOS 9, it is slightly more complicated. You will have to format data (take a backup of your files and transfer to PC/Laptop) and then boot back into recovery and then flash the ROM and do the steps above. This is because of encryption issues.

Yes I'm on 9.0.2 and want to update to 9.0.3
Is there any other way to do it without losing all the data?

Beware that there are some reports of the requirement of formatting again when updating from 9.0.2 to 9.0.3, though I did not face it. A backup is a must (on PC/Laptop, not on the phone itself).
I don't know of any other 'safe' way of doing it without data loss (assuming that by data, you mean internal storage).

You cant update with OTA updates, you need the full rom.
I dont know how you updated to (8.0 to 9.0 the first time),
i unrooted and reset my prone while still on 8.0
and then i updated to 9.0 with official recovery after that i installed twrp and rooted with magisk.
If you dit anything different you might run into problems.
1. Download and update to the latest magisk in TWRP. (If you already have it installed skip this, but still download it to a folder on your phone).
2. Download the full rom to your phone, full rom here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3/how-to/rom-oxygen-os-9-0-3-android-pie-oneplus-t3937636.
3. Install the rom with twrp, no need to wipe anything.
4. Right after install the latest version of magisk.
5. Reboot your phone to system.
6. Wait until phone starts (it might take up to 7/10 minutes).
7. Done

Yes, but have a backup.
If I have only flashed Magisk but preserved the stock recovery, can I take an OTA update normally,i.e, download and reboot when prompted? Do I still need to restore stock boot imgs or will it get overwritten anyway? The update in question is V11.0.9.0.PCOMIXM. Please help me clear my doubts before I proceed with the installation. Thank you
