MCU KD Board failing - MTCD Android Head Units General

Hello guys, I have several problems with my HU. It have some bad contact over the MCU board and cant find it.
I trying putting little tips of cork under the board and I had relative success but on the road.. still fails..
the symptoms are related to TFT in first place, white screen and some times suddenly reboot.
I can hear a sound like fried when is in a bad contact. If I press over the board, it rects, but when release the pressure, bad again.
It make me nuts.
Im thinking to do a REFOUND in the oven... I just try everything.. no solder points damage at simple view..
Please, if any body here have deep electronics skill, let me know.. need some help.
Thanks

If you haven't ready, try obtaining one from your seller. If seller won't, check for a similar unit from another reseller.
I got my replacement from Xtrons, you've just got to figure out who to contact. Also Hotaudio, their guy is brilliant.

Thanks @marchnz, but now my som is garbage. trying to solve/find the problem on MCU, something was wrong and som starts to sing with cheering noise... and cant be mounted/ flashed any more...
In first attempts, I was able to get MASKROM state, but on any action I try, an error occurred. After a couple more of attempts no more MASKROM state was reached.
Now pc detect some thing connect, only if I disconnect GND.... I f....ed up.

It could be a range of things. Does it change when you move it, press the sides, tap the screen? Does it do it by itself.....when it is just sitting there...no external movement. More info needed.

it sounds as if the connector inside the phone is coming loose. If you are able, try and pressure the connector so the connection is good.

Thats the connection i am referring to. If you need assistance in dismantling the hermes, try the mod, Mike Channons guide
If it is not this, then i am not sure...
Do this as a last resort as it will void any warranty you may have with your phone... it also sounds as though the screen is on its way out.

Slight Problem

Hi all. I cracked my screen and being unable to find any guides i decided to go at it alone.... The result was mixed. While i managed to replace my cracked screen with a new one i accidently ripped off one of the solders(not sure if that was the correct term) that connected the internal head piece to the flexi board and now i cannot hear anything. I have tested it by ringing another phone and playing music through it and then pressing on the broken circut i am able to hear the music. My question is what would i use to stick it back together?
I didn't take it back to be repaired in the first place because i bought it unlocked and the phone comes from eastern europe.
I hope this is in the right place.
Any help would be wonderful. Cheers
well if it is a loose solder joint then you need to resolder it back to the board. As it sounds like you are unfamiliar with the terminology, you may also be unfamiliar or uncomfortable with doing this yourself. My appologies if this is not the case. Any rate I would find someone that does xbox or Wii or small electronic repairs and chip replacement that can solder it back on. Some of those pins are tiny.
If you push on the connection and it works, then it just needs to be resoldered.
Good luck, let us know how it goes.
hi InRBigness,
Thanks for the reply. Yes this is the first time i have done something like this and we all have to start somewhere. I have just started to use this site and have found it very helpful.
I also find that i am a hands on person but not a technical person. So saying that i am confident in trying. Thankyou so very much for the advice and ill let you know what happens.
Just tried melting the metal that was already on it using the solder and it works great again. Crystal clear. Thanks again for your help.

The Cause Of Screen Flickering With A "Possible Solution"

Many One X owners, including me, has be having from display/screen issues that are quite annoying. And apparently, none has a definite answer as to what the main cause is. hTC has exchanged all those faulty devices, claiming it's a "hardware" issue...while in fact, it's their stupid back covers...i'll explain as we speak.
First, to know what screen/display problem i'm talking about, please refer to this Video.
Few days ago, i got my hands on a "Dead" One X...but i just refused that fact...because it just works! but no screen....screen is always blank....can touch it, go to dealer and make a phone call even. Sometimes the screen turned, sometimes, and it was like in the video, exactly like it.....so what's the problem?!
yesterday, i'll be honest, i got mad at this phone and held it with a tight grip...my finger happened to press just above something...and the screen turned on! worked great in fact! i was astonished! it just worked....but, oops, i turned off screen, then when wanting to turn it back on...blank...
I kept pushing on the back casing of the phone, trying to find the same place that made the screen turn back on...and viola, same place pressed on, screen back on.
Wanna know what's causing all of this?
Here you go:
Click me!
And those connectors Should be in good contact with this on the back cover
Click me too!
But you know, hTC ****ed this one up, just like it does on most devices with connectors on the back cover...*sigh*...like the sensation for example...
So what to do now?
i tried a bunch of things, and almost broke those connectors with a stupid thick aluminum foil on top of them...
also i tried bending them up, but that doesn't help either, as when the cover pushes them down, their shape will change and well...didn't work.
i also tried putting aluminum foil on the metal connectors on the actual cover...didn't help as well!
it seems only pushing on it from outside does the trick!!
i also tried pushing on the connectors together while the back casing is off, didn't work...as it seems there must be a triple connection...board, connectors, and cover...
I think the only solution would be with a new back casing? but...if hTC f****d it up with this one, wouldn't all back casing suck too?? or is this a manufacturing problem that the connectors are just short and won't connect well?!
here are pictures of how the phone turned on magically after pressing over that connector, and another of how the screen gets messed up when the, well, there's not a good connection...Thank you hTC!
Sample 1 Sample 2
Tomorrow i will buy a new back casing and report if that helped me or not.
I only came to this because i have no warranty...if you have warranty, please consider an exchange!
Oh, and finally, i was able to get into bootloader, first time i saw that screen! always has been blank!...pushing on the connector also did the trick.
Finally!
Soooo...comments?
If anyone has an idea on how to make the back casing come in better contact with those connectors, please let me know.
UPDATE
Hmm, why did you put this into Q&A?
what? in a bad mood and wanna bash me?
where should i put it then? as people with such problem would come ask here, am i right?

Well nah, would post it into General , as this was more like a guide. I wasn't bashing.. and not in a bad mood... If anything I bumped your thread up...
Also wanted to say that those contacts and that case seems to be f..cked up in general. As next to those you have the WIFI ones which in another thread, thats in General is shown how to fix...
My first comment was a compliment and you could clearly see I was smiling as I am on my avatar smiling. No reason to get defensive...

Soldering would fix this!
putting two round solders on the gold plates of the back cover. i will try that tomorrow. but i fear they would squash the connectors on the board? as that's what happened when i used two tiny balls of aluminum foil....one connector got squashed by it and i had to push it back up and play with it to make it look normal again.....hmmmm

waw another fellow citizen
so before we go ahead and go
doooom gloooom htcccc suxxxxxxx
lets first affirm tons of people have no problems with their wifi and their screens
so yes those connectors issues whether screen or wifi are another forum of a manufacturing defect, things might not be perfectly aligned and hence the issue
the flickering issue your thread title suggests finding the source of, isnt related to this, 90% of the corruption we saw out of box on the HOX turned out to be software including the back-light flicker which HTC fixed by readjusting the LCD voltage
moving on to your question a new back cover might very well fix it unless the misalignment is on the board
but im wondering why is this pin related to the screen to begin with? the Sensation didn't have such a pin you could remove the back cover and the screen kept operating, also the disassemble photos that were posted for the HOX showed the board and screen running perfectly without the back cover
as for the stupid copper foil, make sure you don't loose it unless you are planning to make a bomb its added to distribute Tegra3 heat

Before you do that, please check the WIFI thread. There was already one member that described that soldering or adding a wire might be possibly harmful in the long run.
Changing the electricity stuff, how its called, the resistance or something (for the antenna though)
I'm having the same damn issue (check the picture) and thanks to Arabology for the well explanation on the problem. what I did was to send my phone to the service center and they told me it will take 3 working days (today was just the 1st day) for the technician to diagnose the fault and decide whether to replace the device or to repair it.
given that its a well known defect - should I just demand an exchange for a new device just incase if they revert that they repaired my phone? because I am sure the chances for the problem to reoccur is high.
Also just so you know I purchased this phone only about 3 months ago in HTC roadshow launch of OneX in Malaysia. HTC needs to come out with really quality products otherwise they will loose all their customers to samsung & apple (I believe they already lost major % of their loyal customers to their rivals)
oh well hope to get a good news soon. will keep u guys posted.
Update:
well, My One X is just cursed, few days ago it feel off my hand and the screen got cracked. now i'm waiting for my local repair station to get hold of a One X digitizer.
ALSO, HUGE NEWS, seems i was wrong. it's not the connectors. it's the whole part where there is a copper kinda sheath over it...i guess that's where are the cores are plus the Nvidia Tegra chip??! turned out, when i push there, that the screen lights up. at first i thought it's the connector, coz that's the most reasonable right?
what could be wrong under that? well, that place can be taken off, there's a metal housing that can be lifted off....idk, nothing seems wrong there...but seriously, just a slight push lights up the screen! so now i'm using the oldest trick in the book, i put a wrapped paper at the back of the casing, just where it will push over the place i talked about, and now screen is always on....just this small push does the job!! no more flickering!
i repeat, it's not the connector nor the back casing.......only God and hTC knows what's going on...
i did further investigations and tried to relate the "push" to any connections that could be on the board from the other side, but after disassembling the phone, there does't seem to be anything on the other side of the board that needs that certain force to help the screen to light up....idk, this just boggles the mind.
...anyone has any clue?!?
BTW, phone is working great even with the cracked screen, playing Dark Meadow just fine

i say you should demand an exchange. hopefully the device they'll give will be of a different tier of products that doesn't have that silly, unknown problem.
also, i'm pretty well sure that they won't repair your device. as i read many users regarding this issue, all of them got an exchange......seems pretty messed up. and i doubt my paper trick will hold long before this issue comes back

now that i have a paper inside my back casing, i can see that my WIFI connection is not at it's best, because of the extra space it took. so i'll most probably solder all the connectors

there was some guy, who posted a youtube video of when he pushed a certain area of his screen (the front part), it would switch off!
It only did it when pushed in that area, it was literally like a second power button.
Sorry I don't know exactly what it was, just the fact that somebody else had a similar problem!
HTC repaired my phone as the screen was faulty, it had a yellow tint, when i sent it for repair it did have screen flickering, ever since its come back, with a new screen, i rooted it and also put in the NEW ARHD rom, 2.05.2 base or something, it has stopped flickering :fingers-crossed:

Finally found someone with the exact same problem. I haven't been able to use my hox properly for weeks. Think I need to be sending back to HTC
Sent from my X10i using XDA
Finally I've got my OneX replaced with a new unit. Hoping this will not have any sort of hardware faulty anymore.
interestingly. while waiting for my turn in the service center, I was just talking to a guy sitting and waiting beside me who came to report a problem with his OneX
and apparently its his 4th time visit to the service center. And all his previous 3 visits ended up with his OneX getting replaced each time....and each time with a different hardware issue (screen flickering / dead pixels / color faulty). Oh man....I thought the OneX was the best quality product from HTC.
and now I'm having a slight regret that I shud have just waited for another 2 more months and bought the SIII instead. God knows what other problems my OneX is going to come up with.

Probably what's referred to as a dry joint or some other connection not connecting very well, not uncommon in electronics.
You need to get it repaired or replaced, simple as that. If it is a dry joint under one of the chips that use a ball grid array of solder points, you will never be able to sort that out yourself and it would be scrapped more than likely rather than a repair attempted for such a fault. To repair, it would need to go into a special over to heat it enough to melt the solder under the chip. Exerting pressure will just eventually make things worse as you can end up fracturing more of the soldered connections as there is little give to resist flexing.

Water damaged phone stuck in a boot loop? Don't give up just yet...

I thought I'd share my experience with this, as I've seen posts in the past relating to a water damaged phone boot looping and I don't think I've seen a proper solution given.
First thing's first, this advice is in relation to a very specific type of boot looping. Nothing to do with rooting, or software bugs. This is boot looping that has come about as a result of water damage. It may not have been long, maybe a couple of seconds in the toilet or some brief rain exposure. Whatever it is, you know your phone has been exposed to some water and it has begun boot looping. There will be no way to get out of it, as the phone boots for 2/3 seconds max before looping all over again. Even when you go into recovery, same thing, automatically boot loops.
Most people, including the official HTC Service Centre, will tell you the motherboard is fried and needs replacement. Whilst it is possible that may be true, it isn't guaranteed. It's an easy way out for HTC, as they can charge you an extortionate price for a new motherboard and not have to bother going through the work of taking the phone apart to find out what is wrong.
The solution may be much simpler - the Power Flex Cable. This is a very small cable that goes along the top of your phone. WHen water damaged, this cable can become damaged, causing a constant boot loop. The reason being it constantly tells the phone the power button is on, causing a constant on/off cycle. In this instance the motherboard is fine and you can get a replacement Flex Cable for less than £5!
There is an easy way to tell whether the Flex Cable is the likely cause of your looping. When the phone is looping, hold down the down volume button only. Don't touch the power button. If your phone still goes into recovery (then loops again) then it is entirely possible your Flex Cable is damaged, not your motherboard.
Next step, order a Flex Cable (they are easy to find). When it arrives, you will need to open your phone (there are guides on YouTube for this), detach the motherboard and replace the Flex Cable. An advance warning, this isn't easy and you have to be extremely careful. One bad move and your phone is history. The motherboard is delicate. If you look around the internet you will find guides which show how the HTC One X is configured. Note that the Flex Cable is behind the motherboard and quite awkward to get off. I would post a couple of links but as a new member I'm not allowed! PM me and I'm happy to share some helpful links though.
You'll know quickly if this has worked. When connecting your phone it will no longer loop. Let it charge for a little while, then power on and hope for the best. If the Flex Cable was the problem your phone will reboot, and you will be able to use it and get your data off.
Note that water damage can have long lasting effects on a mobile phone. Whilst this may solve the problem for a while, it's entirely possible your phone will fail at some point down the line. Prepare for that and make sure you back up accordingly. The above advice may give you a lifeline in getting data off your phone, though, and being able to use it for a little longer. I know that when I was looking around the net I only found this advice by chance, and I think it was on a non-phone related forum. This advice may exist on the forum somewhere but if so it isn't so easy to find. I hope somebody may come across this topic when trying to fix their water damaged phone and find it is the solution.
Good luck!
Same symptoms, but no water damage
Hey man,
Thanks a ton for your post. I have the same issue, as in it won't stop booting at all. However, mine didn't happen because of water damage, but when I tried to do a factory reset (the phone was only on 5% charge so I'm not sure if that screwed it up). Do you think it could still be solved with a flex cable? I tried holding just the volume button down, and it does go into the bootloader so it seems pretty much exactly like what you have described!
Cheers
My only experience with replacing the flex cable comes from water damage, I'm not sure whether a software fault (as this appears to be) could have any effect on the cable itself!
When you get into the bootloader screen, does it just cycle all the way through to fastboot without allowing you to select any other options before rebooting? If so it would suggest your phone thinks the power button is constantly pushed down, which is suggestive of a power flex cable fault.
These cables are very cheap to buy, so if you aren't able to do anything else with the phone it's definitely worth a shot, even if it doesn't work. Just remember that opening the phone voids your warranty, and be careful if you do attempt it, as the insides of the One X are quite delicate. It would be very easy to break something!

It's very easy to do, the flex cable is a fragile piece. There are quite a few parts inside the HOX which could easily snap, which is why I always urge a lot of caution when opening the phone up!

Good luck!

Thanks. I've already taken the back off and noticed some broken bits of plastic...from the back....but I did notice a bit of ribbon that looked a bit screwed up....I'm gonna take it to the gizmo wizard to fix once I buy a new power flex cable.
Good luck!
Another thing to try

Old thread I know but thought it was worth adding that with a water damaged phone the issues can result from the fact that tap water contains minerals which can leave a conductive residue when it dries - can change resistances, cause shorts etc. What I've done previously is used isopropyl alcohol (tape head cleaning fluid) with a toothbrush on the motherboard. Brought a phone back to life. This removes the mineral deposits and cleans everything. Had to remove the metal covers from the mobo first though. If a phone is basically dead or not working right after water damage then it's worth a go. As de4life says, just need to be super careful on the HOX with all the delicate ribbon cables.
Indeed, the phone should be thoroughly clensed if possible to wipe out any corrosive liquids left behind from the water (especially if it's dropped in an ocean). The effects of corrosion can be very slow and potentially last for months.
M8 please reply to this all the flex cables that I found are 40$+ can you give me a link for one as you stated that would cost 5 pounds
It worked
It worked! I replaced the power flex cable with a spare one on my HTC One X, previously damaged by being sucked by my one year old son - water damage.! It worked!
Many thanks to you man!

Thank you very much for typing this out! My Google Pixel OG (2016), which was made by HTC, experienced the exact same problem. I have just fixed it by replacing the power flex cable like you suggested.

I was surprised to get a notification for this old thread! I'm glad this worked for you. I had no idea HTC used the same design for the original Pixel.

Problem with screen flickering

Hello. I start writes at the beginning of what the problem is. My G3 is very unlucky. Underwent operations 3 exchanges panel (display + touch). After the final exchange of the phone came two days after what appeared screen flickering. Having traced the various forum decided according to the recommendations of users heating the main processor. Not happily operation failed. The phone does not respond to anything. Now I have a chance at a low cost to get a G3 with a broken touch to transplantation motherboard. Only now is the question. Is it really the problem lay in the motherboard whether there is a possibility that the display itself is defective. Sorry for a bad English. Thank you gentlemen for your interest in the subject and I hope that you will help me with this problem. At the end I might add, with the phone still went smoothly in the display white spots. Have a nice day guys!
yes the problem is in the motherboard -- the SOC heat cause that issue
So the change of the motherboard will fix it ?
Okey tommorow or later arived to me brake screen g3 and i swipe motherboard and type there result thanks again for yours interesting this thread.
It's either a:
A) Dying battery
B) Bad screen or not a proper connection
C) Motherboard
I would check the screen and battery first as they were the first tampered with.
Taking the motherboard from another G3 is a good plan. You can also try applying a thermal pad to the back plate.
And for ****s sake, for the 1000th time:
DO NOT PUT YOUR MOTHERBOARD IN THE OVEN.
And expect a repair that is... As a means to try to boot it up for a couple of minutes to backup your data, sure, suit yourself.
If it is the same problem that others describe it is probably the motherboard. I just bought a new one and replaced mine. Like a new phone now. You can read my comment on another thread here for more details.
