Gapps crashing after update RR 8.1 - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

Hoping someone can provide fix. Gapps unresponsive/crashing immediately after auto-update. Standard solutions are a no go(wipe cache/data, dalvik, degrenify, reboot). Have tried everything short of a clean install of system/gapps. No previous issues or crashing. Haven't posted here so my apologies if data is lacking. Let me know what you need. I am running RR 8.1 v6.0.0. Wondering if anyone else has had this issue surface recently.

I'm assuming you don't want to clean install because you have files you want on the device ? If so just boot into TWRP recovery and plug the phone in to PC, pull the files off and clean install.

I am abroad without computer and slow wifi, so was just hoping to avoid clean install as it will be a hassle. Could the fact that I am abroad be a contributing factor? I would guess no, but perhaps you are more knowledgeable. Is there a way to uninstall/reinstall gapps without issue? Have done that in the past and it seems the only way to install gapps is immediately after clean installation, without reboot. Thank you for your response

I'm not sure what would happen of you reinstall gapps, I haven't ever tried without wiping first. Anyone else know ?

The information provided by you is not sufficient. There are some points i would like to know about.
Have u rooted your device?
Are you flashing through ODIN?
ROM version?
Did you make data wipe/ cache wipe before flashing over a previous firmware?
There are many threads associated with this.So please take a look over that.If you don't find answer then we are here to help you

Thanks for Calling me "Sir". But seriously no need to say it. Say it to real developers.
Now coming to the topic,
For your information, keep in mind that when u flash the Official firmware through ODIN, You loose the root access.
Don't restore any backup. Just flash through ODIN. After flashing Wipe Cache and Data wipe is recommended too.
To gain the root access again you need to flash recovery from ODIN.
Other members looking at this this thread please correct me if i am wrong .I still not getting which backup the guy is talking about.

oh sorry sir, i'll make it clear, my last firmware is 4.2.2 and my rom is GENNEXT, but when i encounter the problem, i tried to go back and flash the 4.1.2 stock firmware, then later i discovered that i have a backup from my previous rom(GENNEXT running 4.2.2 firmware) so i flash again the 4.2.2 stock firmware and flash the philz touch recovery, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache then restore the back up, then my phone is restored but theres another problem sometimes the screen blinks and the phone reboots in a few minutes after the startup.

OK. Then it may be the problem with your GENNXT ROM cause the problem occured after restoring Backup.Try the fresh install of latest build of GENNXT rom.

i already tried it sir but it didnt solve the problem, it passes the setup but after a few minutes the phone reboots.
You might want to try one of the AOSP-based ROMs (CM11/Slimkat/Carbon/Omni/ProBAM) and see if it fixes the issue. If it still reboots even after installing one of those ROMs, then you probably has a faulty hardware. If it stops rebooting, then you probably has a corrupted installation of stock firmware...
Faulty hardware = get it to a service center, but be prepared to pay some bucks because you have already lost your warranty...
Corrupted stock firmware = try to flash the firmware again via Odin but DON'T RESTORE ANY BACKUP. If it still reboots, redownload the firmware package and reflash.
I'm not an expert, but I figured that your phone is already unusable by constant rebooting... let's just solve it by trial and error.

This is probably the best explained and most direct definition of what to do and what may be happening with our ever-rebooting Grands.... Thank you!!!
Had to create an account to thanks naufalhadyan
I was running on LineAgeOS 13.0 for a while until yesterday, when I went to install some random play store app and it crashed then went on a infinite rollercoaster with absolutely no fun making loops every time it got of the boot animation, did a factory reset, on the 2nd or 3rd app it crashed and looped, flashed another .zip with the rom, same, installed an RRemix on the same version (I like the 6) and when installing another random playstore it crashed the same way, now i'm on a AOSP 6.0 flashed from the recovery and so far i've been downloading the entire play store (just for kicks) and its smooth.
I don't use come to this troubleshooting section but on the last 24 hours there were some major bugs regarding endless loops, maybe a play store update came bugging our grand duos'? Is that even possible?

Even iam facing the same issue
phone reboots automatically and doesnt even start... infinite bootloop. Was working fine and suddenly this issue came up from nowhere(past 2 weeks) ..
Iam using Resurrection rom 5.7.4 (Marshmallow)
Damn I was on AICP 11, when this exact strange bootloop problem occurred for no rhyme and reason. I know the hardware is fine, the issue arises from installing apps from playstore, the moment it goes beyond a certain app limit in the device, it will start endless bootloop, I am sure this is Google's doing. Anyways this is not a hardware issue and I know more people will be coming here looking for answer to this issue. I have tried both the opengapps and deltagapps, same behaved this way, it never happened before and lately google have introduced one other app which is google's android instant app that will sit in your device, even though you need it not not. very well google for using our precious internal data to around 500Mb to 1Gb.
formating data partition solves this issue, temporarily but you lose your apps and data.
I had successfully avoided this issue when I stopped installing more apps on my device, It took me 2 tries and I found a perfect balance of 4-5 apps, it came crashing again when I tried installing the 7th app.
I don't know if other ROMs will be able to handle this bug, but I know it's time for me to look for another ROM, I was happy with AICP 11, for more than a year. Sad.
Reading about this issue, I came to know this is prevalent on all CM marshmallow based ROMs. So, going to flash Nougat or kitkat or the stock ROM should probably fix this.
Try a new battery.

I don't think it will be as Google haven't released the version with the patch yet as that will be the OTA or factory image versions.

Thank you I'm really excited about it. But I have a question. Can I have use my flash drives in this ROM without stickmount?
ROM
So is this a full-fledged ROM that I can install after wiping any ROM, or do I have to flash back to stock android 4.4.4 and then flash this??
I seem to be unable to install on my Nexus 10. I've followed the stages, but when I get to flashing the AOSP rom it stays on it forever!
I've updated my TWRP to v2.8.1.0 but it does the same thing.
Sorted the problem I think, some how the download I had on my Nexus was not a happy one haha. just on the boot logo now :3
Thank you, booted up and running. One question, I couldn't install Google+. It cannot be found on Play Store and installing from APK doesn't work neither.
Great work, thanks. Flashed about an hour ago, flawless so far!
seems my internal storage is not working ,I am not able to see any storage area, it gives an error. Might be a bad flash.

Is anyone having problems with Wifi? I have flashed this twice and I cannot get Wifi to connect. It sees networks but won't connect to any of them.

Yeah all working now, took forever to boot, went black a few times and then started working.
Now the $64,000 Question: will it root?
because I've had my fun with it. And without root, I can't keep it. I doubt it can be, but I have to hope.
Flashed yesterday. My experience was as follow:
1) Dirty flash from PA, system erase command did t seem to work. After flashing it booted up all apps were there, 4.4 gapps were force closing.
2) Twrp advance factory reset and erase. normal flash afterwards with gapps 5.0. Setup wizard crash. Couldn't get past that error.
3) Factory 4.4 image. Complete erase, and flash to L, boot up and then TWRP and gapps flash. Tablet booted correctly and works since then.
Regarding the WiFi battery drain bug:
No issue here. Battery drain when idle is a flat line. No misc group with excessive battery is listed in the battery stats.
Further more performance is great, basic apps seem to work correctly. Haven't gotten much into detail.
Regarding the G+ question. It works fine.

I'm writing because I found no solution to this or someone to address this. are there not many having this problem?
After 7.0 update my alarm is not ringing and if I go in the settings to change the alarm sound the app fc, also the YouTube app says "something went wrong" when trying to play a video.
After restart the sound is back for some time, then bug repeats.
I activated touch sound so I get a warning when I need to reboot, but the touch sound is not affected, also the music app is working, but no alarm or notification.
Whipped cash, installed Oos 4.0.3 via recovery (stock, locked bl, no root)
Currently on 7.1.1 Oos 4.1.3
Someone please help
Starting to think that I will have to sent the phone back to OnePlus...
get the full 4.1.3 zip, and on stock recovery wipe everything not just cache...
then back to the main menu on recovery and select install via USB (or something liket hat) and sideload the full rom from computer , after sideload boot to system and for good measures do a factory reset.

Thanks for the reply ! - I will try your suggestion tomorrow if I get the time -
Maybe it's a stupid question but: is there ever a need to wipe internal storage? or wipe everything means just system data ?
plus: could the encryption mess things around ?

Encryption may cause issues, but I don't think your problem is related to that, something in the update process went wrong I think so you got something corrupted on the either the system.or data partition , so Everytime you install a new ROM it does but the issue stays, the only way to know for sure is a clean install, and the easiest way to that is what I told you, it can also be done by fastboot where you wipe everything with fastboot then sideload , but to be safe better stick with the recovery method... I don't thing internal storage could cause an issue, but I personally from 7.0 to 7.1.1 I did wipe it , better safe than sorry, and it elemenates any possibilities so if you can do that it's better

I am unable to make any ROM, TWRP stick.

I have FB factory, flashed ROM's and nothing is sticking. Might be corrupt storage. I was wondering if there is a more thorough way to wipe/flash the phone so I can make a ROM/OS stick?
Have you tried a factory image with the -w as in wipe everything?

Fastboot format system, fastboot erase userdata, fastboot format cache. There was a guide somewhere someone had about clean flashing. I had an issue once but after totally wiping and a clean install of stock, I haven't had any issues since. Use the flash-all.exe to flash, idk if you flash your images separately, but flashing the zip as a whole through fastboot yielded better results for me. Also being sure that my adb.exe files were up to par. Also be sure to wipe both slots, as it might be slot b giving you problems. Google search should find you the right fastboot commands, I've forgot them off the top of my head. Of course if you're going to wipe you would need to back everything you need up.

Yes, my SDK is up to date, from Google site. Interesting about flash-all.exe.
Fastboot format system
fastboot erase userdata
fastboot format cache
These were the commands you have used?
Anyone have beta how to wipe both a and b??
Does anyone want to link me to clean flashing?

OK folks. I want to apologize for my flooding of the forums attempting to repair my situation last week. Yes, I have been flashing for a long time without real complications. I haven't been on my ADHD meds for a while and that did not help me with the drama last week. Unfortunately my world like most of you is in my phone, I was panicked. Sorry about that.
Needless to say I needed other eyes on what I was doing for perspective sake. I went to my PC tech, luckily had personal flashing experiences with Android, Pixel even. We worked on it for about 6 hours in total. He couldn't get RR to work.
The issue was this after following the OP instructions. Once in the system I couldn't get the WiFi to connect with the phone, not being able to download whatever the phone was looking for. Google play services kept FC'ing. Google TTS kept FC'ing as well. I don't know if there is a fix or a forthcoming fix for this abnormal issue. I deleted data from the apps that were FC'ing and other Google that might be related. PS: not a RR issue I had this same issue with Benzo)
Unfortunately, we didn't save anything from the old RR setup because I couldn't be without a phone for another day. Any constructive thoughts would be welcomed.
I shall attempt to reinstall RR at some point to see if it works, or to get data to help the devs understand what might have happened or might had happened.
I am back on stock, not loving it that is for sure.

I wish I could say the wrong GAPPS, the version from the OP was used (others had issues as well), TWRP 3.2.0 again from the OP was installed per instructions. They were not. Not letting system boot up might have been the bigger issue. I shall never know.

Bluetooth problem after flashing TWRP

Hi,
I flashed TWRP on my unlocked Redmi Note 8T with MIUI Global 12.5.5. Everything was great until I rebooted it and saw Bluetooth error which pops every time I try to turn Bluetooth on or just randomly during usage of the device. I also tried to re-flas TWRP with Orange fox but it unfortunatelly did not help. Now I have no idea what to do but there are also some other people with this problem (for example:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Xiaomi/comments/y9zsak
).
Does anybody know any solution? Thanks!
Btw Orange fox is for ginko devices, I did not find version for willow
I had the exact same problem when I tried to root my stock rom in ginkgo. I was getting a lot of "app keeps stopping" pop ups, and that also included bt. My bt was completely broken until I changed rom. Also I'm guessing this had happened when I had rooted my phone with magisk, not by flashing recovery itself. Perhaps you could try to uninstall magsik, and see it it resolves the issue for you. If that would be the case, then you would have found your problem, and maybe you can flash a custom rom to safely root your phone.
Thanks for reply, but i did not have magisk flashed on my phone. I only had installed the app, prepared apk file and did nothing in TWRP (Orange fox) , just flashed a recovery with my PC, checked that it is working and rebooted device. Anyway I tried to do it only because of acces to NFC and Gpay which is now blocked.
As you also said, I would like to try custom rom (like LineageOS) because it seems like bad idea to have a stock room on an unlocked phone. Only the problem is how to backup data like data from apps, games etc.
So now it tried one of my ideas, which was to install Magisk (root) and uninstall it but it also did not help (I expected that)

To backup data simply copy your personal files in pc or sdcard. And to backup data in apps, take back-up of only those apps and where you need to backup. Don't take a complete backup using some app. That consumes a lot of space and make the newly rom feel "not so new". Most apps don't require you to take back-up offline these days. I usually backup only my personal files before flashing rom.
Yeah, that's true. But don't you know how to backup data from these "offline" apps? I was trying to solve this also before unpocking bootloader like a year ago but unsuccessfuly.
Also, which rom should I choose? I'm deciding between LineageOS and Pixel experience.
So I have LOS installed but I can´t install other zip files (like Google apps). Im only getting error: signature verification failed while. Im using LOS recovery so where is the problem?
Solved it!
Hey @vasik006 ! I know this is very late and you might have found the solution yourself, but I found the solution to this problem. Since yesterday I was trying to root my ginkgo with twrp, using magisk delta and had exact same issue. Joyose and bluetooth keeps stopping, and don't work. Simply factory reset ( I also formatted data) in twrp, and in next boot bluetooth should work. Then you can simply install the magisk apk and let it do its thing. No need to flash again since it has already made changes to boot file that can't be overriden by resetting phone.
Thanks, this might help someone else with this problem. I have already formatted my phone, installed Lineage OS and everything is ok
For me, the problem with BT and Joyose occurs only with TWRP v3.7.x. I went back to TWRP v3.6.1_9-0 but now backups are not working.

I have the same problem with the Redmi note 8. Did you unroot first or did the factory reset directly? Tks

TWRP is invaluable for backing up the system before making changes like theming etc. and I can take a TWRP backup to any of my (all the same) devices and restore the whole thing in just a few minutes. So convenient! I really couldn't imagine life without TWRP. TWRP enables me to clone my device in case of hardware failure. All my settings and all my apps and all my custom configurations which would otherwise take hours/days to setup - BAM! Presto! on the new device and running perfectly.
TWRP + NeoBackup are essential. TWRP as described, and NeoBackup to roll back breaking updates to apps when devs butcher them, break them, and/or just remove really useful features. I also disconnect apps that get ruined by an update from the Play Store so they don't keep coming up when I check for updates.

I would advise you to read the posts again. They were asking about how to take backup of "personal apps" which twrp can't do, and if they are changing ROM then twrp backup won't be of any use to them. Therefore, whatever you're trying to tell here doesn't really help the discussion.

TWRP does backup personal apps and their settings. Once you restore a TWRP backup, you have everything back except media files - images, videos, documents, etc. The launcher icons, the apps, the system settings - everything is a perfect clone which you can restore on a new device (same model, of course).
I actually came across this thread searching to see if others had a problem where merely flashing TWRP caused Bluetooth to crash (and Atmos).
Use OrangeFox
is there anyone use BT-fix-for-PE-20190618.zip to fix this problem ?
I'm on an ROG Phone II with the same issue.
The "fix" is to wipe in TWRP and install Magisk BEFORE you leave for your first boot and NEVER come back to TWRP as the issue will return the second recovery is booted.

From what I can tell, this is correct. 3.6_XX-X allows me to come and go from TWRP as much as I please without incurring the bug, however, I haven't tested backup though I can't see a reason why they wouldn't work.
Are these existing backups that aren't working or the whole backup function in general?

It seems to be a twrp issue. What version do you have? And what version of magisk do you have?
I have recently flashed miui 12 (android 10) after bricking the phone using qtel. I noticed the Bluetooth problem last week and didn't find a fix. I have twrp 3.6.2 and magisk 25.1. I had twrp 3.7.1 but if failed to decrypt data using pattern so I rolled back to 3.6.2. And I thought that magisk had to do with the Bluetooth problem so I rolled back to 25.1 from 26.
I still can't use the Bluetooth, and I don't have time to reset the phone, I just finished restoring everything
I CAN CONFIRM
go back to the previous twrp 3.6.2 version + wipe factory reset or simply format data solve sucesfuly solve installation issue of Magisk 26.1 or Magisk Delta 25210

I can't afford resetting my phone right now , don't have enough time. I'll let it like that for some months.
Edit : I have miui 12.0.6 installed (android 10) and I'm not planning to upgrade since I have much better battery life (even better than every mod I tried). I wander if I flash miui rom from recovery can fix it?
Edit 2: flashing the rom from recovery didn't fix it
