Is it possible to use a Fire TV in portrait mode - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the title says, is it possible to configure the Fire TV to run in portrait mode?
I've tried some apps that say they can force rotation, but when activated, seems to change the rotation for about 1 second, then it switches back with the display stretched/distorted until the rotation is reset.
I'd prefer a solution that does not require root. Thanks.

Yes use this app - it will be stretched/distorted on landscape layout but if you run an app that is only running in portrait it should display alright

Thanks for the reply. I tried that app, but it does not seem to have the desired effect.
The application I am using supports landscape and portrait mode, but I want to use it in portrait mode exclusively. When using that application it seems to run the app in landscape mode but force the aspect ratio to look like portrait.
For example, I actually plan on rotating my TV 90 degrees and using it that way.

Does your TV have an accelerometer? I've never seen one that did. Not to say they aren't out there, but I'm betting that's the issue.

No accelerometer. I'm just going to mount it sideways.

Without one your TV won't know that you rotated it.

I do not believe this is the case. Even if the TV had an accelerometer it would have no way to tel the FIre TV about the rotation. There are many Android devices that let you specify the rotation without an accelerometer. Its just a setting in the OS.
Since the intended use case of the Amazon Fire TV is to watch movies, they did not include this as a user-configurable option. But it is definitely possible. For example, if I edited build.prop and set ro.sf.hwrotation=180 it would work. But I would like to find a non-root solution.

Any success?

Nope. I ended up editing the apps I needed to transpose their views 90 degrees.

I need something to mirror my phone screen (in portrait) to the screen that is also rotated 90 degrees to be portrait. Do you have any idea how to manipulate it sonce this does not work?

Is there any info on how you did the app editing? I'm in the same boat.

same issue, I'd really like to just rotate everything by 90° (just need prime video and plex)

Gameboy emulators blurry

For years I have enjoyed Gameboid and GBCoid on various android phones running various stock and custom softwares. I recently upgraded to the Galaxy Nexus and to my surprise, these applications had a blurry effect in portrait mode. When switching over to landscape mode they look fine and for a split second before the screen transition they also look fine, but put them upright again and they quickly blur back over. I tried adjusting the scaling/stretching option in the video settings of the applications to no avail. I uninstalled and reinstalled both the same files and different versions of the apps also not fixing the problem. I checked and unchecked the Force GPU Rendering option which had no effect. I am at a loss and would appreciate any help
GBCoid probably just needs updating, the last time it was updated was over a year ago. If you play in landscape it's not blurry.
i can confirm i use myboy and in landscape runs perfect but portrait is blurry just turn it sideways and u shouldnt have a problem
If anyone is curious, I loaded GBCoid on my Nexus 7 and portrait mode works fine and isn't blurry. So I have no idea what could be going on. Anybody have any ideas?

Screen rotation glitch?

Hey guys, I was wondering if you guys are having this issue as well? I tested 2x Note 2's and they both do this. The problem i'm having is whenever I rotate the device while viewing a video, screen brightness/contrast/gamma (i really don't know which?) goes up momentarily and goes back to normal again. It doesn't do this on stock video player but for example YouTube or MX Player does this. As for YouTube, go to play store and play any app demo videos because if you actually go to YouTube app when you rotate the device video will rotate as well and it's hard to see this problem.
Update: as for MX Player, this problem stopped when I put screen orientation to "landscape", by default it was on auto rotation (landscape). I think Note 2's system auto-rotation is conflicting with app's rotation?? Not a huge issue but gets really annoying I hope I didn't get 2x defective note2s....
Do you have smart rotation enabled?

Oh man... Thanks man, Yep that was the cause of this issue.... I turned off auto-rotation, I didn't think smart rotation would be still active.
All these good features causes at least one issues, what the heck... Smart rotation off, ripple effect off... I wonder what's next, hopefully nothing too major! :/

Thank you too!
I didn't even notice the issue with the ripple effect until you mentioned it, hehe.

[Q] Video taken with stock camera (last version) saved an upside down video

Well, I have read stuff about the Nexus 5x saving upside down images/vids with 3rd party apps that didn't use API correctly, but today I saved a video, which looks OK on the device, but when I send it to the PC.. it is upside down.
Is this common? it has any fix? can I fix the vid somehow?
If this happens to the stock camera... what the **** Google..
I've read somewhere that it's normal, the sensor it's upside-down so it puts a flags for apps to turn it around.. the problem is that I tested any program on Windows (Media Player Classic - Home Cinema, VLC, WMP, etc..) and ALL of them show the video upside-down...

Hmm, I downloaded the last version from hpc hc yesterday and it was still upside down. What is that madvr render stuff? Some sort of plugin? This is interesting because if this works im keeping the n5x, if not im returning it (because I want the video reproduced well on pc)
Thanks!
No special settings. Just set madVR as default renderer and launch video by double-click. At least it working in my rig with external GPU. Here is also the feature request in mpc hc trac: https://trac.mpc-hc.org/ticket/2202.
How has google/LG not come up with a better fix for this? Two of my apps that use the camera (Stampt and Chase Mobile Banking) show the video upside down. It is extremely annoying. I realize that the app *should* be updated to the latest API, but if you make upside down hardware YOU should be the one to fix it, not force everyone else to conform.

Works! Thanks a lot!!!! Too bad madVR lags some the video reproduction (specially when returning from full screen) , I don't know why I have to move to such thing just for this device. I hope MPC-HC adopts it soon!!

Google. They didn't even use the API how they say on most of their apps. Google is the enemy of nexus lately.
Another option in MPC (Media Player Classic - Home Cinema) besides MadVR is to rotate the video while playing. Use the following the shortcuts (alt + numpad 3) twice to rotate to 180 degrees as shown in my attached image.
I know it's a pain but this is a workaround for now at least. Along with MadVR.

Netflix zoom?

Hi all! Just got my G7 yesterday and I'm loving it so far. The issue I've noticed is when using Netflix. When ever I'm watching a film or other 21:9 content there are black bars surrounding the whole video, it looks so stupid and is essentially wasting screen real estate. Is there anyway to get the video to take up the whole screen like with 16:9 content? Thanks in advance!
Here is what you need to do:
1. Open Settings
2. Select Display
3. Open App Scaling
From within this you can select the app of your choice from the installed apps on your phone and change the amount of real estate on your screen the app uses.
Your choices are
1. None (Original)
2. Compatibility (16:9)
3. Standard (16.7:9)
4. Full Screen (this is what I use for Netflix)
Hope this helped

Have you try other videos content on Netflix? I notice before some video got cropped and some don't. Usually video should automatically do full screen.
You can pinch out the video while watching with your fingers.

Thanks for the tip Roger! Unfortunately it's still the same TV shows fill the full screen but movies don't, it leaves them in black filled letterbox.

I sure have! Like I said to Roger above TV shows zoom and crop just fine but movies won't, even pinch to zoom has no effect when a movie is being displayed looks so stupid.

Netflix doesn't show for me in App Scaling. Was it updated for the G7 compatibility? Can you add any installed app to the app scaling list?

App scale is for app itself, not video content. This phone arrived tomorrow and I'll see if this problem happen in my end.
Have you try Netflix support? They might need to push update on their side for G7 size.

Has YouTube HDR Stopped Working for You? (Pixel 2 XL)

Hi,
YouTube HDR has just stopped working for me. I can still select the resolution + HDR for a compatible video, but the brightness no longer automatically jumps to maximum to cater for the larger dynamic range. It was working right up until yesterday, and doesn't seem to correspond with a YouTube update, either. It's like Android isn't detected the HDR source even though it's selected, and so HDR videos are flat and lifeless.
Has this happened to anybody else?

Using the no root youtube vanced app from here on XDA this isn't an issue if suggest migrating to it yourself just so you don't have ads if nothing else it and there is a black themed one if you're interested in slight battery savings

Press the 3 dots and when you press on resolution you should have a hdr option near the bottom of the list if it's a hdr video

I think it's important to note that although HDR may be selected (like in my case), it may not necessarily work. You'll know if it's worked for sure when the screen brightness automatically sets to maximum. Now, bright parts of the video such as lights will stand out more in contrast to the dark sections, adding overall realism to the picture. I personally think it's great, and can't wait to get an HDR OLED TV.
