Will Dex work without the Samsung Keyboard? - Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 Questions & Answers

I have the keyboard cover but not happy with all aspects. Will Dex work with a Bluetooth keyboard if the Tab S4 is in portrait mode?
Of is Dex something that only works with the Samsung keyboard?
Thanks
4Nails

It should work with Bluetooth keyboard as well as without a keyboard, but Dex has landscape mode only.

`I finally used dex for the first time today.... after many days. The experience was better than I thought.. but at the same time i didnt buy this tab for dex experience. BUT now that I tried it, I love how 3 windows openned looks for multitasking. I used the keyboard case, when I was done I couldn't find too easy how to turn off Dex lol so I disconnected the keyboard to find Dex still goes on without the keyboard.
What I found new for me is that most apps are not ready for Dex.. which means 2 things:
You won't be able to resize those apps on the screen in any way shape or form... only a rotation which is kinda weird. and.. you won't be able to full screen those apps either. but since the display is so awesome, those small windows of a couple apps side to side look great.

How about the DeX lab setting? Supposedly that can force more apps to be resizable?

Holly crap! I didn't know abouut that setting yet. Thanks man. I tested it and the LABS setting works great. Note that its kind of confusing at first when you apply the setting because when you go to resize the app it says RESTART THE APP... so I did, for example facebook, but then it doesn't work!! So then I figured out you have to restart all of DEX first before LAB setting goes into effect. Now the apps I needed to resize ... does so great. I can't believe I can have 4 columes or more to multitask now! I stand corrected on that one! cheers

IDEA - Overlay keyboard?

Just had an idea for a good keyboard design.
The keyboard would be a full landscape keyboard. Full screen but transparent. Eg you can still see the application behind it. Pretty sure the device can support this.
Who's game to try pulling something together?
I like the sound of this, something i also thought would be neat of but never got around to suggesting!

I suggested the same thing a month ago, and was told by very learned people on XDA that Windows Mobile does not support transparent Windows.

SwipePad APP alternative

Does anyone know of another APP like Swipe Pad. It's a good APP but it lags a lot when i open an APP.

Thanks. I tried that re-launcher APP and it works flawlessly. The only issue i have is that you can't remove categories and APP's so it kind makes it overwhelming.

I have tried a bunch of them, and I always end up coming back to swipepad. Don't even remember the names of the apps I tried but they were a bunch of them

Wave launcher didn't want to install for some reason. It keeps FC. But I found this APP that's almost like swipe pad without there lag.

I've loved swipepad but always hated the lag since I had an sgs2 and even when it became faster on my modern phones. This is fast, thanks and I can use both apps.
Although there are a bunch of these, there's nothing quite like SwipePad. I've tried to switch many times and I end up back with SwipePad like an old girlfriend. The only thing is, SwipePad doesn't seem to get updated very much. It took ages for the Lollipop update, and soon after it was done, Marshmallow came along. The context panel no longer works and blacklist also fails to work. It's a tad less responsive to the point that sometimes when you select an app to open, it misses. You have to linger maybe 200 milliseconds. Those things are annoying but even with those annoyances, it's still the best out there by quite a bit. I have two "pads", each with 12 functions. Twenty-four functions is quite enough for me when they are easy to get at and it doesn't require me to switch from Nova Launcher.

I recently updated my tablet from Kitkat to Marshmallow and realize that "Dynamic Pads: SwipePad add-on" doesn't work as Context Panel. From other reviews in Play Store I get feedback that this problem started a long time ago in Lollipop. Context is shown not for active app, but for active Launcher.
I overcome this problem yourself easily because I have rooted device, I moved "SwipePad Dynamic Pads" app from user apps to system apps. Now it works again as it should. Probably some app's permission restriction in LP/MM...
I know this post is old, however I found it with Google Search.
You can give my app a try, I believe it's the closest thing to SwipPad and even taking the idea further to a new level (keep an eye on the coming updates)

auto rotate the home screen in 4.2

Hello all,
I was able to add a line to the build.prop of 4.1.2 and have my home screen auto rotate on my Galaxy nexus. The line added was:
launcher.force_enable_rotation=true
With 4.2 I have this line in my build.prop and the screen does not rotate. Perhaps they changed the command? Any help would be appreciated.
None of the gurus know?
Well since I was not able to find the command to make this work, I just installed 'Ultimate Rotation Control' app, and it does the trick..
Ultimate Rotation Control App
Hope this helps others.
It even does the lock screen!
I'd still like to know the build.prop edit for 4.2. Guess I'll try the app for the trial period, at least.
EDIT: Yep, I like this better. Definitely appears to be worth $3.

Indeed I am still trying to find the build.prop edit also. But yes this app does the trick nicely and I dont mind spending the money on it at all
*EDIT
I had tried to open the 4.2 nexus 7 OS but it is not laid out the same way as the phones. It unzips into several .img files. I have tried to mount those in both windows and linux and I have had no luck.. But I suspect the command in there would be ideal.

HOW TO: Increase Effective Resolution/Adjust PPI of your Note 2

Hey everybody
One of the most useful mods I have performed on my Note 2 is a PPI adjustment, which effectively increases the resolution of the screen. I'm not sure why this isn't more commonly discussed, because I think it really takes advantage of the phone's size and tablet-like qualities (especially with the new MultiView update, if that appeals to you). I know many users of the original Note did this mod, which is how I found out about it. I suspect that many other Note 2 users may not be aware of this trick...
WHAT IT DOES
It has the same effect as increasing one's monitor resolution - more content is able to be displayed on screen. If all the icons, text, menus, etc on your Note 2 just seem really BIG to you, this is the antidote.
Look at the two before and after screenshots attached. I would have posted them in line, but as a new user I am prohibited from doing so.
REQUIREMENTS
ROOTED Note 2 - there are other Howto's on XDA that cover this
ROM Toolbox Pro (other apps may work too, possibly including the free version of ROM Toolbox, but this is what I used)
HOW TO DO IT
Root your phone and install ROM Toolbox Pro. Go to the performance tab, and click "build.prop" editor. There will be two entries called "ro.sf.lcd_density"
Within each one, change the property value and the default value to 240. That's four numbers you're replacing. On the last change, go ahead and reboot. Done!
OTHER NOTES
With the original Note, it was common for this mod to break the Market. This is no longer the case. But, there are a few things that break to varying degrees. They're easy to fix though...
TouchWiz: The default launcher will not adapt to the new settings, and you will have a lot of blank space. Fix by installing another launcher. I use Nova.
The Clock app breaks completely. I replaced with Alarm Clock Plus.
The dialer, like TouchWiz, will remain small. You could replace with a custom dialer, but I actually left it as-is because a side effect is that it's really easy to use with one hand.
The Camera app has the same problem. Camera Zoom FX makes a good replacement.
the Samsung keyboard breaks, thus taking down handwriting input with it. Swype works fine, as does s-note.
Aside from those minor issues, everything has worked fine, including all the 3rd party apps I have.
Hope this is helpful to some of you guys.
Seriously, this phone is amazing at 240

This is great. One other app is the email app only takes half the screen on portrait. Really need to figure out how to install the AOSP JB Email app on here....
Another benefit is Swiftkey Tablet keyboard now does the split keyboard on landscape which is easier to type on.
The only problem is that you can't use the handwriting mode with the stylus with the ppi set to 240 because the Samsung keyboard keeps fc'ing. That's my only complaint so far with this phone is that the handwriting mode is tied to the Samsung keyboard.

I had problems with apps saying they weren't compatible with my device... cleared data in the market app... still no dice. Any insight?

I'm not real fond of the way the dialer looks so I'm using Go Contacts which has a pretty good dialer.

The market is probably filtering since at this resolution it is probably now considered an x-large device.
Really like this resolution, will need to use for a while to see which apps decide to crap out.
you can also edit the build.prop with root explorer. If you edit the it to be =160 it switched to tablet mode, but crashes a lot
=170 i think its still tablet and doesn't crash

To be honest, with jelly bean letting us choose "tiny" text now and the screen size being so big, I'm not as inclined to change the Res on this thing anymore... in the past with my S2 that was the first thing i would do whenever I flashed a new rom.

installed, set to 170, put on nova launcher, and downloaded a jellybean keyboard. so far so good, but how do I get the "hold home to bring up all running apps back" feature? It looks like Nova doesn't support this...

Technically the Galaxy Note II does have a higher screen res than the Galaxy S III since the Note 2 does not have a pentile display. Paranoid Android in the future will also let you completely customize the size of everything on your phone without messing up the market due to DPI issues.

Do you think PA will come to this phone? If so, it will be a great addition and will fit this device perfectly.

anyone with issues sending MMS? I had taken a pic and tried to send MMS but got a unsupported file type or something like that and wont attach the picture. reverting back to 320dpi works.
hopefully the samsung keyboard will work with this in the future, it looks sooo much better with the dpi change .. specially with multi-view (although the menu and border of it doesnt stretch all the way across the screen).
bala gamer is hopefully going to take a shot at FIXING the bits that don't work right at 240dpi !! I especially hope he can fix the keyboard as I LOVE the keyboard.
for the multi window just drag the menu to the TOP OR BOTTOM edge and it displays correctly at 240dpi (the separator is not wide enough but thats not an issue)
Zoom FX is no good since it uses "smaller" images (really small) in burst mode NOT 8mp. I found that out the hard way after I shot some really nice shots and later discovered the res was so small it was useless to me

Disable FullScreen Keyboard (NO ROOT)

Hi,
I would like to suggest to our moderators or to our app developers if they can tweak the Xperia Keyboard or Google Keyboard to disable the fullscreen feature whenever you are on landscape mode (like playing games, watching movies etc.).
The reason for this request is the fullscreen mode on landscape is quite annoying since it covers the entire screen.
Actually, I found a good solution for this but by using an Xposed module. However, I don't want to root my phone since I just bought it a month ago. I hope someone can help me do this without the need of rooting the phone. Command via ADB shell will do as well if there's a certain command for that.
I'm using Huawei P10 VTR-L29C636B162
Thanks!
Hi,
I don't have anything issue like that with Gboard. Can you post a screenshot for better understanding, what you exactly mean?
And we also need your phone model and firmware version.
I'm on VTR-L29C432B162.
As per your screenshot and with the attached image below, you will see that our keyboard on landscape mode covers the entire screen and this is not helpful when playing games, (like mobile legends). But, if our keyboard has an option to disable fullscreen on landscape, the background will still be visible.
The image that I have attached is screengrabbed from Playstore from the Xposed App/Module called 'Disable Fullscreen Keyboard'. It only mean that this can be done if our phone is rooted. But, my request is if we can also do this even our phone is not rooted and no need to install Xposed app or modules.
I hope our mods can modify Google Keyboard, Swift Keyboard, Swype Keyboard, Xperia Keyboard(ported) disabling the fullscreen feature of the keyboards.
I hope I made it clear.
Up. I hope someone can fix this.
yeah this feature is so annoying, full screen in landscape mode were disabled when i was on kitkat. now its back again on gboard 2017 for nougat and beyond. at least on certain apps or games only
It would be interesting if it's even possible with root...this is so annoying. I switched from iOS and thought Android is a bit further but after more than a year on Huawei I have to say, that many things are far behind a jailbroken iOS.

It is available rooted by the looks as bauer said above.
It drives me mad too. If I'm watching Netflix or something and someone messages I have to guess and hope that what I've written is correct or I have to go back out, write message, go back in, find the movie and start again, quite annoying.
Had email back again saying I should be getting my BL unlock code soon so hopefully this app still works.

This is possible with xposed module called "Disable Fullscreen Keyboard". But Xposed requires Root. So far no way doing this without root access.
