Disable it and manually change when needed, while waiting for an update that fix this.

No, I never use auto brightness feature, I must decide the brightness level, and I don't like when it changes before my eyes.
this phone has same bad auto brightness like my other xiaomi phone(5 plus) but I must learn to live with that and I must time to time adjust brightness manualy

I have a problem that I can't really figure out, so I hope you guys can help me out.
I have a Galaxy Nexus which I'm very happy with (GSM btw). I had one problem though and that was that I didn't like the auto-brightness. The brightness was often too low so I searched for an alternative. I found one in Lux and it worked great.
Lux is a brightness control app and you can basically customize your auto brightness to your liking.
After a while though it stopped working and I now I can't change the brightness with lux anymore. It doesn't matter if I set lux to 30% or 100%, the brightness stays the same. I do suspect that the brightness it does stay is the brightness currently set in the system settings.
After this problem I started test other apps that can control brightness and I noticed the same problem. I still can't control my brightness.
I do have to say though, there are a few occasions where I actually can change the brightness, but those moments are totally random and are that rare that the app is still unusable.
Oh and one more thing; Lux has a feature called 'sub-zero' where the app sets the brightness even lower than is possible with the system settings and that feature does always work.
Anyone have an idea what the problem could be or how I can figure out what the problem is? I think one possibility is another 3rd party app interfering with the brightness, but I can't figure out what app. Is there any way to easily check all the apps that use the 'brightness change' permissions?
Edit: I'm stock running Android 4.0.4 and not rooted.
Are you stock?

If you mean it's the problem of the app, then no, it's probably not, because other third party apps have the exact same issues.
If you mean it's the problem of ONE of my apps, then yes, it's possible, but I have no idea how to figure out which app. I don't want to do a factory reset, neither do I want to uninstall and install every app I have just to see if it makes any difference (I have more than hundred apps).
If you meant the latter; do you know any way to check out which app could cause these issues? Maybe another app which shows me all apps that uses the brightness control permissions?
Hi,
My OP5T has a very aggressive brightness levels..
Whenever I increase the slider to 40%, it will revert back to 10%..
This was not happening earlier OP3...
Is this because of Nougat?
Are there anybody else who is experiencing the same problem...
Can it be improved
Thanks,
Shyam

I have terrible auto brightness too. Don't know the reason but it's not a hardware issue, thankfully.
I've been using velis auto brightness for a few days and I like it quite a bit. Getting 6 hours screen on time with a minimum brightness of 30%.
Using Lux here. The stock auto brightness is useless really.

Lux made my camera stop working, front and back. I wish the dev would come back and update his app. It's far and away the best auto brightness app there is AINEC.
Apparently the app itself will stop working alltogether on Oreo.

Thanks a lot, man. Velis is very helpful. Hope developers will fix this problem soon.
Is it me or Adaptive Brightness doesn't seem to be working really well? I could have my phone under full light and then i'll go into total darkness and the display will stay at maximum brightness.
Got a screen protector on? Maybe it's blocking the sensor, mine seems to be working

I do not have one on.
I haven't experienced this.
Yes auto brightness is flaky . Needs a patch . For all I know , it could be the auto start manager interfering ... not sure

Yeah not working at all. Serious glitch on Zenfone 5z
I thinking about getting this phone but have a question about the auto brightness feature.
If anyone has used the oneplus 7 pro they should know that the auto brightness on the phone sucks and its annoying to have to manually adjust almost every time.
Does this phone have a ambient light sensor that works correctly? Does the auto brightness work like previous notes? Thanks
Yes, it works at least better than my note 8, it learns about your preferences over time, and does it really fine
You can disable it, I do.
It's perfect on this phone really.
Most of the time the brightness is spot on. But I had some occasions when in a dark room the brightness was too high and I had to manually decrease it also sometimes when I put the phone in my car mount (wireless charger and it's sunny outside) and open maps the brightness stay too low and I again have to adjust it manually. It could be something that only me experience but I still haven't found the reason it happens.
Sometime it's a bit slow to auto adjust the brightness but it's working fine overall.
Thanks guys. Bought it and so far it works just like the old Samsung phones I've had. So far so good. Funny how the smallest issues bug you so much that you change the phone. Lol

Best solution. Saves the battery and headaches.
Been running manual for 6 months, no regrets.
I hate it when I'm playing a game and the brightness goes down... I'll try to leave it on manual

Use Bixby Routine for it to keep it a the preferred level, or to disable it completely
while gaming.

Are you sure Adaptive brightness is turned off ? if not go search brightness in the settings then turn off adaptive brightness.
Also is it worth upgrading to Android 10, performance wise ? cause I'm using pie but I'm scared that my phone might lag on games with android 10
Yes, Adaptive brightness is turned off
Where can I download Android 9 official rom?
I don't want a root image
