Alternative to Google Assistant news feed? - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

I'm over the artificial intelligence of the news feed in Google Assistant or search. It gives me the same five stories from three different sources and I go to delete some of the sources to never show again and poof they reappear.
Are there any awesome alternatives for general news that are neutral between Fox News or HuffPost?

I have noticed the occasional duplicate in my reading through the news feed, but my interests are varied enough that it doesn't happen to an annoying degree. With the AI, the more information you give it about your interests and your hobbies, the more it has to work with. For example, in my case Google knows my favorite teams and always throws up the scorecards. It knows I like geek things like role playing and science-fiction. It knows I'm into technology. All of this information I gave it - of my own free will - because I simply do not care what Google chooses to do with it.
To actually answer your question, if you want a balanced alternative for general news, you want to look outside the country. I personally get my news from Canada, via the CBC website. Unfortunately, that doesn't show up on the feed.

I have also come to the conclusion that it is not possible to "train" the Google News feed. No matter how many hundreds of inputs you provide, there is a never ending stream of the same articles or like-minded sources. Try using Feedly. I use it on my PC, tablet and phone. You have a lot more control by choosing only the feeds you want to see and there are tons of choices. There is an initial time investment to browse through all the feeds and get things set up, (you have to opt in to everything you want to see) but then maintenance is effortless. I found it easier to do the initial setup on PC, and then use the app on my phone to view. I've got enough feeds where I usually cannot get to everything. Feedly is one of the better newsreaders out there and I have always been happy with the free version.

News - mark all as read

Hey, I can't figure this out!
How can I mark more than one article read?
I've been grappling with this, too.
I don't think it can be done, bizarrely! I think it's the only RSS reader I've ever used that lacks this function.
I really like the widget for the HTC news app - looks better than anything else out there which is the only reason I've stuck with it so far...
What I've been doing it simply going into the top article, then repeatedly hitting the down button to pass through the remaining articles, which subsequently marks them as read - not ideal (especially when there are a lot of articles) but it kind of works.
What is also irritating is that each feed still displays the number of articles in brackets at the end even when read, whilst the "News" tab right at the bottom will have a green circle with the number of un-read available. You don't necessarily know which feed they're in.
I've been playing with BlueRss which seems to work well but unfortunately lacks a widget that is as nice to use as the HTC News app.
Anyone else with any ideas?
Thanks, too bad...
Anyone else have any ideas?
I just searched the forum looking for an answer to this very question, I guess it cant be done?
Unfortunately I haven't found a way. Such a shame, since the rest of the interface is nice - its widget is the best one I've used. Aside from the fact that the only way to import your Reader feeds is to export an OPML file from Reader, copy to the phone and import it's quite a nice program.
I'm flitting between BlueRSS the mobile version of Google Reader and NewsRob at the mo.
BlueRSS really is very nice to use - it's fast and nicely laid out and uses the Android browser automatically for full webpage article views but doesn't offer full offline browsing of the full HTML article (I don't think) - plus it doesn't sync with Google Reader Its other downside is the fact that its widget is extremely poor.
Google Reader Mobile is quite nice, and obviously uses the Android browser for everything, although i don't think there is any offline capability at all, so it becomes quite useless when away from an Internet connection.
I've tried NewsRob since it gets so much praise, and I really like the Reader-sync and offline browsing, and I'm leaning towards it being the best of the bunch so far, but the one thing that stops me from giving it total praise is the fact that it uses its own (quite frankly ****e) browser for navigating the basic articles rather than passing it to the excellent Android one automatically - you can choose to do this per article so that's not really a major problem, but it would be nice to have some multitouch support and do away with the poor zooming. If they offered this as an option, it would be great. It also has no widget to speak of

Why are we being tracked on Here ???

Were any of you aware your being tracked on here
If you install
http://download.cnet.com/8301-2007_...ack-plus-add-on-stops-the-tracking-paparazzi/
It then shows that
Four Companies are tracking what we do
AdNexus
Google Analytics (Ummmm strange name a bit Anal) if you ask me
Netshelter
Google adsence
These are Via Google Chrome
On IE there are 13 one being the Doubleclick
Nextaction
and quancast
So use Chrome seems safer on here the IE i have not tested Firefox
Guys come on what's going on
Why is this going on ?? and on here as well
Browsers/companies have been tracking your browsing habits for ages now. This isn't something new at all.
I have noticed it varies on sites but this is bad
Android centrol has just one but this has 13 in IE
i no they have been tracking and this prog stops them
But still not impressed at information being taken with out me knowing
And then we also have those vigilink redirects that pollute the outgoing links here on xda. They even use a script to hide the vigilink URL from your browser status bar. That script borders on malware.
Google An is to track how much people are on.
Google Ad is the ads on this site
AdNextus is also ads
And the other one you have you find out by your self.
These are all cookie-tags that enable behaviorly-targeted advertising. You can (and are) cookied on almost every website page you visit. This is a lucrative way for publishers to put ads in the face of relevant or in-market consumers that sell for a CPC/CPM much higher than generic RO display advertising... therefore higher dollar spends for companies who want to put their message/product out there.
Ever notice how you see a lot of the same ads on various sites? It's not coincidence.
I've been in the digital advertising industry for almost 10yrs, 95% of those companies mentioned above are all advertisers in one form or another.
You wanna talk about tracking? I heard your ISP *has to* save everything you do online for 2 years! Its an FBI law of some sorts..
Are there ad banners on this site? I've never seen one over here.
I guess its just to make surfing the internet faster due to to the fact it has stored our location, cookies etc.
There's an easy fix for tracking cookies, you can set your browser to ask if you want to allow a cookie when they try to set them and just deny the ones you don't need or want. Most of the time ads will try to set them by themselves.
Https everywhere is also a good plug in you should check out.

People flip out too much about privacy. There is *too much paranoia.*
Adsense and Analytics is so that your search results and advertisements more closely match your interests and general search topics. Yeah, they're tracking what you do. What of it? What are they using it for, but to help you?
All advertising services track you. We live in a world where you are not guaranteed privacy by being on the internet. If you think you have a fleck of security, you're wrong. You're being tracked by everyone and everything; every website you visit logs your IP, from which they can often find your home address... are you scared?
Oh, wait, no harm has come of it. That's right. No need to worry, everyone.
EDIT:
Just like to add, I actually appreciate not having to end all my google searches with 'for droid x' anymore. It's learned that my account tends to look for droid x information.

Right, you post pics of your Vegas weekend on facebook, have your resume all over LinkedIn, have YouTube videos of your kids but get worried about silly ad cookies on public forums. It's the internet... the minute you plug it in you can be seen. Don't be paranoid and charge hard!

[APP] Spawt - A Location Bookmarking App for the Galaxy S2

Hi all, I'm a Singaporean developer and I'm here to tell you that I'm sick of idiots posting/bragging their daily life on Facebook, I mean, if you want to do that, why not do it so that I can ACTUALLY use that information next time? Thankfully, I'm a developer and I can actually do something about it.
WHAT IF, those stupid FOOD pictures taken at the restaurant actually POP UP the next time I am hungry and near that area? WHAT IF those slutty clubbing pictures could actually help me pick a club when I want to go? So here's my solution.
Spawt is a location-based experience bookmarking service so now you could actually point those idiots to the app and actually end up building a beautiful scrapbook of experiences that you and your friends can mutually share and discover.
Features
- Bookmark a great experience by creating a Checkpoint.
- Contextually discover interesting experiences from fellow Spawtters based on your current location.
* Spawt believes that your friends' experiences matter more, so your Facebook friends' Checkpoints will be treated as first class citizens.
- Builds a catalog of Checkpoints that will serve as a scrapbook of experiences for when you need an inspiration on what to do next.
- No need to create a whole new social network, leverages your existing Facebook network.
* Note, we send NOTHING back to Facebook, your privacy is MY topmost concern. (I should know, I'm a Facebook cynic.)
Download the app and tell me what you make of it, and most importantly how I can go on making it better for you and your friends. Search for "Spawt Beta" or get it here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5jdHJsZWZmIl0.
PS: Oh did I mention Galaxy S2 kicks ass?
PSS: Oh also, if the app does crash, and it will, please click Report so I can fix it so you can swear a little bit less when the next update comes.
This is a seriously fantastic idea. One think that may be a good idea to add would be to be able to use pictures from your gallery, rather than your camera, when making a new checkpoint. I'm really loving the GUI, thank you !

thanks for trying out the app! definitely a feature in the backlog.

What's your favorite app for checking sports scores, news & rumors?

I use and hate the Yahoo sports app.
At first glance it's great & easy to use.
But the news section sucks.
Every bit of news is just a one paragraph click-bait to click open an external site and 75% of the time the external links are super slow to load or don't load anything at all.
I tried the ESPN app and didn't like it much either.
Wanna keep up to date on NBA, NFL, NCAA and MMA action.
The Score. Easily destroys Yahoo's app and everything about ESPN is awful so I'm not surprised the app is bad.
Another vote for the score.
Nothing beats The Score. ESPN app is too unwieldy.
I use theScore as well, been using for past three years or so. Just their new releases have messed up with long character club names, though that's only for football I have noticed. No idea about those sports though, but they were there when I installed the app, so could try it.
Thanks guys. I downloaded theScore and it's almost perfect!
A big issue I'm having is how to follow favorite teams, etc.
The app just presents me with local teams at the top.
Then I have to scroll through hundreds of other teams from various leagues or search by name.
Does anyone know how to make it only show you NFL teams so you can choose NFL. Then only show NBA teams so you can choose NBA, etc. etc.

I do recall that being dumb/non-intuitive. I'm pretty sure there was a way to just search by name. I don't recall and I cannot replicate since you only do that at startup. I remember it took forever to find the Cubs, and I'm wondering to myself, "how does it suggest all these teams to me but not the Cubs?" Note: I live in the suburbs of Chicago, so this is just preposterous. I like the idea of suggesting certain teams for convenience (based on location) but it needs some better algorithms, and should make finding other teams simpler.

One shortcut was that I checked the scores of the teams I wish to follow, then from those individual matchups, I clicked the stars for the teams I wanted. However, you can also go into Settings, Alerts to set up your teams.
CBS Sports Fantasy is pretty good.
I use Bleacher Report Team Stream. Love it

I don't use any specific app. Just ask the Google assistant..
This Pixel is the first voice response engine that gets my voice requests right 99.9% of the time. No more "what's the latest Bronco's score" being translated as "what's the latest bongos door" or some such other nonsense.
If you haven't tried it, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. It works for all sorts of requests, not just sports scores.
I just use Google assistant now. It's learned my teams and the phone shows the appropriate sport symbol in the top left when a game is on.(hockey sticks etc) I get very reliable updates, recaps, highlights, upcoming games,

The assistant is really useful, but lacks a lot of information IMO. Whatever feels comfortable to you. I prefer The Score.

"The Athleti" for Android
I have to saw I absolutely love this app and what these guys are doing. Option 1 is to read the same old recycled articles on the major websites for free, or Option 2 is to subscribe to The Athletic and read carefully researched articles that are actually worth your time. I can't say enough good things about The Athletic and I'm fine paying for content if it's new, unique, and interesting. Keep up the great work guys!!

Stop this damn auto-play of the hidden Huawei developer video

Okay, this is getting out of hand. I get it, you want to promo the partnership with Huawei. But. Does the forum HAVE to automatically play the video - which is hidden on most pages - on every new page I open? First of all, most of your readers don't speak Chinese. Second, the video player is hidden, out of view - no way to pause it, short of refreshing the page (which, luckily, stops the playback, up until a new page is opened, in which case it just keeps going).
I'm an app developer. I have *zero* interest in publishing any apps on the Huawei app gallery. I have zero interest in their Play Services replacement. I don't speak Chinese. I don't want to listen to Chinese people talking about how "awesome" the Huawei app gallery is. I want to read the forum while listening to music. I don't want Chinese chatter over my music. And I don't think it's hard to understand user needs.
I get it, you have a big partnership, whoop-dee-doo. But pushing this content on users who simply don't want a single ****ing thing to do with it, will just alienate users. This "advertisement" has already made me consider leaving XDA, and it's only been happening since this morning! It also assured me that recommending people against buying Huawei devices was a good idea. Auto playing this video, without visible controls, is basically taking a massive dump on 99% of your users who couldn't give a flying **** about Huawei's developer conference. I've known a bunch of forums that adapted similarly aggressive advertisement tactics. You know what's common in them? All of them are gone, disappeared years ago, because they alienated their userbase with it.
So please, either remove this hidden video block, or disable autoplay, or at least give users an option to disable it on their end.
