Is there an alternative to News Republic? - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys Blinkfeed's News republic app has gotten on my nerves since HTC brought it in.
Is there an alternative news feed app that I can integrate into Blinkfeed?
Is there a folder I can put Google News and weather into so that will work or even my BBC news app or The Telegraph..
Anything is better than News Republic, none of the settings ever work. I don't get any of the news I select, just trite, tabloid nonsense.

You cant swap it but you can disable the app.

Yep but then what's on blinkfeed.
Where's the folder that has Highlights in it, you tube and the like.

Honestly, don't swap stuff out as you'll probably crash the phone. Besides, you need root access to change anything internal with the system apps.
You can customise blinkfeed. That will be your best option. Omit all the news stuff and have only youtube or whatever you use.

Lol, I just want some decent news on blinkfeed.

[Q] Will the Desire do what my Diamond 2 does?

I am currently using a Topaz windows mobile based phone, and thinking about switching to a Desire.
However, I use my phone extensively for business, and need to know if there are some things that Android will allow.
First off, I need to be able to access my home network with the wireless. Currently I use Resco explorer, browse to my server share, and copy the files I will need to the SD card. Is this possible on Android? Is it just as easy? I often have to do this first thing in the morning, when I don't have a lot of time. This is an absolute deal breaker for me, so I am really looking for some help before I commit to a new phone.
Non show stoppers but nice to have;
Cookie's Home Tab type display , which allows me to show my next 3 calendar appointments, and 3 tasks on the home screen. Will Sense allow this on the Desire? I like the Sense interface and widgets, so would prefer to keep Sense, but am prepared to apply additional software to allow me to do what I need to. (Paid or otherwise).
The ability to map hardware keys to specific functions (eg I currently have long press on the back key to switch off my wifi. Handy for in the car, when I forget to switch it off).
Ability to edit open office, and ms office documents.
That's it I guess. Any and all feedback very much appreciated.
1) yes you can browse files on your home network using the desire, you need 3rd party software tho also there are apps that will let you controll your pc and or device remotlely from your device and or pc
2) there are loads of calendar widgets on the marketplace im sure one will take your fancy
3) the wifi will switch itself off after x amout of time idle
4) the desire comes with quick office out of the box but there are tons of office apps so yeah
Just a small warning if you think to sync your mobile with the PC (callendar, notes, mails, contacts) via bluetooth - it's not possible in android.
Well, not entirely true, as there is "Missing Sync" in the market, but costs for about $40 - a bit too much.
So, try to love your usb cable
Or sync through the google things and sync your home stuff with the google things. For me it's annoying as I hate the google things, but it does sort of work.

Why would you buy a google thing-centric phone if you hate google things?
On it's way
Thanks guys, you've convinced me.
Ordered from O2 for the princely sum of £285 + VAT, which I thought was a mistake, but it seems not. Be rude not to at that price.
Bit of luck it will arrive tomorrow, as I'm not working, so can play all day

You're not "sharing" with google though. You're just using their webspace to host information such as calendar and contacts.
Do you really think that Google have the time to look though all of their user's data, see your calendar information and contacts?

Why would they bother with your phone when they've got street view cars to access open WiFi networks?

Most people here swear by Astro file manager and their add ons.
Check out the Sense agenda widget for upcoming appointments and tasks.
Widgets are the way to go, Sense widgets for WiFi, mobile connectivity, airplane mode etc etc etc......

[Q] Task (to-do app) widget

does anyone know where and to which file the Samsung task app (to-do app)
saves data (my tasks or to-dos) cos there isn't a widget for it and without one the app is pretty much useless. if i know where the file is i can create my own widget for it.
much appreciated
I just use "ColorNote". It's basically the same thing except it's got a decent widget, and more features. Makes a good shopping-list program.
https://market.android.com/search?q=colornote
And it's free!
Best guess is that the Samsung "Tasks" app stores its data in one of the native system databases. It supports external syncing, but to what, I've no idea.
I would like that too
It would be very helpful.

Best New Launcher to Check out!

So I have found a new launcher that has great potential. Kind of reminds me of Wisbar Desktop from my WM days as you can put items anywhere on the screen and they are not locked into a grid like every other launcher. Besides swiping your pages side to side, you can also scroll down on each page like WP7.
Has lots customizations and the developer is extremely responses. Received a email back from him within 15 minutes after contacting him. Still has some bugs and he is aware of them and is constantly working on it.
I am running my screen at 720p and I totally recommend that as you can get lots on your screen!
It is free as well!
SSLauncher:

Here is a screen shot for ya...
I have been using this for a few days now and have to agree...coolest launcher I have used so far. This is as cool and "revolutionary" as when ADW and Launcher Pro came out for the first time.

Storage

Allows an application to write to the USB storage. Allows an application to write to the SD card.
I would need an explanation of why it needs permissions to make phone calls without my intervention before I can install it. I might be paranoid here, but that whole "without my intervention" bugs me.
I'll try this out but how do you get the magazine look for the page turn
Its smooth but I don't like how icons are not applied on a grid. Everything is free-standing and I can't get anything to align. Its really bothering me.

because its a launcher/app. If you were to set a contacts icon on the screen for direct dial or something like that, you would not be able to make a call because you didn't want that permission.
I'm pretty sure every launcher needs that permission.
I can't believe I didn't think of that. I don't add contact shortcuts, but it does make sense. I think I'll go download it now.

Haven't had a single crash yet.
I'm a complete ADWEX honk, always have been, but I must say that I really, really, like this launcher. The page-turning anims are simple but sick, IMHO, and it's such a lightweight launcher in general, I think I'm gonna keep this one for a while....
Very nice.

The developer is aware of the issues and is currently working on fixing them. I run into problems editing pages after I add a lot of items on the homepage.
Totally agree this can be the best launcher to date with as little more work.
If you haven't tried yet, drag items to the bottom of the screen as fat as can go and you will see you can then scroll the page down. There are probably so many cool things to do in the launcher. If anyone figures some tricks out, post it up!
has anyone figured out how to get a calendar widget to work?
Android agenda widget or any other full screen calendar widget doesn't want to work
so far, that's the only issue I have..really cool stuff!
thanks!

Simple Calendar widget works fine. Just do not choose the scroll option in the widget. Any widget that scrolls will not work.
thanks man, it was the "scrolling" option that was messing me up...
EDIT:
I have to say, once a couple small things work out, like sculling widgets, this launcher is going to be super hot...
Never saw anything so customizable as this launcher is..

Another cool trick I just noticed for lining up apps and widgets on the screen...
Hold down whatever you want to move. Then let your finger off of it to bring up the little menu that says edit, etc. Then either click the back button or touch somewhere else on the screen and it will leave your item highlighted. In cse you didn't know, at this point you can re-size your widget but if you move the whole widget around you will see red lines show up when it is lined up with other items near it making it simple to know where you are placing it.
It is kind of hard to explain but try and and you will understand what I am talking about....
Its pretty cool and has A LOT of potential.
pretty cool but could've been better

[Q] Windows Challenge Apps

Need help beating the windows phone, yes I know it is rigged, but there have been successes.
This is to win the new challenge and get a $1000 GC
SO i need some apps/widgets to help beat them
Challenges to beat
1. snap picture of yourself, tag it, and post it facebook
I know HTC can do this from what I remember. But touchwiz don't have this built in. The facebook app and friendcaster does not have an immediate way to tag the picture when posting. Are there any other apps?
2. movie showtimes at the nearest theater
best one i found so far is cinemadroid, but does not get the showtimes of every city and also have a trial period where I have to wipe data or purchase the full one
flixter helps too
3. Check SO or best friend facebook status and send them a text message.
HTC i believe have something built in.
I found Contapps to be helpful. It's best to know what they already posted and just say it out loud before it even finish loading like what they do lol
4. Post a status to both facebook and twitter
tweetdeck widget
5. Translation
Need a good picture translating app
I found photo translator free but it is so so.
6. send a facebook message then text message to the same person
any apps that does that well?

not sure how to actually use that app to share besides maybe photos.
tweetdeck actually does it pretty well for #4. But how do you use it to send a message to a particular person via both sms and facebook message or post.

edit: google goggles actually works pretty well. there are two challenges, one is to translate something to english and to translate english to something else.

lol yeah its really YMMV, some people check, some people don't. But our stock is actually pretty good compared to many other androids so it can perform pretty well.
Anyways if anybody is interested, who is still eligible to challenge.
I gotta a couple more apps we can use, but since nobody is really contributing... jordan and killbynature, if you guys are still eligible to do the challenge pm me.
BTW we're gonna lose the translation challenge, i think only iphone users can compete against them in that category.
can you elaborate on number 3 and 6? i dont think i understand what needs to be done
btw testing my atrix against youtube videos i was able to defeat the post to twitter and facebook at same time (using social status stock atrix widget )
beat them on music using SOUNDHOUND
take photo and share inmediatly using stock camera app.
also it has the option to disable the screen lock on the stock rom
Maybe you can use some of those apps in yours.

Missing Applications - Muppet operator?

Hey guys,
just unboxed and powered up my new 10.1 2014 edition but something very odd is happening. When starting up for the first time I stupidly asked it to restore from google all my apps (which were from my galaxy s4). Anyway, it did so. It also did two system updates.
Anyway, I now look in the Apps (you know that grid button, bottom right) and I can't see items like Evernote or Twitter yet, they are installed! I can however see them in the Application Manager. I have the grid set to "Show Alphabetical". I must be being a muppet so please tell me what stupid mistake have I done?
Thanks in advance!
Also noticed the Twitter widget isn't appearing .... very odd!
Look for Google, Samsung, and Galaxy Plus in the app drawer. They are folders and have other apps inside.

OK so you are correct for the APPS but not the widgets! Still don't have a twitter widget, for example. Also, what's really confusing me is that I can usually just use the search and type "evernote" (for example) and it would appear yet, it seems that as it's in a folder, it doesn't show up as a search result where as apps that aren't do show up.
Very unimpressive.
Never the less, I'm now up and running with 3rd party Facebook and Twitter widgets and have now managed to locate the missing apps.
Thanks Maris!
(I look forward to custom ROMs removing this limitation)
