As the title says, I cannot figure out how to route audio through the USB-C to 3.5mm jack when making phone calls. The audio recorder registers my mic, and VLC plays audio after a button press.
Any info on this would be awesome!

A bit off topic but are you facing the issue of your phone going to download mode after a few reboots in lineage os?
Audio issue is on all gsi roms that I have tried. I tried to fix it but my limited knowledge wasn't enough to get it fixed.
For reboots try magisk 16.7

I have an external mic (called an iRig Mic) that connects to a phone with a headset-jack.
On an iPhone it can be used to record audio when shooting videos, but when i connect it to my Nexus S running android, the sound from the mic is not recorded. Instead the audio from the internal mic i used.
Is there any way to change the audio source when recording videos? This would be a great feature for journalists using their phone as a camcorder for interviews.
Recording audio via 3.5 jack on android using external microphone
You have to buy adapter which will split the signal for microphone in and audio out (you probably know 3.5 jack in your phone is 2 directional as it supports headset with mic)
You can try to look for it on Amazon (headset buddy)
or solder into headset in the pins which are responsible for mic signal.
Then,
I know only 1 app for android which supports recording from external microphone:
Arabela Audio Recorder - choose DEFAULT audio source and it should catch the signal from external mic connected through adapter via 3.5 jack.
I THINK it can catch the audio while recording video because it works in background ... so later you will be able to remove the audio from video recording and join it with the one you recorded using Arabela with some kind of video editor
regards
couple of questions,
for the external mic is it stereo or mono?
any other programs you know that can capture external mic input since this post?
thanks!

Just ordered a head stage USB DAC cable that is confirmed to work with the s3 but I'm curious to know if audio input for voice calls/search will work while using an external DAC. It was totally broken on the nexus 7 with any ROM/kernel I tried when using a fiio e10.
Should be easy for anyone with a working USB DAC to answer
Thanks.
Anyone with a USB DAC working with this phone can answer. Can someone please so I know whether to cancel my USB DAC order?

At first, I thought you meant sending audio back to the phone through the DAC. I just tried making a voice call while using my total bithead dac and it was fine. The music through the dac paused (neutron music player), the phone mic and speaker worked for the call, then the music started playing again when the phone call ended. The phone call did not go through the dac. Voice search did the same thing: hit voice search button, music paused, listened to my voice through phone mic, results came up and music started playing again.

Thanks for the info!! Exactly the thorough response I was hoping for.
Sucks that the outgoing phone audio doesn't go through the DAC but I guess I was hoping for too much.
Dear All,
I have a quite big problem, when I want to make a phone call in my car.
I connect the phone's audio out via a minijack to my car's radio and I want to use my phone's built in microphone for phone calls.
Unfortunately the mic does not record my voice loud enough. When I use the phone's built in loudspeaker it works fine, but when I use the car radio as sound output the mic does not record loud enough.
Does anybody know how to solve this issue?
My Samsung Galaxy Note 1 had a car mode available for this.
Thanks!
Simply, the headphone jack also contains the mic connector for a proper phone head/earphone and mic. Plugging your phone into your stereo via this jack disconnects the internal mic in favour of the headset mic which of course you won't have if you connect to the car stereo. So you are effectively disabling the ability to use the phone for calls when plugged in this way.
But the mic is NOT disabled. It is still enabled but is recording the voice as if it is being used like in a normal phone call. All I need is a function to switch the mic to some kind of a handsfree mode.
Sorry for my English.
With "normal phone call" I mean the phone being held right at your ear.
With "handsfree mode" I mean speakerphone mode.
So I need the audio out via stereo jack and I need the voice in via phone microphone in speakerphone mode...
Can you try using a cable that doesn't pass microphone? I think the difference is the full cable WITH mic uses 3 connections and the standard audio only uses 2.
This will prevent the internal microphone from being disabled.

I already use a standard audio cable with 2 connections only. The problem is not that the microphone is not working at all but it is not recording loudly enough. I simply want it to record as loudly as it does on speakerphone mode.
Hey guys, I just got a new HTC 10 (stock, updated to Nougat). I like to use a Sennheiser Game Zero headset for when I make phone/skype calls, but the microphone records a rhythmic static-y clicking. It does pick up my microphone audio, but the clicking is there on top of it. It stops when I mute the headset microphone via it's flip-up mechanism, but resumes when the microphone is unmuted.
I've used this headset regularly with both my PC and my older HTC One (m7) without the issue. I've also tried using a pair of cheap earbuds with an in-line mic with the 10, and it doesn't seem to have that problem.
For reference, here is a brief recording of the sound, uploaded to OneDrive: https://1drv.ms/u/s!Ai8_tx6LPas6h1-LZ0oNc-qBt9wP
If there's a better place to upload a FLAC recording that won't require outright downloading the file, I'll gladly re-upload it elsewhere for convenience.
Has anyone experienced this, or know what the cause/solution might be?
I accidentally discovered strange thing while recording the sound via external microphone (the headset that came with the kit) in default recording app and camera app (maybe in other apps too).
That's what it's all about: when i plug the heaset 3.5mm jack in, the message pop up: "External microphone will be used to record audio". Ok. But! The sound can aсtually recording from extenral mic only if you immediately start talking in it, otherwise it will be recording only from internal mic! Is it a bug or feature?
P.S. And the second question, maybe it stupid:
I tried to record sound from Nintendo switch to Galaxy S9 by connecting them via 3.5mm cable (male-male), the sound did not recorded Now i know it was useless, but is safe for both gadgets to connect their 3.5 ports?
