I have recently rooted, installed CWM & CM10.1 -- The problem I have is now my internal SD is close to being full, but I havent installed anything on it yet besides a couple apps and some pictures.. Total Internal memory was 16GB.
When I go to Setting > Storage - its shows I have 12.5 GB of total space, but only about 1 GB available.. It shows apps and other things on the phone such as - APS 293MB, Pictures 550MB etc.. But added up it only amounts to maybe 3GB.. So I seem to be missing 13GB of space..
What I think may have happened (and I dont know how to fix) is.... Is it possible that I did the back up of my stock rom & titanium back ups etc.. all onto my internal SD card ? I didnt back anything up to an external drive or my PC, becasue the instructions I followed did tell to do that, nor how to do that.
So if that is the case I would like to extract those file from the SD card on my phone to creat some more room ?

Even if you did backup everything to the internal sd, a cwm backup is usually about a gig and I have 100 and change titanium backups and it also takes up about w gig so I don't think that is the problem. You should be able to hook it up to your PC and check the folder sizes on your SD card. You can also move the clockwork mod folder and TB folders to your external sd but you will need to set up the new location in TB's preference s option. If all else fails backup everything and copy all pics vids downloads and everything else you want to your PC or external SD, and wipe everything from your phones settings menu. This will wipe all data and game data too so be careful to get everything off it you want. Oh yea, make sure you have sync'd or backup up your contacts. That's a pain in the ass.
I had a problem like that when I first got my s3 last year and for me it was 2 files in the lost folder that were like 5 gigs each

Would it have anything to do with when after I rooted and was installing CWM and the new ROM.. It said for me to back up and save my old original ROM/configuration.. Which I did select back up.. But I didnt save it to my PC, I believe it just saved to my phone somewhere.. If I may need that someday I should likely save it correct ? Can someone give me an idea how to access those files so I can transfer off my phone ?
Maybe that is the problem ?
I don't recall ever seeing that option but it was awhile ago. You could try grabbing a root explorer and look around for a large folder. Es file manager for example. I kept my stock backup for awhile but never needed it. You can always find a stock image to reflash with Odin but I'm paranoid and keep at least one cwm backup in case. You could reflash the ROM you put on when you rooted and choose not to select backup this time. It will clear the phone so as above be sure to transfer or save anything you want. Get a little bit used to the process of backing up apps and reinstalling them when you switch roms cause these devs are awesome and always have new features to try. It goes pretty quick after you do it a thousand times. What ROM are you currently using?

There is a free app called storage analyser in the play store. I didn't try it but it looks like it will break down what is stored and where. Could help in this situation. Your internal SD should pop up on the computer so if the problem is in there you shouldn't need a root explorer to find that. If its not in there maybe to a cwm backup to external sd and flash something new.

what program did you use to flash the ROM? how many times have you flashed a ROM (specifically 4.2.2 ROM)?

I have only flashed once.. Using a tutorial from XDA, I rooted using ODIN, I installed CWM v6.0.3.0. followed by flahsing CM10.1 Rom. (10.1 -20130414-nightly-d2att)
During the tutorial it said I should back up my existing stock ROM incase I ever want to go back, so from CWM I seleced back up/restore then selected back up. It didnt tell me how to find this file and save to my PC or somewhere safe.. so is it possible that there are a bunch of files still on my S3 that I cannot see from just plugging it into my pc ?
I would really like to do this properly and remove everything from my S3 and just start with a fresh ROM again.. and know that what I need to have backed up was done properly onto my PC or somewhere other than my phones SD card. pls help = )
I just remembered a problem I ran into while performing the above steps.. I dont know exactly what happened but I think the version of CWM may have been old.. so I tried to update or install a newer version (followed another tutorial) is there a change there is the old version still on SD card ?
Do you have a micro sd card? This would allow you to completely wipe the device and install your OS

Yes I do have one I can install. (2GB) would you be able give me a list of the steps on how to do this properly ? (or link to a post that does)
Also, I do find I ejoy the CM10.1, is the verion I have one that I should be running or is there a standard version ?
If you enjoy cm10, stick with it. I'm on tasks 4/23 release and its running beautifully
Place the rom and gapps on the sd card, get what you want off the phone and you should be all set.
Check out the link in my signature for more information on flashing. when you format /system, also format /data + media.
Before you begin, go in rom manager and update your cwm recovery. Latest is 6.0.3.1. Or download the one at the bottom of post #2 in my signature link and flash it in cwm (then advanced > reboot recovery to have it take effect before flashing the rom).

Ok, I got CWM updated to 6.0.3.1, I backed up apps with TB and saved file to ext SD and got all my pics/vids transferred as well.. Now I just have a couple questions.
1) When I originally backed up my stock ROM in CWM it would have saved to my phones internal SD correct ? Because I could never find it. I just did a back up again and I plug phone into PC and cant find that one either ? Where would the be going ?
2) Can you link me to a good version of CM10.1 for my model as well as the proper google apps.. I cannot locate.

If you backed up to your internal sd card then the location should be something like storage/titaniumBackup. Inside that folder would be an oddly dated folder with all the contents. Transfer that to your computer as well.
Cm10 and the respective gapps are in the original android development section. You can also find their stable and nightly releases on their website. Be sure to only use the ROMs for your device model

Ok I just installed new ROM and now its worse, now I have less internal room.
Here are the steps I have followed.. (obviously its not wiping my entire internal SD right ?)
- Wipe Data / Factory Reset
- Wipe Cache Partition
- Advanced --> Wipe Dalvik Cache
- Mounts / Storage - Format System
- Install Zip from SD --> CM10 file.
Once phone boots up, I go to Settings --> Storage - Here it says I have only 2.6GB of space available and I have absolutely nothing on my phone yet, fresh install.
Am I missing a step ?

Nevermind. Too late to respond.
I've found myself stuck trying to flash a ROM. I'm a newbie, this was my first attempt at something like this, I though I read enough about the process but I guess I screwed up something. I will try to be to the point.
Phone: Samsung Galaxy S3 AT&T i747
Rooted phone with Casual, installed ROM Toolbox and purchased the pro upgrade.
installed TWRP 2.5 and made a nandroid backup, the only place this backup existed was in internal storage.
used ROM toolbox to backup user apps and user data
selected cyanogenmod 10.1 RC5 from within ROM Toolbox and there was a requester for gapps and a checked the box for that also. When the DL was complete I installed the ROM queue with those two items and I checked the boxes Wipe Data & Cache and Wipe dalvic-cache.
Phone went to recovery mode (i guess) and appeared to clear the memory and load the new rom, the phone rebooted and I got the cyanogenmod boot screen but then it went to a requester saying:
Unfortunately , the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped.
When you hit ok you get:
Unfortunately, setup wizard has stopped.
this requester never goes away, just keeps popping up when you hit ok.
So I removed the battery and booted the phone in recovery mode and try to restore but the restore nandroid file in not shown. If I hit the center button in the restore window it says "updating partition details" but never returns.
Whenever you power it up normally now you end up in this gapps loop.
My searching suggested I may have tried to install the wrong version of google apps somehow. What are my options for trying to recover from this? Does my backup still exist somewhere?
If process.gapps is your only warning you can try to reflash the gapps zip from here. http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip If this does not fix your problem, you will have to head deeper into the rabbit hold
You can look for your back with a file explorer. Should be in sdcard/TWRP/BACKUPS/******** (random number). If you dont see them here, check your ext-sd in the same location. If you don't see them, they are gone. Do a Nandroid backup now just to be sure you have one. You should chose to back it up to external in TWRP. As for your FC problem, it would appear that you have not wiped fully. You will likely need to factory reset. the problem is this will remove everything. Titanium back up is a great product for situations like this. If you have used it, you can transfer your backup from the internal storage while connected to your pc. Also copy your DCIM folder as it will contain your photos. This is why you will need to do another Nandroid, because worst case scenario, you can just restore this one.
Thanks for the reply. I will try to reflash the gapps file from the external as soon I can download it, the site is having some trouble right now. I made another Nandroid of the phones current state and stored it to external. I did also have Titanium backup and had backups of the whole system with it. Unfortunately they are also only on the internal storage.
Re-installing the gapps zip file off the extSD from within TWRP did the trick. All the data and backups I created are also still there and are now backed up in several places.
Something that compounded the problem was the 64GB sd card I have for the phone. I was not able to mount it on either of my linux mint machines or an XP machine. Some oddness with the exFAT file system on it, I used a 4GB card I had laying around and it worked fine.
Thank you for the help, the phone is now running CM which is what I wanted and I learned a few things too.

I just bought a 64GB card as well. You may be having troubles mounting it due to a partition that comes factory in the SD. If this is the case, you can look at post #57 on the following page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1915385&page=6
It helped me tremendously.
So I was following the instructions for the root, and am at the TWRP part where I select the zip file I placed onto the drive. When I go to install I see a ton of listed folders, but can't seem to figure out where the heck the zip file is I put on the device, I had dropped it into the root. Any help with this? I can not post in any other forum.

So you didn't put it into any of the folders? Scroll down the zip should be at the bottom. Otherwise reboot and recheck that the file downloaded.

Here's the thing, I can't find ANY of the folders that are listed when I open the internal stoage on my PC. At the top of TWRP it says "Internal Storage (0mb)" The folders I see are boot, cache, data, datadata, dedv, emmc, etc, external_sd, internal_sd, license, proc, recovery, res, root, sbin, sd-ext,, sdcard, supersu, sys, system, tmp, sys system, tmp, usb-otg . So confused.
Sigh and when at the bootloader or whatever it looks like I don't have access to the internal storage via my computer. Just shows up as "Android" on my PC.
I "Copied log to SD", it says it copied it to /data/media. When I go into the file manager. That location doesn't exist. Nothing inside that data folder....at all.

I didnt understand your problem really well. Try clicking in internal sd folder and you should see zip otherwise at the top of twrp where you select storage select again internal storage and it should popup if i understood correctly.

There is a folder by the name "0" which you can find in TWRP and also from the File explorer. Place the SuperSU.zip inside the "0" folder using file explorer and they try to locate it from the TWRP. It should be visible then.
It worked for me, hope it does for you too.

I experienced a similar problem with my nexus 5x and ended up on this thread from google search. I got it working after entering the password at password prompt, when phone started to boot into recovery. This decrypted the storage and mounted it, before booting to recovery. If I didn't enter a password and skipped it(hit cancel and moved on), then in the recovery I see that storage and sdcard as 0.
Hope this helps someone.

I was doing the same thing, cancelling this password prompt, I thought it was a encryption thing instead of a decryption thing (should read better).
Now I can access all files again on TWRP, thanks!
EDIT: I thought a bit more why this happend: it is of course because we activated the option 'ask pattern unlock before booting android', which is an option in the Nexus 5X welcome screens.
So I assume TWRP needs that pattern as well to access the Android folders once it's activated.
Also: I had to click the '3x3' option in the Password screen to make the pattern responsive, in case that's a hint someone looks for.

Where did you see it asking for a password? I have booted into recovery and can't see any password prompt and the storage is still at 0mb. Help?
I had the problem.
I solved it by formating the data.
> fastboot format userdata
Do not forget to do a backup of your backup in your PC, then put it back and restore..!!
I have soft bricked my device, after reading your forums, I downloaded a stock ROM for my device... transferred it to my ext SD card but i couldnt find the RAR file in TWRP.(install) Even tried my luck with usb otg... i could see the rom (rar) file in file manager even copied it from ext SD to internal storage... i have double checked the location of the file... is on root it isny inside any folders. Pls help
Do what I said format the internal SD.
In your twrp format internal storage.
Then reboot and problem solved.

Hi All,
Hopefully this should be a very quick question. I'm loading CM onto my phone, and this is the first ROM I've ever used. I've loaded CWM, made a backup, and I'm about ready to go and load CW on. I've noticed though that out of the 5 or so gig the phone comes with for internal memory, about 4gb is used up. Is this just the system and the back up and apps?? It seems quite a lot. Will CM fill this up further? Will I encounter any issues?
I hope thats all clear, but excuse me for being a beginner.
EDIT: This is now even more relevant now CM is flashed. I've just looked in the file viewer, and there's still all the folders etc from the old samsung, and amazonmp3 etc etc. I thought the "wipe data/factory reset" in CWM would have cleared all this.....

Factory reset only wipes the data partition. For the first time installing a custom ROM, and especially going from stock to cm for the first time, you should wipe the system partition which can be done from cwm.

Hi again.
So I finally got round to trying to get this sorted.... and I'm failing. I've booted into CWM, rerun the "wipe/data factory reset", rerun the "wipe cache" then went into "mounts and storage" and did a format of the system partition, but it still hasn't cleared any of the data.
Am I doing something incorrectly? I didn't want to play around with it too much, in case i bork it all. Any help would be massively appreciated.
Also, I'm a bit concerned about what formatting the system partition will do. Does it just clear the rom already on there, and I can then flash Cyanogenmod back on from my sd card?

Formatting system partition wipes the currently installed rom / system apps.
How do you know that it is not wiping the data? If you do a system format and your rom still boots then it isn't working properly.
It could be a problem with the version of recovery (cwm / twrp) that you're using. It can't hurt to update it, which could be the case here.

So if you see the attached, this is what I'm looking at. The phone has 5.5gb internal memory, of which, looking at the below, I'm using about 1.5gb, BUT I only have 1gb left to use, and I get warnings about lack of memory.... So there's 3gb being used for.... I don't know.
When I first put cyanogen on, I noticed that the file structure from stock was still there (i.e. all the folder my old apps made). I expected when I put CM on that it would wipe everything, including all of those folders.
You can try an app called es file explorer, it has a feature that fully scans the contents of the internal SD card.
It should show a list of all the folders from the old stock data folders. You can multi select and delete what you want.
Another option which is more efficient, is to make a full backup of all the internal data in your PC. Then fully format the internal SD card via cwm and transfer which contents you need back from the PC such as photos and music. Asides from photos, music and other media items, most of those internal SD contents aren't needed as Android uses these folders for app data etc.
Always make back ups.

Yeah, I have got ES File explorer. I couldn't find a "scan" but I've gone through all the folder on my device and I can see the following:
/storage - 3.83gb
/mnt - 2.11gb
/sdcard - 893mb
A lot of this seems to be duplicated though.... The stuff on mnt seems to be a shortcut to whats in sdcard, and all that in storage seems to be in the other two. I don't technically think it's all duplicated, but different ways to get to the same stuff, which makes me very nervous about deleting any of it....
Just got a liitle program to give a break down. See attached.
Surely my system data shouldn't be that big?
I recommend you make a full back up in your PC and format the SD card and transfer the contents of your current SD folder back. I've done it before on different devices, I do it on first root / cm install coming from stock because of all the old obsolete data. Apps like clean master won't removing it because it's marked as important for stock users. It shouldn't be a problem.
Note:
Having different links to the data partition is normal. It's purpose is compatibility.

It's possible that's reserved for the system. Mine is similar. You can still use it if you convert user apps into system ones.

I recommend you make a full back up in your PC and format the SD card and transfer the contents of your current SD folder back. I've done it before on different devices, I do it on first root / cm install coming from stock because of all the old obsolete data. Apps like clean master won't removing it because it's marked as important for stock users. It shouldn't be a problem.
Note:
Having different links to the data partition is normal. It's purpose is compatibility.

It's something to do with backups. I'm gonna read through that thread and see if I can find out what I can/can't delete without bricking the phone.
Massively appreciate your time and repsonses on this iKlutz. Just out of interest, did you do a backup when you installed a rom? Have you found that the backup is this big??
Use ES file explorer or other file manager with root explorer capabilities.
Go to /data/media
You should see:
0
clockworkmod
legacy
obb
In clockworkmod folder I've found a backup (2.0GB) that was made by mistake to internal sotrage, since I allways do backup in CWM Recovery to external SD.
Deleted and 2.0GB were gained.

Hmmm. Data/Media is empty.... I might delete the back up from CWM. If the worst happens, I can always flash from the external SD card can't i? Do I "need" that back up of the device when it was stock?

Do not delete.
Copy the folder(s) that you have in the "backup" to the external SD card to the "backup" folder in the "clockworkmod" folder.
Then, you can delete the backup folder located in "data/media/clockworkmod/".
I allways save the backup of the stock ROM's.
To restore in CWM recovery, simply choose "restore from external SD card". And to backup, choose "backup to external SD card", or it will backup to the internal memory.

No.... I don't really know what to do with it.
I've got an s3 mini with Cyanogen and CWM and the system data portion is only 54mb.
I might go into CWM and start deleting things. If I delete the backup I made of my stock phone when I first rooted and added CWM, I can't see too many issues.... I can always flash a stock ROM again can't I?

Yes, using Odin you can flash stock ROM again.
Next time do the backups in CWM to the external SD card!
My phone is currently totally F'd up and I'm planning to do an RUU but I want to get the pictures off of it first, is there any method of getting them off via TWRP or something? They are all on Internal storage so i can't just take them out and plug them into a computer. I've tried MTP transfer from it but it only allows me to do my SD card, is there some sort of ADB command or something to extract all of my internal storage or a certain folder to my computer? Anything at all? Even besides that?
Yes the internal storage is accessible, not messed up or encrypted or anything. Just don't know how to get the files off it without having a ROM (can't flash any until i RUU).
Don't use an RUU (yet)?
If you can get any ROM to boot, use that ROM to get your pictures. THEN run the RUU. If you can get to a working recovery, this should be doable.

No ROM will boot, or install, adb will not function properly, TWRP reboots randomly, half of the functions in TWRP are causing it to reboot, MultiROM has a couple partitons I think never got removed, it's quite bad. At the moment I am totally stumped at what to do to even consider 'fixing' this besides an RUU. I'm not stupid when it comes to fixing my phone either, I normally have minimal issues when fixing things but this one is just above my level in actually fixing it rather than just doing the simple way out (RUU). Oh and I can't flash anything via TWRP.
Soo in short I just want to get the pictures...then RUU. I have backups on my SD card to restore and if I can get the pictures then I'll already have a full internal storage backup & sd backup to restore if needed. The pics are the only things not fully backed up, i.e why I need/want them. Probably best I do an RUU anyways, I can't uninstall MultiROM to get rid of the partitions so the RUU seems to be my best bet.

Ouch. Unfortunately, a screwed up partition map is probably only recoverable by fully wiping the internal storage. I inadvertently did something similar to my daughter's Nexus 7, and the only resolution was reloading a factory image from fast boot. (since Google doesn't seem to do RUUs)
Maybe one of the Multi-ROM devs has a better solution?

It's more like I have 4 little partitions for the other ROM's that won't get removed unless I do the RUU anyways or at least get the phone functional enough to where I can remove them with MultiROM but as I said I just want the pictures and to rid of it. Once I get them or if I can/can't then i'll fully wipe it and probably do the RUU too. Just want to at least TRY to get them, if not it's whatever but worth a shot.
Oh and the 4 little partitions thing, thats only from what I know of how MultiROM works, I don't actually know 100% for sure if it really creates partitions. Quite sure it does though
Try
adb pull /data/media/0/
it should pull all files from internal storage
make sure you mount data in TWRP first before you run the command
or
you can try to flash TWRP as linked in my sig, it can mount your internal storage as MTP
or
search for qtADB ... it's a pc-android explorer... then browse to data/media/0/
you can copy whatever that you need with its copy function
(you need to mount data in TWRP first)

Okay thank the spaghetti monster of doom that last one worked, got the pictures extracted safely. I tried getting my entire internal storage just in hopes I could 100% clone my old setup but it just keeps glitching and won't do it. Either way got what I wanted, attempting an RUU now . Thanks for the help!
Oh and just for informational purposes, I was already using his TWRP and that ADB command just did what every other thing I normally do in TWRP does, rebooted my phone after 2 seconds of it. It did manage to get 2 files but they weren't even what I wanted. Maybe if I did it more specifically it would've worked but oh well.
Updaaaate!: Got everything back as it should be via RUU, Nandroid Backup, & backed up Internal Storage from 8/11/14 along with the Pictures you helped me get!
