Hi everyone,
i have Galaxy note 10.1 2014 edition, I have poor GPS signal and wanna plug external GPS antenna. I don t know if its possible i found one free plug on board which located top right under the speaker and look like SMB plug , I have 2 questions about it.
1) Is that plug available for GPS antenna?
2) if first question's answer "yes", what kind of connector is it ( SMB , MCX or smth else)
i have the photo but cant post the link because i am newbie in forum ( must have 10 post to send a link)

I think that you should check all other possible causes - permissions, configuration of gps.conf, test GPS functionality on open space with data on via tethering and lastly if stock antenna is connected properly, not damaged in any way.
If you really want to improve GPS reception IMO better would be standalone GPS unit paired via bluetooth with tablet.

I was having a problem with that also.
It didn't matter if I was in the middle of an empty field running around with the thing in the air like an idiot, the internal antenna was too weak.
Now if I was in the car, the thing would pick up a signal no problem.
After looking into alternatives - like an external antenna - I settled on this:
I just picked up a BT-359W Bluetooth GPS Receiver for 85- Euro new.
The only difference between the BT-359W & BT-359S is the design on the top.
I made sure the battery was 100% charged before I turned it on (old habits die hard) and after spending 5-10 minutes trying to configure the Bluetooth on the HTC P3300 - I am a newbie when it comes to this new technology - it was able to get 3 satellites while I was in the house right away.
The thing is very small also - 82 mm x 41 mm x 13.4 mm (Inches: 3.22" x 1.61" x 0.52").
I would have to say that this is a great alternative to a wired antenna.
Here is a review I read before making my final decision: GlobalSat BT-359 Bluetooth GPS receiver review

You missed the point completely.
The internal antenna was too weak.
When I am in a car, I have no problems at all getting a satellite fix.
The reason I bought an external GPS receiver is because I am not in a car all the time when using the GPS.

That doesn't make sense at all, it should be the other way around. Inside a car the signal will allways be weaker than outside, because of the surrounding metal.

completely agree, what you're saying doesnt make sense unless you were in some very dense forest with all the trees in leaf, but you say you were in the middle of a field.
im about to install tomtom on my orbit so will see what its like as i used to use a bt gps reciever on my xda IIi
hello
i have installed tomtom ver 5
and i have to say that it works a treat..
it takes about a minute to register on the GPS but it does work well form inside the car aswell as outside the car.
The settings i use are
GPS Program Com 4
GpS Hardware Com 0
and keep the 3rd tab option checked ie pocket pc controlling access
On the GPS setting in tomtom select other NMEA device and choose Com 4
First time use will take about 5 mins so keep the phone still then after should take less than a minute.....
hope it helps
Tomtom not working
I have tried endlessly without success to get the tomtom on my orbit working. It keeps saying 'no gps device found'. When I select 'Other NMEA device' i dont see com port 4 as one of the options, i see com2 and serial (i think).
I thought maybe the software was not properly installed when i read about the com 4 thing and so uninstalled it. However I bought the phone (brand new) with the tomtom from ebay but now i cannot reload the tomtom as it keeps crashing during install.
Any ideas on what next I can do
have you changed the hardware port to com 4 first?
start>settings>connections>gps
then on first page GPS settings it asks what program port form the drop down list select com 4, that should then enable TomTOm GPS settings to display com 4.
remember once you have selected settings connect your phone to PC via actie sync and on
start>programs>quick gps
select menu and select update automatically when connected via active sync
this speeds up the process of finding the satelites and the data is usually valid for abut 3 days, so it does help to locate satelites quicker.
keep the phone still for about 5 mins and it should work..
thanks
l6cum
PS i am using TomTom 5, but the procedure should be the same

Go to mininova.org and download Tomtom Navigator 6 of it. It might take a couple of days to download sometimes. After you download follow the instructions and it is all user friendly. Hello
i just got my desire and i have some questions regarding bluetooth use.
maybe im just not finding the right menus but im a little bit stuck
so first the setup and what i have done: i have a bluetooth gps receiver and im trying to connect it to my desire.
i searched, then paired
and after that i get paired but not connected.
a) so how do i connect ? tapping on it didnt do anything and holding got me a menu to unpair the device
b) after i connect how do i create a serial port ? as i understand serial port profile should be usable on android
c) is there a way to autoconnect ?
d) are there any special menus for bluetooth other than the settings menu ?
i'm coming from winmo and im a little bit stuck here
and related to that, is there even a navigation software that can make use of a bluetooth gps receiver ? it seems at least navigon has no option to change the source
thanks in advance
I've not tried with a gps receiver, but I have to ask, why? Is the built in gps no good?

The currently available navigation software all use the Android system location services to get GPS information, and therefore do not have an option to connect to an external GPS unit.
I'm sure it a navigation solution developer could code their app to use external GPS if they so choose, as the APIs are there, but given that most Android devices have built in GPS they probably can't be bothered as it probably has limited appeal (though I do understand why some people might want it).

Dave
hmm ok that answers some of my questions. thanks
what about the adding and connecting questions ?
Dear All,
I would like to share my experience in this TMC project.
Recently I bought a Chinese GPS 100 unit to connect to my JVC KD AVX40
This has an av out in 320x240 and JVC has an AV in.
You can control the unit via touchpad.
It works correctly to my unit so I decided to get a TMC for this product.
This unit has One USB port which is in Host mode.
So Put a normal USB hub on it and it worked well with Pendrive and External Mouse
Next step, I got a FTDI USB to Rs232 device.
It has FTDI 232BM chip for UART connection it's very important to use chip like this , because of the windows ce driver
I've opened it and I removed chip called SP213EHCA.
In every RS232 there are 2 chips on the board. One is for USB to UART , and the second is for Uart To Rs232.
Because the every TMC receiver uses TTL communication which is working on 3.3v I need to "convert" the unit to USB to UART TTL only.
Obviously you can build a small circuit for this communication, but for myself it was easier to use this solution.
After I removed the Rs232 chip.
Datasheet Page 5 for picture of the pin outs.
You can download it from the FTDI website
The Tmc Receiver pin out is :
Pin definition:
Pin1 Vcc: 5V +- 10%
Pin2 TX: 3.3V TTL level, TMC data output.
Pin3 RX: 3.3V TTL level, receive commands.
Pin4 GND <-- It's not ground It's 5V !!!
Pin5 GND (for mini-USB only)
I soldered a mini USB mother type connector to the chip legs:
PIN2 goes to chip leg 24
PIN3 goes to chip leg 25
PIN5 goes to chip leg 17
So after this I connected the Royaltek TMC unit to my "hacked Rs232" board.
I put the "hacked rs232" to hub and I used a USB mini usb cable for power the tmc unit, so I connect the cable to hub and after that to the tmc.
After this I used this driver for windows ce 5.0
You can download it from the ftdi web site
I have to use mortscript which copy a self made reg file to the registry and copy the ftdi dll to /windows/ folder
Reg:
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\USB\LoadClients\1027_24577]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\USB\LoadClients\1027_24577\Default]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\USB\LoadClients\1027_24577\Default\Default]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\USB\LoadClients\1027_24577\Default\Default\FTDI_DEVICE]
"DLL"="ftdi_ser"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\USB\LoadClients\Default\Default\255]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\USB\LoadClients\Default\Default\255\FTDI_DEVICE]
"DLL"="ftdi_ser"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\USB\ClientDrivers\FTDI_DEVICE]
"Index"=dword:00000001
"InitialIndex"=dword:00000001 <--- This is for which com port to use 1...9
"Dll"="ftdi_ser"
"Prefix"="COM"
"Version"="1.0.2.11"
"ActiveSyncSetting"=dword:0003e880
"LatencyTimer"=dword:00000010
"DeviceArrayIndex"=dword:00000000
This reg file is directly uses COM PORT 1 (It was free in my device )
After this I created a very small circuit which holds the usb power for 20sec
parallely my reg and driver is installing in this time.
When I reached 20sec My Hive based Windows Registry will recognize the FTDI device and there are no pop up meassegas appear ....
IGO recognized the TMC device hardware
The reason I write this how to , because I read so many forums ,and web pages to find a solution for this , but i didn't find anything.
GNS is providing a TMC receiver for CAR PC but with a prolific based USB to UART chip, and the ARM based cpu is not understanding the driver
Ough I forget the tmc receiver what used:
Royaltek RTA-3000

I got the same JVC stereo, how can I unlock for multizone DVD? Thank!
If i understand it correctly that you mean, you want to unlock the dvd region limitation.
I didn't unlocked it, but the main problem, that the unlock lock status is came from the dvd FW, which is not possible to reach it, via this unit. I searched for the web, and JVC also, for some FW update. There isn't any. So from my side i say it's not possible in easy way.
I have tested this solution and since half year aho its working fine under -20 to +50 so it is a solution.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Compatibility
Also tested with FT2232H
This soultion is working , only bug that because of the dual uart the windows device pop up a notification for the second uart driver.
Also working.
Not working with Moxa chip.
Not working with Prolific PL-2303. ( Because the driver for the chip is not going to get open com port in wince 5 :S )
It seems that the only solution is the FTDI chip.
I've made a test with bluepanter and Wayteq and a very old Blaupunkt.
Solution is worked when I changed the usb mode to Host in wince.
It's seems for the blepanter and the wayteq it make not so much sense bacuse you could buy their original accessories.
For the blaupunkt is okay.
Also this could be okay for the 1-2 din chinese gps. Needs to be tested.
Reception improving
I had issue with the tmc reception.
So the solution is make a fm Y cable, and share the outdoor antenna to the head unit and to the tmc receiver.
After the installation, I realised that the reception was not so good, because I miss calculated with the phantom power to my roof antenna, after the phantom power installation everything went fine.
I got reception where I never had it before. TMC news downloading time improved as well.
Take care with the phantom power because it could kill the TMC receiver, use only one way adapter !
hi,
many many thanks for you thread...i had some questions...
i have bought an Dynavin DVN-MC2000 and this unit is without TMC but it have an GPS-In Mother-Usb cable...i think this goes directly to the wince5.0 system.
Where did you buy your RT-3000 and do you have the complete name of the FTDI Modul?!
Maybe we can develop a solution together i could make fotos from my open DVN-MC2000 if it helps
Maybe a ohoto would be great.
I bought the tmc unit in hungary in an avarage shop.
About ftdi i had one in my work desk. But it doesnt matter the meaing is it should any type which is supporting from the wince ftdi driver side. See ftdi web.

Hello all!!
I've been reading the post and I have to congratulate you, very interesting!
If you do not mind I'll use this thread because I want to ask you a question, I haven´t found any response in any expert forum.
I have a problem with my car radio. It is a chenese radio with GPS and TMC integrated.
From the beginning the TMC worked correctly but It had problems with the GPS. It didn´t work properly (may be the driver was wrong or it was bad installed on the WIN CE5). The provider din´t give me a solution and I found a forum in France. There someone sent me an European WIN CE 5 ROM with the GPS installed a working properly. The problem is that this guy didnt have any ROM with the TMC driver integrated and now I dont have it installed.
My actual state is: WIN CE + GPS HW (installed and working) + TMC HW (not insalled)
My question is:
How could I install the TMC in my radio WIN CE5? The HW exists but my WIN CE 5 does not have the drivers and of course the IGO can not find it.
Thank you very much!
pd: sorry about my english!!!

From the first i need to know what kind of tmc chip do you have. Royaltek/GNS and after that we can get closer to the problem. Qhit the upper sokution you can put in the driver if we will figure out the chip manufacturel.

I am sure that the integrated chip is GNS tipe.
The only thing that can hapen if we install a wrong driver is that it would not work, wouldnt it?
But the other things would work good...
thank you!

I found something maybe from your IGO8 folder is missing one file called gpstmc.dll
Check this forum

I will check it.
Anyway I think that I need the driver for TMC receiver. I have the HW but it is not installed. Do you know were could I find TMC drivers for Win CE 5? with them the problem would be solved-install and the IGO would take it automatically (I had it installed the first time, but the GPS didnt work).
Hi friends
Since about 2 months I can no longer get gps fix with my HTC Desire. My 2 year old kids love it as much as I do, but unfortunelly they let it drop in the ground too often.
I'm afraid that the gps antenna is damaged, because the fact is that the gps really isn't working anymore.
A few years ago I used a windows mobile 5 phone with TomTom, and it accepted an external bluetooth antenna as wel as the integrated gps module.
Unfortunelly, TomTom is not suported on android. Do you know any android navigation software that accepts a bluetooth external antenna so that I can keep using my desire as a gps device?
Thanks in advance.
Hello,
are you sure it's the antenna's fault? Maybe some settings are off (i.e. you're turning on 3G instead of GPS?). What sort of external antenna do you want to plug into it?

Hi
I´m not sure if the problem is really the antenna, but for sure it is not about the settings. I have this phone for about 1,5 years, so I know what to turn on.
Have already made factory settings and reconfigurated everything.
I know that the old phones without gps modules could be bluetotth paired with an external gps antenna. At least the TomTom supported this option. The question is to know if any android navigation software supports it now.

I found some very usefull information here:

Already ordered the gps bluetooth antenna. I will post the results later.

I'm using Navigon for now on my One X and i would like to be able to move to a stationary car gps soon.
My question now is, how can i or is it possible to in some way with ANY car gps move or use my contacts addresses

To me it seems like a long shot, but i feel i must ask before i buy this new gps for the car.

Im sure its possible mate.
First off you need to ensure you buy a SatNav with BlueTooth, and Address Book capabilities.
You should then be able to transfer your contacts (over bluetooth) into your satnav's address book.
Also, its a long shot but if you don't get a SatNav with bluetooth, but it has a mini USB cable, then you could plug it in, mount it as a hard drive, and copy your contacts from your phone to your SatNav.
Hope this helps.
Edit: Sorry, misunderstood your question.
