XZ2 Compact APNs Locked? - Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact Questions & Answers

I've been using my XZ2 Compact on Verizon since it was released. No issues. Switched to Total Wireless today, and my internet will not work. Voice and text works fine. Total Wireless operates on Verizon's network. This SIM card works fine when I put it into a Google Pixel.
My APN settings are locked (there is no "+" button). Automatically updating the APN settings adds a Verizon profile that is totally different than the one that automatically popped up on my Pixel. I can delete the existing APN profile, but I cannot add one. I've restarted the phone many times, both while connected to WiFi and not. I get internet back immediately if I reboot with the Verizon SIM.
I've searched around the interwebs, and I cannot find anything. Any help would be appreciated.

I use another mvno and the part that's most important is 'apn name' when using an mvno mine has to be set to say reseller... Have you tried pressing download internet settings? That usually fixes the problem and bring back the plus or allow you to manually change the apn setting after it downloads it. Take it you aren't using the dual sim as sometimes switching the Sims around brings back the apn menu.

Thanks for the insight. I have tried downloading settings several times, it just bring back the "VZWINTERNET" APN.
It is a single SIM US model.
I have not tried renaming the APN. That is the one thing I can edit on it.

Does total wireless publish the apn settings? Sometimes ios/android uses slightly different settings. Just look at what apn name should be, and try to match it up..

I'll try that as soon as I get home, thanks!

I can't believe it! Changing APN Name to "TRACFONE.VZWENTP" is all that was needed. Thanks a bunch!

T-Mobile UK-OneX-Tethering

I have just started a T-Mobile contract in the UK on the Full Monty plan that gives unlimited data and includes tethering.
The handset used is unbranded and unlocked but I couldnt tether with it for some reason, either via wifi hotspot or USB Tether. The internet on the handset worked fine.
I couldnt call 150 customer service as that dept shut at 10pm so had a play with the apn's.
The three APN's set up as default are all locked and uneditable so my plan was to edit the broadband one in someway.
So, I copied all the settings, set up the APN's as another network, deleted them and added the three default APN's manually.
Once I did this, tethering started to work, with no actual change to any of the settings.
Just a heads up if anyone else comes across this and a fix that worked for me.
Steve
Yep rename apn to consumer broadband, people with many HTC s will known this, glad you figured it out

Many thanks for this post. Would you mind expanding / elaborating on the above steps at all? Not sure how to do this. Have tried creating new APNs with the same settings with no luck. Any pointers much appreciated, thanks.

Yeah - I'd like easier steps too listed please - and thanks for sharing!
I made a mistake in my original post.
Seems that what was happening is that I was using the T-mobile Orange signal and not been able to tether. After messing with the APN's the phone went back to T-Mobile and so started to work. Nothing to do with the messing with the APN's
But, what does seem to work, is to re-create the APN's as they were, but on the first entry, change APN type from 'default, hipri' to 'default, hipri, dun'
That works on T-Mobile and when roaming onto Orange it seems
To do this, copy the info from all three APN's and then with the APN screen open, select menu and then 'reset to default'
This deletes the APN's and then gives you the choice of carrier to use. I used Virgin I think (doesnt matter which you use) but once the new APN(s) are there, just delete them. Then, menu and add APN.
Set up each of the APN's as they were before, except the above change (adding dun to the Apn type)

Smashing thanks. Tethering working fine now on T-Mo only, will try the solution you suggest for T-Mo/Orange when I get a chance. Much appreciated!
I don't have any problems tethering whilst on Orange on Android handsets. I'm not on Full Monty though, if that makes any difference. It is impossible to tether on an iPhone whilst on T-MobileOrange though. The hotspot option is just greyed out. As soon as you switch back to TMobile you get the option to switch it on again. Orange 3G is utter crap anyway. Unfortunately I pretty much roam onto it whether I like it or not at my new address.
as usual i'm stumbling at the first block...
'copy the info from all three APN's'...
when i click on any of them all the settings are greyed out, i wonder what i'm doing wrong?
edit:
sussed and working fine now
Just about to do this.
Out of curiosity what is the Broadband APN for??
Is it a tethering only APN? e.g. Now tethering is removed from NEW Full Monty contract connections (of which i have one) If i tether, thus using that APN, will they be able to see that and have a go.
Or now tethering is removed will that APN not work?

I reckon tethering will work…. but will get charged…. and its likely to be expensive.
Seems a strange decision on TMO's part TBH, as they share part of the backhaul with 3 UK you would think that they could cope with extra bandwidth needed.
I assume the broadband APN is for tethering but as I say, if used then it will be billed. Just cos the handset/set up can do it, doesnt meant it wont go past the billing systems.

[Q] Cannot set APN (T-Mobile US)

I inserted my microsim card into the machiine and connected to Wifi. However it did not automatically download carrier's mobile network setting as a lot webpages described. So I tried to input APN settings manually. But as soon as I input everything and hit save, it went back to the original APN setting window without showing the newly added APN EVEN IF I selected Save.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Yeah me too. I think this is happens when you type in a username without PW and try to save. (In my case the APN for MMS)
The APN for Internet, where no Username is required worked, without Problems.
After that i downloaded it automatically.

Ha, turned out to be a defective sim card. The staff took my old big sim card and made this malfunctioning micro sim card. What a luck!

Can't connect to ATT network, even after RMA

I can't seem to connect to the ATT network, new sim didn't work so after a long talk with google CS they RMA'd me a new 3 XL, popped the sim in and I still can't connect to the ATT network! Manually switching from ATT NEXTGEN to WAP didn't work either. Everything is up to date, I cannot figure out what's going on. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

You are positive the SIM is functional?
Have you tried changing APN settings?
I dont recall ATT APN settings I have been on ATT for many years.
But when I was I modified the settings to improve performance.
A google search should return results easily.

The sim is brand new and yes I've tried three different APN settings I found from googling. I'm at a total loss.

I suggest you take the phone into an AT&T location and have them provision a new SIM for you. Don't leave the store until you have a signal. Remind them this is the RMA unit not working after the first phone was returned. It's not the phone.

Brand new and functional are not the same.
I have had a dead sim out of the box.
Which is why i asked.

I watched the ATT rep try five different sims and none of them worked, this is absolutely insane.

Compatible Data Carriers in Canada

So I just got the phone yesterday, and I noticed that data on it didn't work, but calling and texting did. My data plan is under Rogers, so I went to a Rogers Wireless store, and they couldn't make data work, as it apparently couldn't connect to their APN. I was wondering if this was a software issue, where it wouldn't accept an APN from any service provider, or if the phone just doesn't work with Roger's data specifically?
Also, if anyone in BC has gotten the data working on their Red Magic 5G, how did you do that, and what's your service provider?
Try again. Im on Videotron in Quebec, took me several tries to finally to get to save the apn. Roaming data for Videotron is on Rogers network. Tested and working in Ontario.
Although, carriers in BC might use other lte bands. ?
Working without any hassle or need to setup the APN configuration with Public Mobile on their LTE network.
There were some mentioning the APN setup page isn't clear, especially is you're using dark mode.
Rogers APN settings should be readily available so you can edit/input yourself.
Edit: found this:

You need to use an app called MyNewAPN to add the APN settings. For whatever reason you can't do it through the APN menu.

MyNewAPN? I can't find an app of that exact name in the google play store. Could you link me to a page where I can download it?

Unusual Solution for APN settings that can't be edited normally

If you have a phone which needs APN settings modified for it to function fully this may be of interest. In many cases you can simply go into Settings > Network > Network and Internet > Mobile Data and add an APN or edit an existing APN.
However in some cases you may find as I did that the SIM / phone combination does not allow you to edit or add APN settings. If you have root their may be ways to edit the APN configuration files directly. However with Android 10 and some other situations that becomes difficult if not impossible. In my case even the phone network service support could not update the APN setting. I knew what the APN settings needed to be but since I had an unrooted Android 10 device (a smartwatch in this case but it will work for phones also) I could not get access to folders to edit the configuration and it is unlikely it would have been saved due to Android 10's read only system partition.
On this device I had cellular phone calls and text working but NO Mobile data. I could see the APN settings were not correct for the service I was on for Mobile data to work. I tried everything for days to edit but it was grayed out and I could not add a new APN. In the process of pursuing a solution I found that putting in a different SIM (in this case a Textnow SIM for their new free phone service through Sprint) that I could edit the APN settings when that SIM was inserted. So you will need to find a SIM card that will allow you to edit settings.
Now the real trick involves hot swapping SIM cards so if you aren't comfortable with that then you won't be able to do this. There seems to be differing opinions on this but no phones or watches or SIM cards were damaged when I tried this.
What I did was edit the other SIM by changing the APN settings. Then when I hit the back key it said something to the effect the settings were not allowed on this. At that point I pulled out the SIM with the device ON. I then put back in the SIM for my service provider with the device still on. The settings showed up now on my formerly uneditable SIM ! Mobile data now worked fine. I
I had a second device I wanted to put the SIM in (identical to the first device) hoping the settings would still be there but they were not. Apparently communication between the SIM card and the phone gets APN settings transferred to the phone or watch. So I wanted to do the same procedure on this second device. In attempting that it did not seem to be working the same at first. However after trying for about an hour it finally worked on the second device also. So persistence pays off if it doesn't work at first. I kept turning things on and off in the Mobile data settings, rebooting and playing around with developer options. I wish I could say exactly what got it to work on the second device or why it just worked on the first device the first try but I haven't been able to pin down the variable which achieved success.
But the conclusion is that is you can't edit your APN settings normally you may have success with this method if you keep at it a bit. Good luck and please post here if you have success with this method and share any insights into how you got it to work for your device.
I know I'm a little late your one man party here. I just wanted to finally clear the air on this once and for all. So that every one can edit any and every so called "locked APN" for whatever carrier and or devices. So here we go. First off long time telecom cyber security engineer.
Step 1: Find all the APN's that your specific Carrier used for your Sim card and device. Write them down or screen shot them. Some carriers and devices may only use 1, others 2-3 +.
Step 2: Click and add another APN just as the 1 that is locked on the device. Option for option identical and click save. If you have only 1 APN. It should have now saved, unlocked the APN and you should have 2 identical. You can now go back and edit the APN that you just created. If not or you can't it usually means you have more APN's to add before they will unlock. Ultimately allowing for deletion. Have patience as this may require a little time of trial and error. Good luck all and have fun with it.
