I have some troubles when I was rooting the PIXEL 2 XL
I installed Android P Beta, but when I installed TWRP so I could install Magisk, the phone rebooted and showed me this message:
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Supported API:3

I chose the two options but the PIXEL 2 XL just repeats the same message over and over.
Please, I need support to complete the factory reset
Any suggestions welcome
Can you get into stock recovery from the bootloader? If so, try sideloading the latest 8.1 OTA.

Yes, I can to enter the initial boot mode , but when I choose "Recovery mode", the cellphone returns of same menu that means:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please, I need to obtain factory reset of the Pixel 2 XL phone.
Regards,
Download the full factory image, boot into fastboot mode and flash it with the flash all bat file. Edit the file first and remove the -w from the file so you don't wipe data.
Edit: Actually leave the - w in there, you need to wipe data.
Also, sometimes of you reboot a few times with that message it will just wipe it for you.
Thanks for your support

Nope. You need to type "fastboot devices". ADB is when you are in the system... fastboot is when you are in the bootloader.
since you can get into bootloader, just reflash the original boot.img from factory image zip, then do fastboot boot <twrp-filename.img>
if you want to actually install twrp, you have to fastboot boot twrp, then install twrp from that temporary twrp, not directly flash twrp from fastboot.

Just applied the 4.0.2 OTA update to my GSM Galaxy Nexus and after the reboot, even though i type in the correct password, my phone wont decrypt.
I read on android forums people with the 4.0.3 OTA having the same problems.
How can i reset my phone? How does Odin work? Somehow i am stuck at the screen with the android and his open chest
ok i got odin workin, needed to install the android sdk, wiping my phone now
Please note: YOU WILL LOSE ALL DATA
everything seems ok, i got into odin mode like this:
-connect your GN with usb to your computer
-start with power + volume down
-use volume up / down to select recovery mode
-confirm by pressing power
-you will see an android with a triangle
-press power and volume
-select factory reset
-confirm with power
-reboot
this worked for me only after i installed the android sdk, before that somehow i was stuck at the android with his chest open and couldnt select anything because somehow my device wasnt recognized
hope this helps
This also caught me out. Not happy.
Method I used (posted on OTA thread) worked without installing SDK:
Power off
Hold Volume + , volume - and power
You should get a green android image with the body opened with "Start" on the screen
Press Down till you get to recovery mode
Press power
Phone will reboot
You will then get same image of android (smaller) with red warning triangle
Wait a minute or two and then press volume + and power (not sure exactly what I did for this maybe it's just waiting)
Use volume down to select wipe data/factory reset and hit power
Select Yes - delete all user data and hit power
Once done select reboot system now and hit power
You are now back to zero and can start again.

The only way to decrypt an encrypted phone is using fastboot. Fastboot is a developer tool that runs on your computer. You need to download the full Google factory image or a full rom, and flash all of the files to your phone using fastboot.
CWM and other recovery software will not be able to factory reset the device.

What is the command you have to type in prompt to do this?
I am also having trouble decrypting my phone. Factory reset it a couple of times and it is still encrypted.
Hi.
Apologies if this is a very naive question, I am not particularly familiar with mods, roms and so forth.
I have rooted another phone in the past, but that is all.
The situation:
- Samsung Galaxy Nexus
- Not rooted/unlocked. Stock android automatically updated to the latest Android version supported
- Android developer option NOT set in settings
- Stuck in a boot loop: boots to android and then after a few seconds reboots, so no time to do anything
- Not sure how it happened, I had it for years, it was in my pocket and suddenly started doing that.
- Android fastboot and recovery loads up no problem
- I have tried anything I could find online to fix it: deleted cache, rebooted in safe mode, removed battery for 10 hours
- Nothing seems to fix it, it keeps rebooting
- I want to try a factory reset, but my family photos are in the phone
- Google synch seems to have stopped functioning for this device a year ago, all my 2016-17 photos and videos are locked in the phone.
Admitting there is nothing to do about the loop problem:
Is there any way I can copy photos and videos via usb while in recovery mode?
After I will reset the phone via recovery menu, hoping it will fix it. IF that does not fix it, I will flash another rom in. But I really do not want to wipe my data before backing them up.
I am assuming the answer is no, you cannot access the internal memory in fastboot/recovery unless your phone is rooted.
But I would like an expert opinion before I resolve to wipe one year of photos and videos which I will regret losing.
@mcaldo DON'T DO FACTORY RESET, EVERYTHING WILL BE LOST
which recovery are you using..?
if it's TWRP, then it's easy..
- boot into TWRP recovery
- go to "Mount" tab
- find "enable/disable MTP" button at lower options.. (enable it )
then connect your phone to that PC, where you always connected in past, ( to eliminate driver installation stage, all drivers will be preinstalled )
Regards

By recovery, I meant 'android system recovery'
It gives me the following options:
reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from USB drive
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
Is any of the above useful?
Unfortunately, I do not have any alternative recovery software available
Edit: Googling I found this: "Apply update from ADB: The Android Debug Bridge allows you to plug your device into your PC and issue commands from there. "
If I can issue commands through ADB, perhaps there is a command to copy data from my phone to my computer?

Yes, you can copy through adb commands..
Get and extract Minimal ADB and Fastboot from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790
From PC, run CMD to extracted folder directory.
Connect phone to PC, go to update from ADB(in recovery),
Type "adb device" , it will show serial number and connected..
Then "adb pull /sdcard " (if you know particular directory of data then write it like /sdcard/photos,, otherwise writing /sdcard will copy all folders from your phone. )
it will start copying to same adb folder ..

Thanks for the advice.
I followed the instructions closely, and nearly got there.
adb devices returns
#serialnumber sideload
so all good
but adb pull /sdcard returns
adb: error connect failed: closed
I tried several other commands with no success
kill-server and start-server work fine but do not solve the problem
adb usb returns
error closed
So, I am starting thinking that the problem is in the bootloader being locked.
However, if I unlock it, it will be wipe all my data, I understand?
Googling about it, I found this:
The behavior is status-by-design. Your stock recovery is not designed to grant shell access. Your only choice here is to somehow manage to flash a custom recovery. – Firelord Dec 30 '15 at 14:19

To achieve something similar to what @FireLord suggested: TWRP can be booted on many devices without being installed. For that, find a matching image, then boot to the bootloader and run fastboot boot twrp.img. Btw: you can check with fastboot devices resp. adb devices whether a device is visible to the corresponding tool. – Izzy♦ Jul 8 '16 at 19:40
So I understand one could boot TWRP without installing it, but I am not sure if that means I could do that with the bootloader locked?
I found WugFresh nexus root toolkit which seems to do that, among many other things, but again it warns that the phone must be unlocked (using the android build "Android *.* Any", I did not know what else to choose, not sure if that makes any difference as for locked/unlocked requirements)
EDIT: my fastboot screen reads "FASTBOOT STATUS - Failbootloader locked" as the last line, when trying to run TWRP without installing.
Yes, unlocking bootloader will wipe everything..
What actually you did ? Why it went into bootloop ???
I have also read that about boot into TWRP without installing.. and it worked for many one without unlocking bootloader... Don't know why not on GNex.

A very good question, to which I have no answer, unfortunately.
The phone was used by my wife for 2 years and then by me for other 2. I recently changed the battery.
Never rooted or unlocked. No unusual apps installed. I am a very basic user, as you might have guessed, and being my only phone at the moment, I really would not risk experimenting with it.
It went very slow over the last 4 months, so I was planning to reset it.
I put in my coat pocket for a few hours, when I took it out it had a train ticked stuck to the screen and was quite warm and on the lock screen. It froze, so I took the battery out and restarted it. From then on it is stuck in a loop, not sure why really.

That's good to know. I'll research more than.
It seems there might be a problem with the fastboot drivers on my computer, even selecting them from device manager did not work. Win7 refuses to install. The ADB drivers in theory work fine though.
If you have done nothing modification to system, then wiping data should work, but i have doubt if it also wipes personal data too, on TWRP it wipes data excepting /data/media/ which contains all personal data.. but don't know about wiping on stock recovery...
I hope you will find solution as soon as possible..
Regards.
PS. I can install stock recovery and try wiping /data.. and check what things get wiped.. but i need little time for that experiment...

Looking at google's documentation on the nexus:
You can remove data from your Pixel phone or Nexus device by resetting it to factory settings. Resetting to factory settings is also known as formatting the device or doing a "hard reset".
If you're factory resetting your device to fix an issue, make sure that you've tried all other troubleshooting options first. Find out how to troubleshoot your issue.
Important: Performing a factory reset will erase all data from the device.

It would seem that indeed all data will be removed.
This point, I will research a bit more into drivers, in case that is what it's preventing adb pull from working.
I really need a working phone, so if that fails I will hard reset, then unlock, root, flash in an alternative bootloader and perhaps a rom, and put ubuntu touch in dual boot. That will hopefully prevent me from loosing data in the future.
Sorry, this is out of topic to my question, but, , could you suggest any stable, solid rom for the nexus?
I read good things of CM12, and I ran into one which seemed to do to quite well with split windows, but I do not remember the name right now.
EDIT: I remember the name of the rom now, it's https://omnirom.org/about/
A last question if you can..
I tried to solve my boot loop problem by sideloading an update from google (maguro yakju yakju-jwr66y-factory-4cadea65.zip)
It loaded it fine but then failed because the installation it says it is not signed.
Basically, being a stock bootloader recovery from Samsung, it will only sideload OTAs from samsung, not the stock ones from google..
I cannot find the samsung ones anywhere, not for the nexus anyway, just the newer devices..
By any chance do you know where I could download proper Samsung OTA zip updates for the nexus?
Well, I talked with an android developer who confirmed that, unless you have a friend working in criminal forensic technology or similar, there is no way to get around a lock on this phone to pull data out.
So, sadly, I have wiped my phone by unlocking it, flashed TWRP and then omnirom with gapps.
My photos are gone, including a bunch of stuff my kid had made and asked me to photograph for safeeping. Very safe indeed
He kept asking me why they make the lock like that, instead of allowing some kind of password, perhaps he has a point.
So, it is quite unlikely that somebody who knows as little as I did will ever read this *before* finding themselves in the same situation.
But if you do, back up your data, unlock and flash TWRP, clockworks or some alternative, and thank yourself if and when disaster strikes..
@mcaldo wiping data/factory reset in STOCK RECOvERY will wipe everything... There is very few chances to get backup...
And yeah i found something interesting..
You can flash system.img.. only system files will be corrected not anything else..
Get appropriate zip from here : https://developers.google.com/android/images
Now take system.img to ADB/Fastboot folder ( i assume you know how it works )
Just go "Fastboot flash system system.img"
It will rewrite system partition..
Another one:
See downloads on this thread..
One says NON-WIPE, if you want me to try that zip, i will again require time for that. See here : https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-nexus/general/guide-restore-to-stock-unbrick-galaxy-t2065470

This is really a note to myself as a guide to convert out of box x727 to Linerage OS 14. I have converted 4 phones so far and I just wanted to leave a note for the next time. I have used the below method for going from 18s, 19s, and 21s. (I believe it also works for 23s. I think I have done it before.)
Steps below are for experts only with the usual warnings about bricking and warranty. (Always check for connection with devices command in both adb and fastboot - if you find adb working but not fastboot, change out the USB driver on you computer)
I wrote the steps down from my memory so let me know if you find something missing.
Files you need to hunt down :
emmc image
twrp image
los14 zip
ogapp zip
supersu zip
1) Boot up a new phone with no account and no wifi.
2) Set developer mode and enable USB debugging.
3) Connet USB and give permission on the phone.
4) adb reboot bootloader
5) fastboot flash aboot emm..xxx
5a)*reboot into fastboot by holding down power and vol- buttons.
6) fastboot oem unlock-go
7) fastboot flash recovery twrp..xxx
8) jump to recovery by pressing power and vol+
from twrp (if asked for password, just ignore)
9)make a back up if you would like to go back
10) mount system
11) format data (in the wipe section) and wipe cache and system
from adb
12) adb push los.zip, ogapp.zip, and supersu.zip to /sdcard/
from twrp
13) install los, ogapp, and supersu
14) boot system with no twrp install
Done. Phone should boot twice and will take some time to come up first time.

If you have a specific question about a certain step or files, I can answer them for you but the guide is about as detailed as I want to make.
If you are comfortable with ADB, Fastboot, and TWRP, then the above guide should be detailed enough to get the job done.
If you are not, then I would advise not attempting the conversion since there is a good chance of bricking the phone.
And by the way, unlocking the bootloader will erase all the user data on the phone.

Why the emmc image? Is it just for permanently unlocked bootloader? And if yes then is there a reason I would need unlocked bootloader after I flash recovery?

Of 6 or 7 times I have tried oem unlock-go, only once did it work. Other times, I had to flash emmc first in order to unlock. You can try oem unlock-go first and see if it works for you.
The other thing to consider is if the flashed recovery will remain when you reboot without having flashing emmc first.
Good summary of steps. I found it was necessary to reboot the bootloader after flashing emmc_appsboot.mbn, though (as per this post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=71566961&postcount=203). Just did it on a new phone last night.

You can Use OTG. I could not get a OTG, so I did flash Recovery 3.0.3 v6 because the 3.0.2 does not have support for Adb or MTP via Recovery. Once being on recovery your connect your movil to the PC and it appear like Drive, then you copy Your Rom, SU or anything else.
I have a GT-i9250 its stuck on the X boot screen with the colours changing.
I think the bootloader is unlocked when you turn it on it shows the unlocked padlock.

As first simple step, enter in recovery and wipe only cache and dalvik, than reboot.
Stuck on the multicoloured X on startup for long time.
Important Data is Phone Numbers Pictures Videos Messages.
I went into recovery done wipe cache phone restarted but same problem still same problem stuck on the multicoloured cross.
For recovery mode when the green android appeared I had to hold the power button and volume up button to get options.
I have an OTG cable and USB stick.
I believe it may be a software problem.
I need to try to flash this GT-i9250 without deleting any data on the phone surely there must be a non wipe firmware method I do have a non wipe file but I dont dare try it just waiting for more feedback and see what happens.
Im not sure what ROM ive got on here right now baseband and rest of the details are above it may be 4.2.2 not sure can you tell from details above?
Appreciate your reply Kerpert.
Thank you.

Your bootloader is unlocked. You could boot it into bootloader/fastboot mode, flash TWRP recovery, then reboot into recovery and save your photos and videos at least.

Have you a custom ROM? Which one and which version?
If you have lock state unlocked, flash the twrp recovery, download it from
https://dl.twrp.me/maguro/
Copy the custom recovery into the directory where you have kept the adb and fastboot files,
type the following command to install the custom recovery image onto your Nexus device
fastboot flash recovery <recovery_image_file.name>
fastboot reboot-fastboot
Click to collapse
connect the pendrive via OTG cable
use up/down volume to select recovery mode and press power
in recovery mount all the partitions,
go into backup
select system, boot, data
set storage to USB-OTG
start backup
Unmount the usb and disconnect from the phone
connect the stick to the pc and check if the files have been all copied.
create a folder C:\backup\
connect the Nexus via USB cable to the PC, in the prompt window type
adb pull /sdcard/ C:\backup\
Click to collapse
Now you have to reflash the same existing ROM from recovery, wipe only cache and dalvik at the end, reboot.
Hi Kerpert Im not sure what the current firmware of my phone is I think its 4.2.2 can you tell what rom I have got from the build date with the details above?
Please can you tell me exactly what to do in BABY STEPS lol so its 100% clear so I cant make a mistake! PLEASE I cant lose my IMPORTANT DATA!
I need step by step detail e.g Which version TWRP etc... and so on!
Mr Rahim Ali thank you for your response!
I really appreciate your time and effort Kerpert in trying to help me!
Thank you!
Sorry I can't understand which ROM you are using from the information upon.
Wait someother of expert that know it and maybe can give better suggests.
My idea is to do a nandroid backup and save it on pc and only after this try to bring back to life the phone, firstly by flashing the same rom you have installed (but need to identify it exactly), if it will boot, you could try with Titanium Backup to restore what you need but I'm not 100% sure it will work (you could also try to restore with TWRP, but dunnot if you can select only some apps).
Avoid to wipe DATA and INTERNAL STORAGE.
It would be very easy to find out current ROM information once you have flashed TWRP recovery. Just boot into recovery, mount system and then make a copy the file build.prop from the /system folder to USB OTG or directly to your PC. Open the file with Notepad or any other text editor. It should contain the required information.

You should have Android SDK Platform Tools installed. You can download from here.
Download the latest recovery from here or here and copy it to your hard drive e.g. in a folder called c:\maguro
You should have Universal Naked Drivers installed which you can get here.
Reboot your phone into fastboot/bootloader mode and connect it to your PC.
Provide the location where you extracted the universal naked drivers if Windows needs to install drivers.
Give the command
Code:
fastboot flash recovery c:\maguro\twrp-3.2.3-0-maguro.img
and you're done!
@Snipergti, any luck?
I Have TWRP Recovery Access!

Once I have found out I need to some how get my phone to fully turn as normal and not stay stuck on the multicoloured Cross and need all my information to be still intact i.e contacts messages call logs etc...
Please let me know what are the next steps clearly!
You have been very helpful so far!
Thank you!

Now that you do have TWRP installed, the very first thing you should do is take a full Nandroid backup and store it in a safe place that is NOT your phone, i.e., your PC or on a USB OTG drive.
The second thing you should do, if you haven't done so already, is to boot into TWRP, connect to your PC (or plug in the above-mentioned USB OTG device) and move your DCIM and/or Download (and any other pertinent) folders from your internal storage to said backup device.
Now, to proceed...
Boot into TWRP, hit the Mount button then select/check system. It is checked off/unmounted by default
then go back, hit the Advanced button and then File Manager
Browse to /system where you should see build.prop
select it, then copy to any location on your internal storage. connect to PC while still in recovery and copy the build.prop file from internal storage of phone where you pasted it to your PC
open the file in any text editor like notepad
now begins the guesswork part
slowly go through the text file and see if you can spot which version of Android you have installed.
IMM76I and IMM76K are 4.0.4
JRO03O is 4.1.1
JZO54K is 4.1.2
JDQ39 is 4.2.2
JWR66Y is 4.3
Hope this helps.
Thought I'd post my experiences in case it helps anyone else out. Following this procedure will completely wipe your phone. As usual, I take no responsibility for bricks, headaches, wasted hours at the keyboard, etc. Do your research first. Please feel free to post corrections, improvements, etc, I will edit and add them. This post assumes your bootloader is already unlocked. If you're not unlocked, make sure you read all the various articles and warnings about Xiaomi's downgrade/relock protection which can result in a brick if you flash an older build with a locked bootloader. Unlocked is the safest way to go.
I installed the Xiaomi.eu rom, but this should work for any other rom in a flashable zip, downloads for the rom, TWRP and Magisk can be found here.
Install ADB and the relevant drivers. If you're on Linux or MAC, the easiest way I know of to do this is to use Corbin's excellent tool by running a single curl command.
Download TWRP, the ROM and Magisk (optional) into the same desktop folder as your ADB installation.
Boot into Fastboot (Vol- and Power).
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
-> Boot to TWRP by holding Vol+ and Power.
Once you've booted to TWRP, change the language to English by touching the third button down in the second column (right above the button in the lower right), then touch the globe icon at on the right in the blue bar, then select English and hit the button in the lower right corner.
From the Wipe menu in TWRP, press Format Data, this will remove encryption (and wipe your phone, obviously, including everything in storage, photos, documents, everything).
While there, swipe to do a Factory Reset (which will also wipe your phone).
-> At this point, I repeated the recovery reboot procedure to be sure that TWRP would still boot, Vol+ and Power, or reboot recovery from TWRP menu. Not sure this is strictly necessary.
(For some reason, I couldn't get MTP to work in TWRP, it wouldn't copy files from the desktop. If you can get MTP to work you can simply drag and drop the rom and Magisk, otherwise you can do what I did and use ADB instead.)
From the desktop, push the rom you want to use, and Magisk, to the phone, this syntax (Linux) assumes your rom is in the adb folder, otherwise you need to provide the path:
adb push xiaomi.eu_multi_MIMix3_V10.0.12.0.PEECNFH_v10-9.zip /sdcard/Download
adb push Magisk-v17.1.zip /sdcard/Download
From TWRP, install the rom followed by Magisk from /sdcard/Download on the phone.
Reboot System.
Drink beer, preferably something hoppy and top fermented.
Note for AMD Ryzen machines: There appears to be a USB2.0 bug associated with Ryzen CPUs which prevent the fastboot flash from working. If the flashing process starts then fails, try a different machine.

Boot to TWRP using the buttons instead of the fastboot boot twrp.img command. I had the same problem. Also, make sure you're not installing the stock rom, that appears to also overwrite TWRP (that's what it looked like to me, I didn't bother to confirm for sure).

Ok, so once you've flashed TWRP, there are two recoveries on the device and booting into the stock OS changes the bootloader to boot to the MIUI recovery?
Hello, i found this very useful. thank you
Hi, I followed your instructions and I flashed TWRP, but I just can't reach it. When I give the ADB command to boot I immediately try to start in TWRP recovery mode by pressing vol up+power, but at the beginning the phone doesn't do anything, then it boots to Android and I can only access MIUI recovery. Have you worked out another way or am I wrong in doing smth?
(Also pardon my ignorance, but I turned USB debugging on, am I right?)

You don't need ADB for flashing twrp so having usb debugging on is irrelevant.
Flash twrp In fastboot and once it's done and without giving any more commands just hold power and volume up. Eventually it will boot into twrp.
Did anyone wipe system before flashing the global zip over the Chinese rom? I didn't wipe data (which is not smart, I know this) and I have noticed some of the system apps have duplicates with different versions. I also have a few weird behaviors with Google Play store and some other items now. Debating installing TWRP, wiping both, and reflashing.
Nevermind, I can't do that. I don't have another activation for Google Play Music, and I can't set the device ID without root, and I can't root the global version so I can't wipe data. GG

You never ever need to wipe the System so it won't be that, wipe would be recommended if you can do it

You can find one for the Mix1 there, but it is non- functional.
