questions about roms - Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Questions & Answers

Hi, after about a year of using MIUI, I am ready to start messing with the custom roms. Any recommendations what to try first, or what not to miss out on?
Thanks!
another questions, i pressed my screen in and there are a couple of red and blue lines only visible on black background. is this permanent, or can it be fixed? also how much would the replacement screen be. i am thinking selling this and then buying 2s or mi8 would probably be the way to go, no? which of the two do you recommend?
thanks for the possible info

Some pictures would be helpful...
Regarding custom ROMs, be prepared to wipe everything when installing. The 'Remix" ROMs are usually pretty good. But all non-MIUI based ROMs will have less battery life...

HTC 'Nothing but Faults' Desire.

When I first got my desire back in July, I was over the moon with all these jam packed features and functions and that AMOLED screen not to mention my very first smart phone. That didn't last, ever since I moved to the HTC Desire it gives me nothing but grief, I can hardly use it due to its faults, either be it hardware or software based; Boot Loops, Boot Freeze, Inconsistency, On-board Low Memory, Overheating, Buggy that's just a few problems with it.
Trying to fix it by debranding to the HTC Stock ROM didn't solve any problems.
I think the time has come now to move on from my desire and chose another device other than HTC, preferably iPhone?
Please share your experiences regarding this device and what would you recommend as my next device.
-Deeco
Did you try rooting, S-OFF and installing a non-stock ROM? I know 3-4 people with a Desire and they are all stock and they all work immaculately.
I am not interested in using a Non-Stock ROM and I don't think that would make any difference. I was talking generally about the phone and the amount of flaws disadvantages it's self from reliability.
I am absolutely satisfied with HTC after using 3 different phones made by them in the past 3 years. iOS and Apple are great for dumb people.
Why didn't you bring it in for warranty? Freezes and reboots are not normal on an unrooted desire.

Maybe it's just a dodgy phone? A new ROM would amost certainly fix your issues providing they aren't hardware related. Have you tried to get it repaired using your warranty?
I came from an iPhone. iPhone get hotter than this phone.. you probably got a defective phone, mine works flawlessly...
And believe me, use this rom and you'll love it:

If you want to move to another phone look around go in shops there are many try an iPhone, Blackberry, or another phone. It's your choice no one can make that decision for you.

That would be the obvious thing to do, but I am unwilling to have my AMOLED screen replaced with a SLCD one, that's just me.
The phone is defective you guys are right but as explained I don't want the above scenario to occur.
TBH, the only reason one I metioned iPhone is because it has all the features I want 'Front face camera' etc besides the Signal Problem, I can jailbreak/mod the phone to my desire and needs.

Like I mentioned above, I had rooted it but I consider flashing to a Custom ROM will make no difference whatsoever as my device is fault and unwilling to deliver to HTC under warranty due to screen replacement.

so, you're looking for an excuse to buy an iPhone, or you are making yourself a martir? You dont want to try a custom ROM, but dont want to change the phone neither... so what's the point of this thread?

Good point. I'd rather be with an Android OS than iOS, but with that said I'm not going to go over the rigmarole of an Android Vs iOS Vs WP7 'discussion'.
If it was my phone I'd take the time to atleast root it and get Clockwork recovery installed and try a light Sense-based ROM to see if it is defective hardware or not.
What's even more simple than that is resetting the phone to factory defaults to see if the problems persist, have you given that a go?

Look, I'm not sure if I have phrased it wrong or something, but using a custom rom hadn't made any difference.

Aye you did, if it still persists you've got a duff phone. Warranty is the best bet, get them to replace it, then stick with it or try another phone. As it's pointless using a defective device, it'd drive me up the wall.

Exactly, so you've got a defective phone but won't RMA it, purely on the basis you'll get an LCD screen instead? Madness... Those early AMOLEDS are nothing to write home about too.

I thought you didnt tried a custom ROM, my bad. Well, send it to repair, and then sell it in ebay and get an AMOLED one. If you're insterested, and if you live in USA, I got the A8181 version, and I want the A8183 (WCDMA 850), and I dont care to get a SLCD screen.
The SLCD's are actually more vibrant in colour, although I'd say the AMOLEDs are more efficient.

Yet again, I have mentioned that I don't want to sacrifice my AMOLED screen for SLCD as I the AMOLED is what I payed for and is better in comparison. The Desire battery is bad as it is and adding SLCD will not do anygood.
I don't want to drift into that, a back to my first post.

Considering you are asking people for help, you are being very short and sharp with people and really aren't being too polite. That was a statement, I was retorting generally to sarge78's post about screens.

Screen Flicker issues: Possible Statement?

allright guys. After reading the whole thread i see this is truely crazy how much people have this probem. Yesterday i got my second one. And with my second one i have the same issues...I am pretty sure it is a software related issue:
OR
The phone's kernel is ****ed up (battery issues, bad voltage on screen)
OR
there is something wrong with the G-sensor:
Go to your screen settings, and on the bottom of the you can calibrate your G-sensor. When you do this, you see both of the green dots go insane like the screen do!
What do you think guys?
The green dots don't go insane on mine, just slightly up and down. I was waiting for something a little more interesting hehehe

Why? I'm just trying to make a statement on this problem. And try to solve this. Monday i get my third HTC One X. The first X, suffer from screen flickering, mostly on greyish fields the second one, has it too. Both HT23 devices. Both problems.
Personally i'm studying IT, so i only try to get a possible statement with the knowledge i have, and with the custom ROM flash knowledge i have during very very much flashings with my Galaxy S.
I'm just trying to get a possible solution. Is this software or hardware? I dont' know for sure. Maybe Paul O Brien can say something about this problem. I'm out of thoughts.
We don't know, some phones have it some don't. Nothing indicating any differences between phones that have it and phones that don't.
Difficult to tell at this stage. We need a brave soul to check for loose connections but I bet no one will tear their HOX apart to find out.
Knock on wood my second one has no screen strobing as of yet 1 day old so far.
Keep replacing until you get one that doesn't flicker is the only solution for the time being.

What we need is HTC to pull their finger out of their arse, and rip one apart that was sent back doa, and then tell us what it is, tbh they probably are doing this, but need more samples of the problem to be 100% sure of it

[Q] Is HOX a bad phone? Thinking of returning

This is my first Android phone. I had iPhone, 3g, and 4 before grabbing the One X. I thought spec wise this phone is amazing, I love the screen and camera so much and ICS finally made Android as smooth if not smoother than iPhones with GPU acceleration. Now I am having issues that's making me think about returning it.
Issues
-Pandora randomly skips songs and buffers a lot
-No lock screen controls on Pandora
-Bought two games on the Play store (Worms & GTA3), they do not work
-The main home screen (the one that it goes to when you hit the home button), changes on me, and nobody seems to know how to set it.
-If you use a pattern screen lock, you still have to slide the ring open before you can do the pattern
Are these Android issues or One X issues? Do you think they will get solved, and how soon? I have 9 days to return this, seriously considering it and just using my iPhone 4 until the new iPhone comes out. Any and all opinions are appreciated.
Thanks

If you felt like reading more... I absolutely love the HOX. The screen is gorgeous and such a pleasure to use. I love the camera as well, it takes amazing pictures, and they looks great on said gorgeous screen. I really want to like this phone, but some of these issues are deal breakers for me and worry me about just putting up with issues like these for two years.
/edit Posted in wrong section, this is an AT&T variant. Can't see where to delete this, so a mod can move it or I suppose it's mostly relevant here.
I would return my phone if the battery life was extremely poor, too much lag, too many bugs or screen flickering. Not cause there no lock screen controls for pandora or you have to unlock the ring after a password. But if those are deal breakers for you then yes, you should return it.
To be honest, this is an amazing phone, it is beautiful, fast and smooth.
To optimize it however, I would suggest rooting it and using a custom rom, which might (just might, don't know for sure) fix your homescreen problem, and for the Pandora and the games you bought, try un-installing and re-installing, if that doesnt work ; email the developers asking for help or answers, I emailed before for 'ISyncr' and got a reply and a fix in less than 2 hours.
Also, for the pull the ring before pattern, im sure on an iphone you haveto slide it before you can put it in number to unlock? Hope this helps
Thanks for the replays. since I want to like this phone so much, I'll try to.root it tomorrow. I work tomorrow so it will be later.
Not sure if I'll get an answer here, but if I root and try some roms will I be able to return it to stock and return it? as I said above, I'm on the AT&T one x.

You're in the wrong forum, go to the AT&T and Rogers One X forum because it is specialized and the AT&T One X has many subtle details that must be followed compared to the HTC One X.

[Q] Thinking about getting the One

Hey guys,
I was thinking of getting the HTC One and had a couple of questions,
1) Can you fully root, unlock bootloader, s-off and everything a new HTC One, if I just bought one from the store today, or a week from now or maybe in January? The reason I ask is is if there is an impending update that you guys know about and the fact that if you got the earlier Droid DNAs, you could unlock it fully but Verizon locked it down later. Just wanted to know that that is not the case.
2) Can you put a reliably functioning AOSP ROM (CM10.x, AOSPA, etc.) on the One? I'm guessing the answer is yes if the answer for 1) is yes but I was also looking for comments on the stability.
3) Is the IR sensor active if you flash an AOSP ROM? Can you get that functionality restored?
4) Can the HTC logo be made a button? I saw something like that when the phone came out and was wondering if that ended up becoming a thing.
5) How's the battery life on AOSP ROMs, can you get through a day's worth of moderate usage, email, lots of texts, a couple calls and twitter?
Bit of background, I have a Droid DNA, unlocked everything, running CM10.1. Was fixing my car, shattered the screen and looking to buy a new phone. Also looking at the S4 Dev Edition but that seems to not be in stock right now.
Thanks in advance for all your help!

Maybe this will help -
1) I just got an HTC One from Verizon this past Friday (11/29) and was able to fully root, unlock the bootloader, and s-off without a hitch.
2) I'm running tikTak 4.4 and it's a great daily driver. It's stable, and obviously there are some small bugs here and there, but overall it's fantastic.
3) I can't speak on this one, as I don't have an IR blaster app to test it with.
4) Kind of. The reality is that certain kernels make a small section of the very bottom of the screen above the logo the menu button. Your thumb tends to overlap the screen and logo, making it seem like the logo is the menu button. It does work, though I personally don't use it.
5) Battery life is okay, but I seem to be getting through the day with usage similar to yours.
I hope this helps!

Yeah it does, thanks very much! Are you able to disable the hardware buttons and switch to onscreen ones at all? Do you know of any ROM that does that? I don't particularly like the button layout so wondering of you could change that at all. Also, how's the camera?

1) As far as dates go, I would try and shoot for before the 2nd week of December...That's when they're releasing the 4.3 update that will likely block s-off.
3) Theres an app called IR Smart Remote (I think that's the name) that works on AOSP ROMs.
Regarding your camera question, some have hardware issues, but if you avoid those the camera is great.

I'm not sure of any AOSP roms that let you do that just yet. I'm sure it's on it's way. As far as the camera goes, I'm pretty happy with it. I'm coming from the S4, which has an excellent camera, and the One isn't as good, but still takes great shots, especially in low light.

you can disable the buttons if you like and even turn off the lights. Im running silimbean and can do this.
I was weary about the buttons too but its not too different than using the nav bar that I was used to. I have a long press home button set to bring up recents.
The camera works. Im not relaly a camera person but it takes good enough pictures for me.
if you utilize the forum and do some searching nay question you ask can probably be answered without posting.

Brand new with HTC

Well i recently recieved an upgrade with my provider and I opted for the M9. This is because for the last 4 years ive had samsung and although I havent a bad word to say for them, I just fancied a change. So here I am.
Quite a difference in the way you can obtain certain things like unlocking, rooting etc. To be honest, though it was a bit worrying at first, I soon managed to get things done and It sort of makes you feel like you're more involved with your phone. Rather than just letting a .zip do all the work or a full firmware file through odin do the business.
Ive only had it 2 days and managed to root, unlock and s-off, Flashed a new firmware and rom and very happy with it. I have noticed despite the camera being a higher pixel count it isnt quite as sharp as the samsung camera, still good though. The front camera is definately better.
Having only had it 2 days though i cant really comment on performance etc etc. I need it longer but i'm relatively happy with how its going.
I do have a couple of concerns. 1 being the temperature it reaches when flashing etc.My samsung used to feel very warm but obviously its more noticable with the HTC due to it being all metal and I guess thats good as it sucks all the heat into the shell and away from the cpu's.
Anyway, this was just to say hi, and that I hope to continue to enjoy my htc experience, its definately come on a lot since my last HTC many years ago (Wildfire S).
Any tips / tricks / must haves that I should know about?
Thanks and HI! =)

Hello. Welcome. I hope you enjoy your M9 experience.
Yeah, they heat up a little bit when flashing, but I think you're assumption on the metal body is correct.
I think the camera is not awesome in lower light situations. outside, it's fantastic. There's a thread on the camera in this forum you should check out, but some people who have used both the S6 and M9 say that the S6 is better in low light situations, but the M9 is better outside. You can probably get some tips in that that thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/general/pictures-m9-t3044267). A lot of people like shooting in manual mode with this phone and can produce some pretty nice results.

Excellent thank you. I'll take a look and see if I can get any tips for improving my pictures. When I was in store chosing my next phone they did mention that it isn't the best in low light, probably due to the smaller aperture but I use take most of my pictures outside or in decent lighting anyway so I suppose it's not an issue as such. I'll definately have a look at that thread though and see if using manual mode will help me out more.
Thanks.
edit - I do have a quick question about firmwares. I have just flashed the 1.40.401.x but also noticed their are some 2.xx.xx something. Which are newer and why the huge difference? lol sorry to ask what is probably a very nooby question.

I find it takes pretty decent still life photos in low light, but not great snapshots of people/pets (things that move). I think on auto, the camera isn't aggressive enough in bumping ISO, so it has to use too slow a shutter speed to completely stop movement.
I think 1.40 was kind of a temporary release to quickly address some issues in 1.32 (camera and CPU management mostly)...I don't think it was ever officially released in the US. But 1.40 has issue of it's own, mainly that charging the phone can be extremely slow at times. I don't know how HTC comes up with firmware numbering, but I would guess that part of the big number jump has to do with the fact that 1.xx firmware was for Android 5.0.2 while the 2.7 firmware runs on Android 5.1. I flashed the 2.7 firmware last night and the 1.40 base rom that I use works fine with it so far...I can't say with certainty that your ROM will work with it though. FYI, I'm on InsertCoin.

Ah I see. I just noticed that most of the roms out at the moment recommend using the 1.40 firmware which is why I flashed that one. I'm currently using Viper which seems good so far, only had it a day. As I was new to everything I thought it best to stick with what is suggested as unlike with my Galaxy s4 the flashing of firmwares and roms seems quite specific. I had noticed it is quite a slow charge process, but I tend to charge overnight if I can and make the phone last the full day so it's not that much of a downer, unless i've had a lot of usage and need a "quick boost" >< then its not so great lol

Many people have reported that rebooting temporarily fixes the slow charge issue.
MaximusHD is the only rom that uses the new firmware currently. I bet others will be updating soon. The Viper guys have been chatting about Viper 3.0 being released soon and I assume it will be 5.1 based.
Thats good. I'll keep checking any updates and see what happens.
I can't wait for a few more roms to be up and about. I'm used to the countless available for the S4 and forget that device is 2 years old now so there was plenty of time to get things going. I shall just have to be patient.
Thanks for all the help mate.

Not a problem. Enjoy the device.
Not to hijack your thread tomorio, but how did you decide on which phone? I have the Galaxy S5 now, but I'm torn between HTC M8, M9, or LG G4. Pros and cons to all. My biggest thing is ease of root as I have a couple of frequent use apps that require it. Thanks in advance for any tips on how you decided!

Hijack away my friend.
I too was torn but between the S6, LG G4 and htc m9. I was leaning away from the S6 as I really fancied a change, however I think it will always have more options available to it (for custom roms etc) due to the larger fan base and it is much simpler to get to grips with for rooting etc.
the G4 my Partner already has and something about it when I used it I just didn't enjoy, and its nowhere near as pretty as the M9 lol. Try one out if you can just to see for yourself. Unfortunately I have no more experience of it than having a little play of her phone so unsure on the rooting processes etc but imagine it to be similar to the Samsung way.
The HTC M9 was a tough choice. Especially when I looked at how rooting etc is done (this is one of the first things i check with phones flash-a-holic you see lol). Anyway, once i'd read over all the advice given in this forum, the how to's etc and got a small amount of knowledge of the process of rooting using fastboot etc i pushed myself to make the choice. As far as user friendly goes, I think for simpler flashing the Sammy will always win again, as it's processes are far simpler (flashing via odin etc and all the files being ready to flash straight off the bat). However if you're keen for a change then I would recommend the M9. I've only had it a few days really but already i'm glad I did.
Just be sure to look through all the ways of rooting so that you get a better understanding of how its done. I think once the initial unlocking bootloader, rooting and flashing custom recovery is done it;s pretty simple after that. I've got to grips with it already.
One of the main benefits I found with the sammy phones was I was never worried about bricking because there were many different ways to get it back up and running. I dont know how that fares with the M9 but as long as you follow the instructions step by step and have backups available you should be ok.
Sorry for the wall of text, if you need anything else let me know.
Hope that helps.
- edit- also i may have touched on it in a previous post, but i think as far as customizing your phone goes and making it your own, I feel that HTC as a company are much more in tune with "our world" of people who like to change the stock features and put their own touch on things.
Walls of text don't bother me. I'd rather have too much information than not enough. It's going to be the M9 if we can work out the AT&T issues I mentioned in my other thread. I went to the store last night expecting a simple transaction like the bazillion other phone upgrades I've done over the years. Walked out steaming, to say the least. The worst part was the lady helping me majorly projected a "couldn't care less" attitude that is a major pet peeve of mine!
