July "2018" My bad typo....
I recently got a refurb Pixel XL after making an DeviceProtect warranty claim for my Nexus 6p because the battery was jumping from 40% to 15% in an instant.
I had been able to voice dial people in my Google contacts list on the 6p using 8.1 up to the May or June update I believe. This while in my car on the road, with (Project FI) cell data turned off.
When I received the Pixel XL I did a full flash of 8.1 June using ADB. I had been using offline voice dial in it too with cell data off and no internet connection on the road.
Sometime in the last week, and probably after the 8.1 July update, I can no longer voice dial offline. Since voice dialing is now done only through the Google Assistant, when I say a name to dial it gives me a stupid
error saying it's not in my contact list, when of course it is. Then it tells me to choose the contact from the screen while I am driving, that only tempts me to throw the phone out the window and drive over it many times.
I called Google support, but I got some not to sharp people who wanted me to boot in safe model, flash to factory settings, etc. I told them I would be happy to do this if they can definitively tell me first
that the Google Assistant can still dial offline from my contacts with no internet or cell data. I'm still waiting for their answer.
Can someone who is on 8.1 July verify that you can no longer offline voice dial someone in Google Contacts???
Thanks,
Phil
Certain contacts have no problem when offline. Others will tell me no contact found without data.
Hell, I even have contacts that I just can't call using voice command.
For example.
"B"
"Aunt Ann will beat my ass"
"Herbert"
"Jose electric"
Those are just some. Doesn't matter if I'm in Android auto, Google assistant, or voice command, I can't call them.
NoIdea,
So you are running 8.1 July patch???
I might try calling Project FI support, instead of hardware support.
I suppose I could do a factory reset.....
However, the voice dialing is done by the Google (Assistant) App.
If you turn off cell data and internet, it won't even run.
Google doesn't know what it is doing
I asked google support if they actually have discontinued voice dialing by name offline from the contact list.
I got this reply:
Hi Phil,
Thanks for writing back to Google!
Our team is already aware of the issue and we're currently investigating this issue, however we do not have any resolution at this time. Google is committed to continually making improvements to our devices and regularly provides free software updates to customers. We'd highly appreciate your patience.
Thanks,

Not paying attention
Now I get a response from google saying it is a problem with the microphone, when clearly the microphone and the Google assistant hear each other fine:
It clearly IS NOT THE MICROPHONE. When I say "Call Mom home", the assistant replies "who is your mom?" When I say "Call Dave", it keeps on asking me to repeat the name, finally saying it is not in my contact list, and of course it is.
Then it tells me to look it up myself in the contact list.
If data is enabled, it has no problem completing the request.
Please do not corrupt my description of the problem and attribute it to something it cannot be.
I really do believe that Google has decided to eliminate offline dial by name in contact list, but you have not verified this to me.

I'm looking into buying a Google Voice App. Did a few searches, but the reviews are mostly outdated and some of the cons are undoubtedly fixed.
Wondering if anyone recently done the same search and what conclusion you came to?

If you mean the program that records calls, I had an issue one time on my HD7. I used the app on an Android and it recorded a call and kept showing the icon on the lockscreen of my HD7 when I started using it. What it did was mix up the voice message origin between the Google app and the built-in app. I could never get the icon to go away until I made a new voice message to my HD7 using the built-in app. Then I was able to delete the message and make the icon disappear.
I stopped using Google Voice because of that.
I've been using GoVoice, and its worked pretty good so far. Its a far cry from the official Google Voice app I had on android, so I'm hoping socket support comes soon, and hoping Google will make an official app like they did with the iPhone.
I come from using a Nexus One so the switch has been painful to say the least. I do like GoVoice somewhat. Hate the fact that you have to sign up for a third party service to get push notifications. Otherwise it's an ok app.
My pick is FreeTalk. I was using GoVoice before, but I found that FreeTalk offers a more user friendly interface. I like the fact that when I start up FreeTalk, you can immediately choose to either look at your messages or immediately swipe to the phone keypad hub screen to make a call. This is especially useful to me, as I make a lot of international calls through Google Voice. Lastly, for those who might need this feature, there is a non-English translation option that will translate your SMS and text voicemails to another language. I am not sure if this is built-in into the Android version, and I don't think I saw it in GoVoice either.
Seeing the "similar threads we found", I see that I'm not the only one having this issue and we're not the only phone having problems.
Turns out there's a known issue on Google Voice where if the customer adds a line, subtracts a line or screws with their service in any way that requires an activation of the line that's on Google Voice (like an upgrade...yknow like we all did ), that Google Voice can fizzle out. Basically, it automatically unchecks the box that says "this phone can receive texts" which prevents your phone from receiving texts. This also changes the setting on the phone app to route texts through your stock messages app again. This will step-by-step you into changing them back.
Well I got mine working again, and I'd like to share how I did it so maybe it'll work for you.
**NOTICE**
This is for one line on Google Voice only. Apparently this won't work if you have multiple phones attached to the same Google account.
Okay:
1. open up your web browser and go to: voice.google.com. Then open up google voice on your phone.
2. in the browser, click your phone number (top right corner). A menu will pop up and you'll notice the "this phone receives text messages" (or however it's written) is unchecked. That's the bug, it'll uncheck itself every time you go to that screen. Also, when this box becomes unchecked, it actually changes a setting in the Google Voice app on your phone to route texts through the stock messaging app again (annoying).
3. Check that box so that it's one (don't close out of the browser yet, leave it on that screen)
4. Then, in your google voice app on the phone, go to menu > more > settings > notifications and sync where there's a drop down menu specifying whether you want messages received by the messages app or GVoice. choose which one you want (i'm assuming if you're here, you use GVoice). This is the setting I mentioned that it changes in the app (all the way back in step 2).
5. Now you should still have GVoice open in your browser. If not, you follow directions badly and need to repeat the process. If yes, you should have the unchecked box checked (when it wasn't before) and the setting on the phone app itself changed back to normal.
6. While the browser is open, have a few people text you. You should now be getting texts and voicemails delivered to your GVoice account again. This isn't necessary, but to test to make sure you did it right.
Last: once you re-establish that "connection" close the browser and never go back to that options page again (it'll just un-check that box and change that setting on the phone and make you do this all over again). Now your GVoice should be working properly.
*addendum*
If you're still have trouble after this. Go back to the options page where you started, check the box, then uninstall/re-install Gvoice on your phone and go through the set up again...then continue following the steps.
*addendum 2*
If this fails, then disable GVoice services with Sprint and set them up anew using the app on your phone (like you did the first time).
Don't worry about the "can't do whatever", just hit "skip".
Then follow the steps above.
Hope this helps, I know us GVoice users are minority but hey we need people to figure crap out too

I have tried these steps and nothing works..If i change the setting in the app to use the google voice app for receiving text it automatically un checks the box online in the google voice settings. When I recheck the box online the app reverts back to using the stock app for messaging in the goggle voice app. quite pissed off about it but i'm still receiving calls from my google voice number so I guess I will live with it until its figured out.

here's the essential part:
Check the box, but leave the browser window open so you can see it.
save the setting for using GVoice but leave the settings open so you can see it.
Then open a new browser window and text someone using the browser interface in a separate tab. I use Google Chrome and have the GVoice extension so I didn't need to do that.
The idea to get texts moving back and forth while both are checked without leaving so they can't uncheck (which they won't do if you stay in the windows).
Once you get the flow of traffic going, then leave those settings windows and never, ever go back to them. It's a cheap fix and a house of cards of sorts (i've accidentally undone my own work twice), but it does work.
Ok..this is what I discovered for me. I have an Evo3D flashed to boost and I have the same google voice number going to it as I do the touch. I was looking at my settings online and suddenly the box for receiving text to the 3D was unchecked so I rechecked it. Well when I did that my messages started going through the stock messaging app on the 3D . So I decided to uncheck both my Touch and my 3d in the settings online to receive text and now I'm getting my text back through the google app. This makes no sense but its working right now.

Tell me about it dude, I spent 4 hours finding my method last night and an extra hour today screwing around. I have the worst headache right now lol.
I didn't know you had two lines on GVoice, I have no clue how that works lol. Hopefully your tinkering helps others.

They will both ring at the same time and its pretty good. I don't know whats going on but I don't see how I can be receiving text messages with it unchecked on the setting part on the web...oh well!

yeah, it is a known issue and Google is working on it (at least according to their forums). it started with the newest Google Voice updates for honeycomb.
I actually got the E4T to lag last night using Google Voice..I felt it was brag worthy

I suspect it'll be fixed in the next update or two.
If you didn't mind going through the WHOLE set up process again, you could find and download an older apk and just go back to a bug-free version. I have a transparent themed one and an inverted one from before the latest update and they worked fine before I updated it (ever since, they are screwed up).

Thank you sir...
My work requires a password and encrypted phone. No biggie. However, OK Google does nothing with a locked device (we can't use Trusted Agents). On my Note 5, I could still do non-personal stuff ("what's the weather?," "wake me up at 6 AM"). With my Pixel XL, I can do nothing.
Is this personal assistant? Is there an alternative? Quite annoying to say the least.

I think the latest update knocked it sideways.
I never had any issues until the latest GA update.
Doing a little research I have found a bloom of complaints in the last couple of weeks.
I have to continually go back and check the trusted voice attribute.
i suspect it has to do with have multiple google accounts in my phone.
I am sure it will be addressed in future updates.

I have been having issues too, does your "Trusted Voice" setting keep getting disabled in the background? That's the problem I keep noticing in my Google App Settings (in hotword detection). I talked to a support rep, just keep sending feedback from that settings page by pressing the question mark in the upper right, then selecting Send Feedback at the bottom of the page that appears. Simply type in that Trusted Voice disabled itself and submit. The only way we get this fixed is by telling them about it.
So... The other day I tried to access voice detection via "Hey Google" and it didn't activate.
Upon further research, I found that 'voice detection' setting in the Google app was toggled off. No biggie. Toggle it on and it worked again. Tried it again because I'm an OCD fool when it comes to not trusting Google after my woes with this device. Low and behold it didn't work. Returning to the same screen as previously viewed showed that it was again toggled to disabled.
At this point, I'm in WTF mode.
I reenable it and launch the Google app manually and click the mic. Speak command. Command executes. "Hey, Google." Assistant activates and subsequent command executes. "Hey, Google" again fails and it is now disabled in the options again.
Anyone else experienced this?
i had trouble with that. i cleared data from google app and reset permissions and waited an hour and it started working again or something... wish i had better advice. might want to contact google support.

Sadly, I really REALLY don't. I've had to RMA and now requested a refund through their support. If you have never dealt with them, be glad.
I have had pretty good experiences with their support ever since the Google one thing started.
Finally new BS4Pro update with JoyUI 13 android 12. A new feature includes shark spaces, screenshot editor, systems Interface, themes, icons … whatever.
Incoming / receiving calls got an issue at first. Cannot make a single call & no speech voice when receiving a call. However, finally make them work again by removing SIM Card, changing preferred network type, reseting forward calling from Xiaomi Contact/Dialer ... , and resetting blocklist feature from security.
Anyone got a new experience!!

If I recall correctly, Go to Setting > Account & Sync > Sing to Mi Account
Let your account accessible for almost weeks or months (DO NOT Sign OUT at all), while that, try to "Check for Updates" button frequently from "My devices" option.
the update might pop up for you. I know it's a crazy waiting time process. but it did the purpose of updating into new ROM
Hi i just found this post and i try what you explain but I don't have the upgrade yet. What do you meen when you say to sing to mi account? Mine is already connect and i don't have upgrade since a long time
