LineageOS Email app (com.android.email) on stock rom? - Moto G5 Questions & Answers

Hey everyone,
while a friend of mine is not ready for a custom rom yet , she would like to try the default LineageOS Email app on her cedric stock rom (no unlocked bootloader, no mods whatsoever). She saw it on my 7.1 (https://forum.xda-developers.com/g5/development/7-1-x-lineageos-14-1-moto-g5-t3611973) and I guess, if you're looking for an ad-free, clean and simple email client, that's a good one to try.
I found the apk on apkmirror (https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/linea...1-0-release/email-8-1-0-android-apk-download/), I installed it, but it keeps crashin on startup, so here are my questions
1. Is it even possible to use the LineageOS Email app on another ROM?
2. If so, is there another dependency (another app, service or something), that has to be fulfilled?
3. Or is it not intended to use the app on another ROM?
Thanks for any pointers and regards,
Chris

I can get other versions of the app to work however it requires you also need exchange services apk but this needs to be installed as a system app due to permissions
Therefore unless you have a rooted device or can find a modified version that doesn't require this app to be installed as a system app you will not be able to use it
I suggest using a 3rd party app - the following is free and open source
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fsck.k9

Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation, that's what I was afraid of
Yeah, she tried K9 but was not entirely happy with it... can't remember why.
Anyway, thanks again for your help, much appreciated

@TheFixItMan - Email doesn't need the exchange apk to work, the app just adds the exchange button in the mail adress setup process. Without it, you can just use pop3 and imap.
@Chris180206 - you can try this one, it is from LOS 14.1 (wzedlare's build). It worked for me on many aosp roms installed as third party app, it could work on stock too.

The app will work as I mentioned in previous post but you will get exchange services has forced closed messages
Since I don't use the app I don't know if this is just during set up or if the force close messages will be persistent
Also I don't know what the persons use would be so if that's a requirement it won't work

@Zokhii: Thanks for the apk. you extracted that from /system/app right? i think i tried that one before on stock and it also failed, but i'll give it another go.
@TheFixItMan: You're absoletly right, I could have been more specific. The app will only be needed for pop3/imap.
Thanks both for your effort, I'll try again with the lineage 14.1 email apk.
Cheers,
C

Can anyone provide email-10.apk? It should be out.

email v10 can be found in lineage 17.1 at /system/product/app/Email/Email.apk
easy to extract using twrp file manager. after install on other aosp rom, manually go allow its permissions.. then it will run just fine.

Hi @zimral.xda
I extracted the apk as mentioned by @stealth27374 , installed it on my Pixel 4a with the official Lineage OS 18.1 but the email app keeps crashing on startup.
How did you install the apk (click on apk in file browser and confirm installation or something more elaborate...)?
What permissions need to be allowed?
Any other pointers or ideas, why this approach is not working for me without me taking logs for now?
Thanks and regards,
C

Hi Chris,
>>How did you install the apk (click on apk in file browser and confirm installation or something more elaborate...)?
Yes, grab the apk file and "install" it via file manager.
After start it crashes immediately.
>>What permissions need to be allowed?
I'm using the german version not sure if the translation is 100% correct, here are the permissions:
- Access to data and media/ (unfortunately) "all files"
- access to Calendar
- access to contacts
- access to the phone
deny: all other rights
after granting the 4 above, the email clients starts witout any problem and you can configure it.
Hope this helps&
Cheers, Ralf

wwwwwaaaaawwww, thanks Ralf, that was exactly it... it works.
you can barely know, how happy that makes me, because as unbelievable as it is, the lineage email client is the cleanest one out there (obviously my subjective opinion )
so again, thanks a million everyone... now all the puzzle pieces finally fit together

hehe cool! yes, i agree, other mail clients are too much for me either. i dont want to read mails just to be able to receive one in case i need to reset something or for a short communication.

I followed the instructions and the app works... but the asociated widget doesn't configure the corresponding folder view,
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
after configure It remains in preconfig view,
Waht could be the reason ?
Thanks

Hmm, i have no idea. I do not use the mail widget. i have discovered that there are several different versions for the LOS 17.1 mail client floating around. I am using the one i have extracted from another Galaxy S5 (klte version) running LOS17.1. There is another version on "APKmirror" in the LOS download section:
https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/lineageos/email-3/email-3-10-release/ this has a file size of ~8.7 MB
The one i extracted out of the phones /system/product/app/Email/Email.apk has ~8.2 MB file size

Yes, I tried with previous version of the same app email v9 , and it works fine, and the widget too.
If I update to v10, the widget continues working but the new ones don't.

I tried to install LineageOS email v9 taken from another device on a stock Oreo device, but with no success; it closes immediately after start, even if I configured required permissions. Probably I'm asking too much. Also the APK Mirror version doesn't work.
Is there any simple and working email client out there? FairEmail, PEP, K9 and others from FDroid have ugly interfaces or doesn't work correctly.

Hi all. I was able to compile this stock build of LOS 14.1 thanks to the efforts/hard works of Skrilax_CZ, bhb27, the folks who created RR, and those over at Lineage OS/CyanogenMod. It takes some minor features from RR (i.e. notification light, some tiny performance/battery tweaks, and the ability to install Motorola apps). It is otherwise stock LOS 14.1 and I use this daily. The other authors/devs and I assume no responsibility if you damage your device somehow.
Please don't feel pressured to update any more often than you wish .
Notes:
In order to make my calling work for Verizon, I had to go under Settings -> More -> Cellular networks -> Preferred network type, and select LTE/CDMA (not LTE/GSM/UMTS). I assume GSM users should be fine with the defaults.
Also if on Verizon, you should most likely select VZWINTERNET as your APN under Settings -> More -> Cellular networks -> Access Point Names (might not show up at first, but eventually loads)
My recommendations to install:
Install TWRP if you haven't already
3.1.1 - https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=39562 (forum:http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...recovery-twrp-2-8-7-0-touch-recovery-t3180308)
Perform a backup of your current system/ROM (if coming from another ROM).
Perform a factory reset/wipe (if coming from another ROM).
Install the .zip
Install the appropriate google apps.
http://opengapps.org/. I would think nano or micro is best, ARM, and 7.1
Wipe dalvik/art cache if you install another kernel. I highly recommend BHB27 kernel

Thanks. No I didn't change anything about the kernel. There isn't a good alternative (that I know of yet) so I just used it straight from bhb for now.
How do I disable the capacitive buttons and use on screen nav bar instead?

My device is showing no root on this ROM and if I install super su it gains root but shows no sim card available. Fixed by enabling root permission in development settings.
The rom is almost 100%, the battery is well lasting me .... 1 screen time every 10% quietly, the only problem I really noticed was sending images on whatsapp that is not 100%, you send catch screen and photos taken by whatsapp ... now send images from the gallery do not know why, it just outside joys and once again thank you for your development. @calsurferpunk

I'm not sure what could be going on. I haven't flashed su and just use the stock CM root manager. Enabling root for apps only in developer options makes everything work for me when an app requests it. I did notice that I had to make sure that iSu was setting the policy as permissive (causes FC when set as enforcing).
If not bother you wanted to report a small simple mistake that can not encomodar only to warn even ... In Menu> Settings> Developer Options> animator duration scale, the second option is 0.5x and there is 5x....When I click on the Home screen and select background he simply FC, that's Gallery problem equal to whatsapp that has pictures not ...
The maintainer of CrDroid said I do not know how to use the Android and it really is a problem of rom and he would not listen to me and said she did not like my attitude. @calsurferpunk

So if I flash ROM and iSu says no root, then I just have to enable root in developer options without flashing SuperSU? I actually tried developer option after flashing SuperSU. Maybe that's why it didn't work. Let me know if I am right then I'll try the correct procedure.

That's all that I did and I haven't had any issue yet. I didn't have to change anything with iSu either (even if I did mess with it later just to see what it does).
Just as a quick update, next time I post an updated build I believe I know how to skip including iSu and kernel auditor by default. I'll make sure to include a way to download them and include them separately if this is successful. The goal of this is to keep it as close to stock CM 14.1 and still be functional so that anything you want to add can be done by your own free will .

Hey @calsurferpunk, very good job. But I have to tell u about a bug I notice. When you'll transfer a music from pc to the phone, the music player says "That's impossible to play (Name of the Music)" and in the Google Play Music the music it's with 0 seconds. The music only goes if you put in recovery mode and transfer the mp3 archive while you're at TWRP.

It might be a bug with Play Music. I have transferred music normally and Poweramp plays it without any problems.

Fire TV 1 OS5 Rooted Play Store (OpenGApps) without Xposed

Hi all/ @MastahF / @ians325 / @ggow @Vlasp / @MetaIIica / @guyHalestorm / @inwisso / @elliwigy / @peleg / @Lochy19 ,
I have been spending many hours trying to get the Play Store to work by installing the most recent release of OpenGApps on my rooted FireTV 1 OS5 (Unlocked bootloader) without success. I tried both the "Pico" version as well as the "TVStock" version, and every time I try to open the Google Play Store I get the error "This version of the app isn't compatible with your device. To fix this problem, go to Settings and uninstall updates for the Google Play Store app". I also tried various versions of the Play Store vending APK and gms/gsf/gsf.login APKs without success. I have not installed Xposed framework and the HDXposed plugin. Changing values in build.prop did not make a difference.
I was under the impression that the OpenGApps package was designed to overcome these checks and work out of the box but I am not sure if that is correct.
Can you please help me to get the Play Store working on this device? I have spent quite a few hours and cannot get it to work. Preferably, I would like to keep the installations as minimal as possible and from reliable sources to keep it simple and safe.
Many thanks!
i have give up with FireTV Devices, the crappest sh** was on market... My Family and i use my Sticks now only in the Kidsroom and in the Kitchen for Zattoo and streaming Youtube and Kodi
I spend my time for a real Android TV-Box was have all what we need to use as real Android Device...

Hi Peleg,
Many thanks for your reply. From what I gather, the only way to get the Play Store functioning properly involves having to install Xposed Framework. I was trying not to do that for security purposes, but I might just have to. To confirm, Xinstaller and HDXposed are both open-source right?
Thanks

@peleg, I did as you said and installed the Xposed framework along with XInstaller and HDXPosed for good measure, and after enabling the options you had sent in your screenshot, I still get the following error when launching the Play Store: "This version of the app isn't compatible with your device. To fix this problem, go to Settings and uninstall updates for the Google Play Store app".
Is there anything that I can do to fix this last issue? I really want to get this thing up and running. I also checked and the Play Store is located within the Phonesky directory and called Phonesky.apk rather than vending, etc.
Thanks.

I think that you're using the version for tablets/phones, I also had that problem and was corrected with the installation of the Android TV version (Google Play Store (Android TV) 7.5.08), you can find it on apkmirror website, also remember to install the google play service (Google Play services (Android TV) 10.2.98) from the same website, best regards.

Check this thread over. Seems they where able to figure things out for the FTV2. Which should easily work on the FTV1. You just need to get the ARM files instead of the ARM64 version of files. Maybe someone can post the completed ARM versions.
If I ever get around to trying it out I will probably share mine. But not sure when that will be. If you get things going on your FTV1 before then. Don't forget to share yours.

Thanks for replying. I finally got it to work for the most part, but I don't know what exactly did the trick. In the end, installing Play Store 4.6.1.7 worked for me in combination with the build.prop tweaks, Xposed w/ Xposed modules, etc. All in all it was a PIA and should not be so complicated IMHO..
Now when I do a search most apps do not appear as if my device is incompatible with them even though my build.prop is all changed for a Samsung mobile handset, and the "My Apps" is empty which is also annoying and means I have to find the app somehow to update it. Lastly, even if I do find the app, many times I cannot click on it no matter which way I move the remote control arrows - very irritating. Let me know if you have any solutions to these last problems. I think the "Mouse Toggle" app solves the inability to click on things, but I don't know about the other two issues...
Thanks.

The mod I linked to uses an Android TV PlayStore. So you should be able to just use your remote to navigate it. Not sure if XPosed is a must or not on it. But that might be another Plus on that option. Not sure.. XPosed & HDXPosed are still required. It just changes the PlayStore package that is installed from regular to Android TV which is better for FireTV's.

•WHAT IS THIS?
This is a modded version of the original YouTube app that:
• Enables background / screen-off playback
• Removes ads (now in stock Motorola's rom too!) (thanks to @arter97)
•INSTRUCTIONS:
• UNINSTALL EXISTING YOUTUBE if you have it. Recommend using one of the many system apps Uninstallers that you can find on the play store, or a file manager that can delete from /system/app
Note: In the updates, if you are using Substratum to theme YouTube (especially if using Substratum's legacy mode), you may have to remove overlay first prior to updating. Otherwise, YouTube will crash immediately when opening. How to do that? See here.

Hi sheriff,
I don't think so, go to the ORIGINAL thread for more info.
This mod is based upon the source code of the following xPosed module:
http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.pyler.youtubebackgroundplayback
All credits for the research behind this go to the authors of the module.
I merely "ported" it to the original YouTube APK for all the people that don't have xPosed.
Why does this exist?
Because not everyone has xPosed, especially now that Nougat is starting to spread to more and more devices

Try with the new version, just install as a normal .APK, report if this worked.

thx but to be correct for the themed and non root versions we should rather thank and give credits to @laura almeida as this work is done by her we "just share our resources" these days but u surely read already about
that in original thread, second post. so there is something missing in the credits.

Corrected, @laura almeida added to the credits in OP, thanks you both for the amazing job.:good:
I have two problems, with the zip file, after flashing I open YT and the background play works but the ads stills there and worst, I can't skip it after the five seconds. In the non-root apk, when I install the microG and sign me up, the YT app crashes and doesn't let me open it, I don't know what I'm doing wrong ):

That's very strange (the ads thing), it never happened to me, actually, works pretty well the .ZIP version. Regarding to microG, to be honest, i never used it.
I tested the non-root version [grey & black] (i am using it, right now), and i haven't faced any issues so far, everything works as expected.
Since i am not the developer of any of these apk's (i just created the flashable zip option) i suggest you to go to the original thread (located HERE) see: main thread and posts #2 & #3.
If you have Magisk (suggested: beta v13.0), in the post #3, you will find the ZaneZam and laura almeida version (non-root) ported into a magisk module. I didn't post it to the main thread because i haven't tested the Magisk version.
@moonlightdrive hey thanks for this! it works! I tried other mods they just refuse to work! but yours is a different story! thanks a bunch!
i got a suggestion.. can you make a themed version? i need a black one... because i always watch youtube at night and the white theme really burns my eyes..
i know i can download zanezam version but his non root version uses different package name (and causes problems on chromecast detection)
and his root version doesnt remove ads (yes i installed using his instruction using his flashable zip)
thanks :good:

Hi mate, you're welcome!.
I started using this version YouTube_v12.23.60(nodpi)(Grey_Black_v1.1).apk since a couple of days ago, i checked and effectively his package name was modified to 'com-lara-android.youtube', anyway, it's working as expected so far, when i connect my device to Chromecast via youtube app it works as normal.
i am using a Google Chromecast 2 (not enrolled into beta testing software program).
The version of the app that i am currently running it's the Grey and Black v1.1 (by ZaneZam & laura).
Please, give it a shot to prove if with this version you have the same troubles with Chromecast.
I am on Invicta OS 4.2 (LineageOS based rom) with Open-GAPPS Pico and rooted with Magisk v13.
Hello, I downloaded the apk yesterday and since then It doesn't let me sign in, is there a way to fix that?

Hi, wich version did you download?, are you on custom or stock rom?
If you have root, install the last ZaneZam's version (from yesterday 7/Jul/2017). Assuming that you are running on a custom rom.
Download: youtube_12.25.52-1225523300_minAPI21(armeabi-v7a)(nodpi)-adaway-backgroundplayback.apk.
Installation:
With your prefered file manager (and root permissions), do the following:
Paste the .apk file to /system/app
Give 644 permissions to it, in /system/app/name-of-the-app.apk
* You can give permissions with any terminal emulator or ADB interface.
ADB:
- adb root
- adb shell chmod 644 /system/app/name-of-the-app.apk
- adb reboot

Terminal:
- su
- chmod 644 /system/app/name-of-the-app.apk

* If you are on stock Motorola's rom, go to the thread description and search for the stock rom version (i updated the links a minits ago).

Google Nexus Player
Code:
- Your warrenty is now void.
- You have been warned.
- Use at your own risk.
Introduction:
This is the Official Lineage OS 16.0 thread for the (Asus) Google Nexus Player , codename fugu.
How to Install:
Please follow the instructions on our Official LineageOS Wiki page here.
If you don't follow these instructions, please don't expect support here. We also don't support 3rd party addons (Magisk/XPosed/Dolby/Viper/etc.), so please don't seek support if you use these.
Known Bugs:
None!
Notes:
We pass SafetyNet without any 3^rd party addons. AddonSU, and other addons will likely change this.
Because Lineage 15.1 is AOSP based as opposed to Lineage 14.1 which used a hybrid AOSP/CAF base, the in-remote Microphone works!
Neither OpenGApp's nor MindTheGApp's ATV packages currently fit on the Nexus Player's small system partition! Use the GApps Iink if you want them -- if you use these, Google apps will crash, and Developer Settings will not open. Use *only* the ATV GApps I link below if you wish to use GApps.
Download:
LineageOS Updater
Custom ATV OpenGApps TVStock Build (thanks to @msg01 for discovering the root of this problem and building this package!) -- You will want to either sideload or install the Google Webview from the Play Store (or the one in that Google Drive folder, as it was excluded in this GApps build to make it fit in fugu's small system partition.

Same. Tried force quitting and clearing data for the Play Store. Didn't help. It just sits at "install pending" forever for any app.
EDIT: I tried again from scratch but with the javelinanddart build of "MindTheGapps-8.1.0-atv-x86-20180320_010247.zip". Same issue.
Awesome! Glad there's still development here!

Yeah, its a stupid Google bug. Let the play store do its thing and update, don't try to install/update anything.
What is happening is Google Play is updating, then Google Play service is doing like a 150mb update in the background at a turtle's pace.
Then reboot from in the settings app. Should solve it.
Also, I didn't block development settings? You need to click the build # a ton of times as always. They work great here.

Noted. Never tried that path. Will look into it.
Can someone please post some screenshots? I'm dying of curiosity as to what LineageOS for Android TV is
Is there a way to operate TWRP other than a mouse on the USB port with an OTG cable?
My OTG cables have a right angle bend that overlaps the HDMI and I can't get them to both fit. I even took a Dremel to a cheap HDMI cable and can't get it to fit. Forcing it will put torque on the USB connector and I don't want to break it internally. I suppose I'll order a straight OTG cable from Amazon, but it will take a couple days to get here.

Try it then? ;p Honestly though, right now we don't have Customizer updated, so if you sue the O launcher, it'll look the same as stock, with extra OS features.

Yeah, TWRP is a pain on this device. I use an AirMouse via OTG.
I should have Lineage Recovery (navigable with the bottom button like the fastboot mode on fugu), ready in a bit here.
Great work! As soon as Netflix is fixed I will start using this. The only purpose my Nexus Player serves is to run OpenVPN and Netflix UK to watch certain shows I can't get here in the states.
Looking forward to trying this, will be checking in frequently.

I do not have a Nexus Player - I have a Mi Box - Like I said, it was a huge curiosity. But thanks for the explanation of what it is currently!
After re-installing everything from scratch I will be able to download applications from the Play Store. Unfortunately, Netflix does not work (reports error ui-800-3). Another program that does not work is MX-Player.
i'm not seeing /sdcard/ in twrp.. Do I have to use OTG or does nexus player have a built in SD card??

I had /sdcard/ on mine. I was able to adb push the LOS zip and MTGapps. Perhaps it's in /storage/ with an alias.

stuck with google play store
Hey guys,
any suggestions?
- From TWRP:
- Wipe Data/Cache/System
- Install Lineage
- Install mindthegapps OR opengapps
- clear cache
- reboot
With mindthegapps, it seems like lineage doesn't install as this looks like the stock oreo os, google play store is there, but I'm stuck with all of my apps pending installation issue - even when left overnight. unable to sideload
With opengapps - lineage seems to successfully install, but then there is no google play store, so im unable to download anything - i thought maybe i could workaround by downloading the apk through the web browser, but their is no file explorer so im unable to browse to the apk file.
I'm stuck - would greatly appreciate any / all help!
got it working
Hey guys - figured it out. Was an issue with the opengapps file I was using. Had to remove a few things from the apps folder.

I'm using Official LineageOS 18.1, and now I'd like to install LOS19. But adb sideload los.zip no response for a long time. even use pure LOS recovery or twrp. In LOS recovery, 'Verifying update package...', In twrp, just keep rolling progress bar. Adb command interface no response. I can use Ctrl+C to cancle it.
I downloaded a software from Chrome. When I try to install it.The system rebooted.

yup, it's verifying, leave it and wait for it - or try a different cable.
One stupid question:
As per the instructions here: https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/walleye/upgrade
to upgrade from 18.1 to 19.1... Is it enough to just sideload the 19.1 zip file with adb? . Is it not a requirement to have flashed the correspondent recovery image for 19.1 beforehand (like in a normal first-time LOS installation)?

OK, flashed 19.1 recovery, then sideloaded LOS19.1.zip as per the official guide... everything worked fine, phone rebooted in Android 12.
Testing here and there, everything seems to work fine. The camera app seems to have downgraded to just very basic features compared to the cam app in LOS 18.1. Thanks for that, I will report back if I notice some issue, but so far all good.

1, Settings -> Storage -> App usage size incorrect. Initial shown system used 14GB space, after some time(now), System 8.2GB, 'Open Camera' 5.56GB of User Data. The first time I found this issue was that after installing Nova Launch. I tried clear it's app data, not work, then I uninstalled it. Now, the space transfer to Open Camera. Uninstalling doesn't change the total usage ( The app is too small ).
2, Settings -> About Phone -> IP address, always 26.26.26.1 and da26:2626::1. I'm sure it's not my IP.
3, I use V2rayNG which is a VPN service. It has a quick setting Tiles. At once I reboot the phone and enabled v2rayNP from Tiles while the service was still off. Then I found registered VPN service disappeared from settings -> network -> vpn.

1. I have no idea why your apps report huge size. That's not a Lineage thing tho.
2. That's... Odd what router do you have?
3. That is definitely an app bug, VPNs work here.
1.As you see, Open Camera show a huge size. But actually, at first, the size was normal. Well, before Open Camera, it was Nova Launcher. It just need some time that the LOS make it so.
2. I'm in China, and I use a VPN service built by myself but it's not located in US. 26.26.26.1 is a US IP, right?
Should I make a clean LOS install? I'm not sure after the adb no response accident, has something went wrong? I don't want to download & backup & restore, that's horrible.
Hi,
I've just installed this ROM. Thanks for the work !
I just have a problem with the customization menu in the settings. The activity is crashing instantly.
It's the menu "Fond d'écran et style" in french (don't know the exact name in english :s).Tthe one allowing to change home and lockscreen background.
Is it working for you ?
