I'm trying to figure out if I'm the only one or if there is a fix for contacts not syncing in the new Dp4 beta preview. Everything else syncs but contacts. I did a clean flash and set up as I always do. I've tried everything I could possibly think of to fix it but nothing works. Is anyone else experiencing this and if so anyone come up with a solution?
Had the same issue after wiping and trying to setup new. Had to unenroll and go back to Oreo ...

Same thing. I filed an issue on Google Tracker.
I just rolled back, setup and then did the OTA.
Ok thanks to dallas90733 for helping me with this.
Go into your Gmail account on your phone's web browser.
You can export your vcard (for iOS contact). Go into your Google contact app and import it to your phone. Not a fix but a solution to get your contacts back till Google fixes the issue
Yup same for me. Was having battery issues so I factory reset DP3. Contacts won't sync and still not syncing with DP4. Tried clear data, clear cache etc. Might end up going back to 8 if it works there
SOOOOO glad I'm not the only one.
I was going nuts looking at Google issue tracker.
Thanks!
Ok so if you do a factory reset after being on beta 4 it works! Also I noticed that when I did the original factory reset coming from beta 3, it didn't erase everything. For example after I set everything up and it went to the homescreen for the first time it had the wallpaper that I had before I factory reset my phone. So I'm thinking that when coming from beta 3 to beta 4 it isn't actually fully resetting it causing this contacts Bug and a few small other ones as well.
No issues here dp4 ota.

If you have this issue. Opt out of the beta program. Install the 8.1 update. And opt in again on the beta program. Then you will get the update for DP4. With no issues of the contacts.
I did clean install on DP4 as well with No Contacts sync. I ended up doing a clean install of DP3, made sure all was well then dirty flashed DP4 on top of it and all was working fine now

In doing it this way, when you add a contact (either from your phone or via contacts on web) does that new contact sync with the other device?

I'd love to test it, but had too much free time and did another clean install on DP4 and it works fine for me now. Must be a weird glitch or something. The previous 2 clean flashes contacts didn't sync.

I think that's part of the Google restore. Every time I install a new ROM, and sign in with my Google account, it always restores my wallpaper.

Yes if you are doing a restore. A clean install should never leave a trace

By 'clean install' do you mean 'set up as a new device'? Because as soon as you sign in with your Google account after a clean install, it will pull your wallpaper back.

It will put there default wallpaper back. If you change the default wallpaper and do a factory reset it will go back to the default wallpaper

New guy here.
First off, many thanks to all the dev's and forum members for all the hard work they put in to unleash our phones!
Several months ago I flashed CM7 and every time I rebooted my contacts would disappear. However, on my wife's EVO, which was set up the same as mine, she has never had that problem.
I just flashed CM7.1.0 build GWK74
Android 2.3.7
Radio 12.15.00.08.08
Stock CM Kernel
I am still having the issue. I send all of my contacts to the phone from Touchdown(Exchange) and then export them for safe keeping. Even if I import them again they disappear.
I have yet to flash CM7.1 on my wife's EVO as I would like to solve this issue first.
In an attempt to fix, I ran the fix permissions and I am still having the issue after reboot.
I sure would appreciate some help.
You're signed into your google account? I'd trying syncing the contacts to google.

When I originally did the CM7 I did a full wipe.
With the upgrade to CM7.1 I did not.
I have been having the issue since CM 7.0

Ok, so here's the issue.
It won't let me set up and account under contacts for touchdown.
It shows touchdown as an option, but you can't select it.
If I add an account using the built in mail client for exchange, it will sync and all contacts will remain on reboot.
It's a workaround, but it's not right.
I'm not sure if this would be a CM issue or a Touchdown issue.

I think it may be a touchdown issue. You can try it on another rom to verify.
I recently restored, locked, and went completely stock again to test out a few things and I have realized that the device no longer automatically sends my apps to the phone as it previously did. Is there a setting in the account im missing or anything I can do? Its a pain to have to go download all of them one by one
Yeah, i have this problem aswell.. Anybody knows what's up?

Mine did the same thing, good thing I had a full backup on titanium backup to speed the process up a little bit. I was just going between ROMs though.

Dude.. ya think that most people don't know that?
I have the same problem. Did a clean wipe and fresh flash today, and suddenly Google Play is not syncing my apps anymore. Does fine with the contacts and everything, just not Google Play. Note: this is on a Galaxy S2, not a Nexus, but I figured it would be good to know for everyone that this does not appear to be a Nexus issue, but a Play issue.
I've noticed it depends on what Rom you use. When I was on the more stock roms it always did it but now that I'm running aokp it doesn't.

same issue had backup on stock, didn't restore to AOKP
Im having the same issue now too.
wont push from the web
playstore in the phone works
also, chrome to phone wont work. I think its related.
has anyone changed their android ID?

My C2P stopped working too. I switched to Chrome2Mobile (I think is what it's called) extention on my desktop, it works again and that ext lets me send links to my iPad too.
i only ever remember this working with gingerbread on my ns4g. from ics on, the restore feature has only been good for wallpaper and wifi passwords
I found a potential fix
I want to preface this by saying I wasn't having the same problem as you all are having when I log back into my google account after flashing my apps start downloading. My issue is that after it started I ended up in area without service(subway) and then half of my apps failed. I didn't feel like clicking each and re downloading them. The only thing I could think of was signing out of my google account which supposedly wipes your info and then signing back in to restart the sync and it worked for me so try it out and let me know if it works for you all. If it does please Thank this is only like my 2nd post here.

Thanks for the idea, seems like it had some potential.
I tried signing out of my google account, then signing back in... and it still didn't help get the auto restore going.
Any other ideas?

-clear cache/data

Maybe try a factory reset? I don't have any issues, and its always the first thing I do when I get a new phone.

anyone else experiencing this issue? I am only showing 370/408 contacts. I tried to troubleshoot this with google and they couldn't figure it out. They reassured me that it would eventually sync.
Yup. Same issue, only on an OG Pixel XL.
yes, same issue, even reset phone twice now to try and get it to work
giving errors at time also if I try to add a new one.
Same here on smaller Pixel 2 on 8.1. WTF Google. Do they ever test their ****?
So I do frequent the Pixel 2 XL forum b/c I had one and returned it but looking to get another if the price drops. Point of me posting now though is that I am still using my 6P and having this issue as well. So looks like google messed up something. Luckily they released a december patch for 8.0 as well so I'm going to do that instead since I'm missing contacts that I frequently communicate with. No clue how they can mess up something so simple.
edit: also, my win10 laptop will not recognize the phone in MTP mode unless usb debugging is on. 8.0 didn't have that issue either. I did freshly flash twice and factory reset just in case but that made no difference with the contacts issue nor the MTP mode not working without USB debugging on.
Just a note, the issue exists on the 8.1 stable, and on the 8.0 stable. I don't think it's related to the update, it's an issue with contacts itself.

I was just coming back in here to mention that. I clean flashed back to 8.0 with dec security patch for my 6P and those same contacts are missing. Not sure what channel to go through to report this issue.

I found if you go to the old contacts UI web interface, you can select people in your circles from G+. At least for my contacts, everyone that had a linked G+ account had that profile URL in the contact entry.
I just got my Pixel 2 XL today, immediately flashed 8.1.....and I have this problem.
I exported all my contacts to csv, removed the profile columns, deleted all Gmail contacts, and re imported

Thank God for XDA, I was going nuts after noticing half of my contacts were gone, including my wife's, mom and brother. Thought it was related to the 8.1 update but guess not. Hopefully we get a fix later tonight or tomorrow.
I have the same issue. Brand New Pixel... I thought it was defective. Just pulled it out the box and when it didn't sync I thought i had a major issue so I did the google support call and the rep told me it was a known issue and should be resolved in 1 to 2 days.
Funny, I was just noticing the same. And it's bad because one of the missing contacts is my wife! Lol
This is not a 8.1 or a Pixel issue, I tested it on a Nexus 5 on Marshmallow by removing and re-adding my account and it also happened there. Took me a few factory resets to finally figure it out cause I was setting up a new Pixel 2 XL by copying from another phone. I realized that as soon as the phone is copied all the contacts are there on the new phone, but after a contact sync some go away, so I just tuned contact sync off immediately after entering Android on first boot. I'm gonna wait it out until they fix it on their end.
Hi everyone,
So today I decided to make a factory reset because of the battery drain since the January Update.
I take care to made a googledrive backup (sms, call, etc...) before the factory reset.
After the configuration of the phone, I'm not enable to use the backup I made on google drive. I can't do anything (just delete it).
Somebody have a solution?
I had the same issue with my last but I think by doing another reset I was able to get it to restore from my Google backup.

Yeah, but what I had in mind is that you have the option to "skip" all the Google sign in stuff during the initial initialization of the device, which might be a detriment to what the OP is trying to secure...

Mmmm...that was a good idea, but my advice was more along the lines of resetting the device again, and to be sure to input your Google account information right at the "get-go" when it first asks when first setting up the device...not merely removing the account and re-signing the account in...
it seems that there are restorative protocols that are only "in play" when first setting up the device; i.e. you can't transfer data from one's old device using the included data cable at any other point than when first setting up the device/Pixel 2 XL...
Update.
I did a second Factory reset and by passing by the step of "transfert from an old phone" I re-enter my Google account and since this moment it give me the choice to choose each update I would like to install (from the Drive)
