Correct Procedure of Flashing ROM + Other ZIP Files - LineageOS Questions & Answers

Hi
I'm trying to flash Lineage OS onto a couple of devices one being the Moto G 4G (Thea) and the other the Nexus 7 2013 WiFi (Flo). The ROM installed by itself works perfectly fine even with OpenGApps, but, I'm having difficulties with apps constantly crashing as soon as I include OpenGApps and a Zip file made from Android Zip File Creator found here
https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software-hacking/tool-6-feb-android-flashable-zip-t3551772.
There are so many combinations in what order I flash the zip files and wipe partitions; I can either flash them separately with a wipe cache and dalvik in between, or I could flash them in bulk and then wipe cache and dalvik at the end. Most of the time whilst using TWRP, I have to do an advanced wipe, and then reboot into TWRP before I can flash the ROM otherwise I get a reboot in the early installation of OpenGApps.
Has anyone got instructions on the order I should install my zip files please?

I don't think there are special tricks necessary. Simply wipe system, data and caches. Flash ROM, GApps and your personal zip. Try to bake the zip with a different tool like https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/dev-shadow53s-flashable-zip-builder-t3671119

Are the APK files specific to the different architectures of Android or are they generic?

Flashing a ROM (JellyTime)

I got a simple question about flashing a rom, at this point its JellyTime.
I'm not really familiar with the order that you need to flash and if you need to flash the kernel separately?
My order is now:
- clean/wipe
- Flash ROM
- Flash gapps
- fastboot flash boot.img (is this step required, or does this already happen when flashing the ROM?)
Then the follow-up question is, does it affect the ROM when you boot the first time with an older kernel?

You can flash the kernel basically anytime. I usually dirty flash kernels with no problem.
Also, no need to fastboot the boot.img. The rest of your order looks fine.
My order :
- format all partitions (except sdcard)
- wipe cache/dalvik
- Flash ROM
- Flash gapps
- fixing permissions
- Reboot
But i think your steps should be fine as well.

How do you fix permissions ?
When I flashed gapps I saw that in the end its fixing permissions. Do I need to something manually ?

You can fix permissions using recoveries like 4ext and stuff...remember to wipe cache and davlik if you are flashing just kernel.
Like he said use recovery 4ext there's an option at "tools".

Wiping cache+dalvik cache is redundant after formatting all partitions. A lot of people have this habit and recommend it, but its unnecessary. Dalvik-cache is located in the data partition. It's nothing special, its a folder there like any other, and contains classes.dex files for all apps on the device. When you format all partitions, data is formatted, so the dalvik-cache is wiped along with it. And the cache partition is formatted anyway. So wiping cache+dalvik again after formatting all partitions is of no use and unnecessary.

You don't need to wipe cache and dalvik after flashing a kernel. I used to do it too, but many times the devs themselves have said it isn't required. Lord Clockan said many times that wiping cache+dalvik is unnecessary after flashing a new kernel. When you think about it, it makes sense. Dalvik cache just contains classes.dex files for all the apps on the device and nothing else. When the dalvik-cache is rebuilt after a wipe, it pulls the classes.dex from each apk and puts it in the dalvik-cache folder (please correct me if I'm wrong). This isn't in any way related to the kernel and what it does. Regardless of the kernel flashed, the dalvik cache will remain the same. So it shouldn't make sense to wipe it for every kernel flash.

Hello, I did all of the steps in this order and ROM is booting OK. But after that I have random freezes while doing different tasks (taking picture, going to settings, after unlock). Do you have any suggestions what can I do/change to fix this. This is happening on all Jelly Time releases - i tried R3, R4, R5.1 and also AOKP V6. When I flash IcoColdSandwich everything is running without problem.
I will appreciate your help. Thank you!
My order :
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache
- wipe dalvik
- Flash ROM
- Flash gapps
- fixing permissions
- Reboot
Thanks, that makes it clear.
So its possible that you flash the kernel when you are flashing the ROM!

[Q] [Xperia S] CM10 Installation problems

Hello.
I was running cm9 for a few months without problems. But since the update from Januari the 13th apps started crashing.. I then tried to completly reinstall (wipe everthing), but got stuck on bootloop. Then I thought lets try cm10, and also I get stock on the booting screen.
These are the steps I did.
Flashed LT26i_6.1.A.2.50_1257-5499_WORLD.ftf to go back to stock rom.
Went trough the wizard and all and let it settle down for a few minutes.
Shutdown.
Fastboot boot.img from FXP202-cm-10-20130110-UNOFFICIAL-nozomi.zip
Fastboot reboot
Enter recovery
Flash rom FXP202-cm-10-20130110-UNOFFICIAL-nozomi.zip
Flash gapps gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvik
Reboot system
But it never boots, I get stuck on bootscreen (same procedure I did with CM9, but also got stuck on bootscreen),
What am I doing wrong?
Try doing full wipe and reinstall CM 10 as you did previously

I tried that too. Like this you mean
1. Fastboot boot.img
2. Fastboot reboot
3. Enter recovery
4. Factory reset
5. Wipe/format system, cache, data, dalvik
6. Install Rom zip
But then I get error and says installation aborted..

And take that cm-10-20130110-UNOFFICIAL is CM 10.2 for such reason look for JB Gapps For Android version 4.1.2
I flashed the Rom very well, also the kernel. my problem were the Gapps. I see there that you do not have the correct gapp zip for cm-10-20130110-UNOFFICIAL;This is CM 10.2 after installation and you need a 4.1.2 JB Gapps. Try and repeat the process.

I do have the correct gapps. This CM is android version 4.1.2. Here I downloaded the latest for CyanogenMod 10.0.x which is for android versions 4.1.x.
Anyway after a whole evening/night of flashing I finally managed to get it working via hei1125 cm10 version:
http://goo.im/devs/hei1125/nozomi
I dont know what I did to make it working again, but it does.. CM10 does look a lot nicer then CM9. Although I heard it has some bugs, which yet I still have to encounter..
FXP202-cm-10-20130110-UNOFFICIAL-nozomi.zip fails

I'm on the same problem. Use FXP201 instead or wait until 203... The cm10-fxp202 doesn't work on my device too. Same procedure as Yours or update from 201 to 202 - all will fail on (my) nozomi.
Hello!
Hello! orange fix for this rom?if so, I would like to link to it? thank you very much :fingers-crossed:
Had same problem with fxp202 ans SSpeed rom.
Just try to install another kernel.
I had same problems with rom's above, I installed nova kernel nozimi and I have no problems anymore.

Hello,
I have a problem updating my nozomi (xperia s) to the newest cm version. I always get error 7 - some symlinks failed and i cant install an update without factory reset / wipe user data. After this step i can install the zip, but without wipeing, always the same error.
When i'm installing updates on my girlfriend's urushi (xperia ray), everything works fine.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Enable signaturecheck in recovery before install. It worked for me.

It's always recommend to wipe all (cache, davlink even system) then flash.
Be sure to mount system and then try.
And of course, check is you zip file o.k (maybe download again)
Even if you updating cm to new version it's best if you wipe.
I know that's lot of work, but only then you'll have good battery life, smooth and fast ROM and stability.

I had just the same problem today. I installed cm10 from recovery and did everything you did!!!!
What i did to solve this prblem is:
- Went into recovery.
- wiped cache and dalvik.
- flashed the latest CM10 (FXP215 to be precise) again!!
- flashed gapps again!!
- after flashing both zips I wiped dalvik and cache again.
- Than reboot.
If you keep getting into bootloops, keep doing these steps. Beliefe me man I had the exect same problam today and this solved it . Just dont panic or do something stupid and have alot of patients! :good:
But this is not a so called clean install. I use factory reset to have a clean install or just wipe data partition. After 1st boot I restore only some of my saved data with titanium backup.

[Q] updating a ROM to latest build

I'm using TeamCanjica CyanogenMod 10.2. Each time I've installed a new ROM on any device I've always gone for the full wipe and flash (Data/cache/davlik) but I am wondering if I am simply updating an existing version do I need to wipe data/factory reset?
This is the procedure I'd have thought would work:
Download latest zip (Only ROM? I already have the latest GAPPS)
boot into recovery
wipe cache + davlik
flash zip
wipe cache + davlik
reboot
Would this update work and keep all my data/settings etc or would this likely cause problems with the build? If it wouldn't work is there a way to update without losing everything?
Cheers

[Q] How to flash wicked rom on tmobile galaxy s4?

is it just download the file, reboot in recovery, and wipe.. then flash?
what is aroma installer? and how to differentiate the diff between the tmo roms and the others when they don't have tmo in the name?

All tmobile M919 custom roms are located in the Tmobile M919 forum.
Does not matter what the name of the rom is or what the filename is.
Be sure to do a full wipe before flashing any roms.
A full wipe includes Cache, Dalvik Cache, System, Data
and last but not least a factory reset it twrp or cwm recovery.
Be sure to make a nandroid backup in recovery before flashing anything.
Good luck!
Aroma installer is an installer that will give you a list of options you want in the ROM and will then install the ROM based on your selections.. And I agree with Misterjunky, just follow his steps and you can't go wrong.. Except I would say a data wipe is not really necessary because that will wipe your internal SD

so its just like installing any other rom? you don't need an installer to do it? you just flash it with like twrp or something? that's what im trying to ask
Its just like any other ROM. The difference is that aroma has an interface which let's you pick and choose what you want installed. A lot of the aroma installers include themes and other mods you'd have to download and flash separately all-in-one. Its not even necessary to wipe before an aroma installation because it includes the option to fully wipe and/or just wipe caches. Hope that helps

Ok ima make it as clear as possible, it looks like you've rooted your phone and have a custom recovery, many people recommend team win recovery project (twrp) to install wicked, but if you can't find it that's fine, go into the playstore and download and App called ROM MANAGER now after you install it select RECOVERY SET UP and flash clock work mod recovery, you really don't need twrp I know that because I use cwm.
anyways once you have the recovery installed download wicked but before you flash it make sure that the MD5 matches the one on the website you've downloaded it from the md5 can be found on your file browser but you'll need file manager from the playstore and now look at the details for wicked and the md5 will be loading for a bit and once it's done it will show u the code so now make sure it matches otherwise it will just give u an error when you flash it.
Ok so now that you're ready to flash the rom, if your using twrp select wipe or wipe data, and it will automatically wipe you cache, dalvik and factory reset. For cwm press FACTORY RESET, WIPE CACHE and then go to ADVANCED and select WIPE DALVIK CACHE and now go to INSTALL ZIP (both recoveries) and select the 0/ folder and go to downloads and select it and it will take you to another set up and that's the aroma installer.
Now that you're in it just keep going forward until you see what you want installed from what theme you want, apps from Samsung and tmobile, other cameras from other phones like nexus or the Google edition of the s4 and once you keep pressing all the way to the end it will say GET WICKED and it will install whatever you've selected on aroma, then after it finishes it will say REBOOT and once the phone takes u to the set up screen don't touch it, leave there for 5-10 mins and then reboot and that's it
