will unlocking my bootloader wipe my user data AND internal storage? - Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro Questions & Answers

okay, the title pretty much said it all
I know it wipes the user data (equivalent to factory reset, or wiping data in TWRP)
but does unlocking the bootloader also wipes everything on my internal storage too, like my songs, photos etc?

yes for security reasons EVERYTHING will be deleted barring the original stock rom. you photos, songs, adult stuff, apps contacts messages everything

absolutely yes!

Factory reset wipe?

Now I think I know the answer, but by doing a factory reset wipe, do I delete the files on my SD?
It has begun...
I actually had a question like this too, if I were to factory wipe my SD card, would I loose root? I've wanted to start from scratch with as much of a clean slate as I could without losing root to make my own ROM, just didn't know how close I could actually get.
Still need this answered, any help is appreciated.
No its like when you do data wipe in recovery.
FACTORY RESET WIPE will erase all user info from internal storage. Dloaded apps, contacts, accounts... This will not erase any contents of the SDcard.
FORMAT SDCARD will erase all memory stored on card.
Edit: you will not lose root from factory reset.
Info appreciated.

[Q] How do I format the internal storage and flash with cwm

I've had a bit of a nightmare tonight, I rooted and cwm my nexus within the first hour of ownership and flashed modaco pauls rom however after a couple of days of messing around I found myself wondering how to format the internal storage but still be able to flash via cwm. Have poked around I've found you are able to push the rom via adb while in cmw so again no problem except selecting "wipe" from ics doesnt really format the partition the storage, while when the phone is running and plugged into the computer you seem to have a fresh storage area however the free space is still taking into account of old files. And when I went back to cwm it clearly still showed the old deleted files which seems strange. The only way i was able to clear everything was via the storage menu with ics deleting folders one at a time ?!
So my question is......
Which is the best way to format the internal storage area and once completed am i able to push my rom onto the phone and flash correctly?
Same problem here.
Even with wiping and formatting data, cache, system, dalvik cache and even a factory reset from the running Android, I still have old data from non-present apps in my app list.
Download the Super Wipe script from the Android Revolution HD thread, flash it in CWM and voila - completely formatted phone (bar the user data like pictures, music, etc)
Simplest way is to re-lock and re-unlock back the bootloader

Will this has any effect on rom / root?

All your apps will have to be re-downloaded from the play store and you lose all progress in games, etc. But no none of your pictures or music is affected (I'm 99% sure). I save my pictures to my SD Card though..
Factory data / wipe reset is only for the rom itself, as Joe said everything is lost EXCLUDING your internal / external storage.
But if your planning on literally cleaning your phone id suggest backing up all of your important stuff thats in your intSdCard
and exSdCard move the important stuff to your PC/Mac/Linux and then do an internal + external storage wipe just to
remove the left over stuff from apps that save files / temp files into your sdcards.
However you can backup your apps using Titanium Backup Root and move the TitaniumBackup folder to your PC
to backup your apps + data. I've been jumping roms as well and doing full blown wipes for everything ( Data / Cache / Davlik / internal
/ external ) and titanium backup is a MUST if you want to keep most of your apps with data.
However if those apps get buggy ( FC, won't start etc ) then you'll need to wipe the apps data .
All in all, that should be it. Hope this helps, and i hope you enjoy using the JB Goodness rom

do nandroid backups work properly?

i've been trying out new CM10.1 nightlies and nothing has worked as well as 3/17, so i keep reflashing my 3/17 nandroid backup. however, ive noticed that after 1 or two times of doing that, the phone battery has sucked and my data connection is acting funky.
when restoring from nandroid, does it basically wipe the phone and restore it exactly back to how it was, or do files from frequent flashing and trials of other nightlies still stick around?
if so it is the latter, would i benefit from moving my backup to my external SD card, doing a total wipe of the phone 100%, and reflashing the nandroid backup?
At the very least you should wipe cache, dalvic, and factory reset, which you could've learned from a simple search.
When you dirty flash rom updates and backups, you begin to run into these small bugs. Layering your software like this will add up. It's safe to keep a copy of your backup on your sd card, yes. If you perform a full wipe (wipe data, cache, dalvik, and system) you will be removing the OS entirely and allowing for a completely clean install. That's what I recommend. Since you are not formatting/wiping data, you will not lose any.

much appreciated. i did a full system wipe 100% and just restored from the nandroid fresh (it had worked before all teh crazy flashing.).
thanks!
Just to add to this thread, a Nandroid does not capture everything.
Such as, if you have maps saved to your internal SD card from a navigation app, those maps are not picked up as part of the nandroid.
I make a habit of copying my internal SD card contents onto my computer and then restoring them after restoring a Nandroid.

Clean wipe along with internal storage wipe? Consequences on phone?

I have rooted phones for years and am currently on a debloated Verizon LG v30 vs99630c rom. In all these years, all of my "clean" wipes have constituted of a factory reset and/or a cache, dalvik, system and data wipe. I have never done an internal storage wipe of my phone. I am wondering exactly what happens if I do an internal storage wipe either by itself or with the clean wipe. Does that wipe my external SD card (should I remove it before wiping?) Does it do anything to my sim card (I have never removed it)?
Would I have an operating system (vs99630c?) on my phone or in twrp to install? Would I still be rooted? I would like to start with a clean phone with zero on it (except the debloated rom).
Or is a factory reset and my Google sign on the same thing? I did do a clean factory reset yesterday, but not an internal storage wipe, but would kind of like to, as long as I still have my Verizon phone and root.
All of this would need to be done only on my phone and in twrp, NOT connected to a computer.
Thx, for any help, advice, answers and suggestions.
Please make them, if any, in a dummies sort of way.

Look at WTF Section 6, Step 7a, 7f, 7g. Yes it's written for installing TWRP, but those three steps are what you're asking about. See attached screenshot.
7a is factory reset. You've done that several times.
7f is where you reformat your internal memory, where you type YES. (Then, Step 7g is just reloading TWRP from within TWRP, to refresh it.)
BUT, you do NOTwant to wipe out your OS. That's a step too far. Some people have done that. And in those cases they had to reinstall their OS through a zip file, as well as disable checker and disable encryption. They did this, either by dragging files over from PC (while still in TWRP, like a flash drive) OR by already having those files on microSD card. microSD card is not touched, either thorough proper data reformat or by accidentally destroying the Android OS.
If you completely wipe internal memory the wrong way, then you will need those three files on a microSD card -- or by connecting to a PC to drag them over -- so you can reinstall them.
But if you do it the right way, then you will not need those files. You will still have your OS but just with reformatted data. Which is a more thorough than normal factory reset. That's why factory reset is 7a, but reformatting data is 7f.
When you install TWRP, you have to do them both. Your TWRP is already installed, you're just going to revisit those two steps to have a very clean phone.
NOTE:. after doing this you will still need to re-flash Magisk, of course. So best to have that on microSD card, also!
Good luck!
