Would someone with the US version look at the version number of the default phone app and tell me what it is. For some odd reason I don't have it on my phone so I installed version 3.0.20.25 from apkmirror and I just want to check if that's the latest version. I said US version because I don't know if the version numbers change according to country. I only discovered this when I was trying to test the sensors and the access codes wouldn't work with the Google dialer. I also don't have a clue as to why it wasn't installed on my phone.
Thanks
The dialer app is actually called "Contacts"

That's what I figured but there was no option in my contacts app to access the dialer. If I didn't dial a contact, there was no other option...weird. I was trying to avoid a reset just for that so that's why I went to apkmirror. I'm pretty sure contacts had the dial option when I got the phone and I did install the Google dialer because I like it more but I can't see why that would affect the Contacts dialer. BTW, I did uninstall the Google dialer to check if that was disabling it somehow.
EDIT: What version of Contacts do you have? This is turning into one big mystery that has me puzzled.

Mine is 3.8.20.11
The dialer part is just a small hovering circle icon with the number pad image on it at the lower right side of each part of the contacts app
You just press that and the dialler slides up, there is no actual dedicated tab for it
My guess is that the contacts app was no longer set as default for dialler because of the Google one

All I have is the plus for adding a contact. It is still the default phone app also. I guess for now I'll leave the Samsung phone app installed and use that. Thanks
EDIT: My version of contacts is 3.8.01.20 and that has to be what came on my phone. I tried to install the version you have but it wouldn't install over the system version I already have.

Yea since Oreo you can no longer manually update system apps
There are 3 "phone" apps too if you enable "Show system apps" in Settings > Apps, one is the contacts app for some reason now called phone, and the other two are probably needed for the dialler I would assume

Yep it's a mystery. ? I'm doing a complete restore now but I'm still on that older version and still no dialer symbol after the restore. I do have the three phone apps also.

The app version will differ with different firmware, I'm guessing yours is a snapdragon, mine is the Exynos with O2U CSC firmware
Might be able to fix it by just flashing the same firmware over the top though, no data loss and "should" repair system files

I hope that I am posting this in the correct sub-forum...
I installed go dialer on my rooted evo and set it on my launcher pro dock. Though it seems when I receive a phone call, it comes through myn's warmm 2.2 dialer instead of go dialer. When I go to settings>apps>manage>dialer, the clear defaults button is grayed out.
I was not asked to set the default dialer when i opened go dialer, and do not see any options in go dialer's settings to fix this.
What do?
Thanks.
try this... goto menu-settings-applications-all applications then find the stock dialer, click it, and then if you can, click on the "clear defaults" button, that should stop the phone from thinking that the stock dialer is the default one, and prompt you on which dialer you want to use when u hit the phone button
EDIT: sorry re-read the post... and see that u have already tried that....so if you go to ur app list... and click godialer. it doesn't ask you if you want the default. are you sure that your shortcut is pointed to go dialer?
The "incoming call" feature is a part of the sense dialer. It won't go away. You only use Go Dialer to make outgoing calls and look through your call history pretty much. If you're referring to after a phone call it drops you back into the sense dialer, that's unavoidable at this point as far as I know with Go Dialer.

I don't have any experience with go dialer and sense, but in Salvage-Mod it drops me back to Go Dialer after a call (it asked me once and I set it to the default).
But otherwise, in call, my screen is the AOSP gingerbread dialer, I don't think Go Dialer even has an in-call screen.
Yes, I believe this is not fixable as its the Sense dialer taking control.
boo.
I fixed it by using the paid version of "Not Call Log" and Go Dialer.
Nothing else worked. I tried all the free versions of the 'fixes' and they all stopped working or only had partial success.
Man, the stock Streak dialer is one UGLY beast. Bleh!
It was worth $1.00 to me.
Select "Contacts" instead of "Dialer" in Settings > Applications > All
Clcik "Clear defaults" then go home and press dial button.

I fear this is wrong; the "Clear defaults" button is dimmed here also on my 2.3.6 Samsung Galaxy Note. Did you try it out? Additionally, it sound like it would only apply to outgoing calls, not to incoming calls!
Thanks your suggestion worked.

I have the same problem so I ended going back to MikMik 3.11 rom flashed inverted theme and then installed ADW Launcher with ICS theme and then V6 supercharge, my Evo 4G is super responsive and fast.
Also I think since I'm using ADW Launcher as default the Sence framework does not load so you cannot get many of their widgets. I get similar widgets I use HD widgets, Pro Widget.
ICS roms are becoming much more stable now but the camera issue and no 4G are always the reason I go back to MikMik 3.11/Anthrax kernel. All I need from ISC rom is the email widget but have not been able to find any similar ones in the market.
So try MikMik 3.11 then use a different launcher.
If this help click Thank you button, I only have 1 so far.
OK Later.

thanks it work for me... most of the time i drive with phone on landscape mode go dialer have this feature same as cyanogedmod 7.2 dialer but with themes from market.
How do you enable dialing contacts by spelling out their name on the dial pad? This was my most heavily used feature on my TB. I'm hoping I don't have to flash a custom rom just for this! .. thx!
I know I'm using the exDialer which supports both speed dial (long press a single number) and the dial by name feature. Both of which are lacking from the stock dialer.
I'm also using exDialer and I like it a lot. Way better than the stock dialer.
After you bring up the dialer hit the search button bottom right.

Yes that feature sux as it requires 5+ clicks as opposed to dialing it directly....
honestly there are tons of features that are just missing from this phone that I used all the time on my TB...
like a global search button (?!? wtf google) I never use the google search bar... and I wish I could reverse the home / back buttons...and remove altogether the recent apps button (I never use that either).... i guess my only option is a custom rom? any good ones out there that allow this? Or do I have to replace the launcher? I'd rather not do that tho bc i dont want any lag..... thx!
I use exdialer as well. If you're on a custom rom, there's a cm9 dialer that adds this functionality, but it doesn't work on stock roms.
Use the microphone icon on the google search bar on the homepage. "Call Dave on mobile". Works fine for me.

Yea I'm sure it works but I'd rather not announce who im calling to the whole room sometimes... dial by voice has its benefits but its just not for me I guess..

Oh sweet... thanks!
This was actually something that I thought would be included in ICS stock dialer. Really surprised Google hasn't figured this one out yet. Oh well.
As many others have already stated, exDialer is a free app available on the market that satisfies all your smart-dialing needs. There's even a free ICS theme available as well. I truly love this dialer in comparison to the stock ICS dialer, which was lacking so much - which I noticed right away when I got my GNex. All is well now though with exDialer installed.
Texting as well?
A little off topic but today I transferred all my contacts from my Evo3d to my Nexus. This evening I tried to send a text message and thought I could just type the contact's name into the To: field and have the phone pick it up from my contacts list. It didn't happen. Am I missing something?
thx ill check it out
one weird thing that i've noticed is the avatars for my friends in the contact list is super low resolution for some reason... its the contacts that have facebook "linked" to each contact - any idea how to fix this? It should be showing the full resolution of the image not a 120x120 pixelated image.....
also how to search the contact list for duplicates? HTC does this automatically and suggests that contacts be "linked"..... but on the GN, you have to do it contact by contact which is a PITA when you have 400+ contacts..... ideas? Thx everyone for the help!

switch to go sms pro - its much better than the stock app! be sure to disable the notifications of the stock sms app after u install it.
Pure Android Nexus & AOSP Roms don't include the feature the OP is looking for.
Just to answer the OP's question, pure Google Android Nexus phones have never included the feature you are looking for, same goes for most AOSP roms. CM doesn't include it either.
Seems silly, I don't know why, I always dial people by putting in the first few letters of their name also and the number pops up. Wish the pure Nexus line included that.
Stock 4.02 ROM rooted/unlocked.
So I was changing some stuff around on my home screen and dragged the "contacts" app that was in the bottom bar into the trash can. I was planning to just use the contacts I can see under the phone icon, but now I realize that only lets me dial contacts and not see all the contact info I have for them. Also, a few recent contacts I added aren't showing up online from my desktop. My phone says it's still succesfully syncing my contacts. I don't see "contacts" in my app drawer (but I don't know if it ever shows up there.) Did I uninstall the contacts app, or am I just missing a setting somewhere to make it display?
Well the app is called "People"... I'm assuming that's what you mean.
If you're on the stock launcher, there's no trash can for pre-installed apps. You can only see "App Info" to disable it. You can't uninstall with 1 drop.
If you're rooted and using a custom Launcher, it may have a "trash can" to long-hold onto to uninstall, and if you're rooted it may offer a full uninstall of system apps.
Gonna need more info here...

No problemo.
Running CM10.1.2, I noticed that the calendar on it (jenkins), is not as up to date as the Google calendar app. I tried installing the Google one, but (1) the installed name was some random hexadecimal string and, (2) more importantly, caused significant problems with everything.
Can we replace the CM calendar or will it be updated with the new features from the Google calendar?
Replace the cm calendar. I just disable it in app settings and install the play store version. I've never had any of the problems you described, but you might try rebooting, reinstalling the app, and clearing calendar app cache and calender storage data

Disabling the CM calendar got rid of the significant problems, but the name still shows as "#ff000000" in the App Drawer. Plus some of the settings text are either "#ffdddddd" or "#ffeeeeee". Functionality is fine though, so I guess I'll keep it! Thanks!
Edit: Well, it got rid of some problems....
Those odd names are hexadecimal codes, and they look like colors. For instance, #ff000000 is solid black. I think you have a very odd issue, maybe a third party launcher like nova that lets you custom name apps? You may be in for a clean ROM install...

Not sure why it thinks it should display a color instead of regular text. I'm pretty much using stock CM10.1.2 with no significant customizations.
After trying to reply yes to an calendar event from gmail, it FCed.

In the stock dialer, it requires more steps to get to one's contact list or dialer pad (for T9 dialing)
Has anyone found a good way to open the dialpad directly from a homescreen shortcut, or access favorite contacts directly?

thanks - I have GB and the option checked, but it doesn't do anything for me
tried using secure settings to access all the child activities under the phone app as parent, but none of those worked either
the multiple steps just to make a phone call is frustrating ... guess as time goes by, devs start to forget that the smartphone is actually meant to be used as a phone (too)!
