Connecting a Firestick v3 to Fritz!Box VPN - Possible? - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got myself a Fritz!Box 5970 and am now setting it all up, including its VPN server.
It uses IPSec Xauth, and so far I've successfully managed to connect both my iPhone and Android (7) tablet to it. However I'm now facing trying to link my Firestick (version 3, the current retail one) to it and am having issues as of course there's no VPN functionality included by default in FireOS.
I've looked through the various apps available and all I can see are proprietary ones linked to providers servers only (IPVanish, PureVPN and suppliers like that), or an OpenVPN one which doesn't seem to support IPSec Xauth (or at least i can't get it to work).
Does anyone know a method of making such a connection, using either a sideloaded app or something directly available?

VPN issues on Rooted EVO.. help!

I'm not certain if this is a kernel, ROM or software issue. I am running Fresh ROM 1.0.1 with the Netarchy 3.7.5 kernel, I have enabled the JIT compiler, and I have purchased the Xtralogic Remote Desktop Client version 1.14.0 and also use ES File Explorer for FTP/Samba.
I am able to authenticate and connect to our corporate VPN server. Once connected, I AM able to ping both from within the network to my device, and from adb-shell on my device to devices on the network. DNS resolution is working as expected over the VPN; search domains are setup properly.
However, upon establishing a connection (UDP or TCP) to any device on the remote network, my VPN connection dies (server side -- the android client still reads as connected). No bytes are received from the client anymore (per the corporate vpn software). I've tried this with RDP (UDP), SMB (UDP) and FTP (TCP). All three had the same result; upon initiating the socket, the VPN connection comes to a halt.
I know this worked when I was stock rooted.. and have only tried it again recently for a business trip in which RDP access to some remote servers would be a great big help. My changes are listed above: Fresh Rom 1.0.1, Netarchy 3.7.5 kernel, JIT enabled.
LogCat provides plenty of output for the VPN connection, but there is NOTHING logged when the "disconnect" occurs.
Any ideas?!
I received a response from the software vendor:
I received other reports about problem with VPN on Android. Unfortunately I don't have any solution to this problem. It is not RDP client specific, it looks like it is triggered by certain amount of network traffic. You will get the same result if you try to browse Internet on the phone when connect over VPN.

So, I ask if anyone can confirm or deny from their own device?

PPTP VPN client on FTV

Hi, I have a ASUS router loaded with DD-WRT. I have enabled PPTP server on my router. I wish to connect to my router using this PPTP VPN natively from my FTV.
I can connect fine from my Windows 8 machine (and my IPhone), but not from FTV. I understand FTV has been stripped of VPN modules. I am able to successfully connect to my OPENVPN server on the same router from my FTV using a few google play apps like Tun.KO, OpenVPN settings and OPENVPN installer.
I am wondering if there is way to accomplish the same thing for the PPTP? I did try the VpnRoot application, but it gives me an error. Important 2 lines are:
-- Creating PPPoX socket --
-- Socket() Address family not supported by protocol
I researched this error and it seems like FTV (as we already know) is missing pppox.ko (or pppol2tp??) kernel module. Now, there are places to download the supporting files to build this module. I am not sure how to proceed on that (build and install). Or if there is a simpler way to install this on FTV? From my understanding, building modules on linux has to be targeted to the kernel version... So, I am lost and any help is appreciated.
Any luck figuring this out with PPTP?
No, I haven't looked at it furthur. I don't have a linux box, but I did free up some space on my HD to install Fedora. But, I am planning to take a crack at it soon! It would be nice if RBox can include the PPTP support in his pre-rooted ROMs... Not sure how difficult that is for him (yes, its a copout :crying
This might not address your initial question directly, but you can use a script to change iptables on the router to VPN only the IP of the AFTV:
http://serverfault.com/questions/38...-hosts-route-through-openvpn-client-on-tomato
Mind you, this is for Tomato, but DD-WRT uses scripts too. I'm using it with Tomato Shibby BUT with OpenVPN not PPTP...cannot comment on the latter.
I tried a few VPN clients on AFTV, no dice.
Thanks. There was a wiki on dd-wrt on how to selectively route VPN traffic for certain hosts. But don't have a need for it. But it is a good learning post and potentially helpful to folks trying to use VPN to access US based services and not wanting to buy an extra router just for that. Much appreciated.

SmartDNS service doesn't work anymore after Fire OS 5.0.5 update

I am using a smart DNS service (such as unblock-us / unlocator) on my Amazon Fire TV as well as on a Fire TV Stick, in order to watch shows in my home country language, as I am currently living in Germany.
The DNS setup was done directly on the Fire TV Box, not in my router due to limitations from my internet provider. When I started with the DNS service, everything worked like charme from the start. But yesterday evening my Fire TV got the update by Amazon onto OS version 5.0.5 (before it had an OS version called 51.1.6.3.) From this moment on, the DNS service stopped working on the Fire TV.
Everything is still set up correctly, but I just get the German content, no matter what region I have set in my DNS Service account. No error message though. I tried to restart the device, deleted and re-added the network with the DNS settings and restarted again, restarted the router, but nothing helped. I haven't done anything different than before. So I am quite sure, it has to do with the OS update by Amazon. The Fire TV Stick in the other room still has the former OS version (54.1.2.3.). There, everything still runs smooth as it used to be as well on the Fire TV box.
Is anyone here facing the same issues with the new Fire TV OS 5.0.5? Does anyone know how to solve this or what I can do different, to make it work again?
Thanks in advance for your help.
same !!!
I have same prob since update today.. I was using overp*ay
Any luck getting it sorted thx
One way around is to get your internet provider to bridge their modem (if it is build into router) and buy a good router you can set-up using a custom DNS/VPN
I talked to the u*locator support today (Smart DNS Service I use). They say it's because of IPv6 that seems to break their service. Under settings → system → about → network, the DNS is not in IPv4 but IPv6 format. Apparently Android 5.1 (Fire OS 5.0.5) and my cable provider plus the Fritz!Box Router I am forced to use by them don't go well together in this combination. Former OS version was based on Android 4.2.2. - no problems. I found several reported issues in other contexts (smartphone wifi, smartphone push notifications, etc.) with the keywords IPv6 in combination of Android Lollipop, my ISP and the router I gotta use. So it seems I am unlucky with this combination.
So does anyone have a hint, what workaround options I have?
- downgrade to the former OS? How can that be done?
- would rooting and disable IPv6 on the Fire TV be a possibility?
- (bridging the modem as bula1ca said is unfortunately no option with my ISP)
I heard wired connections on the firetv box doesnt have this problem but im curious to know the fix because I have a fire tv stick
So I got a solution! Inspired by bula1ca's post, I am additionally using an old TP-Link Router now (TL-WR841ND), which doesn't support IPv6. No rocket science. I just connected the WAN Port of that Router with a free LAN port of my original Fritz!Box, set up a wireless network on that old router and changed DNS to my smart DNS service in DHCP settings. So now I have an additional wireless network that I only use with the Fire TV and my Fire TV Stick. Result: The Fire TV doesn't get a IPv6 DNS anymore, but only Ipv4. Works like a charme.

Happy that worked for you however some modems need to be "bridged" before you can use your own router.
My router is a Fritzbox and I'm using it in bridge mode. I have simply disabled ipv6 support for the home network:
-DNSv6-Server in Home Network - DNSv6-Server through Router Advertisement (RFC 5006) - off
-DHCPv6-Server in Home network - deactivate
SmartDns is working again even over a Wlan connection. Other router brands might also have this possibility
I'm facing the same problem with IPv6/IPv4.
How do you connect WAN with LAN ports etc., and what else needs to be done how so that the FireTV can eventually work with an IPv4 address?

See my answer above. You have to find a way to disable IPV6 DNS in your home network.
-You might be able to do it in your router settings
-if your router doesn't allow switching it off attach another hardware (router) to your WAN cable modem's port where it is possible to do so/or the router is an old pre-ipv6 model where it is off anyway.
Just connecting the firetv to a lan port won't help unless you have a special router setup

I can't disable IPv6 since my ISP is just providing IPv6 addresses. If I disable that within my router, there's no internet connection.
How do I setup another router via WAN? That may actually work. Do you happen to have a step-by-step guide how to do that?
Thanks.

You don't have to disable IPV6 completely, just for your home network (if your router supports it). - in case you get a dual stack IPV6 (you get an IPV4 and IPV6 address assigned the same time)
How to do it exactly, how to use a different router and what is possible for you, you would better ask in forums of your internet provider. (I had to request my internet provider to switch the router/cable moden they gave me to bridge modus, than I was able to hook up a different router on the LAN1 port of my cable modem - I needed it before for different purposes)
Your options are very much dependent on your internet provider and hardware you own, but basicly your goal is the have IPV4-only DNS on your home network
Not an option, sorry.
My router won't allow full disabling of IPV6 unfortunately.
I have just heard from unblockr.net a SmartDNS provider, and they suggest that it would potentially help to disable this.
My traffic is definitely being routed via their servers as I can connect to the DNS servers fine, but it won't unblock geoblocked content for a certain country I'm aiming for which is a shame.

What kind of router do you have that can't handle this simple setting?

TigerVPN on a unrooted firestick

Hi All,
So I bought tigerVPN and I have the amazon firestick (bought earlier this year not Alexa) which is running on FireOS 5.2.4.1. I've managed to get OpenVPN onto my firestick via sideloading and managed to import my .ovpn files and config file, i've even managed to connect to VPN using OpenVPN, however when I click on Netflix i'm still getting geographically locked. Am I right in guessing that the OpenVPN app is connected but my firestick is ignoring the application.
Is there anyway that I could use tigerVPN with my firestick?
Thanks,
ssjdx1
Most VPN provider IP address are known to Netflix and thereby are blocked. They are not blocking VPN's but the commercials ISP who provide servers and rack space to the VPN companies. There are a few companies that have seemd to have solved the Netflix problem, Express and Surfbouncer I know for sure. If you have someone in the country where you want to watch that has fast Internet and is willing to let you put a small VPN server there that would be the 100% foolproof solution. Just look up Raspberry Pi VPN Server on Google for several tutorials. Or the device Surfbouncer is calling the behomebox which is essentially the do it yourself Raspberry Pi solution pre-configured
Thanks for your reply, however when i access netflix from my laptop with openvpn running i am able to access netflix from different countries therefore my vpn provider isn't the problem here, the issue is to do with the firestick ignoring openvpn.
Hi, guys I recently read Tiger VPN review: https://www.reviewsdir.com/tigervpn-review/ The price its offering is far better than other VPN providers. Check it out and tell me what your stance on it is?

VPN alternatives

This may not be a phone specific question, but I have new (currently unrooted) Pixel 3XL thus thought I would post here.
Without naming particular apps, I am trying to see if it is any longer possible to connect remotely to my home server(s) to be able to watch and stream various live tv programming. There used to be a modified app that was able to bypass the vpn options.
I have both OpenVPN and Shadowsocks Socks5 connnections created and working, and I can connect with either to my home network. However, it appears both of these still rely on making use of the Android VPN service, and I think that is why certain apps will not work over VPN?
I had thought Shadowsocks would not use the android VPN, but it appears to still does.
I have not tried anything else yet regarding SSH tunnel, etc., and open to any ideas if/how you may be able hide or mask your vpn connection from select apps on your phone.
Thanks,
