LG G3 D850 Slimport HDMI Out Stuck at 720p - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an LG G3 D850 with a broken screen that I want to use on a TV for streaming & gaming but I can only get it to output 720p. This Fosmon adapter is what I am using http://a.co/1MU3NNP.
I also have an LG G2 with a broken screen (my dad breaks a lot phones:laugh, I use the same adapter with & it does 1080p just fine. I have tried several different roms & forcing the screen resolution to 1080p but it still only outputs 720p. I would really like to upgrade from the G2 to the G3 for the SD card Slot. I would be willing to buy another adapter but the fact that this one works on the G2 and other people seem be successfully using it on the G3 makes me think it's not the problem.
Any suggestions?

[Q]USB to HDMI output only 720*480 resolution?

I just got a USB to HDMI cable, or can be called a MHL cable for my SGSII, but the output resolution was only 720*480(not 800*480, not 1080P, not 1080i) after the phone had been connected to the LCD screen(the screen reported this information).
I tried to set the monitor to "Full Screen" mode, but it just upscaled the image, the resolution still remained at 720*480.
Anyone has any idea about this problem?
BTW, I'm using the SiyahKernel with the stock ZSKI3 ROM.
Thanks!!
Open up the video player, it outputs at max resolution.
It does this because the system UI is running at a low resolution, so it can't output higher.
Like you I was under the distinct impression when I purchased my GS2 that the phone would output 1080p through MHL. Sadly this has not been the case. I was wondering if I was forgetting some setting but based on this thread it appears I'm not.
Wouldn't have been a deal breaker but it's still too bad.

Let's be clear.
The phone DOES output 1080p through the onboard video player. Open up a 1080p video and try it out.
Using the Samsung MHL adapter, I can do 1080i to my 32" Vizio (the only HDMI monitor I have access to). I see this resolution even when not running the video player; i.e. on the main "desktop" and app drawer screens. Of course, that's upscaled, but it still looks pretty good.
The Vizio supports 1080p, but for whatever reason, the MHL adapter won't provide it. I haven't spent a lot of time on this, but maybe I'll take another look at it over the weekend.

I did try the 1080P video playback as soon as I got the MHL, but like I said, the resolotion which the LCD screen reported is only 720*480, no matter in what kind of UI or application.
I had a LG Optimus 2x few months ago, and the HDMI on it worked perfectly with the same LCD screen.
Actually i noticed some interesting things when playing with the MHL. As i got a Samsung P2770HD screen i got basically all the connections. When i plug the phone directly by the HDMI plug screen reports full HD resolution (upscalled ofc, wondering if changing lcd density could give this some smoothness), but when i plug it trough the same cable but with a HDMI-DVI converter on the end the screen reports a lower resolution, phones native one if i remember correctly (which looks actually smooth and not pixelated, but i think there were all the fancy monitor's software enhancements on).

I've got a feeling you got this instead. www.ebay.com.au/itm/3-FT-Generic-Hi...AU_MobilePhoneAccessories&hash=item2567cc3a59
Excuse me, but at a first glance i dont think such cable could give any output at all, from what i understand of the mhl protocol the signal is different (quoting wikipedia "Other than the connectors being used, no USB nor HDMI technology is being used. It is exclusively MHL signalling through the connectors and over the cable. Other proprietary and custom connections are also allowed."). Fortunately we got an easy way to know, Thread starter, does your cable have also the power connection? And do you use it?
I wonder in the Note outputs at 720p?

I see the HDMI output quality very poor
I believe it has to be related to software or cable/monitor hardware, because my stuff gives me full hd resolution. Maybe compatibility issues, as we are using mhl adapters?

what rom are you use ?
Stock, Kies supplied ki4 CF-rooted. Nothing fancy as u can see. Also my screen is a samsung P2770HD, which might be helping. As I posted a page before, I get low resolution when connecting to DVI trough an adaptor.

I use stock KI3 and you should test on some larger LCD 40-46"
When I finally get my hdmi - dvi - d-sub converter i'll try to use
Some of the projectors in the university, that might give interesting results. Anyone tried to use better lcd density values to compensate for the upscalling?

MHL to HDMI connector

Hi guys
i just bought mhl to hdmi convertor off ebay and it supports 1080p resolution. However when i connect it with my Gnex it only outputs 640x480 resolution ...is there any fix for this??

did you sort this as ive got the same but im using a hdmi to dvi adaptor to try on a monitor, it says 1280 x 720 support on the box...
cheers
I'm experiencing some sort of overscan when using the adapter, but I'm not sure if it is the phone, my av-receiver or the TV.
Oh well. It was dirt cheap on dealextreme.com. Not like I lost a lot of money
I haven't got one yet but have been researching like crazy. What I have found so far is that cheap ones are cheap. They do what yours is doing, the connections need to be wiggled to keep it connected etc. Spring for a good quality one if you're actually going to be using it. The folks at MHL have a good one I think, just haven't been able to find it.
No 1080p when using DVI
What a pity! Back in time, when we had ICS there we at least got the possibility to use 1280x720 (as far as I remember) when using a monitor via mhl->hdmi->dvi chain, now we are only getting 640x480, Even when watching movies.
You will only get full HD whenn you connect directly usb-.hdmi->TV
So no desktop mode any more.

I don't know how helpful this is, but Samsung actually makes an HDMI media dock for the GNex that works really well. I'm not sure how much it costs, however, as mine came with my phone.
The only issue I've had with it is that I have to take the case off my phone to use it.
The real good question...
The real question here is: "Can the Galaxy Nexus output 1080p playback, given his native resolution IS NOT 1080p?"
I mean, I know that OSs can adapt second displays and all that, Linux does that, but can Android do that? Treat the HDMI output as a second and independent display? I hope it can. I have a MHL=>HDMI cable (that also needs the power adapter to be plugged in) and I can only get 720p out of it, and the GNex can actually play 1080p movies, so... That would be awesome to play 1080p movies on my TV screen.

Wireless HDMI dongle

Hi does anyone know of a wireless HDMI dongle that works with the GPad for home use? I have a slightly odd setup so will need to do the sound via the headphone socket (and don't want audio delay). In theory HDMI 1.3 should work it out. Does anyone know of a dongle that is worth trying? There seems precious little information out there...

Not wireless, but I bought a cheapo slimport off of eBay and it works just fine... Lots of Miracast options there too, but I can't make a recommendation.

Thanks, which slimport did you get? That would certainly be the safer option for my purposes (and cheaper!). There seem to be some costing £7 and some costing £30. I have no idea if it is a passive device, in which case they should all be the same, or if there is actually some electronics in the slimport in which case perhaps best to get a more expensive one.
The miracast options on ebay all have very mixed reviews...
I got one of these:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/6FT-Slimport...DA_Cables_Adapters&hash=item338b30046e&_uhb=1
I specifically got that one because I'd rather have my charging plugin at the BACK of the TV instead of tangled up in the front. Most Slimport adapters have the USB end and the charging end within inches of each other.
I find it works just fine, and the G-Pad will also let you do other stuff while the video is mirrored on the screen (yet another thing the iPad! doesn't do!). The only thing that doesn't work well is charging while plugged into the TV - as it's designed for phone use, it's only a trickle / 500mA charge (if that), which will keep the G-Pad going but won't charge appreciably (or at all) while you're outputting to the TV. Better just to use it only for the TV and keep your regular charger for direct use.

Happy to go with either miracast or chromcast so long as it does what it is supposed to do, the video quality is good (eg for watching netflix on my 1080p projector) and i can use the headphone socket on the LG Gpad (not the amp as it doesnt have hdmi). But I suspect miracast is better for netflix?

Thanks. They seem to get much better reviews on amazon, but at £50 they also seem to cost double. I guess one has to pay up for this! Is there much of a lag? Not worried about gaming, but more about lipsync with the headphone output on the LG against the video...
I brought mine of ebay for £40. It does have some lag but not too much lag and so it good for internet and look at images. Games also work but u might notice some lag 1/10 Times.

Well in the end I "played safe" and got a CAMAC SlimPort (rathern than miracast). I plugged it into my 1080p projector but nothing comes out. Do I have to set anything on the LG? It is running LG's Kitkat. I note that if I try to set the Miracast toggle, then it wont allow it saying there is an external monitor connected.

For anyone that is interested, I finally got this going. Had to use a different HDMI cable. Video quality on netflix is pretty good, although it is a bit jerky. Guess I will have to watch a whole film to really see how it goes. The sound out of the headphone socket is definitely delayed and there is an easily noticeable lipsync problem with it, but I would say it is tolerable...
It's not cheap but from what I have read the Amazon Fire TV and Allcast could have screen monitoring with sound remaining with the device casting the screen. I haven't been able to locate where I read this though.
Netflix works very well using the ~$50 Belking HDMI 2.0 Miracast Dongle. Virtually flawless playback.

[Q] Slimport to TV, flickers on and off..

I have a magnavox smart tv and i had bought official slimport from amazon for $29.99, it worked fine on LG brand tv when my boyfriend with no problems but on Magnavox SmartTV it just flickers on and off for couple mins then it says change source resolution.. Is there anyway to fix it? I have a LG GPad 8.3 it works fine no problems but with LG G3? I had it on new HMDI as well.. Much help is appreciated...

SlimPort Issues

Has anyone tried to connect their G4 with Slimport? I contacted LG customer service to see if they endorse a specific brand and they sent me a google search for "SlimPort" (which was very helpful /S). I purchased this one from amazon and I can not get a clear picture for more than a few seconds, even though it shows support for the G4. If you go to the official Slimport site it leads you to this amazon link for the SP1004 which is "Currently unavailable".
I am trying to connect my G4 to my AppRadio2 car stereo. I was able to connect my Note3 just fine using MHL but finding the right MHL adapter was a pain as well.

You're not alone! I spent the weeks trying to get SlimPort to work on my G4. Bought three different dongles from amazon. These are all made in China but the first two were the cheap and nasty types. You will know the type. They are all basically the same inside and they usually rattle. One wouldn't charge the phone (Slimport works without a charger), and the picture flickered. The other charged OK but the sound was intermittent. Bite the bullet, as I had to, and buy the brand Slimport. It costs three times as much, also Chinese, but the quality is apparent. Two points to note:
Picture and sound are now perfect on different HD TV but flicker on HD monitor. The monitor is fine with Samsung S4 and HTC M8, different mhl dongles.
I therefore must assume that the standard G4, in standard setup, can only drive a TV.
If anyone knows different please drop me a line.
Ridiculous but I'm considering buying a 24 inch TV to use as monitor on my desk!

Where did you get your SlimPort?
Funny timing with the start of this thread. I stayed in a Hotel last night and was using my CableMatters Slimport adapter on my Nexus 7 (2013), had some issues with the wifi so I hooked up my G4 to see if it would work. The G4 worked beautifully with Slimport for Video, accept that audio didn't get redirected to the HDMI cable, only video.

Or you can pay through the nose and pay the inflated price for the Official Slimport to HDMI adapter.
Then you'll get solid HD sound and video, although only on TV, as I found out.
Not on an HD monitor.

Thank you Kevin for telling us about ScreenBeam Mini2.
Does that require a router and a telephone line? If so then Slimport which doesn't need a router (or external power) is the only option.
With good 4G coverage here I gave up the land line a few years ago. The LG G4 now acts as the router (ditto HTC M8 & Samsung S4 before it) providing web access to smart TVs and Android tablet.
Without a router, the phone can't be projected to a TV using ChromeCast dongle (connected to the same TV), rendering my ChromeCast useless.
Update for readers here, after some initial bedding-in the original branded Slimport dongle has been working flawlessly.
It can drive a 65" TV or a 24" HD desk monitor. Avoid cheap copies, buy the original and you won't regret it.
I have the Kanex Slimport adaptor and it works flawlessly. Sound and images are perfect and the response time is nice and quick too.
I bought it from Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kanex-Slimport-to-HDMI-Adapter-White/dp/B00E0EER2E
It isn't a cheap one, but it does work. Never had any problems with it. Used it with my Nexus 7 2013 and with the G4.
The only thing I do have a problem with is whether it works with 4K or not. I can't get it to work, but I guess that isn't a major issue for most atm.

Connect LG G4 to TV/display with new SlimPort NANO.CONSOLE
Greetings from SlimPort Support. The way to connect the LG G4 to a TV or display is with a SlimPort HDMI adapter or dock. There is a new product called the SlimPort NANO.CONSOLE that just launched on Indiegogo – it lets you connect your LG G4 to the big screen (at up to 4K Ultra HD 2160p, because the LG G4 supports 4K video-out), simultaneously charge your LG G4, and remotely control your LG G4 with the included Bluetooth Smart touchpad remote. It’s really useful and plug-and-play easy to set up and use. Please check it out on Indiegogo by searching on "NANO.CONSOLE".
Thank you!
