External SD Card - Moto Z2 Force Questions & Answers

Hello! I have a TMO stock unrooted phone and purchased a micro sd 64G. I have done some digging but am coming up with nothing. Are we not able to format as internal OR move apps to SD?? The official online help manual for phone clearly shows that I should be able to format as internal but I do not have that option. I have also ticked the option in dev options to force allow apps to be written to SD but it made no difference. Am I missing something? Any input would be appreciated
**nevermind looks like it is basically unsupported now, don't know why they left the option in dev opts tho**

I think that Android Oreo is the answer. In Oreo on default app to SD is imposible. Probably you read manual for Z2 with Android N..In N this was posible.

Lineage os no option to move apps to SD card

Hi all
I successfully updated to the latest nightly build 8/3/17 how ever I have no ability to move app data to my SD card. My sd card is seen under storage and I have files on it.
I also have twrp 3.0.2.0 but get a kernel is not seandroid enforcing error and can't charge whilst off. I have no loop issue the unit work's OK otherwise.
The lineage is rooted, I would welcome any advice.

Sorry all the model is a SM-P605 model.

Interesting if you boot into trwp can that see your sd card? So under storage the sd card isn't visible at all? Have you tried formatting it?

Yes, I can see it fine under TWRP. I thought maybe it couldn't recognize exFAT, so I formatted it to EXT4. But it's still not showing up at all.

That is weird, do you have another android peripheral that you could prospectively format the card in and try? Alternatively you could wipe and reinstall. I blew away the android internal storage and installed from my SD, just about everything works except the sd storage option. That's an issue storage and app wise so I may go back to marshmallow lineageos if I can't sort it.
Failing that back to stock lollipop should that fail.

I don't have another android device, but I do have a linux machine, (actually, I only run Linux in my home), and I can read and write the card no problem in my desktop machine. I haven't tried it on my HTPC/Plex server yet, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. On stock Lollipop, I can see the card, but it's read only. Oh, I should have been clearer. I can see the card on the tablet, but it doesn't display anything. It says "contents not found", and I can't enable writing to it for Root Explorer.

That is weird you got me stumped, other than a rebuild I got nothing. Try the card in a mate's phone if possible better than wiping the unit first.
If that doesn't work I got nothing. Truth be said I'm no expert, I try my best.
Hi all
I updated the Lineageos ROM the AOSP I had no hardware issues or software issues on the OS. However please note that if you use this ROM for some reason you will lose the TWRP Recovery.
I installed the AOSP ROM 7.1.1 first, didn't reboot and then installed the Gapps file, upon reboot it stayed on the splashed screen, so I then booted into the standard recovery and wiped/factory reset the unit, all good since and it is running smoothly, just wanted you to let you know that the Lineage ROM isn't the only option.
I also had the options for the SD card and UI System tweak was also there, good luck. If anyone wants assistance I am happy to assist.

Hey mate I found an alternate fix and everything works, look at AOSP rom and let me know if you have any questions.

I have also a problem with the SD card. I have the newest build and the SD card is seen in the settings and also in file manager can read/write, but other apps somehow don't see it, I cannot set the camera to save photo to external storage, also in Google play music I cannot choose to store music to external card, the options are not there. On my Galaxy S5 also with Lineage it works perfectly. Secondly, in the settings I can only format the SD card as portable, not as internal, but that would not bother me if the apps would see the card and I could use it as storage.
Solution for sd card write issue?
Did you ever find a solution? I have the same devices and exactly the same problems.

Have the same problem on my SM-P605 - have had problem since at least the 20170713 nightly build when I started using LineageOS (am currently running 20170830 nightly).
The SD card appears under settings - I can format and eject the SD card, it appears under /mnt/media_rw/76AC-17ED, but
doesn't appear as a SD card in Amaze file manager
doesn't appear as a SD card in ESExplorer (only Internal Storage appears on the home page)
I cannot set the camera location to save photos on it
doesn't appear under /storage (i.e. /storage/76AC-17ED)
It's as if the storage is mounted, but isn't flagged as being a SD card.

I think I found a solution your problem. Well, it worked for me.
Firstly I backed up my SDCARD
Then went to Settings, Storage Settings tabbed on SD card and tab on options [three dotted things].
Formatted my sd card as internal, when I went back to my applications there was an option to move them to external.
[WARNING]One problem is that if you format it as internal it will not show as different storage systems on your pc WILL SHOW AS SHARED STORAGE!!!!
******** I Had So Many Issues I Would Not Recommend It *********
Hope that helps you

Thanks for the suggestion - but didn't work.
When I click the three-dotted-things only option I see is (under Storage settings) is "Format". I format the card - but still cannot move apps to it or set as camera location.

Hi.
I just got it running on Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition (LTE).
This guide worked for me: modaco.com / news / android / heres-how-to-configure-adoptable-storage-on-your-s7-s7-edge-r1632
Guide also referenced in this German HowTo: androidpit.de / micro-sd-als-internen-speicher-formatieren
I did the 50:50 format on my 200GB SD card.
Please remove the blanks in the links. Had to put them in because forum software did not allow me to include links.

Android 8.1 can't move App to SD

I can't move app to my SD, only External storage format. Someone have the same trouble?
I mailed Nokia customer support about this issue and eventually got the following reply:
Greetings from Nokia Mobile Care ! We are sorry for the inconvenience that you are facing!
Please kindly keep in mind that the Nokia 6.1 device, as well as all other Android 1 devices, do not have the option for Internal storage formatting of an SD card. Additionally, there is no option for forced formatting of an SD card as such.
We hope this information managed to answer your inquiry. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us again!
Still waiting for an explanation as why the User Manual says that Apps can be moved to the SD card.
I believe in the reviews I read that Nokia chose not to implement "adoptable storage" in the 6.1
This is a trend in some new phones which is not welcome.

That option only force apps that normally can't be installed on SD card to be able to move, but we are not even able to move apps which can be moved.
Sent from my Lenovo TB-8704F using XDA Labs
From the AOSP site: "Caution: On devices running Android 7.0-8.1, file-based encryption can't be used together with adoptable storage. On devices using FBE, new storage media (such as an SD card) must be used as traditional storage. Devices running Android 9 and higher can use adoptable storage and FBE." Fingers crossed that when 9 rolls out for the Nokia phones in the Android One program, that adoptable stroage becomes an option. (again, the ability to use both fbe and adoptable stroage only affects phones in the Android One program, why? I don't know)
Adoptable Storage now available, but corrupts files!

The Pie update is finally here (Build 00WW_3_260_SP01) and it is now possible to format an SD Card as "Phone Storage" (aka "Adoptable Storage") but doing so WILL CORRUPT YOUR FILES!
Here is how to do it:
Format the SD Card using something the device won't recognize (NTFS, EXT4, etc.)
Turn off phone
Insert SD Card
Turn on phone
Tap the notification about Unsupported SD Card which brings up the storage options with a Format this SD Card? dialog popped-up on top of it
Tap CANCEL on the Format this SD Card? dialog to see additional options
Tap Phone storage in the Use for extra phone storage part of the screen
You will see another Format this SD Card? dialog that looks identical to the previous one
This time, tap FORMAT SD CARD
You may get a warning about the SD Card being too slow. Ignore that and proceed.
After the format completes, you may think you have working adopted storage, but you don't. Files written to /sdcard (which now points to the removable SD Card) will randomly be corrupted. One way to see the corruption is to tap the Move content button after the format above completes. If you had a lot of data on your internal SD Card (such as hundreds of pictures), much of it will now be corrupted. You were warned.
Another way to see the corruption is to use the adb utility to push files to /sdcard on the device. When you pull the files back, many will be corrupted. It's quick and easy to see the corruption using images (I push about 570 of them) and then launch Google Photos.
Which is worse, not supporting adoptable storage or supporting it and corrupting our files?

Problems with Storage.

Hi, my name is Julian, I am a newbie and I've got two big problems with the Galaxy J5(I think 2016) with 8GB internal and a 32GB SD Card, Stock Gapps and Lineage Os:
Internal Storage Issue
The Phone constantly says “Not enough Storage”, although there are NO extra Apps installed, except Whatsapp, and he has no personal Data(Images, movies, etc....)
BUT when I look in the Storage option in the Settings, the Calculation is not correct. It says : 3Gb for Android, 1,5GB for Apps and maybe 0,5Gb for Data, but the rest is not showing up.
SD Card to Internal Issue
So because of the 1. Issue, we decided to format the SD Card as an internal Storage. We searched up where this Option is to find and then we tried it. During the process it told us that we would free up about 2Gb of the Internal when moving stuff to the new formatted SD, so we did it, but after all There is no Extra Storage, and we are still not able to install apps from Google Play to the SD Card.(And it also says that 16GB of the SD Card are for the Android System, even if there are only 2 small Files or so).
I would be really thankful if you could try to fix our problems, because we can't go back to Stock because the Backup was broken and the copy from the PC doesn't even show up in TWRP(nor with the Backup function, neither with the File explorer function).

I don't have this device but, since there's no Official LineageOS released and, your not sure which J5 you have, here's the only Unofficial LineageOS 14.1 that's currently active that's specific to the J5 (2015).

Storage is a general problem. Not device specific.
It is no good idea to use stock GApps. A minimal gapps is enough. You can install Google apps from play store.
WhatsApp doesn't use adapted storage AFAIK. Especially videos use much memory. Delete them all.

Use SD card as internal storage

Hello everyone!
So far I know on Android Oreo (6) and later versions there is the possibility to format the SD Card and use it as internal memory. This option can be found in many phones that have SD expansion capabilities and is very useful (if your SD card is fast enough).
Why doesn't Mi 10T Lite have this useful option? Since this option is part of the main Android project starting with Android 6, is there another method to use the SD card as internal storage (like via adb)?
Best regards!
Frankly speaking I do prefer the separation of the memory, because in such way I can easily remove the SD and use the smartphone without pain.
As soon you activate the option, you will need to have the SD card inserted to use the smartphone...
Maybe you can follow this guide:

This method don't work for me. The app doesen't display the left bar options that are written on this guide. Anyway thanks for this suggestion.

[Method] Merging SD Card with Internal Storage

This post documents a method of enabling Adoptable Storage with adb commands on sony phones where previously similar solutions seem hard to find. Please link similar methods if they exist somewhere else, I am curious to read.
Personal success on SO-02K (NTT DoCoMo XZ1c ) fw version 47.2.B.5.38 Android Pie, 128G A2 card.
The method results in a fraction of the microSD Card being recognised by the system to be able to transfer apps to, and another fraction where the sd card remains external storage.
The Stock Camera will only be able to save to the mentioned external storage partition after this process, and it will fail to save to internal storage.
Some apps may not work when transferred to the sd card and have to stay in onboard storage.
Premise
I carried out the process with a freshly flashed phone, with a minimal amount of apps present in the system. I cannot guarantee same success with an almost-full phone, although in principle it should be the same. If anyone has success on a more full system please let me and others know.
ADB Debugging should be turned on in developer options and authorization of PC given in advance; root or bl unlock not necessary.
SD Card will be WIPED in the process. For your data's safety do backup everything on your phone, both internal memory and external memory before proceeding! Don't yell at me if in the end it'll have to be restored.
Process
adb shell
sm list-disks this should return two integers such as 179,0
sm partition disk:179,0 mixed xx where the 179,0 should be your result in step 2 and xx be the amount of space reserved for /sdcard ; wait until command finishes. For the mixed xx see Miscellaneous#2 for explanation. Please also reply if you know the command to revert the changes made in this step, because I'd expect it be useful in the future and I don't know what it is.
Turn on force allow apps on external in bottom of developer settings if haven't done so.
Open camera app, click on OK until warnings go away, then set save directory in SD Card. Test if it saves successfully, if not, see Miscellaneous#1.
Reboot, then try moving some apps to your sd card! Some core function apps are not movable; that is to be expected.
Miscellaneous
If your camera won't allow you to open up settings (keeps saying cannot save), then you have run into a problem I have never seen before. If you can go into camera settings but the SD Card option is greyed out, that means either you have not reserved enough space in mixed xx or the command may have gone wrong. Or the card may not be in perfect condition for Adoptable Storage. You can unplug the sd card to see if the camera works fine after that, but I haven't tried that. If anyone knows the corresponding command to revert the changes made in Process#3, please let everyone know!
The mixed xx part allows a part of the sd card to remain.... an sd card. xx% of the space in your card will be recognised as external(portable) storage by your phone, and is readable by a PC. This portion will be the place where your future photos and videos are saved in, as the camera will fail saving to internal space. Thus you may want to use the fastest card you have and set xx based on your use patterns. The other part, the (100-xx) % of space is recognised by the phone as internal storage that it can put apps in, although some apps (especially some games) will still save assets in the phone's on board storage no matter where you move the main app.
This post is re-written from original post(chinese)
Thanks for sharing this but in my experience it does not work. I followed the guide and It looks like it worked, however now I don't understand how to move the apps away from the internal memory to exploit the new storage space provided by the SD "internal" memory... each time I try to move an app I get a "not enough memory" error message although there are about 64Gb free, no matter what app I try moving. I also noticed that deleting an app from the phone and then re-installing the app in the phone will finally install it in the SD but several apps I tried didn't work any more once re-installed in the SD storage.

Hi and Merry Christmas!
I do get system warnings saying the phone is full while it isn't; it seems that Android freaks out a little trying to gather disk usage info when the SD card is merged with internal space. However I can move most non-system-apps.
Did you move the app with the (Press&Hold App Icon)->App Info ->Storage->Change function? I found I didn't include this part in the original writing and might have been a source of confusion. Assuming it was done in App Info, could you tell me what apps don't work, and perhaps I can try on my phone. I also wonder how much storage did you allocate to each of the two partitions on the SD card.
Another potential source of error is the card itself, in some cases, the card may have bad blocks that Android doesn't correct for and cause read problems, as my SD card now begins to show. Sometimes I wake up to see my home screen devoid of apps, and I have to reinsert and restart the phone multiple times before the SD card gets recognized by the phone again.

it doesn't seem the card, since the remaining 64Gb left for external storage, that is where the camera app is saving photos and videos and some other apps save data, still works fine.
Here it is the screenshot of how Android now sees the storage configuration (android settings > storage) after I performed the procedure described above for configuring adoptable storage (writings are in Italian but I think it should be easy to understand).

mine looks the same. I don't know what to suggest. I'll look around on other forums to see if people have the same problem.
This post is re-written from original post in Chinese which in turn is adapted from a lost post on gfan.com.
It also turns out that googling sm partition would give a lot of information most dated back to android 6.
I've been looking around as well, but was able to find only people reporting failures in enabling odoptable storage on Sony devices. However, one difference between your phone and mine is fw version: mine has 47.2.A.11.228 (no brand) - don't know if this can make any real difference.
By the way, I'm wondering whether it could be possibile to install a rarely-used app in the internal memory, then "park" the app in the SD card's external memory by moving its files, then eventually move it back to internal memory only in the case you need opening that app. If it works, it could be a trick for keeping all the apps you want "freezed" in the phone, by taking the usually unused apps in the external memory, then moving one of them in the internal memory only in the rare circumstance you need using it. Then moving it back to the external memory if you think you won't use it any more for a long period. Obviously one could simply uninstall and reinstall those rarely-used apps on occurrence, but that would take more time, consume data traffic and lose the app existing data, so I think that >IF< this kind of trick could be feasible, I'd go for it.

Striking news in the new year-- my sd doesn't work now. Yesterday I checked everything worked, but now no apps installed on my sd card open. using sm list-volumes shows both internal and portable partitions on the SD are mounted, but the apps still refuse to open.
The card looks like it's corrupted, now the two partitions can't even be recognized with my card reader, I guess I'm screwed.
at my asus max m2 .... working, camera, i can move app to sd card and they still works
butttt the only thing is at settings/storage/ information; it shows numbers that dont are correct and a option "to forget sd card " ?!?!?
well i don't know.....
