So as the title says, need collective experience to make the move, and be preemptive along the way of the possible pitfalls and limitations.
Havent experimented much with my XL 128GB lying circa 2018 when i bought it and it still runs fine. As of now it is :
1. Google model (not any carrier branded unit).
2. Android V 8.0.0
3. Bootloader Unlocked (OEM Unlocking enabled int he Developer Options)
4. Rooted.
5. Custom recovery TWRP 3.2.0.-0 installed.
My primary intended use was to make it my music player with AptX-HD and LDAC enabled via the Developer Options, for my wireless hifi headphones and it has been doing so.
As an semi-audioholic I have Viper4Android and Dolby ATMOS working fine on it, with Sony Walkman App, these were only found to work correctly on 8.0.0 as i did spent a great deal of time to make them work with 8.1.1 back in the day.
So I am looking for the most safest route to upgrade to 10.0.0 with the possibility of knowing if the below would remain applicable.
1. Should I go for OTA update as-is OR Do i need to relock bootloader or Un-root before the OTA update. (Any sequence or specific steps to be followed).
2. Will the OTA update lock the bootloader and will remove the root privileges.
3. Is it possible to unlock the bootloader and re-root the device on v.10.0.0 (any guide link appreciated).
4. Will the OTA overwrite the TWRP recovery, is there any newer/better recovery + kernel available with V.10.0.0 (any guide link appreciated).
5. Will ARISE audio (Viper + Dolby + Sony Music Apps) work on the latest android version.
6. Is all the hassle recommended, if the experience is significantly better on v.10.0.0. Any known issues with the latest android, which I should be aware of.
7. Any alternate way and/or newer/better DSP recommended to work with v.10.0.0 for sound enhancements.
8. Is Magisk framework and module working with v.10.0.0.

1. Download a pixel factory image from Google(latest is Dec 2019) and flashed it using fastboot( u will find guide on xda or YT)
2 Do not relock botloader if you want to root or install custom rom

6. There are some good kernel available for android 10 for pixel like Elemental x 5.6, king kernel v6.1, etc.
7. There is no sound enhancement mod for android 10, viper may work
8. U can't do some system modification like changing boot animation, system sound, font by yourself. If u want customization u can install custom rom though

1 Yes pixel factory image will overwrite custom recovery
2. You can install a custom recovery as well as custom rom after 10
3. You don't need custom recovery permanently installed to root your phone. ( Temporary boot into twrp using fastboot and twrp.img and install magisk)

Actually I never permanently install TWRP. If the latest TWRP not works for you try using earlier version and see if that works.

TWRP is Optional. It's written over there in the OP of each Rom
I always did USB debugging option enabled in developer option and give my PC Authorization. So if something goes wrong I can always flash a factory image. In Android 10 I can't make a nandroid backup of the stock rom before flashing any custom rom. so there no point to install TWRP permanently because if something goes wrong u can't restore a backup. If I want in flash any zip in TWRP I always temporary boot into it using fastboot and flash.
TWRP will be permanently needed when you want to install ota updates for the ROM.

Hello, i'm coming from Nexus 4, a great phone, so i decided to upgrade to this phone, the Xiaomi 10T Lite, is enought for my purpose.
I want to install a custom rom so i can have full control of apps and what to install/upgrade, but i find the procedure very different from my old N4.
I want to ask if the procedure below is correct to avoid brick my phone since it will arrive at the end of this week.
- First, i need to install the recovery, i always use TWRP, i connect the 10T Lite to my pc using the usb cable, then i press volume down + power to enter the fastboot, once there i back on pc, install google usb drivers from official site to recognize the phone under device manager, then i download TWRP for Mi 10T Lite, then go to adb folder directory (i'm using a protable version) and i flash the recovery with the standard procedure via cmd:
fastboot flash recovery -twrp_x.x.x.x-.img
This is correct?
- Second i need to unroot the phone, i download Magisk 23.0 from the official site:

Thank you for your kind reply, so i need to download this MI App (miflash_unlock-en-5.5.224.24.zip) and follow the procedure to unlock the phone, and then wait a week or so, then i can proceed to install twrp, rom, magisk, aka everything else.
Dunno why i have to wait a week, a bit odd, anyway, thank you mate, you were a big help.

That's some MIUI policy must wait a week to be able to unlock bootloader. Also when you unlocked it , phone will delete all your data, so save you pictures and everything to pc.
The best thing is to learn ADB command for flashing TWR or OrangeFox.
When you connect your phone in fastboot mode, type :
Fastboot devices - to see if your device is connected properly then
Fastboot flash recovery (name of recovery ,the best is to rename it to twrp.img) press enter - fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
Fastboot boot twrp.img
Then will phone reboot into TWRP.
Prepore on your sd card Rom that you want to flash , magsik ..
First flash ROM, boot it, set all up , then back to recovery and flash magisk.
Did you choose what ROM will you flash?

Thanks for the tips, the command line is the same as Nexus 4 so no problem, i use always cmd commands over precompiled third party kits, i have better control and i know what i'm doing.
For the rom i had Slimrom on my nexus 4, very minimal with basic apps, no playstore or other bloatware, i installed after flashing cutomized gaps based on what i need, prefer performance over quality, what's matter is the full app control and what the OS load, i hate bloatware and useless stuff that i never use, this is why i prefer custom roms instead of the pre-installed os+apps, and lastly is also mandatory the basic dark theme because i hate the white background.
From the roms released here this seems to work good for me:

Xiaomi Poco F3? Surely the hardware is good, 870G, but is also more expensive (around 300 eur).
Before this one was looking for the Realme 8 Pro, is a 8+128 (do not care about 5G, 4G is more than enought), is this model good? From the reviews, this phone is very balanced.
In the end point to Xiaomi 10T Lite just because i found it at a 220 eur.

You think i need to wait the price go down? 300 eur is no joke indeed, but for my purpose is better than the 10T Lite?
I mean, i don't care about playing games or download apps from playstore, i used always APK offline apps, for everything else i use the phone just for basic operations, like callings, e-mail, sms, mms, internet (telegram, rumble,etc...), streaming videos, camera to record videos and photos, nothing more, so a goodly hardware is wasted.
Guess a 750G 6+128Gb is more then enought.
My actual Nexus 4 (2+12Gb) still good but it do not support ethernet connection, storage is limited, the battery is very crap and the camera for photos and video is bad too. Time to upgrade after almost a decade.
ps: Choose the 10T Lite over the 11 Lite because 11 Lite have more weak hardware (732G), is more expensive and i can't unlock the bootloader yet.
I use Sakura with Taleswaves Kerenel not rooted , I loved this rom, and just hope that they will work on it , not stop after one or two updates.
I try all roms from here , but Sakura have nice UI ..

Yes, I just download new version of kernel , put one as card , go to Ofox, I use it instead of twrp and flash. It is on zip file. Also and ROMs it is in zip file. Don't unpack nothing, that's how you download them that's also flash.
I change my ROM for baloong24. Clean AOSP, very fast , very smooth.. amazing. This is the fastest ROM of all..

Sorry to bother, read on Sakura faqs:
FLASHING PROJECT SAKURAAfter you have downloaded all the needed files, you can proceed with the flashing process. Boot your device into recovery mode and go to advanced wipe after that wipe dalvik, cache, system, vendor and data.
Once you have wiped, flash the required firmware/ vendor zips and the flashable ROM zip. Then reboot to system and enjoy a clean Android experience.
Note: ProjectSakura provides three types of builds GAPPS, VANILLA and MICROG. You may or maynot need to flash a separate GAPPS package depending on the type of the build; maintainer is releasing.

Following your guide above, once unlock the bootloader and installed twrp, and wipe dalvik, cache, vendor and data, i'm a bit lost about installing firmware and vendor zips, you do not mention above about these modules, are these necessary before installing the Sakura Rom?

What you guys recommend better option I'm torn between oxy or lineage ROM with magisk for one plus 9 pro. Lmk thoughts Ty.
I used lineage for awhile and can say that battery life will be better, device will perform well, and background apps are more reliable, but I just prefer other ROMs over lineage, it's too basic in terms of customization and OOS is better in some ways. You'll give up the OnePlus camera app and it's optimizations and post-processing. If you're okay using gcam instead of OnePlus cam, then lineage is ok, but I'd recommend crDroid over it most definitely. Its equally stable but felt snappier and more complete feature set in my use. Plus the maintainer updates frequently and does a good job.

crDroid is the best I've used in terms of reliability, though I've been hearing EvolutionX is just as stable and on similar update schedule, and has even better customization, but I can't give full recommendation as I've only used on an older phone. But definitely had better experience with custom ROMs than OOS, so if you can unlock the bootloader, I'd go for it. You'll want TWRP recovery, but don't technically need it. You'll also want to have the newest OOS installed to avoid vendor driver issues (I haven't heard of a real problem except for T-Mobile model needing the vendor modem reflashed every time you update a custom ROM, better safe than sorry though)
Best way to flash would be to download TWRP (found in the development tab here on XDA) and get phone booted into bootloader. Then run
fastboot boot /location/of/twrp.img
Factory reset inside twrp
Then enter adb sideload mode and run
adb sideload /location/of/rom.zip
It WILL get stuck at 47% but will complete successfully if you wait 2-3 min. once finished, I'd repeat the exact same process once more as that will write your other boot slot to assure they're the same and prevent issues (lineage has a script for it, but doing the install process twice works just fine for me). From there, if you want TWRP installed permanently, in the advanced tab, you'll find "install current TWRP" and do that, reboot back into recovery to flash the magisk.apk as a zip file, and it will modify the boot to be running magisk.
You will find other ways of installing if you look at guides and such but what I've outlined works for every ROM and TWRP version I've used on my OP9p. You might see to flash the zip directly in TWRP instead of adb sideload, but some ROMs don't install that way, while adb sideload pretty much always works

It WILL get stuck at 47% but will complete successfully if you wait 2-3 min. once finished, I'd repeat the exact same process once more as that will write your other boot slot to assure they're the same and prevent issues (lineage has a script for it, but doing the install process twice works just fine for me). From there, if you want TWRP installed permanently, in the advanced tab, you'll find "install current TWRP" and do that, reboot back into recovery to flash the magisk.apk as a zip file, and it will modify the boot to be running magisk.
You will find other ways of installing if you look at guides and such but what I've outlined works for every ROM and TWRP version I've used on my OP9p. You might see to flash the zip directly in TWRP instead of adb sideload, but some ROMs don't install that way, while adb sideload pretty much always works

I return to OOS from Lineage OS last month, after using Lineage for a long time. Just because camera on Lineage just can't fit my needs. I tried Google Camera, but there are some bugs and still OOS camera is the best.

Haven't seen a no touch issue before. Well I'd try another factory reset inside TWRP and flash again, I believe 9 and 9 pro are unified for cr but also make sure you got the right zip. If that doesn't work, OOS 11.2.7 is the newest full zip file you can download from OnePlus, maybe try flashing that, and try installing crDroid without updating to 11.2.8 or 11.2.9. If that doesn't work, might be at a loss.

I have a Redmi Note 8 Global, and I am willing to install Custom ROM's on it.
I have read and watched several info about this subject, but there are some aspects I am not so clear about it.
I've never done it before, so first I need to dissipate some doubts. I'll appreciate your guidance.
My phone has the bootloader unlocked, and I have successful flashed it with MIUI Official fastboot ROMs three times with Mi Flash. First time with 12.0.6.0, months later with 12.5.1.0 and last time with 11.0.12.0 (and at present I'am still on 11.0.12.0).
Here there are my concerns and doubts:
- Decryption: Is it beneficial ? Mandatory ? Reversible ? What do you recommends ?
- Rooting: Is it beneficial ? Mandatory ? Reversible ? What do you recommends ?
- Is difficult to me to determine which Recovery to choose: TWRP, or Orange Fox ?
- Which Custom ROM for starting, based on Smoothness, Battery life, and Full functionalities: Pixel Experience 12, or Arrow OS 12 ?
- Can I install any Custom ROM no matter which one I have installed at the time ? For example: Going from Official MIUI 11.0.12.0 to Custom Pixel Experinece 12 ?
- Which are the real probabilities of soft or hard brick to happen during the process, and how to avoid it ?
- Is case of the worst scenario of soft or hard brick, can that be fixable ?
- Any direction to a concise detailed guide starting from the installation of the Custom Recovery to the Custom ROM flashing ?

6. Soft brick : It's like the phone is trying to boot but failing (somewhat like bootloop. Or sometimes if you shutdown your phone while it is flashing a rom then the software will be corrupted and you will see a message "Your system has been destroyed" this means the phone has been soft bricked and you can fix it just by flashing the MIUI rom using the MiFlash tool.
Hard brick: Your are fu***d up man. Your phone is now a piece of brick. To avoid this please make sure to check whether you are flashing the rom which is built for your phone. Like you have a ginkgo device (Codename for Redmi Note 8) but you flashed the rom built for curtana (Code name for Redmi Note 9) then your phone will be hardbricked and you can never ever use that motherboard
7. Like I said you can always fix a soft bricked phone but never a hard bricked one

Yes. I have my phone encrypted and not rooted and it is working just fine
Every developer of any custom rom gives a detailed guide about how to flash that rom. Follow that guide step by step and your phone will be safe

1. Yes, it's beneficial in case your phone got stolen at least your data is secured, add more with pattern and fingerprints. Always go for enforcing rom and kernel for even more secure.
2. Depends: if you mostly work with secure apps such banking, no it's not. However some custom roms don't pass CTS, you'll have to root to gain it (it's needed for most banking apps)
3. Orange fox is preferable, though others like PBR, or official twrp is also good. It's just matter of preferences. Always get the clean one with source .
4. Official Lineageos is always the best path to taste open source android, since it's totally backed by open source community: no ads ridden links, clean source, guaranteed weekly build, etc.
5. Yes you can. Clean data is must (and format if you're encrypted) every time you switch between roms and between version (11 to 12, vice versa) or the rom's maintainer told you to do so.
6. Minimal. Just make backup your persist and efs partition using your recovery and you're good to go, but it very rarely happens.
7. Soft brick: forget to wipe/format data when flashing other roms, flashed bad kernel, etc. Hard brick mostly because doing some stupid stuff (flash wrong rom device with their firmware) or bad things happen unexpected (battery off during flash, etc)
8. Many from wiki pages on lineageos to youtube videos. In short: unlocked bootloader, flash recovery, backup, backup, backup, flash roms, format data
9. Yes, unless you did stupid stuff and made a hard brick, then it's EDL only

At the end, I know the path to take is custom ROM if I want to keep my RN8 the most updated possible.
I really didn't like the Officials MIUI 12 and MIUI 12.5 ROMs (even after fastboot them). Not for having a bad interface but for bad optimization in general. That's my humble opinion and experience with them. I ended up with MIUI 11 / Android 9... XD

- Regarding the flashing of Orange Fox Recovery. In some videos I saw that the person doing the guide flashed the recovery in Windows with ADB commands and that's it. But in others guides I see the person flashing the recovery in Windows with ADB commands, then restart the phone and enter orange fox and flashed orange fox again within the proper Orange Fox. Which is the right way to do it?
- Regarding flashing ROMs: In other guides the person says that you have to Wipe/Clear Data before and after the ROM flashing. Others says is only before, and other says is only after. Which is the right way?
- Last but not least: I saw two Pixels Customs ROM: "PixelExperience", and "PixelOS". Which one is the most convenience?

1. You have to flash firmware because the firmware contains the files of your wireless network. If you don't flash this your wireless network will not work
2. Let me make this clear. Many custom roms have a tendency to replace the custom recovery you flashed with the custom roms own recovery. If you just flash the custom recovery using ADB then the custom rom will replace the custom recovery with its own one. Like if you flash the orange fox and then flash pixel experience without flashing the orange fox again then pixel experience will wipe orange fox and then flash the PE recovery.
But if you install orange fox recovery through ADB and then enter orange fox and flash orangefox again you are just permanently turning off the option that the custom rom will change your custom recovery and put there custom recovery
3. As you are using a Xiaomi phone you have to wipe Dalvik, System, Vendor, Cache, Data before flashing the rom. Then after flashing the rom you have to format data / clear the data partition otherwise the phone will stuck in bootloop
4. Pixel OS and Pixel Experience are both somewhat alike. They try to bring the fluid performance and look of Pixel phones in a non pixel device. But many people prefer the Pixel Expereince rom. But trust me. Pixel OS is also good

Pardon me, but about the Firmware flashing is still kind of unclear for me, cause I didn't see this mentioned on many guides I've seen, only in that one I posted, and triggers my doubt.
About this:
- Do I always have to flash the firmware before the custom or original ROM?
- In which scenario is this necessary?
- If it is. Which version of firmware I need for every custom ROM I'll try? I mean, for example, LineageOS is Andorid 10, so do Firmware of MIUI 12 is needed?, Or if ArrowOS so do Firmware of MIUi 12.5 is needed? Etc etc.

There is no such thing with custom roms
Only Official miui roms (and some few that come with "Recovery" file inside the zip) does that
so check the zip first ...
1st time you want to flash the recovery = flash "vbmeta" then Ofox and select :
"aggresive stock recovery deactivation" in Ofox settings

Now it is clear that the FW has to be the same Android version as the ROM:
1- But the latest MIUI for the RN8 is based on A11, so what FW do you use for the A12 ROMs? The FW of MIUI 12.5.1.0?
2- Do you have to flash the FW every time you install a new ROM, or only if you change the version of Android?
3- This matter of flashing the FW do I have to do it in a specific way, or is it handled by Orange Fox as the ROM?

Yes. I have to say I'm taking really serious regarding all about this process. Believe me, I have to minimized as much that is possible the risks on breaking my phone. It is REALLY expensive buying or fixing it where I life. I need to double check every important aspect, and try to understand the more I can about this. I don't like too much learning things mechanically, if I can learn the logic behind.

Well, yes, you are right. I asked about the FW flashing process various times.
But, see, I've been investigating to changing the ROM of my phone for various days, and for that I watched some videos tutorials and guides in sites.
When I thought I was almost ready to start, I found a video where a person was flashing a Custom ROM and first flashed a Firmware and then the ROM (I mentioned this before). And in my case that video was the 1st time where I was hearding the term "firmware" in a Custom ROM flashing guide. Sawing that, I was like: Whaaaat? Then because of it I had to postergate the flashing of my phone and keep digging, cause I knew that the "firmware" is really important in every electronic equipment. Messing with it is dangerous.
I admit again the constants askings about FW, ...sorry about that. What I have just explained here were the true cause. I just needed to be more sure.
So I ended up here at XDA searching for learning and to clear doubts.

@lhn53 : if you're that unsure, my advice would be to proceed cautiously and step-by-step, ensuring you can back out any major ****-up.
- Get MiFlash and the appropriate recovery stock ROM (in the worst case scenario, it will allow you to revert back to stock);
- Set up a custom recovery, ensure that it sticks, then familiarize yourself with it (you have multiple choices: TWRP, OrangeFox and PBRP);
- Choose the custom ROM you want to flash and read all related resources at least twice; then,
- Try to follow the procedure explained by the developer to the point, so if anything goes awry you can point to where it diverged;
- That applies to changing or updating firmware, just go with what the dev says on first instance;
- Finally, trust loopypalm, he knows what he's talking about and has been here longer than most.

It's just that when you see searching the WEB so many criteria and some differ from each other, doubts grow in a newbie like me. As I mentioned before there are many tutorials in the web where they do not mention the firmware as part of the steps and less about vbmeta.
For me It seemed quite simple at first but now I see it has more important steps to take into account.

1st time you want to flash the recovery = flash "vbmeta" then Ofox and select :
"aggresive stock recovery deactivation" in Ofox settings...)
Regarding vbmeta I have some questions (please be patient):
I've search about it, and I see It's like the Secure Boot of Windows.
I have seen various criteria: I saw people saying it is not needed in all RN8, and some says it does, for avoiding bootloop, etc. IMHO I guess that it is better to do it. Right? (...my intention is only of clarifying).
- The vbmeta.img file that is needed is the one inside Xiaomi's fastboot stock ROM compressed file. Is it?
- Is it necessary to flash vbmeta on every installation of a new ROM, or only when it is based on a different Android version?
- In case I want to return to Stock MIUI, this vbmeta step will not be necessary. Ins't? As I have understood, this is done simply with MiFlash..., Or first is it convenient to wipe some data or partitions with Custom Recovery? How would be exactly?
Please remember, I am trying to understand as much as I can about the whole process. In cases like these I like to learn by logic whenever is possible. Thanks a LOT once again.

So can I go into recovery and just sideload the rom then format and reboot (to replace my current rom)

If you get problems flash with fastboot the 3 files and reboot recovery
I used AOSPA boot.img, it worked correctly, but I already say that Rice 10.2 has a crash problem in SystemUI, it happens every half hour on average, it's not just in 11 NE, in my F3 it's happening the same.

but does the adb cmd method to flash fastboot stock miui rom work on this phone without errors?
I already use they Xiaomi adb and fastboot tools to flash original miui stock roms, You can try it with that, If it doesn't work for you that way, you can do it using fastboot (press the power button and volume down).If you want to install "Ricedroid, you already have the process: use a custom recovery, it can be PixelOs Recovery or Pixel Experience recovery, both are very complete.

Personally, I do not recommend version 10.2 of RICEDROID, since I found several errors in the launcher, as my colleague said, as well as errors in the display in the case of video games, since it only detects a finger.

I ended up leaving Rice 10 on my two devices, performance was very bad, heating up, high consumption, and an annoying bug of crashing QS making the screen turn off, I ended up going back to MIUI since I didn't find any stable custom rom without high consumption
From my point of view it seems great that you return to miui, although you may also want to try PixelOs, LineageOs or CherishOs, which in my opinion are custom roms that are not so well known, but they have an amazing quality in all aspects, now I am using PixelOs on my Mi 11 Lite 5g NE (Lisa)
