Flashing kernals. - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

So after exploring the many roms there are for this device. I went back to using stock rom to fix battery life. I flashed Flash Kernal.
Great kernal. but I'd like to ask you guys how do you go back to stock kernal if you wanna just flash it so I can try another kernal like ElementX

You gotta flash stock boot.img from whatever update your on. You'll either have to download it from Google factory images and find which update you have maybe May and then unzip it. You'll find the boot.img in there. You'll either have to fastboot flash it or an easier way before I flash kernels I like to make a TWRP backup with especially the boot partition. It's super easy. Then when I want to revert back after flashing and kernel I can go back into TWRP and reflash my stock boot

Problems with El29 update

Okay so i first started getting the update about a week and a half ago. I was rooted when i first got it so i went and unrooted and charged my battery fully to install it. When i went and tried to install it, it would go about 1/4 of the way in the stock recovery, and just stop and the screen would change and look different ( i cant remember what it looked like) so i let it sit for about an hour and it didnt do anything. So i pulled the battery and just turned the phone on. It put me back into recovery mode and i just rebooted to system. when my phone turned on i went and look at the Baseband and it was and EK02, and it installed all the stock sprint bloatware. Idk what i did wrong. Can someone please help me?
it didn't matter that you were rooted.do you have cwm recovery installed? thats why it failed. you need a stock kernel with stock recovery. or since we have had this update for a while you could flash a stock rooted el29 rom. them flash a el29 modem.
Yes i had stock recovery.
I also had a stock rooted kernel, no roms, or themes flashed.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Be2evusAwOM&list=UUbR6jJpva9VIIAHTse4C3hw&index=119&feature=plcp This is the video i used to root my phone
huh? maybe the update glitched? if it comes back try again or just get the stock rooted one from the dev section. then grab the el29 modem.
ehhhh dont mean to sound noobie, but can you give me links to those.
And would i need to flash a custom recovery?
forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Epic_4G_Touch/Modems this on is for modem.
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1429243 for rooted el29. must be flashed through cwm.
chris41g.devphone.org/index.php?dir=EpicTouch%2FStock+Repack%2FEK02%2FCWM5%2F this is for the repack with cwm. make sure to thanks chris.
so you need to odin the kernel first. if you don't know how qbking has a bunch of videos on how to. he's awesome. after you odin the kernel, flash in your recovery the modem. then flash through cwm the rom. the rom comes with a new kernel as well. btw if you want a touch recovery go to dev section and get the hitman kernel from rogue. its awesome.

Flashing kernels

Hey just 2 quick questions in the way of Kernels.
1 what is the best kernel for saving battery available for the galaxy Nexus?
2. How would I go back to the stock kernel after flashing a custom one? (how do I revert back)
Thanks!

I love Francos Kernel, and I think most people on this forum will tell you the same. For now, its the bomb diggity. As for reverting back, you should be making a nandroid backup in Rom Manager before every flash just incase something goes wrong so you dont lose anything. Flashing that nandroid back will give you your old kernel back.
No need for nandroids, if you want to revert to stock kernel, just grab stock from zip, extract boot.img
Reboot phone into boot loader/fastboot, 'fastboot flash boot boot.img', done.

[Q] ICS flashing clarification

I know there are a lot threads about bricking your phone if you flash from recovery while on an ICS build. I know that you can odin back to a GB build and then flash the ICS rom as safe way to flash. My question is this. If I am running on an ICS rom and there is an update and I don't want to wipe the data, can I use mobile odin to flash a GB kernel and boot straight into recovery and then flash the ICS rom? Or will this cause issues having an ICS rom that has been flashed with a GB kernel?

The accepted method is to use the Stock EL26 CWM kernel to flash anything ICS. You can get it from here:
http://chris41g.devphone.org/index.php?dir=EpicTouch/Stock+Repack/EL26/
The reasoning is that the stock CWM recovery is deemed safer than the repacked kernels with CWM (like Rogue).
Even if you find it necessary to go back to Gingerbread, once again odin the stock EL26 CWM kernel (or the full one-click odin back to stock). Then use the EL26 recovery to wipe and flash the Gingerbread rom.
You can flash the GB kernel in mobile Odin and then boot into recovery. Just remember it will only boot into recovery and download modes. Since it still has the ICS ROM the phone won't go past the boot stage and turn all the way on. But ya you are still able to access recovery and everything so you can still flash. I actually did this the other day.

[Q] Download CM9 kernel?

Is there anywhere I can download the CM9 kernel or backup the current one? I want to try out different kernels. I like the CM9 kernel, but miss the tweaks like usb fast charge. I would prefer not to have to backup the whole rom as the method in case I have to restore it a week later rather then just re-flash back the kernel. Thanks !

All you have to do is reflash the ROM to get back to the stock kernel, doesn't hurt since it's a no wipe flash.
You could also take the boot.img from the CM9 zip and flash that via fastboot.
Sweet. Thanks!

Can't boot on CM10

I have some questions and need help fast if possible. I'm currently on CM10 beta 2 and only have a nandroid backup from being stock rooted. I know you can't simply restore a backup from jelly bean to ICS. I was playing with ROM Toolbox, and was installing some custom transitions. I did a backup of the stock transitions, but the zip backup file won't flash in recovery. Anyway I can't boot up and only get the Galaxy S II boot screen. I can however get into download and CM CWM based recovery. I've done quite a few searches, with no real answers for this issue. Any help will be greatly apreciated because I don't have my phone until I figure out exactly what to do. Do I have to download a stock ROM with cusom kernel to computer then transfer over file via usb using Odin and then use CWM to flash the stock ROM? I know not to do a factory wipe unless I'm on el26 or 29. I also know you can odin to them then flash, but all the odin kernels with CWM are from ICS and I can't find a solid method for my specific situation.

Thanks Blues. But I need to flash el29 or six before flashing right? So I'm guessing I need to Odin to one? And I can do that from any ICS or JB right? So I just need the one click for PC Odin, then flash with Odin? Sorry, I just want to be 100% here.

Use the one click.exe full rom file that will flash the full el29 gb rom. Then from there you can flash cwm to flash cm10 or whatever rom you want.
But do I have to go el29 or 26? How do I get there from where I'm at now? Thanks again, and sorry I just want to be 100% here.
Edit: Okay, great. After flashing that I obviously could do my nandroid restore? Just because I lost some pictures or something happened when I flashed to JB because I only had a few pics and none of my SMS or call logs or anything came through.
Ok, just so the thread is not a complete waste, I did flash the stock ROM via PC ODIN. Went back to stock, was able to do a nandroid restore, and went ahead and flashed CWM recovery via Mobile ODIN. Went ahead and wiped factory in CWM recovery and flashed CM10. Thanks again Blues, next time I'll just post in your noob thread. . I'm not a noob but I just never had to PC ODIN when not being able to boot and wasn't sure how safe it was in my specific state.
P.S. Any other users are more than welcome to P.M. me if you have any questions. I probably won't visit here again
