I want to be on a gsi but I can't deal with the navigation bar at the bottom or on the sides... On the 8.0 emui it extends every app and game to 18:9 but on the gsi and rros it keeps some games and apps in 16:9 mode and I hate it even when apps are in full screen and or desktop expanded it will show that bar. any help??

You can disable nav bar on gsi by adding qemu.hw.mainkeys = 1 to buildprop.
You will have to be rooted.
All apps working full screen 18:9
Than install a gesture app I recommend edge gestures from play store. Works perfectly.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ss.edgegestures
It's paid app but there are a bunch of alternatives in play store.

If you mean literally full screen, you can't. We have a weirdo aspect ratio that isn't fully supported.

I doubt it but you can try.
i m also looking for a solution for this... this really shows that Android isnt optimized for an immersive fullscreen experience. which is a bummer with the new 18:9 displays and bezels getting smaller and smaller..
It becomes very apparent when using iphone x - iOS is designed to give a much more immersive feeling - no nav bar and only transparent status bar. Apps by default literally fill the entire screen - where do we ever have this? We only get this in certain situations for media and games, thats it. rest of OS is not really immersive.
i installed "Granular Immersive Mode" app to get rid of status bar in select apps and it already makes a big difference. i would recommend this for everyone.
I also experimented with "Swipe Home Button" to get rid of nav bar and really fullscreen apps, but there is no good way to maintain BACK button and RECENT button.
but that still leaves things like 18:9 video in Chrome which is just not possible. ah well.
Use Samsung's browser. That one offers support for video scaling by stretching or cropping.

thanks for suggestion, but not the version i found in the app store, at least not for the 2 pages i just tried. maybe i missed something..
either way, i rather wanted to make the general point about Android here ...
Yes, you need to activate the Video Assistant (or something similarly called) from its extensions list. Then it should be working fine. I just checked it using the official version of the browser (beta is a bit older).
Can u provide me the extension name
Men this browser is awesome. Solution for all issue. Recommended. It have all you need in super amoled and ratio 21:9
As mention in the title, I have been looking for a way to get apps to take advantage of the entire screen. Most games (Hearthstone, Cosmic Express, etc.) have a black bar at the bottom even when immersive mode is active. I have used apps such as Granular and Nav Bar Hidder to force immersive mode which does work for some apps but not for every app.
Other android phones such as the LG V30 and the Samsung S8/Note 8 have a feature where they force apps to run full screen with no black bar. I know custom ROMs could fix this problem by porting the feature and I have been looking around a ROM that has this feature, with no luck.
Does anyone know of a fix or a ROM that could help?
I think the apps need to be updated to take advantage of the 18:9 screen.
That's how it looks.

I measured it, the navigation bar hight is 168 pixels and the black area hight 202 pixels. So I would say on the unfilled area, the developers are to blame because they have not optimized the apps for 2:1 screens.

Funny thing is that this phone doesnt auto centered the screen when using an app that havent optimised for 2:1 aspect ratio,
Example, game will use left area of the screen, leave a big black unused space on the right.
Sometimes the "stock" thing in pixel make the phone actually dumber,
My S8 do better handling this situation.

I agree samsung's solution is better for this issue, should have been common sense by google to do the same.
Honestly the aspect ratio is the only thing that really pisses me off about the screen. Colors, tint, blah blah blah...I don't care about. The fact that many app developers still haven't gotten off their asses to fix this aggravates me to no end. I'd much rather have the 5.5" screen of the Pixel XL in a supported format then a larger device with a 6" screen that triggers my OCD.
I have a problem with some applications. They don't want to use full screen. For example Spotify. There is a black bar above navigation bar.
Is this problem related to spotify app or something related to operating system?
Do you have similar problem?
I think that maybe the 18:9 aspect ratio or the resolution perhaps isn't supported by all apps yet. I face the same problem with Ingress, but found a workaround to make the black bar smaller: By hiding the status bar for that specific app you have that issue with, here's a link: (No root needed)

same problem for me with spotify
any solution?

I wrote a post on spotify community page, but no real answers so far. So, we have to be patient.
More apps have this problem..I asked developer of one of them and they said that in the future they plan to support 18:9 apps lol its 2018 already they should have it..
color os.5 has feature to scale any app to 19:9
so i hope someone can port the feature into aosp/androidOne
any solution?
Solution
If you're looking fullscreen + gestures (like in MIUI) you're looking for this app - Fluid Navigation Gestures (search google play store)
It works BETTER than original, allows for customization and forces all "2D" apps to render full screen. Not games though
You'll need adb as well to make that program work
The Essential PH1 had this function where you can control the notch per application. Anyone know if Google is planning to do this on the Pixel 3 XL? It's nowhere to be found even in the dev options. Not sure if the November update has anything new (didn't get the update yet).
Not per app but you can "hide" the notch by moving the notification bar down below the notch and that screen area is just black. Pixel doesn't have the option to make the bar black always and keep the icons up there like other phones do.

Nacho Notch does that.
Question about "Hide Cutout"...when you turn this on, does it simply just turn that area black or does it turn off the pixels so it prevents burn in?

Yeah I know about that option. I wanted to see if we can somehow control it per app. That way, we don't lose all the screen real estate when you play certain games.
Is there any method to force apps to use notch area?
Like pubg game before pie update the notch was included in the game after pie there is black area instead
Any solution?
There is Notch Liller ( requires root ):
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2-lite/themes/magisk-module-notch-killer-ignore-t3894060
Or there is Natcho Notch app from Google Play ( does not require root )
I want to use the notch area in specific apps like pubg not to hide it
