I have an issue that I think was caused by the May update. Did not have this issue with the April update. Is it possible to go back to the April or even the March update since I have installed the May update?
The issue in question is that the proximity sensor appears to be stuck on (covered/near/close). Noticed this the same day I installed the May update and that morning (on the April update) it was operating normally.
I have installed the April and March updates and it gets to the white Google screen with the colorful "G" on it. I get a scrolling 1/2' bar below the "G". But it never boots completely. I'm trying to do this without wiping data.
Running stock rooted with ElementalX 1.07.
I've taken the phone back to full stock and even run in safe mode and the issue remains.

In order to go backwards, you have to do a full wipe and clean flash what factory image you want. No way around it I'm afraid
I was seriously afraid that was going to be the answer., but was hoping that maybe someone knew a way around it. This isn't going to be fun. ?

Meh...just backup as much as you can on your pc. Google restore and TiBu make it much less painful.
Yeah, I know. Just hate doing it. Always seem to have other things to do when something like this comes up. Like, you know, never enough time. LOL

This never used to happen but in the last week has.
While using it, whether I'm in GoSMS Pro, or Chrome or even in the homescreen the screen will fade to black then back one to three times. It almost feels like proximity detection but there's absolutely no obstruction nor am I in a call.
Running 4.0.4 stock unrooted, latest update from Rogers.
Has anyone had this? Getting a bit worried!
Screen blacking out randomly
I'm also having this problem. I'm also on Rogers but I'm am rooted. I am however still using the stock rom. It all started happening after I did the latest update. Any help would be appreciated.

YES! Finally I'm not alone.
I was worried this was isolated. This confirms even more my suspicion it's a software not a hardware issue. The other reason why it would be so is because after it flashes off and on, the screen elements also do, which indicates the software is trying to refresh the display. If it were hardware it would likely not fade flash and nothing would change on the screen.
It sounds like the software update caused it as I noticed it started after installing it.
I ended up doing a hard reset yesterday after having had no responses. I am hoping it might help. I hate having to reinitialize so much crap while unrooted though. I was hoping to keep it stock and not worry about saving app data until Jelly Bean official stock is out. Oh well.
I also learned S Memo Samsung account syncing doesn't work. Good thing I made a Kies backup. Sigh...

In the meantime I'm talking with Rogers about this and pointing them to this thread.

I think I've solved it, but this may not be a solution for most people experiencing this (my friend also had this issue). In my case removing the game Modern War solved it.
I remember that after I installed it, the system started doing these flashes. It now has been behaving ok for 4 days since uninstalling it.
I don't think the game itself is the cause, but rather there could be some background task from it (it does occasionally push game event updates as notifications) that doesn't like the 4.0.4 update. In this case I can't quite identify what nor do I know how to diagnose it.
Just thought I'd update people in case they still have this issue. It may be one of your apps, essentially. It sucks and it shouldn't happen, but alas unless we test with a new stock OS update, we won't have much to eliminate it without removing the offending app.
So my first N7 had dead pixels and when I returned it I had to open 3 others in store to find one that was perfect. Or seemingly perfect. Twice now I've woken up to find my N7 off. The first time it happened I thought maybe I turned it off but last night I know I left it on. I did some searching and found that I am not the only one with this issue, but I haven't found any recent threads about it or any known fixes. Now I'm still on 4.3 and really don't want to update to 4.4 but if this bug was addressed I'll update it. Anyone here have this issue, found a fix, or updated and had the issue disappear? I really don't want to exchange it yet again but I will if it's the only way to get one that doesn't do it. Any insight would be appreciated.

Why don't you want to update to 4.4.2? It might solve the problem.
Anyway, the only device I had that had random reboots was my Nokia Lumia 520 which I straight away replaced.
I would advise you to do it aswell incase 4.4.2 doesn't fixe it.

I don't like the way 4.4 looks. I am a big fan of the blue/holo theme of 4.3. I have 4.4 on my N5 and that's enough for me. 4.4 really doesn't bring much to the table (for me anyway) that would compel me to update.
My N7 isn't rebooting, it's turning off. Never had a device that did that before. I'll probably update just to see if it stops it, and plus I have some bad stuttering when watching embedded videos in chrome and from what I've read, 4.4 solves that too. I really don't want to have to exchange it again, and I'm sure the manager at Best Buy doesn't want me to either lol.

I'm going to tomorrow if it does it again tonight. But the tablet is only a few days old and I already did a factory reset before I set it up initially.
Ok it just did it again right in front of my face. It didn't just go black in the middle of use, I picked it up to use it and before I could do anything it powered down, but did so as if I had deliberately done it. Meaning, the Power Off pop up was on the screen and it said "shutting off" the same way it does when you turn it off manually. That would lead me to believe it would be a software bug as opposed to a hardware one... am I correct in that assumption? Or can some hardware defect actually trigger the normal power down sequence?
Just to give a heads up,i woke up this morning and checked my phone as usualy then i see something downloading.
Imthinking woahh i just woke up, i havent downloaded sh*t?
I check it and its a update by verizon, it was already half way and i canceled. I know i had my update settings to not auto update but for some reason it tried updated.
Iv got xposed and root, updates usually mess up the phones with a combination of these 2.
Headsup for everybody else, dont let verizon sneakup on you !
Downloading now, should be done in 10-15 min
Anyone with root install?
FYI it is a security update. 413 mb in total. Screenshot to come soon
Just got this 30 or so mins ago. Haven't installed it yet
I have not rooted my G4 yet. Does anyone know if taking this update will prevent me from Rooting? Also, will I be able to do the update after rooting??

I am rooted and have attempted the update. Upon rebooting, i got a message stating, "System update unsuccessful" , "Sorry, there was a problem updating your LG VS986. No changes were made. Please try again or you can upgrade using the Software Upgrade Assistant from your computer."
I have not looked into logs, but i imagine the message is due to my phone being rooted. I really wanted the update as it is supposed to some of the touchscreen response related issues on the G4.
Well, At least, it didn't brick.
sideone.
Oh that's great news. This phone has been ridiculously slow because of the missed taps (missed the "p" in the word phone twice just then) and swipes registered as taps. Brutal. I'll gladly unroot and update if it makes this a functional phone.
This is my third G4 vs980 and they all have had this issue. Really hoping this fixes it or I'm moving on to the nexus 6p. Way to go LG!
The touchscreen issues seem to be resolved now after the update. Haven't noticed anything else yet..
I'm rooted on 11A and now to figure out how to install 12A and keep root....
Anyone know?

There was a lot of initial placebo effect reported about this after the first update months ago and in fact nothing changed. I have not done the update yet myself as I am waiting 1-2 days to see what others say, but I do hope this is addressed..... for real this time.
Anybody who does install a quick review would be greatly appriciated
I am not rooted and I just took the update. The touch/tap function does seem to be working better. I hope that I will be able to root the phone at a later time after taking this update.
Touch screen issues on the G4 is the only thing that keeps bothering me everyday. If the 12A software update would fix this and I could keep root, this phone would be perfect for me!

i dont believe i ever experienced a touching issue, but at the same time i never really looked into it.
what are they symptoms that their are touch issues?
Im wondering becuase i notice their is a small delay of when i click on things, but never really thought of it as an issue.
how does the touch seem to work better on the update?

The screen seems to be more sensitive to touch. I am not seeing a lag in the touch.
I was seriously just looking around SWAPPA to sell my device because the touchscreen issues were getting ridiculous. If that is fixed and I can root on the new software this phone will be perfect.
Is it possible to downgrade back to 11a if I update and don't find it useful. I'd rather have root if it doesn't fix touchscreen touches
So, I flashed the Sept. Pie update WITH the -w. Some things were being screwy so it just needed to happen. So, got the phone setup and started the restore from Google backup. It's been sitting at the same spot (like barely any color on the left side...) for almost 3 hours now... Has this happened to anyone else? I don't see the option to restore in settings, maybe it's just not showing because it's currently trying to restore, but, I think I need to start it over if possible. Never had this problem during setup, so, I'm not sure it is. It also has never taken 3 hours to complete, let alone hardly do anything.
Let me know if anyone has any know on this!

9. I rebooted the phone and still could not find an option to restore. Even Google'd it. Nothing. Doing a factory reset now. So stupid. Why would there not be an option to restore in settings? Only immediately after a reset? Bah
It appears the second reset and setup/restore is working. Weird. Anyway, glad it's actually going to work! I thought I might be setting it back up completely.

If this were a Samsung phone, I would say absolutely to that. But, nah, I don't think so. Pie just came out, there's probably a few little weird bugs left to fix yet.
Now I can't get my Gear S3 to finish setting up though... I thought the compatibility was fixed. Not sure what to do? God I can't wait for new Wear OS watches (with the new chip). No more Samsung for me ever again.
After updating to 10, a few times a day my phone becomes completely unresponsive. Since the screen is off, I'm not even sure if the phone is powering off. I've flashed the factory image to see if starting clean would fix it, but that didn't work. Anybody else experiencing this?

No, but you may be installing an app that is causing it. Try replicating the issue in safe mode. Ruling that out, if you have done a clean install using the full image (not ota) and allowed it to wipe your data there is not much more to do before contacting Google. A clean install restores your phone to its "out of the box" state. If the problem persists, it is likely hardware related. You can try a factory reset from the stock recovery... that is the first thing they will insist you do before processing an RMA.

I didn't have the issue on Pie and haven't installed any additional apps. It mainly happens after I haven't used the device for a while. It feels like it won't wake up so I have to hold the power button to force a reboot.

Yes.
I was just peaking to a buddy with a 2xl and he is having the same issue since 10.
I have an issue where after about two day of it being on it will start to stutter, and then after a couple hours it reboots itself. It's done it since 10 was released. Never had an issue on 9. Now I proactively reboot it once I notice the stuttering. Kind of sucks since 9 was super stable for me. No new apps, and no settings were changed. Just updated to 10, and it started. Kind of like memory is leaking causing it to stutter/freeze, but the last patch they said they fixed the leak. Guess not.

I just had a random reboot while taking my dog for a walk. Was only listening to SiriusXM. Think I'm going back to Pie until Google gets the kinks ironed out on 10.
https://support.google.com/pixelphone/thread/14074635?hl=en
Booted into safe mode last night and had to force a reboot this morning to get the screen to respond. This is definitely an issue with 10 and not an app. I'm going back to Pie since having my phone turn off every night is unacceptable, especially since my phone is my alarm clock.
I took the OTA before setting up my new P3XL on A10 and don't have any issues. You might try wiping data then restore apps without data.

I flashed the A10 Oct factory image and wiped data. Still have the issue. The only thing that fixes it is going back to Pie.
So this happened to me twice now since being on 10. My screen would go black while using the phone, and then the phone would be unresponsive, so I would need to force a reboot, but after the Google splash screen it goes into recovery, and this message shows "Could not load Android OS. You can try again, or factory reset.". I did "Try again" both times, and it booted fine. Really irks me since I can't afford to do a factory reset since I use a lot of apps that have special info in them (Like Google Auth App that has many devices I need, and resetting I would have to redo every device). I hope Google can fix these issues with the next update.
I think my issue is due to the sensor bug that was introduced in 10. I have disabled the sensors on my phone and it hasn't froze since!! Hopefully Google fixes on the Nov update.
I'm having the issue that after my screen turns off, after a certain amount of time, I cannot get it to turn back on. The phone is still on, but is unresponsive to my input. I have to hard reset.
I have tried reflashing, and tried disabling sensors. I did not have an issue with the 10 September updated, but since updating to the November update, I had the issue non-stop all day.
Platform-Tools fully updated, not using gesture navigation, but the 2-button.
@MeetFace, yes! Same here since the November update. Something isn't right.
I'm still dealing with the black screen issue. Nov update didn't fix it.

Update, I read in a thread somewhere that disabling darkmode fixed it for one person (rando I know).
I created a tasker script that disables darkmode once the screen shuts off, and enables it when it turns back on. So far, no BSOD this morning (4 hrs)
