Unknown popup after a phone call - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

I'm on the May 8.1 security update. I just started getting this a day or two ago and have no idea where it's coming from. The attached screenshot was from an incoming call and doesn't show the phone number or an ad. Outgoing calls show the number and have an ad included. Does anyone know what this is and how I can get rid of it?

No nothing new, just normal Play Store updates to my existing apps. I run the stock Google phone app and am stock rooted with Magisk 16.4 and ElementalX-P2-1.07 kernel, the same as I have been running for months. I also run T-Mobile's version of Lookout Security and it hasn't found anything.
EDIT: I just noticed that it says App Backup & Restore about the popup, which isn't on my home screen. I have turned off its phone permissions and will see if that fixes it.

No Spam Message Blocking? Had it on the Note 4..

I upgraded from a Note 4 to the Verizon Samsung Note 7 today and have been unsuccessful in locating how to send contacts text messages to the spam folder - A feature that I used frequently on my previous phone. Does anyone have any idea where this feature could be? This is different than going into your contacts and blocking their phone calls. If this feature no longer exists, I will likely return the phone for a different one if I cannot find an app to send these texts to without replacing the default messaging app. Any help or ideas on this would be appreciated, thanks!
Verizon has taken that feature away and added their own. They want you to go on my Verizon add block it through there.
Lame huh.
I use an app in the play store called Hiya. An article I read said that White Pages and Hiya merged or WP bought the later and that Samsung was using them. I know it can integrate with messages but I haven't enabled it yet. So far this morning it rejected 5 calls, three were telemarketers or suspected and two were the IRS scam. It flashes for a brief second on the phone then shows "Call Rejected - Suspected Telemarketer", or whatever the reason for rejection. Then it allows you to view comments on the number or add comments of your own. It's pretty cool, although I sometimes miss answering with my latest, "<insert business> Pizza, Would you like to start with our new carry out special?". That or "Judges Chambers, bailiff...", always gets a quick hangup. Lol
Truecaller app is awesome.. I've been using it a long time.

Verizon Messages & can't attach pics to message after root

Hi. BL unlocked and rooted VZ Pixel XL. After root I noticed that I could no longer attach a pic or media to a message using VZ messenger. No matter what I choose I get an error message saying "Message + keeps stopping". Odd thing is that if I select the pic in Google photos and use share, then select VZ messenger I can attach and send the pic. I tried attaching a photo using the stock messenger and have no problems. Anyone else experiencing this?

I have the same issue...can receive mms and group texts just not send them... unlocked and rooted on a Verizon Pixel XL...must be something with root...cuz it worked before that...can anyone else confirm with the OP and myself if they have any mms issues after root on Verizon?
OP did mms work before rooted? I tried Verizon messages but it force closes on me...and Textra and Google messages just hangs for until I get a send failed notification.
I chatted with Verizon they have no clue what is causing it...has to be the root I'm thinking. Never had this issue before on any other device I have had...
Edit: I read your post wrong seems we have different issues . I can attach pics just they never send. Weird how I can receive then just not reply to a group message at all...?
This is a serious question because I'm curious... Why use Verizon messages?

I hate the app visual but in terms of functions, it's the best and most complete. Send/receive msgs from tablets and computer is huge, honestly it's the one thing I don't understand why Android still doesn't natively do.

You need to use Verizon's messaging app. Verizon has an app for computers and tablets as well. I also use it on my iPad Pro. Works great.
If you're like me, who hates the visual of Verizon's app, you can use their app to set up on other devices, once it's all setup you can go back to Google's Stock app and you still get your texts on every device

Awesome tip, thank you! I hate the look of VZW's app and never use it, so this sounds like a good solution.
I concur, I abhor the UI, but find it tolerable with a lot of customization. I use it because it is amazingly feature rich. The ability to filter conversations by media, links etc is huge for me. The Glympse integration and auto emojis, as well as embedded image search for quick gifs are things I use every day. The picture editor is ungainly, but also very functional. Scheduled messages, auto restore for texts, messaging features like live typing notification, etc.
Atheistic wise, I prefer Textra, but I always find myself wandering back to message+ simply for the features. Again, lots of customization required to be tolerable. Thankfully it allows for that.

No notifications from Android messages

I have the T-Mobile variant and cannot get Android messages to work. Notifications don't show in the status bar and no sound. Texts come through, but I have no idea when they do. Is anyone else with the T-Mobile version having this issue. It's driving me crazy that I can't figure it out, and I've tried everything I know how to do to get it to work.

I can't figure it out so I gave up and I'm doing the same. Stock app it is until maybe someone figures it out
I'm having the same issue. Issue started happening for me yesterday. Not sure what's causing it.
From my experience, this is happening due to T-Mobile's RCS/Advanced Messaging. I too installed Android Messages, and found that when on Wi-Fi I do not receive notifications alerts from incoming messages, when on mobile data it's fine. Sadly disabling the stock messaging app didn't solve the issue, and you can't disable RCS services. Also, this only occurs when messaging other T-Mobile Android devices equipped with RCS support. So I get T-Mobile iPhone and other carrier SMS since they aren't being sent as a RCS message. Try it out and see if it's the same for you, but this has been my conclusion, the system doesn't alert you cause RCS isn't a standard SMS reply.

Honestly I gave up. I can't get it to work at all. Almost everyone I know has T-Mobile, and even the people that don't I still get no notification. The stock one is ok and it's pretty much Android messages it just lacks some of the customization options. Stock also doesn't support GIF insertion from the keyboard. Just weird that all the other RCS compatible phones I have had before never had this issue. I was using Android messages on my s8+ without any issues.

Understandable. I too wanted to use it for GIF support. I'm hoping it gets fixed in am update. I actually submitted feedback to Lenovo being an ambassador for the device at my job. So here's hoping.
Maybe try this, it says it activates all the advanced features from the carriers in it Android messages. I don't get many texts so I haven't had a chance to try it out.

This only works with carriers who opt to use universal RCS profile. Sadly, T-Mobile uses its own version of RCS. Sprint uses universal, so that would work with Android Messages on Sprint.
T-Mobile is working on support. Some places are rumored to already having it working. By this here it should be out for everyone by end of 2017.

RCS (Enhanced Messaging Feature) Android Messages Not Working on Pixel 2 XL - Sprint

Anyone else having issues with RCS (Rich Communication Services) on the new Pixel 2 XL on Sprint?
I've had numerous discussions with Sprint's reps and Google reps, they both keep pointing back at each other which is odd.
Google is the one who hosts the Jibe platform and Android Messages is the default RCS client for Android.
The phone that I was using was the LG V20 (Sprint). The V20 is running on Android 7.0 and uses the default messaging app for Android known as Android Messages with enhanced features enabled (RCS).
Two of my friends have Pixel's (Original), one is on Boost Mobile, the other on T-Mobile. We are able to message each other with this feature turned on without any issues. We can see when one of us is typing and also see if someone read the last message, etc. It's not the end of the world for me, but this was and still does work on my V20.
If you'd like to read more about what RCS is, you can do a simple google search for RCS or Jibe.
This feature briefly worked on my Google Pixel 2 XL when I first set it up, but now no longer works.
I've disabled the Android messaging app, cleared the app's data which also clears the apps cache, forced stop it, re-enable the app, update it in google play and started the app back up. It begins to work but then stops. What's also weird is that my friends have to also go through this hassle that I've gone through to get this to work.
It def sounds like a bug in the latest build but neither Google or Sprint want to take a deeper look at this issue.
I'll leave this up to the community to pull together and see what we can accomplish.
Any thoughts?
I'm on the pixel 2 xl, on sprint, and I cannot even find the option in android messages, settings, advanced. You're further along than I even am (unless I'm in the completely wrong area.)
I'm on Tmobile and I also can't find the settings either, mind you I'm on the november security update. I have a friend who is on the DP1 8.1 preview and he has the option available. Not sure what's going on. I'm also rooted with snoke kernel and my friend is not.
Edit: LOL I didn't realize Tmobile doesn't have RCS yet
Glad to see I am not the only one with this issue. When I first got the 2 XL, I managed to get enhance features enabled by clearing the Messaging app data.
I kept having RCS turn on and off. It would show sending as SMS to people that I knew had RCS enabled. Then, if I checked later, it would show sending as RCS. If I disable enhanced features and try to re-enable it, it just sits on the spinning screen. But if I waited and then tried to enable, it would enable almost instantly.

See that's the thing, my buddy does have T-Mobile. He does have RCS enabled and also sees where to enable it within the Android Messages app.
We've used this feature prior to me getting the Pixel 2 XL and it worked seamlessly without any issues.
But now it's not working, well intermittently not working unless we both disable, delete data & cache, re-enable and update the app.
But it only works momentarily then stops.
Both devices are not rooted, running stock Android 8.0.
I've had enhanced features enabled and even prior with my Nexus 5X but never actively tried to get it working with anyone. I just don't text often enough ad everyone I message uses Hangouts or Facebook Messenger. I'm on Sprint too.

I'm interested in this too as I'm about to activate my 2xl on Sprint. I've been trying to get RCS to work on my MotoX Pure Edition but under Advanced, enhanced features is greyed out.
Don't get me started on the lack of features Sprint supports for our new flagship phone..... calling plus, no...wifi calling, no.... simultaneous talk/surf, no. Huge disappointment.

Sprint's customer service is just horrible. I've been on twitter DM'ing them and their all just clueless. I've had follow up calls with their "Tech support" which I can assure you means you're talking to a regular CS rep with no knowledge on the technology they sell or what an Android phone is.
At this point, I'll just keep nagging them and hope for the best. Eventually Google's support team is going to have to own this or at least collaborate with sprint on fixing this issue.
But It's just sad that we're in 2017 and sprint can't seem to get their stuff right.
I didn't even realize this had been enabled yet. I don't see it on my Messaging app.

Sprint Pixel 2 XL that also will not load RCS. I hit the enhanced features button it shows a whirly screen as if it is loading and then shows a screen that says "Excuse the wait..." Messages will let you know when this step is complete and I can only select "Got It" below.
I second the Calling + option, I'd love some voice and data at the same time. Is there any way to mod this to this phone?
Messaging is way too complicated these days. I mostly use GV and the Voice app. I do depend on several Email to text services that must go to my T-Mobile number. If I use stock app a simple email to text comes through. But T-Mobile usually converts these messages to mms, and Android messages will not retrieve them. I get a notification of message and "tap to download" which does nothing and the "message expired.". These messages work fine with Textra app.
Does RCS depend on IMS? T-Mobile already does voice and messaging over WiFi. This depends on your APN also. Need to keep the weird ones.
You can check IMS status with *#*#info#*#*
then 3 dot meni and IMS service status.
Notice Video is also available.

This only shows for me when I'm using a difference text client as default. Once I switch to Android Messenger, this option is no longer available.
RCS is working for me now on Android Messages. Can see if texts were delivered, read, and can see if the other person is responding real-time. They must've just fixed it

I just checked, and sure enough it is there for me too. No clearing data or anything was required, it's just there. Something may have triggered it (November update, my calls to Sprint about my data speeds being garbage, etc) but I can't say definitively either way. Obviously though the people I have texted with do not have the "enhanced features" because I noticed nothing different in the past couple days.

Text Relay Apps Like Pushbullet and Join Not Syncing Sent Messages from PC to Phone

I have a Pixel 2 XL with Android 8.1. I recently moved to Join from Pushbullet because messages sent from the PC were not syncing with my phone text app (Android Messages.) But the same thing is happening with Join in that I'll send a message via the Chrome Extension and the other person gets it but on my phone, I never see what I sent via Join. I'm guessing this might be either an Android Messages problem, 8.1 problem or a combo of both.
Yesterday, I got one to sync and that was it. If it matters, it was a single line message. But then tried a one word reply to someone and it didn't sync.
And just now, I sent a new message (started as a new message in Join in Chome to my nieces). One went through and synced to my phone but the other didn't.
I'm hoping it is something I just need to check and change.
This may not be a show stopper to some but if this is an 8.1 thing, I may need to go back to my Note 8. Hate to do that because I'm really enjoying my Pixel 2 XL and 8.1
Any suggestions?

I use Mighty Text and it works just fine. I send SMS/MMS all the time (several times per day) and have not had a problem with it on 8.0 or 8.1. This is split between using both Firefox and Chrome. I can see text/pics sent on my Messages app on the phone. What carrier are you with? I'm on AT&T.
I'm on Verizon. I thought about firing up my Note 8 to see if problem is there too. Only had this problem on 8.1
While I never had any issues with it, I got away from pushbullet long ago.

This is one of the reasons I left Pushbullet and tried Join. But sadly, the problem still existed on the Pixel XL 2. Pushbullet support didn't ever respond and Join Support said it might be a problem with Android Messages. Beyond removing updates on Android Messages or trying a factory reset on my Pixel 2 XL, I've been at a loss to what to do. I'd try Pulse but I think the same problem may exist.

Maybe an APN issue? Try comparing your APN with another Verizon user. FDR seems a bit harsh for this, but I think it is safe to rule out an issue with 8.1 or Messages because it is working for just about everyone else.

I meant the settings within the APN, particularly the MMS. You'll need to compare with another Verizon user and what is published online. If there is more than one (I have 3) try using a different one. Do you have another phone on your plan? Check that one.
Considering the other party is receiving the messages, it sounds more like a display issue with Messages to me. Join/Pushbullet/etc. don't actually send the messages, they just relay them to your phone and your phone sends them. So they must be making it to your phone if the other party is getting them.

It's not Pushbullet. It's Android messages. Use an alternative like Textra and it'll work fine.
Source: have pixel 2xl and use Android messages. Had issues, installed Textra: no more issues

I use Textra and still have the same problem. From my investigating, the only message that doesn't sync is the first one I send from Join to initiate a new conversation. From then on, all messages sync. Just my first outgoing one doesn't.

Look in your settings on Pushbullet. Also, are you using pro or free?
FWIW I use pro

Rather than paying monthly for Pushbullet Pro, I paid the one time fee for Join, so I haven't used Pushbullet for a while. I haven't used all of the features of Join yet, but it looks like it can do a lot more than Pushbullet and it's cheaper.
Plus another factor that may affect my experience vs yours is:
I'm mainly using Pushbullet to see texts people send me on my other phone numbers, on a different phone..I rarely use the desktop interface (though I do have it active when I am on my laptop)
So maybe that's why my experience is different from yours
I also noticed that texts sent to short codes that have 5 digits, don't work on Android messages well...I noticed that the Text gets sent, and the service responds, but the message doesn't come through on Android messages... Only on another text app.(ex: your bank)
My point is that Android messages has issues on 8.1 that it didn't on earlier versions and I'm wondering if that's affecting services like Pushbullet in weird ways.
Sorry for the off topic.. But it's sort of related

Well, this is why I suggested it, as there is no issues when using pulse.
Join doesn't seem to work as well for me. I'm just gonna continue to subscribe to Pushbullet. I did like the interface though. Nicely done.

I like what I've seen from all three: Pushbullet, Join and Pulse. But I truly prefer Android Messages because it just flows better with my Android Wear watch. I sure hope they fix the Android Messages issues in 8.1 and soon.

I mentioned earlier that Mighty Text has never had an issue with Messages. All text and pictures sent from the PC are captured in Messages with no missing/dropped/failed messages. Free version has a 200 message limit that I have only hit once. I use it on my Wi-Fi tablet as well.
I had some weird issues with Join and Android Messages on my 2XL. Sprint Network. Sometimes received messages would show in join but not in messages and other times sent items through join weren't showing in messages. It was sporadic and not consistent. Eventually I turned Android Messages off from battery saving (doze) and I haven't had a problem since.
