Rename the RUU to 2PS6IMG.zip
Place on ex sdcard
Boot to download mode
Press vol up to flash.
RUU will erase internal storage and completely wipe your phone so make sure important things are moved or backed up.

You need S Off to go back to locked. Why do you need to be locked? A locked bootloader is never needed unless your taking your phone back for warranty and even then you should be fine with unlocked.

Yes. Even if it didn't work you have the most common firmware and RUU are almost always posted for your phone. Also I wouldn't expect many updates anymore.

You mean to relock the BL, please stop that discussion. Leave it unlocked forever. If you need it for warranty it says RELOCKED anyway so they know it's been unlocked before. Relocking is just obsolete, it can even cause a brick sooner or later. And the only thing that will change is the status from UNLOCKED to RELOCKED, thats is ALL

Modified Status in Recovery

Hey guys !
As the title suggests. What does that mean? and how do i revert to official locked ?
I have s-on and have rooted and installed twrp, and cwm afterwards. And decided to go back to stock( because the current methods of changing to s-off are not working) by flashing through cwm a RUU backup. And flashing the stock recovery afterwards. I have also declined root access when prompted by cwm after RUU install.
What can I do to return to 100% stock ?
After entering fastboot The first text is ***MODIFIED*** and at os there is blank space. I want to return my phone to out of the box state.

Doesn't matter, you can restore stock ROM until the cows come home. You won't be able to change the modified flag in the bootloader. You need S-OFF to change the text to "official" just like you'll need S-OFF to change the bootloader "locked" text to "Locked" and not "Relocked" if you relock the bootloader.
You will NOT be able to have it show the same way it was "out of box" if you do NOT have S-OFF.
So the only way is to buy the s-off service with 25$ right?

Then you're fine.
Rooted, S-OFF, Modified status, none of those will prevent OTA updates. You MUST have stock reocovery and stock ROM for OTA updates i.e No changes to system files, no deleted apps, no xposed framework.
If all those are stock you can get and install OTA no problem. Don't even have to relock the bootloader for it.

If you can get your hands on a ruu with the same version number as yours or a higher one then you can update via ruu. Otherwise its a factory reset (which didn't give results) or go back to the seller. S-on + locked bootloader = definitely warranty
Other options :
Unlock the bootloader (which may break warranty) and re-install the stock software. I think you can find it in the general section - collection of stock backups and firmwares.

What's the error at that point ? And make sure you read up first on how to and what you are doing. As i said it may break warranty. So if you have that i suggest to collect warranty before attempting any options yourself

[Q] Unlocked bootloader with wrong file

So I just spent the last couple hours trying to root my phone. Only to realize that when I unlocked the bootloader i requested the wrong unlock.bin file. Instead of selecting the htc m8 file, I selected all other supported devices. I don't know if this is the cause of my problem, but since I can't reboot to bootloader, I feel that it is. Is the solution as simple as relocking the bootloader and then unlocking it with the correct unlock.bin file. Or can i just get the correct file and unlock it again. I don't know if any of it will work since the phone won't go into the bootloader. Thought I would as people that know more than me before I brick my phone.

So I've been reading around and come across some conflicting info. So I finally found the fastboot command to lock the bootloader but some have said to flash the stock ruu first while others say after. Can anyone clear this up for me and let me know if it makes a difference?
S-OFF - no need to relock the bootloader, just run the appropriate RUU
S-ON - relock the bootloader and then run the appropriate RUU

Quick reattack on this. I never actually went away from stock. As I couldn't get into the bootloader I never flashed twrp or anything so do I really need to flash the stock RUU? Just trying to figure out for knowledge purposes. Am I basically flashing the RUU to start over from scratch or is it just a precautionary thing?

Edit: those links for getting ur device in stock state not flashing MM firmware but i found it useful to share
The linked instructions are obsolete since the backups they were made for do not exist anymore. The updated instructions and the revised backups can be found in my google sheet (a link is in my signature).
But be informed that there is no official MM update for other versions of the M9 than the developer and the unlocked US version. If you want MM on any of the other models you need either S-OFF, sneakyghosts firmware package and the latest Viper rom or S-OFF and all files found in clsA's instructions for converting your M9 to a developer edition.

The bootloader only gets locked if you relock it with fastboot. (And because many people here seem to be missinformed: There is no need to relock if you want to install OTAs or flash a RUU.zip. The only things that don't work with S-ON and an unlocked bootloader are using a RUU.exe and flashing official firmware packs with fastboot.)

Depends if you are on a carrier, there is a T-Mobile variant that didn't get the update and if that's the case you need S-OFF to convert and update.
Let's start with some valuable information we need before doing anything.
Boot to download mode and write down EVERYTHING that is showing there. From there we can give the info you need.

I cant unlock the bootloader because i cant register to Htcdev.com(always send me back to the first page with all the spaces in blank) and cant use Sunchine cause i dont have root and the temporary root failed by the application. So im stock in 7.0 right now and i dont know what to do..

Yes that will be no problem but you will have to wait til tonight.

Hi guys. Sorry to join the conversation here. Hi @Mr Hofs. Can you please help me too? My HTC 10 is still running on Nougat, unlocked with TWRP and custom rom installed and I've just decided to try out Oreo now.
Which step do you recommend? Flash the Nougat RUU then OTA to Oreo OR straight flash to RUU Oreo?
Whichever you recommend I'll do. Can you please also direct me to download link of the needed file and the steps.
Thank you very much. You're a big help on Leedroid ROM but don't want to post there as it is off topic.?
Attached is the details of my phone.

Hi,
I can help you too, flash the nougat ruu because if you want to flash the Oreo ruu you need to flash the firmware itself first otherwise it won't work.
Don't have the time right now to search for the correct ruu link but if you have the time just look for the ruu.zip that has your OS number (2.41.709). Rename it to 2PS6IMG.zip and place it on the SD card and boot to the download mode. It will detect the file and asks you flash it by pressing volume up.

You unlocked the BL, now you need to flash TWRP and then SuperSU / root.zip to gain root access on your rom and then install sunshine and run it.
Edit :
Flash this file just like a ruu in download mode :
Link removed, need your CID and MODELID, fastboot getvar all command gives you the output. If I have that i can make a flashable TWRP zip file, of flash TWRP.img via fastboot.
Install this file in TWRP recovery :
https://www.dropbox.com/s/i26f93hfg4xwgfk/Super_SU.zip?dl=0
After that reboot and run sunshine.

Ok,bootloader unlock and i have root(magisk). Now i want to know if i "have to" or if "i want to " turn Son to Soff.I ask because sunshine is a paid application and i will like to avoid that if I can .But if theres not other option i do it.

To flash another firmware (convert from T-Mobile to let's say wwe Europe oreo) you need sunshine. There is no other option.
The only thing you can do at this moment is flash a marshmallow custom rom but no oreo roms.
