Is it too late to get the Pixel XL? - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

Hello everyone!
Basically my question is in the title, I am just wondering if it is too late... I am a proud owner of an HTC M8 running Lineage and Oreo but it is time to move on after almost 4 years. After this phone, I am a big fan of HTC because this one is an indestructible tank and since the OG Pixel XL came out, I fell in love with the phone. First, it is a Pixel. Second, it is HTC made.
I am thinking to get a Pixel XL 128 or to use a bit more money and to get a Note 8. Both used of course, I do not have money for new ones.
What are your opinions on this subject, is it too late for the OG Pixel XL? Is the hardware too old now in 2018? I want a phone that I can use at least 3-4 years.
I am hoping that you can help me out here

Depends on the price you pay, I guess, I have the 128Gb version and am very happy with it, also purchased used. The Snapdragon 821 (msm8996) is still a decent processor and the device performs very well for my needs.
Firmware support will likely end in October of this year, and security updates at the same time next year. According to Google anyway, however, the device is still in active development here on XDA and will be for some time to come, I think anyway. Foregoing some unforeseen disaster, I don't plan on getting rid of mine for a while...

I just got mine, a second hand for approximately 250 euro and i'm very happy
SD 821 still decent, and support will probably continue after google support ends on octobre

I just got mine. Unlocked, flashed P and played around with a few roms. Considering most phones aren't even on Oreo yet this phone is still very relevant I bet we even get Q next year.

It's not too late for sure. I have one XL 128gb. He died in January 1st so I had to start a RMA process. I live in Brazil and I friend in Charlotte did it for me. Anyway, meantime I purchased a Note8 and two Pixels 2 XLs. I just can't live without my note and all my two Pixels 2 are sold. My Pixel XL arrives 4 days ago and I can say that Pixel OG don't loose in anything. Camera are the same, my opinion, and the screen is far better than the Pixel 2 XL.
Pixel OG is a device that still worth to buy. Also Android Phone is coming as well

Should I buy this or something newer

It's finally upgrade time, coming from a Lumia 930 after my OnePlus 3 have up the ghost after an impact.
Been looking at options and Pixel 2 XL is coming up at £31 a month with no upfront cost (for comparison Pixel 3 XL is around £60 per month)
Am I going to regret getting this or is it still a worthy upgrade today and for the next 2 years?
Are the reported issues actually issues or just people looking for problems?
Thank you for your time
It's still a great device with a few years of updates to come... Price is Right compared to 2018 flagships...
I had a note 8 for almost a year and a xiaomi mi 8. The Samsung was awesome and the s pen was useful but the pixel experience is so much better. Speed differences are not huge, I don't play too many games so it's fast enough for my needs.
The camera is awesome, no contest compared to current phones tbh and with only one lens.
The phone looks great (I have panda white) and I'd rather have this pixel instead of the latest as I'm fed up of all glass phones.
If you like ugly notches and having to pay $80 for a wireless charger to get full speed wireless charging because Google locked down the phone to use only their wireless charger, get the Pixel 3. Otherwise, get the Pixel 2.
UPDATE: Google backpedaled and said it will start certifying 3rd party wireless chargers. Those that are certified will be able to charge the phone at full speed. Still seems kind of stupid to me considering neither Apple nor Samsung have any such requirement for their wireless chargers, but it's not as dumb as locking them all out.
Still an awesome device by today's standards. Still super fast, will be updated for a while by Google, it will officially get most of the new Pixel 3 features, and unofficially the other features (thanks XDA).
Get it!
I just bought it after the pixel3 release. Couldn't be happier
Buy it. There's no way the 3 is worth another thirty quid a month, especially as many of the upgrades will eventually work on the 2XL. Mine's a year old (Panda white) and it's running like a dream. Best phone I've ever had.
I can see it running fine for the next two years. Unless apps really start increasing their demands on RAM and processor by a lot, it'll age fine.
That being said, I still go with getting a phone within 6 months of release to get the most of it in the long run. Only benefit of anything longer is price being lower so if you can get a great deal for a Pixel 2 XL, then sure go for it.

I'd look at the OnePlus 6T or possibly even the LG V40. The Pixel 2 XL is great, don't get me wrong, but the 2018 flagships are pulling ahead. I have a feeling with Android 10, the bar will be raised for specs needed for a smooth experience. If you don't run a lot of apps at once and aren't gaming, the Pixel 2 XL might be fine, but as software and apps get more advanced it may start to feel laggy over time.

After buying an LG G5, I would recommend LG phones only to my worst enemies. The UI looks fugly and isn't as smooth as Google's, it's full of bloatware, the LG apps are worse then the original GApps they replace, updates don't arrive each month and new Android releases take an eternity. Hell, the G5 got Android 8 only recently! On top the developer support gets worse and worse with each new model (if you can unlock the bootlaoder at all), so you hardly can escape LG's version of software hell on earth.
The OnePlus 6T is most likely miles ahead, but it's made of glass. And you need forked versions of the Google camera to shoot nice pictures.
My Pixel 2 XL has been running smooth over the last year, I haven't regretted that I bought it for one second, despite its steep price.
So if you don't want to spend the money for the new version, get a Pixel 2 XL. Or get a OnePlus 6T if you must have more RAM. But don't buy the LG V40, it may seem fine at first, but you'll regret it later on.
Everything up to the G5 and V20 was unreliable, though I've seen good things about the V30 and presumably the V40 as well. The Pixel 2 XL being made by LG shares a great deal in common. That said, it still does appear the OnePlus 6T is the best value for one's money. The aggressive sales on the V40 are tempting too ($200 off).
I just bought a pixel 2xl yesterday and quite frankly I saw no particular reason to go the 3xl route at this point in time. This phone is a beast.
^ yes, it's still a badboy! Welcome aboard
I would recommend a newer handset especially if you can wait for the OP6T. I'm moving from.my Pixel 2 XL to the Mate 20 Pro.

Just to have something newer, shinier or are there real reasons? I see no point except the slight blue tint of the display to upgrade this fantastic device.

What if you can score one for $300 - $400. Seems like would be a good pick up at that price point even if you only use it for a year.

Well the OP got it for a monthly $39.76/month with no up front cost. Pricey but it's a lot less than the Pixel 3 XL for $76.96/month. Either way, both are way more than what we pay in the US

Yep. It's a gooder. I came from a 2016 Moto z griffin with a battery mod and this gets better battery life.
Still at 78% by the time I get home from work.

who thinks pixel 3 xl is a worthy upgrade from p2 xl

Hi chaps, anyone who upgraded from 2xl to 3xl ..is it worth it? For the screen alone and better haptic feedback? Do u feel like camera is far better factor too?

U probably right xd
Not that much of a upgrade for me. Maybe OnePlus 6T or Note 9. But Pixel 2XL is my DD!
The screen is nicer, the camera is a little bit better and more responsive, the phone is a little bit lighter and feels better in the hand not as Big And Chunky but I don't know if it is a reasonable $900 upgrade. I guess like going from an S8 to an S9. The phone is definitely cool though but I did return mine and I'm using my pixel 2 XL because it is not a big difference. I use that money to buy a 4K OLED TV 65 in
The Pixel 3 is more like a Pixel 2.1 imho
Just coming back from picking up a used 128gb pixel 2 xl and will be boxing up the Pixel 3 xl to return tomorrow. After a lot of faffing around I ultimately decided the "upgrade" wasn't really worth it. I had the 2XL, went to Huawei mate 20 pro, returned due to screen issues, then tried the Pixel 3 xl. Decision to return to the 2XL swayed of course by the distortion of the lower speaker of the 3XL....
Ultimately I'm gonna be happy to wait and see what Pixel 4 XL looks like

You chose wisely young Obiwan! Thanks for the insight for the other devices as well. I've thought about trying out the P3XL and OP6t, however, after reading many reviews on both, I just don't see the need. My P2XL is just fine as can be. We'll see what next year brings I reckon

Hey hey! Thanks matey, good to be back home
Upgrade? Nah. The days of 'upgrading' (more like replacing) my phone every year is over. Why would I need another phone that is just as capable as the phone I already have? People use PCs for 5+ years without a single upgrade because it's not really needed (This coming from a Gamer)... It's time we started treating phones the same. There's nothing newer phones can do that a phone from 2-3 years ago can't. Save your money and spend it on something that is actually worth it... And honestly, no one cares what phone you have. Don't treat it as some kind of status symbol... You'd be better off buying some clothes or shoes if that's your goal. And yes, I understand that not everyone views their phones as such, but many do.

I went from pixel 2 XL, to note 9, to op6, back to note 9, to mate 20 pro and now I’m back with pixel 2 XL.
It was a very exhausting exercise! I’m now content with the pixel 2 XL, offers great value for money used compared to the competitors and is a no brainer.
I was tempted to try the op6t but remember from the op6 that the speaker was very tinny. Once you go dual speakers it’s hard to go back to single.
So for everyone thinking of moving, don’t do it, wait till pixel 4 XL and see what that brings.
I'm actually going from pixel 3 to pixel 2 xl

I haven't purchased the 3 XL but I already know it won't be a good upgrade for me.
For one, the price for the 128GB 3XL is roughly $1400 CAD. :silly:
Two, that notch.
Three, the upgrades seem minor.
And finally, I had to RMA my 2 XL for screen burn-in and I got lucky with a brand new 2 XL! Fresh battery, got to experience the whole unboxing for the first time since my original 2 XL was purchased second hand.
Looks like I'll definitely be staying with this until the Pixel 4 XL, hopefully the notch size is significantly reduced, or better yet, completely gone by then!

considering buying in 2019

Hi as the title suggests i am considering buying the pixel 2xl now in 2019 and was hoping to get some feedback . Since he pixel 3 is now available the pixel 2xl has become affordable for me now as i could not afford it when it was released and i have also found some in brand new condition. What would the pros and cons. I am a big fan of stock android and the closest i was able to get at an affordable price was the oneplus 5t which i currently use. Two of my deciding factors in choosing the pixel is firstly the stock android Os and secondly the camera which is said to be one of the best features. Thanks for reading and i look forward for some opinions.
Price?
Approx £300-330 new condition
Key is don't buy Verizon Pixel XL 2. Make sure they guarantee "oem unlocking" switch can be toggled on in Dev.Option
Argos selling Pixel 2 XL 128Gb for £399. I purchased for self Panda White.

I just bought one for $140 verizon unlocked, i dont really care about unlocking bootloader since it has android pie and runs good. Cons is probably that i it doesnt have headphone jack and no sd card slot besides that its a good phone.
I say go for it. I wouldn't say there are any cons. Just the headphone jack and no sd card slot like timex said but unless you take a lot of pictures and videos space should never be an issue It's a great phone and stock android and the camera are big pluses. You also get access to google fi if you're interested, the latest updates and betas for new android versions and performance is never a problem in my opinion. I heavily use mine for social media, games and other things and never run into issues. Even if you don't plan on rooting or flashing a custom rom it's an all around good phone at stock and it seems like it'll get even better with Q.
Unless you're okay with the biggest notch out there, I would say wait for the Pixel 4 (rumours that it'll be a pinhole, so I'm real excited about that as it's the main reason I didn't go for the 3...)...
But if you have to have a Pixel now....the least I can say is that I'm using the Pixel 2 XL (still) and I still consider it a perfect phone; still a great camera, runs the latest and greatest of Pie, dual stereo speakers, no notch!, and an all day battery...
300 eur - good deal
£300 - hmm, a litle bit expensive for 2017 phone. I got mine one year ago 128gb version for 350 eur (verizon version).
I use mine one year, it's still smooth and fast and very good camera. Just look (design) isn't new-nice.
That's what I thought about the price perhaps a little high at over £300. But that see is for a brand new one I can pick up used one for around £260 or£280 but I prefer buying new when it's a phone. Also like I said will the pixel be a massive improvement on the 5T I currently have.
Camera will be big jump.
I am using a Panda 2XL, still a great phone and I will probably keep it until the 4 is released.
Bought mine Panda version month ago,no cons for me i can say, great device, all running smooth, paid for used, but no scratches or so,still in quarantie 250€,and i would say great price, happy to get one...

Benchmarks, camera photos
100% go for it, I got the Pixel 2 XL about a month ago and the phone hasn't let me down once. If you like taking photos all the time then I'd say get this phone as the quality of the photos come out so clean and high quality. I'm always blown away on how good the camera is and how good the performance runs on this phone. The only thing you'll probably miss out is the headphone jack thats literally it. Plus if you're interested they got the Android Q beta going on right now!
I considered, and I got it - and I don't regret it so far it's a great device!
Yess. Go for it. Got my black version of XL just 2 days back and I cant stop loving it [emoji7] You wont regret it.
Pros- Fluid UI
I had iphone 7 which i loved due to the buttery smooth interface, was confused with the android but this XL makes me forget the iphone ever since I got it.
Updates - Quick updates ( as you know)
Beautifully crafted design - As premium as 2019 flagships. Hand down [emoji7]
Camera - Freaking awesome!
And so much more. Just go for it.

worth it 2019?

Had the pixel 2 XL last year and loved it , ended up jumping on the Chinese bandwagon and got an mi8
Don't get me wrong cracking bit of hardware but there is no dev support going on.
Gpay has been broken for months
And my main feature I look for is the camera.
I was looking at the 3a XL but spec for spec the 2xl looks the better buy still
Im still using the Pixel 2xl, since 04.2018. IT have a one year. I've used S10e and S10 and I wouldn't want them. Pixel 2 xl still rocks hard. I don't feel that it is almost a 2yr phone.

Personally, if you can find one, and your looking for great value, and pretty good Dev support, the P2XL is a solid choice. Mine will be 2 years old in October, and I still get excellent battery life, monthly updates, and run stock rooted without any major bugs at all. Yeah, it doesn't have the best of screens, or sound volume, but everything is is pretty darn solid IMHO. The P3 series isn't much of an update, and see several problems with those as well on the forums. So there's by 2 pennies worth

You can get a used one on swappa for $248 right now.
Still pretty worth it. IMO the only reason to buy the 2XL is for the UFS since the 3aXL has eMMC so it has much slower performance in opening apps.
Overall, Pixel 3a is a great buy, especially if you have an old iPhone lying around. Google is offering $250+ for iphones as old as the SE. That brings the price down to $230 for a new phone. No telling how long it will last though. The SD 670 will be outdated fairly quickly compared to the 835.
If you're not shy for doing battery replacement on the P2XL, it will be a great phone for many years to come.
If you are shy to doing battery replacement, buy the 3a. The pixel 2 batteries are going to start going bad within a year and the performance impact of a bad battery is far greater than the performance impact of eMMC and the SD 670.
Also people are reporting up to 12 hours of SoT for the 3a. You will never get that from a pixel 2 XL no matter how many battery hacks you install.
Just managed a trade for my mi8 ,I'm pretty useless with battery replacements I knackered my old 6p
Got a p2xl today what's first thing I should do , just root or any preferred kernal and rom

So, who's getting the 4xl?

As the title says, who's getting one? I'm a definite yes. My wife really wants one too. She's def not a geek or anything, but, she loves the camera and the real-time translation using a pixel and the buds.
I'm in it for a design without the notch, the camera, solis, and the 90hz screen. I'm fairly excited about this phone. Can't wait for tomorrow!
You?
Definitely looking forward to it, just depends on the official prices. If the XL 128gb starts at 1000 I might just wait. I'm hoping Google has some nice trade in offers
I am in.
Unfortunately I dropped my 3 XL a couple of weeks ago and cracked the screen, so I cant't wait for a new phone.
I have had all the XL's since the start and have not seen another phone that I would enjoy as much as the google.
I'm thinking about it. But Only because Oneplus can't get their **** together and add wireless charging. One of the reasons I left them and the only reason why I'm haven't gone back
I think I have never been less excited about a Google event than this year. Just nothing on the 4XL wows me including Android 10.
- I want to see the battery life with 90Hz always on. Apparently it's by default set to dynamic 90Hz.
- Anandtech says speakers are lousy
- Overall design is dated
- Trade-in value of Pixel 3s is lousy
- No wide angle lens and no 60 fps videos
- Google put a lot of attention into things I don't use that often: Google Assistant, Night sky photography, motion sense.
No thanks. No premium price for a mediocre phone anymore.
I paid $1,000 for my 3XL on the basis of it getting guaranteed three years of OS and security updates, so I'll be keeping it until Android 13 comes out, and decide what to do with what's out then.
On the fence. Just wondering if TWRP will be made considering it is almost 2 months after Android 10 and it doesn't seem possible yet on the Pixel 3XL. My 3XL runs fabulously well for now. I guess it depends on perks.

I'll probably end up buying it. Just waiting on official price here in Canada. I bought the pixel xl, pixel 2xl, pixel 3xl. Why stop now.

I'm pre-ordering today as soon as it goes live, just like I do every year.
Google upped my credit limit unexpectedly, next purchase is Def a pixel 4 xl from Google.
Pixel 3 xl was the first phone I bought from Verizon since the Nexus 6. Loved the Nexus, but gaht dang Verizon screwed the goose with this BL stuff
I have purchased all the XLs and usually get the shakes this time of year for a new one.
I was not impressed by the roll out.
Less impressed by the trade in price.
I can wait a while
*and I am reading they are doing away with the unlimited photo/video storage perk
I will hold onto my 3 for a while now
No wifi 6 or 5G. I am not buying it. Samsung always comes out with awesome specs. Will just keep the pixel 3 xl
I'll be getting the 4XL but after a month or 2, when there should be some bug fixes and sales hopefully
I waited for the sale last year to buy. I just can't bring myself to pay full price knowing it'll drop a few hundred on a few months.
I do love it though.
Just got the 3xl recently and it will do me fine for the next year or two
I always buy a new phone every year. This year is a little different. Android has gotten to point where I only need to root for ad blocking. Almost everything I used to ROM phones for is pretty much included in stock Android. I think I'll sit this year out and wait for the 5XL.
I had it ordered and cancelled after thinking about it. Just not enough of an upgrade for me. I think I just like the look of it more than anything else. Might change my mind when holiday sales start but I'm proud of myself for cancelling. I've pre-ordered the past two years.
Got the 3 XL when it first came out and had a handful of hardware problems with it (even after multiple RMAs).
Returned it and got a 7 Pro but VoLTE doesn't work with it here in Canada.
Most likely going to get the 4XL for getting VoLTE back and the upgraded camera.
Not too sold on the Soli/radar hand waving gesture stuff though...
I have been purchasing the Google phone on it's release day since the 6P.. I thought about getting the 4XL.. but there are lots of things I've realized I am not fond of with this release.
- While I do like the refresh rate, I don't see many other things I'm too excited about.
- They did away with the fingerprint scanner - for FACE ID... not a fan.
- Then I believe the 4XL doesn't have dual front facing speakers, that's one of my favorite features
- Also it doesn't support the new 5G network that is starting to get released throughout the US. If I am going to pay this much money for a phone, i need to know that is has the hardware/specs to survive technology upgrades.
- Oh, and everyone is hating on the notch on the 3XL --> i have no issue with it. my phone is always darked/blacked out anyways, so it's irrelevant to me
- Then on top of it all, trade in value through google for my perfect condition 3XL only got me $260 for a phone I paid $1,000 for a year ago.
No thanks Google. I'm good. I'll wait.
Side note: DU for Android 10 will probably release sometime in the next month or so, and I'll completely forget about the 4XL anyways
