Hello, I recently rooted my wifes Note 2 that was on the latest OTA 4.3. Was not easy BTW. I did a back up in recovery of boot, system, and data. I figured I was good to go and start trying out other roms.
The first one I flashed was Macks Allstar 5.0 rom. Everything was great. Then my wife informed me that she did not have all of her contacts backed up to google and some were only saved to her phone. So then I figure I could just restore the original backup and extract the contacts and be able to install them to any rom.
Thats when everything went wrong. Everytime I tried restoring the back up,it would crash and recovery would do like a reboot. After many attempts I figured id try another version of recovery. After flashing many earlier versions of twrp and trying to restore, I finally was able to complete a restore from version 2.6. I was ecstatic. But then my heart sank again when boot always hangs on samsung logo. And that is where I'm stuck. I am able to flash other roms no problem but cant restore my original backup.
Needless to say my wife is ready to kill me.
Please if anyone could help me I would really appreciate it. I have searched throughout this forum and internet for hours and can not seem to find any help with this issue.
I am thankful to have been able to get this far with the help from the XDA community posts I never needed direct help even with prior phone rootings but this one has got me stumped. Thanks in advance
You need to flash Phil's recovery version 6.0.7.9. If you cant restore your backup with Phil's then I'm thinking you might be sol. Make sure you know where you saved the backup to. It's either on the phone's internal sd or external sd card. Choose the correct location in Phil's recovery and if it isn't corrupt it should work. You may also want to copy your backup onto your pc just in case because that's your only backup and doing a full wipe or odin restore could permanently delete it. Good luck.

Thank you for your reply. I am at work right now and left the phone with my wife with a working rom. I will try phils recovery when I get home. As far as backups, I have two copies. One on my SD card and the other on PC but if they're both fried I guess that negates my efforts in redundancy. It's hard to believe the backup got corrupt so quickly. I have another backup of the 2nd rom I flashed and that one wont install as well.
Is there something I am doing wrong? If the backup file is corrupt, is there a way to extract contacts seperately out of backup?

Life of a married man. Haha!
Well, as my backup file was done with TWRP, I tried method B with TWRP recovery and it wont work so now I'm in the process of trying method A. Will update once I tried it.
I think my problem has to do with TWRP not playing friendly with 4.3 ROMS. If that is the case method A looks like it will work.:fingers-crossed:

That's exactly right. Bootloader isn't playing well with TWRP recovery. Phil"s 6.0.7.9 seems to be compatible in most ROM vs bootloader situations. Don't use latest version of Phil's recovery as it doesn't work as well and most people recommend this as well.
If Phil's recovery won't flash your restore then Odin all the way back to stock unrooted LK8 ROM then root it with the Toolkit and flash TWRP from the toolkit at the same time. Then see if you can restore at that point.
Looks like this project has come to an end. My wife likes her new rom and doesn't want to let me work on her phone anymore. She was able to get most of her contacts back I will make sure she backs her contacts to google and I will try to convince her to install Titanium backup to backup all her app data.
Unfortunately all I have is a work issued iphone that I have no interest in jailbreaking. I really don't see the point.
I am still confident that I could have eventually restored her backup successfully with the help here.
Thank you tx_dbx_tx and coletrain for your help.
Hi Guys
First time poster here so hello from me, need a little advice please, I am trying to unroot my HTC One M8 (ATT) and I was going along quite nicely using the unlockr guide and then got to the "Flash the Stock Nandroid Backup" part and I am stuck big time!
Long story short I just can't find the files when I boot into recovery, I downloaded the stock stock Nandroid backup unzipped them or RAR and put it in the /TWRP/backups/ folder which I had to create the Backups sub folder. Then I boot into recovery mode and nothing, it can't see the files, I have the correct files I double checked I got the correct one but it just can't see it.
Anyone had this issue, I bet I am doing something stupid I just don't know what!
Help
Thanks
Stuart
If anyone could help me with this you would be doing me such a big favour, will be traveling tomorrow overseas and hoping to get it taken care of before I go. Thanks again
Stuart
It will be TWRP/backups/youserialnumber. Go into TWRP and make a back up of your boot partition. That should create the folder that you need to install your nandroid backup zip to.
Thank you so much for the reply, I did try earlier to try make a copy of the boot partition but I have never done it before and it didn't work out very well. Any advice or apps recommended please?
Thanks
Stuart

put the nandroid you downloaded in the folder that was just created by TWRP backup.
reboot to recovery and restore the backup ... done

Long as it's the same phone, and model number, i've never seen an issue . Just Make Sure
Not To Restore The EFS Portion Of The Previously Uploaded File, Or Just Download The Newly
Uploaded One Without EFS Included. Forgot To Remove It Before Uploading Last Time. lol

Good, These are nice to have.
One note, TWRP creates a directory structure from the serial number of the phone, so you can't just zip up the entire twrp folder
the backup would not be visible on another device with a different serial number. ( I downloaded the file and it's last folder in the path below)
So the path to my TWRP backup is
sdcard1/TWRP/Backups/my serial number/date of backup
So the best way to pack your file is just zip/rar the /date of backup folder
and instruct others where to extract it too
I.E -> sdcard1/TWRP/Backups/your serial number/put backup here
hope this helps.
I'll be starting my own collection of goodies for this phone on my AFH account soon and I'll share the links for all to use
I mirrored your file here >> https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24407100847292996
Stock recovery is here >> KIW-L24 b130
Also worth noting the full factory restore from Honor is here >> Honor%205X_Firmware_KIW-L24_Android%205.1_EMUI%203.1_C567B130_United%20States_Channel-Others

I'd like to add to that - when doing that, you should take care to change the device ID on the TWRP folder to match your own.
*swoops back to own forum*
Can you post a "working " not working " section into the OP? How well does this work? Are there features not working like fingerprint or camera?
Edit - my mistake...I thought this was a AOSP backup.
I created a backup, then deleted the the contents and moved the contents of this backup in its place so that it would recognize it, however when I try to restore it, I get an error stating there were no partitions?

Ok, I was able to get it all sorted out, I just had to calm down, think, and teach myself some new comand line skills hahaha
I downloaded the stock Firmware, however I wasn't able to install it since I had TWRP and it was blocking it.... so I found this tool, Huawei Update Extractor that can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2433454 Then used this Extractor to expand the firmware and extract the stock Recovery.img out of it. Then flashed that to the phone via fastboot. Now, I was able to run the stock firmware update via the factory EMUI update app. Once that was done I was able too boot the phone back up and I was suprised to find that it didn't wipe the phone, I guess it ran it as a true "upgrade" instead of a nuke and pave.... BONUS!
Anyhow, then I was able to flash the new TWRP recovery back in place and now I'm currently creating a backup.... which if I had taken the time to do in the first place none of this would have happend. Oh, well... who needs more than 3 hours of sleep..... its not like I work full time and have 5 kids under 5 :silly:
Hope this helps someone who gets flash happy and forgets to make a back up like I did!

As stated above on the link to the stock firmware.... I can post the stock recovery image tonight, its at home on my computer, but it'll probably be faster for you to download that extractor tool and pull it out yourself.... I posted the link to the tool earlier.
Restored Succesfully
Just FYI, this backup worked for me to restore on a KIW-L21 (European Honor 5X). What I did was to first make a backup, which created the proper folder structure and I then copied these backup files into that folder, replacing what was in there. Restore took about a minute and then phone booted in about 3. Thanks alot for this!
Deleted
I can confirm that it works with KIW-L21 too.
edit: after that my twrp didn't work correctly. Apparently there are some twrps that don't work with some devices.
I reinstalled twrp with this file http://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-5x/development/root-kiw-l24-usa-kiwi-t3305190
After everything was fine.

Boot.img - the kernel is different
I know because the OTG fix for the L21 will not work on the L24 because of missing libraries
Thanks for the Rom
Really Helpfull, Thanks
Yes I believe that is the case
I'm not sure on all the radio bands though

It depends on a lot of factors.
What ROM, what TWRP version, what partitions did you back up, etc.
If you want to get your phone working, you can flash any ROM of your choice from TWRP or restore stock image.

Backing up all the partitions was the mistake.
Getting your stuff back looks difficult.
If you flash ROM using TWRP, your media files and anything stored on your phone won't be deleted.
But all your apps and stuff will be lost.
My Question is About Twrp, if i make a Back-up of my system completery, and install a ROM and not liked her or bricked my device (Mi a2 Lite) i can take back again, right? without install a ROM stock? Thansk for Answering ? i make one time but Using a Clockwordmod on samsung Old i bricked the device and i Restore a Backup and Back
Sorry about My english bad
Yes, but use unofficial TWRP from ROM section not the official one.
Backup boot, system image, vendor image and data.
Works for custom ROMs, not sure about stock ROM.
Also backup EFS and persist once in case you lost IMEI or sensors.

I'm surprised that unlocking didn't delete your data, for me it did and it usually does.
For TWRP use fastboot boot <filename>.img to boot it and then flash the zip.
Normally that doesn't delete data, but always backup important data first.
I'm not sure how good TWRP handles encrypted data...I'm always unencrypted.
Before TWRP backup people say to remove pins and maybe fingerprints first (there are zip files for that) because then restoring will work better.
Good luck, happy flashing and first search and read if you are unsure.
