'System' taking up 11GB - is this normal? - Nokia 6.1 (2018) Questions & Answers

I thought it just might be a problem with my particular install but in order to receive the 8.1 update I've factory reset my phone and this 'System' category under Settings, Storage (labeled as 'system includes files required to run Android 8.1) is still solidly stuck at 11GB. This seems excessive to me, and certainly my Nokia 3 on 8.1 didn't have anything close to 11GB of space taken up in the System folder. I would have had no space for anything!
Does anyone else have the same issue? Or is it even an issue at all?
Thanks

We all have this "issue", it is too much.
Today I browsed the Nokia forums a bit and there is also theme about it:

me too !!! 12GB :crying:

I was thinking about something.
As on Pixel devices we have 2 systems, A/B boot, or how it is called.
So we use one, e.g. A and OTA update runs on the background on B, when the device is restarted it runs from B and next update is installed on A.
So, everything is doubled and it looks like our system has about 5-6GB, but on Pixels it is much less, if HMD/Nokia didn't fukeed something.

Very odd normally system os 6GB or less especially when firmware files are only like 1.2gb to download unless highly compressed or for some reason it's saving all the update files as well as the actual Rom , maybe worth contacting support for an answer
Sent from my Nokia 6.1 using Tapatalk

I contacted livechat to question this and this was the response bit vague but kinda answers our concern
Sent from my Nokia 6.1 using Tapatalk

Weird, we don't have Android Go, we have Android One, Go should be even lighter
I thing the support on live chat is not so good, I also asked them about accessories and the answer was so bad, "we have no information about it, please see our web", what I already did and said it in my question, so I ended our conversation with "OK, this is not helpful"
Also I'm following the Nokia support forum, but I didn't see any response from them there, only from users.

One thing is for sure - this problem has survived a full software update without being picked up. So I wonder if it ever will be.

I don't think so, as I wrote before we have two systems on device, so it will be always so big if they use "full Android" and it is x2.

Its 13 GB here. This totally sucks.

If this is an Android One 'feature' then it makes 32GB Android One devices equivalent to 16GB devices of the past. It's quite annoying to me as I have barely anything on my phone and only have about 8GB free. Apps like iPlayer don't support SD cards for caching and there's no adopted storage option on Android anymore.

No, that's not about Android One. A/B (Seamless) System Updates were introduced with Android 7.0 and are kinda optional for the OEM. The aim was to make system update process seamless for the user, but personally I would rather wait for 10-20 minutes for my phone to update instead of just restarting it and wasting twice as more space for the system.

Sorry for the off topic guys, can you kindly confirm if then Nokia 6.1 supports the seamless update with A/B system partitions?
Thank you!

just bought Nokia 2.2 with 16gb storage only to find after purchase that system takes 10gb and standard apps 4gb so there is only 2gb for me when I thought I was buying 16gb. Carphone warehouse did not explain this.

[REVIEW & VIDEO] 64GB micro SDXC cards - working in SGSII, HTC Sensation, SGSI

Although this was already confirmed by 3waygeek and Ghost77 (thanks for trailblazing this one for us guys!) prior to my replicating their results, I thought I would start a separate thread for this news, since you have to wade through pages of speculation in the existing thread before getting to the information you need.
I've already nearly filled the card, oh well... look forward to 128GB cards next year? Better start saving now...
There is lots more detail with benchmarks and so forth at AndroidNZ: Sandisk 64GB Micro SDXC cards confirmed WORKING in Galaxy S II, HTC Sensation, Galaxy S, and of course the original thread here.
once again, great video! You represent all that is good about Android Development in Australasia.
Nice video , here is beauty to compliment video.

Only place is Sandisk US online store as far as I'm aware. If you're outside the US you'll need to use a mail forwarding company to get it to you - I used Shipito and they've been fantastic on each of the occasions I've used them.
I bought mine from JMS.. Its a small electronic goods store in the UK. They sell alot of imported stuff. They have a few ps vita's that just came in. They don't release here till November.

Buying anywhere outside of Sandisk right now runs a very high risk of receiving a fake.
This is very good to know esepcially for the earlier models but seriously, I have no need for so much storage on a mobile device.

Samsung new UHS-1 series microSD for LTE phones

Samsung's memory cards were updated late Wednesday with large-scale production one of the world's fastest microSD cards. The new 16GB microSDHC card runs at the same UHS-1 (Ultra High Speed-1) spec normally used for the latest full-size SD cards, giving it performance that would previously have been reserved for pro memory for DSLRs and video cameras. Sequential read speeds peak at about 80MB per second, or roughly four times the 21MB of regular microSD cards.
The storage is ostensibly meant for LTE-capable smartphones and tablets, where flash memory speed could bottleneck the connection. It should nonetheless be useful for cameras that take microSD storage and support UHS-1. Samsung reached the density through a combination of its more recent 20-nanometer manufacturing process to build 64-gigabit (8GB) chip layers as well as a toggle DDR2 interface that can saturate the newly available bandwidth.
Release schedules and prices weren't given out, although mass production usually precedes a launch within a few months or less.

We need to know which file system those cards are formated in order to reach the high speed. If it is exFAT, then those numbers are pointless as all the smart phone storage currently formatted in FAT32 which is much slower.

It's a proper partition as opposed to a virtual partition like transformer prime. Wipe is fine, just don't tell it to wipe sd partition.
Only issue at the moment is that recovery doesn't have UMS, so if you don't have a booting OS and don't have backup/rom on phone then you are in a bit of a pickle Will be resolved when recoveries get more advanced. Very early days.

HTC received Android 5.0

Talks over in Elevate show that Google delivered Android 5.0 Lollipop. HTC promise to their top tier devices within 90 days. The counter starts now.
Who thinks they will get it done in time? Lets talk about it below.
They may get it done in time but there is no chance verizon releases anytime soon.
Now that the Play store has an option for carriers send their bloatware to their customers we might see it withing the allotted time. Plus the GPE edition roms should hit within the next 2 weeks. Giving us a little taste of 5.0 without the wait.
The play store option is almost getting to be a must these days. The system partition use is just getting way too high. Plus with changes to how root would work it sorta makes sense.
Speaking from past occurrences with Verizon and HTC working together, I say it will be about 2-3 weeks past the deadline

This also means the user can nuke the bloat they dont want. Thats if VZW doesnt hide a little piece of it in /system. Now with most companies moving away from the SD slot, It would make sense to lower system partition size so the user has more space for everyday items like pics or videos. Its a win, win for the user and carrier IMO

Seeing as how we don't have the selinux level and kernel that the new devices and lollipop are meant to have, I think we will still see system partition based bloatware on this device.
Once the M7 GPE gets the rom, would the GPE kernel be ported over as well? Trying to get an idea of how stable it would be.

Yes, as long as source is posted for it(which it generally is posted at time of release).
Then yes, the kernel source would also be ported for our m7 variant and should be just as stable as the Official release for Gsm GPE models.
Just the same as has been done with past revisions.

Update from Verizon - Pulled Back?

There was an update for my Verizon Note 10+ 5G which supposedly failed and was successfully rolled back. I checked again and tried the PC tools which give me an error message saying my firmware is not compatible with the PC update tool. (I am NOT rooted.) I checked again OTA and now it says there is no update which means Verizon must have pulled it! I see no issues operationally with the phone - Note my s/w version as well. Anybody else run into this?

With AT&T I'm more afraid of their updates and automated downloads/flashes than malware... lol, still on Pie.
Best to keep updates blocked, let it roll out and see how many get rolled over by it.
Give it a couple weeks and then decide.
With Q I'm still not satisfied enough to load it and as such the backlog of security updates remain pending.
Whatever.

Thank you for your reply but mine is specific to the Note 10+ 5G, so what you suggest is like comparing Apples to Oranges. I have noticed also as you can see by the photos originally supplied, although it tells me the update failed, the software version has changed and that may be why it also says there is no update available. I may actually be running the later version or not, there is no way to really tell, either way it was handled very sloppily by Verizon and is concerning.
However, I have also heard, Google will be discontinuing the Pixel line of phones so as they say, every company is screwed up, they are just screwed up different ways...!

The August update is a battery hog and it's also caused Bluetooth issues. If I didn't have to wipe the phone, I'd go back to the July update. Maybe enough people complained and they quietly pulled it.

Once I get a stable load that's running well, I leave it alone. Been running both Windows and Android like this for many years with very little trouble. As you are keenly aware of tracking down an update issue can be very time consuming*. Many times a hard reset due to malware be easier. Malware on Android has caused me only one hard reset in over 6 years.
I herd dinosaurs, lol, I take a conservative approach to updates because many times the cure is worse than the disease. A bare bones updated Windows or Android machine runs faster... I hate waiting.
Carriers are partnered with Samsung and jam their own crapware and app graphics "updates" in their too on OS upgrades.
These can make it usable... I remember the horror of Lollipop on my S4+, destroyed it... thanks AT&T. Not.
That's one reason I'm still running on Pie... with no issues.
*may be a settings issue. My Pie load runs best with all power management turned off especially 3rd party including Samsung. A new update means a Google search won't yield many solutions for it.
The first app I block is AT&T updates... no joke.
