I am sure this bit of the question has been asked before so perhaps someone could cut and paste the procedure but I need to unlock this SX56 AT&T phone because I use T-Mobile AND travel abroad quite a lot.
The IMEI number is 350314000995655
(I couldn't find the SX56 model number or the correct ROM code or the Radio number in your pop-down menu so I entered it on the next line)
Unlock procedure
Sorry for last postingjavascript:emoticon('')
Embarassed: Siemens told me that I need an IMEI Number and that AT&T would provide me with an unlock code for this unit with that IMEI number (which obviously they won't)javascript:emoticon('')
Evil or Very Mad
Is the procedure (for my unit) to ask for an unlock code and then enter it or is it to download
* SD Card Reader
* 1x64Mb+ SD card
* XDATools
* XDA-Developers Special Edition ROM 1.2
1. Backup the existing bootloader and operating system using card reader
2. Extract the XDA-Developers Special Edition ROM 1.2 using Winzip
3. Write the NK.nbf-file (in the directory English) to your Device
4. Running the Programs -> Phone -> XDAUnlock file will remove the SIMlock...
5. after this time, the original ROM could be restored as desired.
And if I need to, can I do all this with Infra Red and sync or with the cradle which connects it to the computer? I cant find any reference to my ROM or Radio numbers in the pull down menu here and am a bit confused by this.javascript:emoticon(':?')
Confused
No, flashing the ROM will not unlock your device. Search for the wallaby unlocker, or check the wiki, as it is there, sticky and has been mentioned before.
Completing unlock process and flashing
I was directed to the flash upgrade program to unlock the device at the XDA-Wallaby Home Page and did flash but nowhere was I given the option to unlock: However the flashing process failed in an unusual and probably not important way: It completed successfully but I have lost the stylus and couldnt figure out how to stop the battery by pushing a fine screwdriver into the hole shown on the host computer screen. All that now shows on the screen is COMPLETED and a number of close-together vertical lines at the far right quarter inch of the screen.
Is there some trick to turning the battery off with some special tool or have I in fact completed the procedure and simply don't know that I have or what to do next? (get to a screen where I can run the XDAUnlock program which I transferred over to the SX56 before flashing the ROM?)
I wonder if I should or need to take the battery off if I Have lost that tool which does this by pushing into the hole on the lower quarter of the unit?
A bit of self-help going on here
So I DO appear to have flashed the ROM and the XDA ROM now appears on the screen although with no real backlight: The DO YOU WANT TO UNLOCK also appears but when YES is pressed, nothing happens. In fact one can see the unit taking the command but nothing further happens and the question just hangs on the screen.
Is this unlocking a command which takes a long time to execute? Or should I cancel out of it and carry on with bringing up the screen and can I execute it later on? Or have I done something major wrong and is there any way of rectifying? Sometimes if I press YES hard enough, the backlight appears for a half second (and the YES command pulsates once) and then goes off. But the question about unlocking still hangs on the screen.
Is this something to do with the program not being able to unlock an AT&T lock? Or has the screen lost sensitivity in some way and if so, (last resource here, improbably necessary) is there a source for Wallaby screens?
FOr the benefit of anyone trying this
NOTE:
After a night of the YES command taking and then not doing anything, I tried MOVING the over-screen by trying to drag it to another position
This didnt work. BUT tapping on the blue bar resulted in a message telling me that the unit was now unlocked. And the 7-8 black vertical lines to the right of the screen now have reduced to one, a quarter of an inch in
(Mind you, tapping on the ok button on THAT screen still mysteriously does nothing. This is a ROM which works in a VERY interesting, unusual and unexpected way!!)
new problem - report of invalid sim
now i am having another problem and am not sure i shoudn't start another thread
'
I did repalce the screen and the unit now starts up and reports invalid sim.
Is there any solution or should I re-flash the rom again and see if that works, hope for the best?

I found the same happened to me first time and a soft reset did the trick. It may also be that the "Hard Reset" will be needed. I seem to recall that this was what I had to do with a couple of them. If your stylus is missing, a push pin and a bit of control will do. Just shove it in the micro hole at the bottom left of the device and hold it for a few seconds then let it go. If it does not restart on its own, follow that with a "soft reset" by pressing the point of the stylus (or a ball point pen) into the larger hole at the bottom left of the unit.
For the upgrade/unlock rom . . . the best one to which I have access is at:
http://www.landjtech.com/Secure/OutSetting/SX56/xdaunlock2.zip
Hope it helps
Anyone ever have the volume up/down buttons on the side of the phone stop functioning correctly?
Looks like the buttons themselves still work (they now scroll up/down on pages instead of adjusting volume up/down). Any suggestions?
I'm running Energy Rom sense 2.5, cookie hometab 1.6 and HDwalls with cookie patch.
Thanks
Didy ou install the keyboard fix after installing the energy ROM?
Thanks for the response. No - was not aware of one. I can check out the energy thread for it.
Odd though because this just happened yesterday (volume sidebar was working fine before then) and ive been running the rom for like two weeks now. Only new thing I did yesterday was install transparent tabs, a cookie tab fix and new wallpaper thru HD Wall.

I know there are reg edits available in cab form that change the vol up/down buttons into up/down scroll buttons. Nothing in your list would be likely to include that, but it's possible...that's the only thing I can think of that would change their behavior like that.
Thanks. I might just look to isolate those two areas and try to set back. I also have that zoombar app (to use for other purposes) but dont think that would affect it, plus I didnt have the problem until days after i installed.
Tried soft/hard reset as well with no avail.

I'm guessing you mean just a soft-reset (rebooting)..? A hard-reset is where you wipe the memory clean putting everything in the OS back to stock settings (or back to the fresh version of a custom ROM, if you've flashed one on to your device). If you've hard-reset and this problem still persisted, then you can pretty much rule out software as a cause...
Yes, my approach would be to just start uninstalling stuff in reverse order, soft-resetting and testing after each item removed.
Yep - definitely meant soft reset. I'll try your advice. Thanks so much.

No problem! Good luck, and let us know what you find
Hi SirPhunk
Deleted everything that I'd installed since the problem occured and still no luck :-/. Buttons on side of phone still scrolling up/down, instead of adjusting volume.
I also tried the Sprint keyboard fix for Energy roms, but no luck there as well. Any other ideas? Do you happen to know if theres a way to search for the value in my registry?
Thanks again
If you want to go searching in your resgistry for it, PHM_Regedit and Total Commander can both search for specific keys...I would just try the string "volbutton" or even just "volb*", something like that.
Now, even though you didn't see the issue immediately when you installed it, I think there's still a possibility that the zoombar app could be the culprit....I would try uninstalling that too (if you haven't already) before you start doing the extra work.
EDIT: It also might be easiest to just install Rhodium Keyboard Controller (attached below) and use it to manually map them back to stock function (don't ask me why I didn't think of that in the first place ). In fact, if you do that, try uninstalling RKC right after doing that mapping, and I'll bet they return to their stock function after that even without the app being needed anymore.
Sir Phunk, Thank you for taking the time to investigate and the response, Sir Phunk. I went ahead and dloaded the cab to my storage card, but cant seem to find the files in order to run and edit the keys manually. Sorry if this is a stupid question - I'm still learning the ins n' outs. Maybe this will help me fully install programs that may be hanging around (even though I went to the "remove programs" section and deleted them).
Please advise if you have a chance. Again, my apologies as I am still learning. Thank you again.

Will do...full instructions coming first thing in the morning
Hey stenuine, let's see if we can get this working for you...
First, I'm again guilty of not explaining things well enough (seriously), my apologies. That file I posted earlier is actually a .zip file, with 2 .cab files inside...it'll be easiest if you download it to your PC desktop, unzip the 2 files out of there, and then copy them over to the SD card.
[TIP: I would strongly recommend creating a "cabs" folder at the root-level of your storage card, and using that to retain any cabs that you run and know that work, even if you're not still using them at the moment. That way, you'll always have easy access to any of them, even through flashes and hard-resets]
The first file in that .zip is the sdkcerts cab, run that one first. It allows your phone to use many of the homebrewed apps and tweaks found here at xda. After that one's installed (do a soft-reset again if the install doesn't force that anyway, always a good habit), then you can just run the keyboard controller cab to install it. Once you have the app installed, the icon to run it is found in:
Settings -> All Settings -> System (it will say "Keyboard Config").
Once you get it installed ok, here's how to use it to get your key's mapped the way you want:
1. When you first open the app, you'll see what's in the first screenshot below(pretty much a blank screen).
2. Click "Menu" in the bottom right
3. Click "Add key" from the menu
4. You'll see the dialog in the 2nd screenshot below, go ahead and tap the volume-up button
5. Now you'll see what's in the 3rd screenshot below, the setup window. There's a lot of stuff there, but we'll only need some of it for this. First, in the "Key mode" drop-down list, choose "Direct key mapping"
6. Now you see what's in the 4th screenshot. Now what you need to do is click the "Key" dropdown list, and scroll all the way down to pick "117 F6-VOL UP"...if you did all that right, it should look like the 5th screenshot.
7. Click "Ok" in the bottom left of the screen. Now, you should be back to the very first screen you saw, but now with the mapping you just created (screenshot 6).
8. VERY IMPORTANT...at this point you must remember to hit "Update config" in the bottom left, or the work you just did won't have any effect. It'll confirm for you that it updated, and that's it! You just mapped one of the volume buttons
9. Now, follow steps 2-9 again, with the following exceptions:
Step 4 - tap the volume down button this time
Step 6 - pick "118 F7-VOL DOWN"
As long as you did all that, and hit "update config" after each one, you should now be able to close the app and have normal volume-button operation.
As you noticed there's a lot of versatility in this little app, so if that still doesn't work for you, there's other ways we can try...this is just the most direct and should work just fine.
Hey SirPhunk,
Thanks for your time and the very detailed breakdown. I was able to install the app and run it, but no luck re-assigning the buttons :-/. Tried re-assigning vol-up button to vol-up and vol-down button to vol-down, but no change. To test, I also re-assigned the "up" key on my flip-out keyboard to "volume-up" and still no dice. Made sure to save the registry after each change and tried with and w/o soft resets after the changes. The vol-up and vol-down buttons still just scroll up/down on the screen and up button on keybard still just scrolls up as well.
I saw what you meant about other functions for this program, just not sure which to try next in order to fix this issue. Thank you again.
bumping my post...
i just ended up doin a hard reset. My best guess is it could have been the zoombar scroller v2 app that screwed with the settings.

can anyone help me to update my knowledge ?
thanks
hold the center button when it tells you then hit install system.
Same problem here. I tried the above suggestion but it doesn't load any menu for me when I do that.
Any other suggestions? Thanks.
If holding the dpad button does not work, try pressing the centre of the screen, ( think of it like a giant dpad, it does work, in fact it is my usual method after too many times of pressing the dpad wrong).
The reason so many people have trouble with this is that if you hit another key when pressing the dpad button it will not enter the install menu, and it is easy to do that if you are a bit nervous or in a hurry to press before the pause ends.
I have large fingers, and often miss the keys, and believe me I have a lot of experience in this, so now I use the screen method instead.
also make sure you are only hitting the button when it asks, if you hold before it asks then it won't go to the menu.
Hello!
I am hapy to share this link that I just found!!!
http://www.attdroids.com/forum/motorola-flipside-forum/3230-froyo-2-2-2-a.html
So, seems that the dream of having some custom rom could be more possible...
Personally I would like to thank the Moto people that take care to make approval for make this beta possible and for sure to the original poster in the ATTDroids forum, marvin and the others that are already testing it.
I will also copy a instructions resume of him (marvin) in order to get an idea of the process:
"For the best result from this upgrade I suggest:
Backup all your data from your various apps
use an app to backup your text messages if you want to restore them
make sure that you calendar and contacts are up to date on google so that they can be resynced
Make sure that you have all of your usernames/passwords handy
Factory reset your phone to clear everything out
install update
Do another factory reset (probably not needed, but it will not hurt)
set your phone up from scratch (setting up your WiFi connection first will speed up the initial setup)
Doing a reset first makes sure that you have enough space and that you don't run into issues with misbehaving apps after the upgrade. When the backflip was updated many users ended up doing a reset to clear various issues after they upgraded and you should at least be prepared with backups before you start the process.
The first thing that Moto support will advise you if you have issues after the upgrade is to do a reset.
Be prepared for some of your apps to not show up in the market after the upgrade. This is not just a Moto issue, but an issue for any phone that undergoes an upgrade because the market signature changes.
Waiting at least a week after the general release and reading the questions/problems that show up in the forums (especially the Moto support forum) is a good idea to prevent any gotchas.
MotoBlur will try to restore some of your settings when you enter your username/PW. If you want a true fresh start set up a new MotoBlur account."
I downloading by now and for sure will be try it asap. I use linux, so I will also check the SBFFLASH utility that I already used in my XT720 before and will test if would work fine in recognizes the FlipSide (I almost sure that it will do, but I will report if this may helps since I found more easy to use SBFFLASH since I didnt requires any installation of ABD or other stuff, only the litlle binary excutable and run also from a Live CD).
sbfflash download:
http://blog.opticaldelusion.org/2010/05/sbfflash.html
sbfflash instructions:
http://blog.opticaldelusion.org/2010/07/new-sbfflash-features.html
the main advantage of sbfflash is that it could be used with the original Moto Bootloader mode that loads sbf so it will help with flash with original Moto 2.1 ROM and then with flash of Froyo 2.2 ROM beta
Best regards!
Ok, some feedback...
Well did my test, and the phone works fine and found some quirks so I worte them at the en of this post. Also, I had to use the instructions at this link in order to get the update.zip menu option (because Moto page with instructions on update are down by now, so I may suspect that is something goes wrong with moto providing us with the final update at least we already have this beta working for possible future custom roms...), so I will try to post a collected list of steps for easy on another friends around...

Hi!
Thanks for the info, tested and IT WORKS so, return back to 2.1 SBF is possible in case (I found previously the info about Fn+T keys combination and it works on 2.1 but no in 2.2, so glad that this VolumeUP+VolumeDOWN keys is working)
About custom roms from this, I previously was using an XT720 (but really need the hardware Keyboard and 850Mhz 3g Band in my country) so I goot my FlipSide for a solution, but, as far I remenber, one of the big troubles previously to tht XT720 got 2.2 was the fact that were no release, so the process that the Dexter dev had to use was a long Hack&Test Roms and codes from other model until got one working.
IMHO the fact of have a beta ROM that have tthe native harware support for the FlipSide may could make more easy to get a custom or at least "Enhanced" ROM (aka... crapware free, and with some useful touches like removing crapware & locking things as battery detection, overcloking, swap, more memory swap utils compatibilty, EXT filesystem supports, etc), but I am not a dev, so this is IMHO. And also I am happy that this beat at least reach the comunity, since is suspecting for me why Moto shut down the page about offcial FlipSide update and no more annoucements...
Thanks to all and best regards!
I have received info from a reliable source that downgrading the Flipside from the not-yet-released (or after it's release) Froyo upgrade using the available SBF files will brick your AT&T phone.
I do not have personal knowledge of this, but I trust my source.
Here is part of the communication I received:
Just so you know AT&T devices cannot be flashed back(downgraded). It will likely brick them. I would urge strong caution when flashing SBF files

If your talking about essentially following this guide twice, it will not brick your phone. I followed this guide, flashing to fresh 2.1 then upgrading to 2.2. Then did my cousins phone for him. Without thinking it would cause problems I used my motoblur login on his phone on the 2.1 step to make things faster (not having to ask his info) and afterwards my phone as flagged unassociated with motoblur that i needed to contact tech help. To save myself the time on the phone I simply followed this guide again... flashing 2.1 on top of my 2.2, then upgrading to 2.2 again. All works fine. That was 2 or 3 days ago.

Ok, so I just tried the official upgrade to the full (nonbeta) 2.2 on moto site.
Running the beta it shows that I did not have an available upgrade. So I went to flash back to 2.1 using the RSD method. I think my phone is bricked... RSD finishes like it normally does with no errors, but when it finishes and reboots the phone, instead of opening into the android OS it opens into a black screen that says
Bootloader
91.7B
Err:A5,70,70,00,1F
MEM_MAP Blank
Service Req'd
Battery OK
OK to Program
Transfer Mode:
USB
As I said before, I did successfully do this one time, so it is possible but for me it was a 50/50 chance. Good luck and wish me luck finding a way to unbrick it.

As I said before, I did successfully do this one time, so it is possible but for me it was a 50/50 chance. Good luck and wish me luck finding a way to unbrick it.

Yea I just did this and now my phone is doing the same thing...we are indeed BRICKED!! I'm working to try to solve this problem too. Let me know if you find anything as I can't figure it out! I really want this unbricked...I can't do ANYTHING!!
Well, finally I was able to return here after several very busy and hurry days.... too bad the issue of the bricked phones... really bad also that the info about the bricking risk was leaked several days after the beta sbf was leaked and that some of us use it on our phones.
However, I wonder about, if somebody may knows what could be the instructions of Moto Devs to the official beta Testers, that were on the beta testing process, for update their beta phones to the official Froyo after Moto ends their beta testing process... I suppose that tehir could be the official instructions to this beta testers so make their phones to normal froyos.
Anyway, I will ask the moderator of this forum to please change add the word OBSOLETE to the title of this thread in order to avoid more bricking issues, since is all that I could do by know since I am not a programmer that could help more about how to revert bricked phone.
Good Luck and best regards!

Bootloader

I am a newbie in this forum and would need some help to unbrick my tablet.
I have been using leaked ICS in the past 2 weeks or so. This morning when I started using the tablet, it was running VERY slowly. I rebooted it but it was stuck at Android screen for more than 30 mins. Running out of patient, I restarted it 1 more time and it can now only get to the Acer screen no matter how long i waited.
Tried a few things already with no success:
1. Hard reset using the pin hole bottom left - nothing changes
2. Go to recovery mode trying to use the HC rom (rename to update.zip) using volume up button. Once the green droid shows up for a few seconds, it turns into a droid lying down with a red exclamation mark. It will then restart itself after 30 seconds or so.
What's going on with my tablet? Any help would be appreciated.
Any help??
Cant use HC ROM...
As long as you are not BOOTLOADER UNLOCKED you can use a regular UPDATE.ZIP for your device... You cannot "DOWNGRADE" that is, you cannot go from ICS to HC again without some form of "hack" or "workaround"
See if your tablet allows you to re-flash the ICS build you were able to update to and post back... It may just be it corrupted some files...
Let us know... jejeje
UPDATE 1: And... Dont use VOL+, its supposed to be VOL-.

lol...vol+ if your like me and boot to recovery in portrait

I tried the vol - button (the one farther away from the orientation lock button), it seems like the tablet was not doing anything different at all. It will eventually get stuck at the Acer screen.
If i use the vol + button (the one closer to orientation lock button), it shows the text "Booting recovery kernel menu" in Acer splash screen. It will then go to green Droid screen with a spinning sphere. In less than 5 seconds, it seems to fail to boot into recovery menu with a 'dead' droid with a big red exclamation mark.
These are the update.zip file I found in the forum. They all gave me the same error:
Acer_AV041_A100_1.012.00_WW_GEN1.zip
Acer_AV041_A100_1.014.00_WW_GEN1.zip
Acer_A100_1.014.08_COM_GEN1.zip
Any more help? I can get upload a video to Youtube if it helps.
HOME Button?? Maybe??
When you get to the GREEN ANDROID... click on your HOME button and see if you get a bootloader/recovery type menu at the top left... If you dont get it from the GREEN ANDROID, try thesame (HOME button) while the RED DEAD ANDROID is showing...
When mine did that for a bit, I found there was a "hidden" recovery built in... Again, try to go to recovery and press the HOME button... You may have to press it for a few seconds...
Thanks for the pointer! It now shows a lot more information (while the sad Android with red exclamation mark is in the background)
I can scroll down/up using volume button for these options:
reboot system now
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
At the bottom of the screen, it is showing a whole bunch of yellow text:
E:Can't open /dev/block/mmcblk0p5
(No such file or directory)
E:failed to mount /cache (No such file or directory)
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/command
(repeat the above message for /cache/recovery/log, /cache/recovery/last_log, /cache/recovery/last_install
How can i select an option from this menu, btw?
I also tried to use the vol - button. I found that if i keep flipping orientation lock back and forth, it will show 2 messages at the top left corner showing "Erasing Userdata...Erasing cache..." in the Acer splash screen. Then it will freeze again....
PWR button to select
Make selection with Vol+/- and press PWR button to select... See if you can do a factory reset...
"
Or put the UPDATE.ZIP into your microSD and see if it lets you select the "Update from ZIP" message
Pressing the power button doesn't do anything. If i press it long enough, it just shuts down the tablet.
I dont know man... I cant get mine to there because I have the unlocked bootloader now... Have you tried either of the volume buttons... maybe the HOME KEY? that may be it...
I tried every single buttons on the device w/ no success. The home button only hide/unhide all the text. Vol +/- can scroll up/down in the menu. Pressing the power button doesn't work at all.
In the system recovery screen, it has the yellow text complaining about /dev/block/mmcblk0p5. Is there anything i can do with this?
It looks like I am running out of ideas to revive my lovely tablet. Is it time to throw it to a trash can?
Some people are trying to do it through APX mode but it can be difficult if you don't have certain info specific 2 your tablet...

Do you have pointer on what i can try? Since it's already bricked, there is nothing to lose to try it out.

my A100 does not work and face the same problem now...
I could not select the item to even recovery or anything.....
Any one can help?
I called acer. We went through the hard reset thing. When he found out that it didnt work he told me to send it to them. So im packing it up tomorrow. Not sure if they are gonna try and fix it or just send me another one. We will see. Will keep u posted
I have been having the same problem. I can get into the system recovery menu from the dead android, but I don't know how to select menu items.
I've tried all the buttons on the device, but none work.
EXACTLY the same symptoms and exactly the same issue with not being able to select anything off the recovery menu.
Ugh.
Unfortunately mine is rooted so I assume if I send it in to Acer I will have to pay for the repair myself.
I had the same problem on my son's pad, tried every type of reset w/o any luck I finally got tired and called Best Buy they told me to bring it in and they tried the same resets before giving up and shipping it to Acer for repair. I just told them the screen froze after ICS update and 4 days later my son has his pad back in working order.
