Hello all,
I'm currently running this stock+ 7.1.1 (Nov. security patch) custom rom (Found it here - https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z-play/development/rom-nov-patch-npns26-118-22-2-8-t3717037 )
and am on TWRP 3.2.0-0.
I'd like to flash the official Oreo update but after doing a lot of research It looks like I need to be on the stock 7.1.1 February patch in order to sideload 8.0 (https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z-play/help/sideload-addison-oreo-8-0-update-noob-t3779630) but I'm having a hard time getting a clear answer on how to go about that. It sounds like I can fastboot flash stock 7.1.1 feb. but I'm seeing posts about how the bootloader can be bricked and I honestly have no idea what I'm doing
Should I just wait for a Custom Stock 8.0/8.1 ROM like the one I'm running now that I can just flash in TWRP?
1) You are correct in that the official Oreo OTA requires either the Feb 2018 security patch Nougat 7.1.1 firmware or the most recent leaked Oreo soak test. The most straightforward way would be to download the Feb 2018 stock firmware and flash that via fastboot. You do not have to re-lock your bootloader to flash the stock ROM, but I would recommend you take a backup of your device in TWRP and keep the backup safe, in case the flash goes wrong.
Here's a link for the fastboot stock ROM for the Feb 2018 stock firmware: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=76180201&postcount=21
Flashing commands and the guide for setting up your computer with ADB and fastboot can be found here https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z-play/how-to/guide-relock-bootloader-to-lasted-stock-t3718190 If you do not want to re-lock your bootloader, you can omit the second set of commands and if you wish to keep your data, you can try and omit fastboot erase userdata though you may wish to include the erase userdata command for a clean flash.
Thus, if you wish to simply revert back to stock with the Feb 2018 firmware - no bootloader locking, and try to keep your data - you could use these commands (though I have used the same set of flashing commands in the ADB terminal to flash stock firmware, I do not own a Moto Z Play - I have a G4 Plus, so you may wish to wait for a Z Play owner's input. These are however standard fastboot flashing commands for Motorola stock firmware).
Code:
fastboot getvar max-sparse-size
fastboot oem fb_mode_set
fastboot flash partition gpt.bin
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader.img
fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
fastboot flash fsg fsg.mbn
fastboot erase modemst1
fastboot erase modemst2
fastboot flash dsp adspso.bin
fastboot flash logo logo.bin
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.0
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.1
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.2
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.3
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.4
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.5
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.6
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.7
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.8
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.9
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.10
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.11
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.12
fastboot flash oem oem.img
fastboot erase carrier
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase DDR
fastboot oem fb_mode_clear
1a)You may wish to verify that the number of system.img sparsechunks is the same in the above command list as in the unpacked firmware folder.
1b)Be aware this procedure will replace TWRP with stock recovery, remove root and any modifications you've made. If you are not happy with that, then you may wish to wait for the Oreo TWRP flashable stock ROM.
1c)This procedure should update your bootloader to the Feb 2018 C1:14 bootloader. Please do not downgrade your device's stock firmware to older stock versions if you can avoid this - or if you do downgrade, in general do not use OTA updates. This warning also includes attempting to downgrade to the Dec 2017 firmware to use the Oreo soak test OTA - do not use the Oreo soak OTA if you have downgraded from the Feb 2018 stock bootloader. Downgrading your stock firmware is not usually the issue, but doing so leaves your device with a newer bootloader but older system (.e.g Feb 2018 bootloader, Dec 2017 system firmware). This downgrade mismatch between the bootloader and system is what can lead to hard bricks, particularly if the OTA-supplied bootloader and your device's bootloader are substantially different (eg. the OTA attempts to flash a much older bootloader or a different bootloader over your newer bootloader - OTA updates do not appear to verify your bootloader version, they just assume your bootloader is the same version as your system firmware). The blankflashes we have do not appear to rescue devices bricked with previously flashed with the newest bootloaders, so be careful if you do downgrade your stock firmware. If you see yourself downgrading in the future, you may wish to wait for the TWRP flashables, which do not usually affect your bootloader version. Only full stock ROMs and stock OTA updates care about the bootloader version.
1d)After flashing the Feb 2018 firmware, your device should be booting. However, if you encounter any instabilities, you may have to factory reset your device. Depending on how different the TWRP flashable of the Dec 2017 firmware you have is and the stock firmware, you may not see any instability, but that's why the TWRP backup before you flashed the stock firmware is there, in case you have to erase your data.
1e)Then, you should be able to sideload the Oreo OTA or if you're somewhere where the OTA has been deployed, you should see a notification to download. It seems that the OTA will take some time to install and appears to stall at certain points, so you may wish to allow plenty of time for the flash. Also, ensure your device is powered or has plenty of battery whilst the flash is proceeding. Also, I think we do not currently have a fastboot Oreo stock ROM, so if you choose to root or modify your device after flashing Oreo, ensure you have a backup.
2)You could wait for the TWRP flashable if that's easier - as I mentioned above, you would not have to worry about your bootloader version since TWRP flashables don't affect the bootloader (though I recall some ROMs have a bootloader requirement) and may allow you to keep TWRP on your device. Hopefully there's an Oreo TWRP flashable coming along.
Another alternative to what echo92 posted is to upgrade to 7.1.1 December security patch, apply the 4 soak tests and then the final OTA.

Hello all,
I'm a bit confused about the process of taking my current '3' ROM and changing it to the official Lenovo Rom.
I have downloaded the lenovo drivers (installed and ok) phone is in debug mode.
I have downloaded the stock rom from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/lenovo-p2/development/7-0-lenovo-p2a42-stock-nougat-update-t3581517 and have adb / fastboot.
I know I have to use the volume rocker and powerbutton to get into the boot mode but I don't know the commands for adb or fastboot. I have changed the name of the rom to 'update'
Can someone please advise me on the commands I am meant to enter to get this onto my phone please?
Thanks in advance,
Cue
Copy all the code below, paste it to a new text file on your PC and save it as All Files instead of .txt and name it a fastboot.bat. Place the fastboot.bat in the adb/fastboot directory, also place the unpacked rom in the same path. Run it as admin. Profit.
Code:
fastboot flash partition gpt_both0.bin
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader.img
fastboot flash logo logo.bin
fastboot flash boot boot.img

fastboot erase customize

Hi, op here.
Firstly, thank you for responding! Your instructions seem very clear. When i had a look at the contents of the ROM (in zip) i couldn't see any of the systemchunk files you mention, are they hidden deep somewhere?
Regards,
Cue.
If your phone is stock the Rom can be updated without fastboot or a PC.
All the instructions are in that thread.
Huh. Surely just boot into recovery and install the update.zip? No need to have it connected to pc.
Hello all,
Yep. I un-encrypted the sd card copied the zip onto it and booted up that way. Very easy. Now running stock directly from Lenovo which I am very happy about! It also pushed the new 78mb update as well.
Thank you for all your input.
same way i did it too theirs no need to do it through fastboot method just like the other people i did it through the built in recovery by renaming the Nougat rom to update.zip works fine and you will get another update ota straight after t obring it right up to date.
Sounds like you guys have this sorted :highfive:
Just for completeness, can somebody upload the original 3 rom? It just helps out the person who thinks they have a hardware issue and may need to return the phone to 3.
If you try and return your phone and it doesn't have the original 3 rom, your chances of a good outcome are obviously less as you have tampered with the phone etc.
The warranty is with Lenovo Not three.
Doubt there'd be an issue as the bootloader will still be locked and it's an official Lenovo Firmware.
Since flashing nougat and a factory wipe my VOLTE is now working.
I did the same flashed nougat and volte is working but only shows up some times not as much as I'd like is their any way to get volte to work more often. In my bedroom where the signal is weak I don't get the volte symbol at all.

How you enabled VoLte on nougat? You are on stock rom or branded?
I'm on stock unbranded.
VOLTE settings now show up in phone menu and it just works. I had to factory reset though as initially it didn't work after flashing nougat.

Is it safe to flash gpt.bin? With other images there was a risk of hard-bricking if something went wrong there.
I only want to update my bootloader and firmware, so for that I'd do:

fastboot flash bootloader bootloader.img
fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin

fastboot erase carrier
fastboot erase DDR
fastboot oem fb_mode_clear
Question is if I should exclude the gpt.
Also: Is this compatible with reteu, or for what variant is it? I have XT1635-02 reteu.

Just a headsup, updating only the GPT, bootloader and parts of the firmware is risky - unless you're already on the same patch level of the firmware. This is likely because only a partial flash may result in a mismatch between your system and your bootloader in terms of patch level. I don't recall the GPT causing hard bricks, it's more the bootloader that's a big cause of bricks because of having the aforementioned mismatch.
Thus, if you accept OTA updates, the OTA update will attempt to patch your device thinking that your system and bootloader are on the same patch level. As you've only done a partial update, the OTA will either fail or successfully patch, only to corrupt your mismatched bootloader, leading to a hard brick. We've seen this behaviour with downgrading a device's system (but not bootloader), so it'd be a similar state to your device if you updated like this and then accepted an OTA, and this bricking behaviour has been observed on partially updated Moto G4/Plus, Z Play and X devices, to name a few. Of course, you may receive an OTA update that may bring you to the same patch level as your updated bootloader/GPT, which may work, but it's a gamble.
Thus, if you're gonna update, fully update to the same patch level (that includes modem as well), do not mix and match parts of different builds (or if you do, remember not to update via OTA).
As for whether this build is suitable for EU devices, hopefully those who uploaded the stock ROM can comment.

I'm running LineageOS and am only looking for a way to update my bootloader and modem firmware.
What confuses me about this: It says NPNS, instead of just NPN or MPN. What's the meaning of those abbreviations?
The listed baseband version ends in an R. The one of other people ends with an e. It this just a typo?

Hmm, I don't know if it'll work - in theory, it could as Lineage OS only affects your system/data. Of course, you'd have to remember that if you were to revert back to stock, to reflash at least the same stock ROM as your bootloader patch level.
Still would be better to completely flash the same stock ROM onto your device (of course this would wipe Lineage and TWRP off your device). What do you hope to gain from updating your bootloader/GPT and modem compared to your existing firmware?
As far as I know:
MPN - Marshmallow firmware
NPN - Nougat firmware
NPNS - Nougat firmware with added security patch updates
Usually your baseband, from what I've seen, ends in R (e.g. for Moto G4, our latest basebands end in 62.01R). If it ends in e, it's either a typo or something has gone wrong with the underlying firmware, I've not noted working modem firmware working if ending in anything other than R.

My current baseband ends in an e, according to the Phone Status page in my settings. See attached image.
Just want to be up to date with what LaOS expects. As it declares 7.1.1 to be the target, and my device has not gotten any firmware updates since the first 7.0 firmware which it updated to when I got it.
On another note, putting the filename into google ends up with this link: https://rsdsecure-cloud.motorola.co...ubsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml.zip
Looks pretty official to me. The sha1sum of that file is e94b9690de5417b4499d8995726ccaf5d0492d5e
So whats are the correct steps?
Should I flash gtp or not?

Hi, hyoga68. I´ve updated my Moto Z Play using RSD, but you can do by prompt. I think you´ll be in trouble if you downgrade ROM, but in this case we´ll be updating, with the newest ROM avaible.

I am currently on lineage OS 14.1 (7.1.2) dated 18.09.2017.

Is there a way to go full stock and also start to receive OTA updates. Can someone provide me with full guide with links?
First you need exactly your software channel and the build of your baseband and bootloader. You know how to get this information?
After a lot of tries, finally was able to go back to stock. Will be compiling a guide for other to follow with links.
On latest 7.1.1 with August patches.
Is there a problem with audio fx,
Even viper4android not working.

Process to go from custom rom back to stock (August update)
There are several guides on going back from custom rom to full stock, but still I made this guide with latest links. I just went from LOS 14.1 back to full stock. Below is the step I took:
1) Download and install minimal ADB AND FASTBOOT
I used version 1.4.2 which is the latest version https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=745425885120698566
2) Download and install motorola drivers
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/88481
3) Download the latest firmware
I used ADDISON_NPNS26.118-22-1 which has august security updates https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=673368273298986785
4) Extract the zip file (firmware) and move all its contents to the folder where you have installed minimal adb and fastboot
5) Create a text file, add the following text to it and save it as "launch.bat" in the same folder.
echo off
fastboot getvar max-sparse-size
fastboot oem fb_mode_set
fastboot flash partition gpt.bin
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader.img
fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin

6) Switch off your phone and open it in fastboot mode (press power and volume down button for few seconds after phone as switched off)
7) Connect your mobile to your computer
8) Click on the launch.bat file that you saved and it will install stock firmware on to your mobile. It will take a couple of minutes. (It will wipe everything on your mobile so take a backup of your important data)
9) Once the process is complete, it will ask you to enter any key, after which it will reboot itself.
Once rebooted, you will have full stock, non rooted, and latest firmware with august patches.
Is this works with European version of Moto Z Play? Like I bought it from France. Thanks.
And can we do OTA updates after doing this?
Thank you so much for this guide, my phone was rebooting to recovery every single time and nothing worked. I flashed this rom as you said and my phone just booted and it's working. I can't believe it.

Thanks a lot for this guide! Just wanted to ask if it's safe and stable to root this and pass safetynet check.
Thanks for you time
Only way to root and still pass safetynet is via magisk
But unfortunately it needs a custom kernel with f2fs fix. However with 7.1 update motorola fixed it but broke some other things.
There is not a custom kernel for 7.1, so till then no way to root and have safety net.
But you can easily root via magisk

Hello, I'm a Motorola Moto G5 owner and I rooted my device some time ago.
Now i found out there is an official motorola update which brings our moto g5 from nougat to oreo. I'd want to update my phone but I have the little problem I cannot update my phone using the regular "System Updates" section in settings because I have a custom recovery and every time I try to update the phone just boots in twrp and to use it I must restart in bootloader and then press on start.
I've found online some official ota updates zips so my question is: Can I just install these zips with the install zip twrp function instead of reflashing stock firmware just to install a few updates? Is there another more simple way to update this damn phone? (I have Magisk 1.19, I'm on build NPPS25.137-93-8 and I'd want to get to the latest one)

Firmware OTA zips can only be installed on a totally unmodified stock system image
You will need to flash the stock firmware via fastboot and I recommend to lock the bootloader to ensure that the firmware is totally unmodified before doing any ota updates else you risk hard bricking the device
Firmware can be found

Ok well, how to lock bootloader (Right now I have unlocked bootloader)? How to reunlock it after (Do I just need the same guide to unlock as the first time?)? But most important, how to install the stock image by fastboot? (What's the exact command?)
Oh well, I just noticed the firmwares you sent me are already on Oreo 8.1.0, Could I just install one of them and then reroot the phone?

Yes you can flash the latest firmware for your device and root with magisk
Google is always your friend for how tos
Code:
fastboot oem fb_mode_set
fastboot flash partition gpt.bin
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader.img
fastboot flash logo logo.bin
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash dsp adspso.bin
fastboot flash oem oem.img
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.0
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.1
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.2
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.3
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.4
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.5
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.6
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.7
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.8
fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
fastboot erase modemst1
fastboot erase modemst2
fastboot flash fsg fsg.mbn
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase userdata
fastboot oem fb_mode_clear
fastboot reboot
You can stop here if you intend to root etc or carry on if you want to relock the bootloader
Relock bootloader (note if you do this you won't be able to flash twrp or root etc)
Code:
fastboot oem lock
fastboot oem lock
fastboot flash oem oem.img
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.0
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.1
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.2
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.3
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.4
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.5
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.6
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.7
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.8
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot oem lock
Device will restart
Now flash the entire firmware again (first list)
Note unless you have all the unlock keys you may not be able to unlock it again
Okay, so im new to this stuff and still i managed to root the phone and flash RR 7.1.2. But i tried to unroot it and this happend:
I only have access to the bootloader and thats it. No recovery, no ROM nothing....when i start ti, it says that my phoe is unlocked and its dangerous and that the phone will boot in 5 secs but it never does....plz help me..and i wanna know where can i learn about all this stuff...its freaking me out since this the only phone i have.....plz help me..
You have two options
1 - flash twrp recovery and then use it to flash a custom rom
Assuming you have named the recovery image recovery.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1MLlljM7BzMj9Da57LeyBHyg81cHdW1cB
Then wipe system data cache/format data & follow procedure to flash a custom rom
2 - flash stock rom firmware which can be found (plenty of guides out there for how to just search)
https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/cedric/official/
If you have unlocked the bootloader it will always says your device is not secure unless you flash a modified boot image

Dude, I'm a total idiot at this stuff...
I was trying to flash the stock ROM by some help from a youtube channel called Andoid Doctor. I used the codes he gave me and the stock firmware he provided me for cedric. But all my computer showed was some slot error.
I'd really appreciate it if you helped me out.

Firmware must be the same or newer
See the link in my post above for all the firmware - choose the right one for your region
If you don't know which to choose just use this one

fastboot flash dsp adspso.bin
fastboot flash oem oem.img
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.0
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.1

fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.5
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.6
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.7

Wasn't trying to go back to stock myself (though I did have to in the end) but this was the only rom I found that worked full stop. Thanks so much for this.
