[Q] Custom ROM Installation Help

I have the Galaxy S III SGH-i747m model on stock Jelly Bean 4.1.1 ROM on the Canadian Rogers network. (I live in BC)
I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to install a custom ROM. I have rooted and installed Super User, and have flashed the TWRP Recovery ROM v2.4.1.0 I still have the stock kernel and haven't mucked around in the permissions besides installing SuperUser SU app from Google Play store. Right now, I have managed to wipe out my entire internal storage. I have everything backed up on the google server, so I'm not too worried, but I have no OS right now. Regardless, I have tried many times with many different custom ROMs, and everytime I get a Status 7 error and a failed ROM flash. I have been trying for weeks to find out what I'm doing wrong, but can't seem to find anything that works. Can anyone please help me out with a step by step guide to install a custom rom? Heck, even to re-install my stock ROM would be better than nothing at this point. The last guide I tried to follow was Cyanogenmod 10.1. The file was called Liquid Smooth.
I currently have the ROM file and the gapps pakage on my external SD card, but, everytime I try to install it I get that Status 7 error.
Thanks in advance.

Yes...stupidly... I formatted as well, thinking that that might solve the problem. Where can I get the latest recovery version? And, sorry, I'm new, so, not sure what you mean by "hit me back". But thanks for the reply.

make sure you have the correct ROM and gapps (compatible with your model). then i would try a different recovery.
you could download this flashable clockworkmod recovery zip and place it on your external sd card: http://d-h.st/8qP
it's not a touch version. you'll have to use the vol up and vol down buttons to navigate and the power button the select.
in twrp, mount external sd and then flash the CWM recovery like you would a rom. reboot into recovery.
make sure the external sd is still mounted and flash ROM & gapps twice. reboot

I can't seem to do anything now. Did I brick my phone?
Can you not get into recovery any more? If you can why dont you post the links for the rom you are trying to install and we can tell you if its the right one. Also do you have a external SD card to put the ROM and Gapps on

he has the rom and gapps on the external already.
if you can get into download mode, i'd try restoring via odin
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1968625&highlight=stock+firmware
1. Extract contents of the zip/rar archives
2. Wipe data-factory reset/cache/dalvik-cache
3. Plug phone into PC
4. Place the phone in Download Mode (vol dwn + home + power). Press volume up when prompted
5. Open Odin and ensure the COM box is highlighted, detecting your device
6. Uncheck the Auto Reboot option
7. In the PDA box, select the .tar.md5 file you downloaded
8. Flash the file by hitting Start
9. Once you get a Success message, pull the battery and then replace. Immediately go into recovery (vol up + home + power. release power button at Galaxy S3 logo and/or vibrate).
10. Select Wipe data/factory reset, then wipe cache. Reboot
you can then do some research and decide what files/procedures you want to try if you wish to root again and flash custom firmware
Thanks for the help guys. I am attempting to restore my phone right now. Will let you know how it went.
OK! Up and running! And I have it rooted with the latest TWRP recovery image installed. Now I just need to find a good custom ROM. Thanks againg guys!

[Q] cm11 goomanager install twrp but cant replace cwm

As the title said, I just flashed a custom rom into my device ( CM11 kitkat 4.4.2)
Its the first time i root and flash my device
So now, goo manager told me that there is an update available for my device, i follow the instruction of it by downloading it
after that it pop up saying that my device need to have an open script recovery, (I searched youtube, they usually use twrp to update the CM custom ROM), so press yes and it started to download + install
There's a small pop up that saying I have installed twrp on my device, but when i press on reboot into recovery, it shows CWM recovery, even I try reboot into recovery by using ROM Manger.
How do I solve this ?
I just want to install TWRP and uninstall CWM as they said TWRP works better with CM version ?
and one small question, can i delete the zip file that i use to flash the ROM in my external sdcard, and the zip file that i have to use to update after flashing them or updating them ?

Cause you need to reflash your recovery.If you downloaded a zip file boot in CWM and flash the recovery zip file.If you downloadeded .tar.md5 file you need to put your phone into download mode ,open odin on your laptop and flash the recovery file (you need to transfer the .tar.md5 file to your laptop).Well you shouldn't delete your current ROM zip file to be honest you should have atleast have one ROM zip file (with the appropriate add ons needed ) just incase you run into trouble you can always flash the ROM from scratch (incase you don't have a back up of it on your sd card) I always keep one touch wiz ROM and one CM11 ROM zip file along with zip files of philz touch and twrp recovery (i don't do nandroid backups-personal choice) on my sd card.

Correct,that's how one replaces their existing recovery with another recovery.At end of flashing the zip file ,go back to main menu and click on "reboot recovery" ,You'll see your new recovery

Thanks you really helped me a lot
sorry for late reply as my replies are limited because im just new to here
By the way, one more question is is there anyway i can flash back to my stock rom but remain rooted?
and what if i want to unroot it
because i found this ROM quite buggy as in the camera app, i am a person that will take picture everyday, panaroma is quite important to me
i found this camera is very very very poor haha
furthermore, whenever in a skype call, i will hear nothing if i plugged in my earphone o.o
so i will probably flash back to stock rom but remain rooted is case of flashing other more stable rom

[Q] SM-P600 Bricked (no recovery)

Hi,
SM-P600 without ROM, without recovery, Kies and Odin doesn't work.
How can I reflash stock ROM or CM12 rom ?
Device : SM-P600 (with samsung rom stock 4.4!?)
I root my tablet with odin and teamwin 2.8.0.0 (PDA field + tar file)
the root flash should success.
I restart in recovery and install custom rom CM12 + Gapp
the tablet restart and stay to CM12 loading during all the night.
I come back into recevery mode
I try to wipe cache/dalvik => unable to mount cache/dalvik
I try to wipe cache => unable to mount cache
I try to wipe system => unable to mount system
I install Kies on my computer and try to restore the official rom with it.
The download of the rom is ok and Kies try to send the rom to the table a transfer is running during 15min (progress bar into computer windows, but no progress bar into tablet).
After that a second transfer progress bar into computer stay to 0% during 1 hour. I unplug my tablet.
Now I have got a table without recovery. I have access to download mode.
But I cannot transfer stock rom (PDA field) with Odin.
Thx for your help.
Staying at your disposal
I can flash recovery mod (TeamWin) with Odin.
But I cannot send Kies tar file by Odin.
I am downloading old stock rom (*tar) to transfer by Odin 3.09
How can I convert a CM12 zip file in tar file to tranfer it (I haven't SD card)
You could use a USB OTG cable (micro USB plug on one end and a socket like the USB ones on a computer on the other), one of these:
http://m.ebay.com.au/itm/301542874539?nav=SEARCH
And use it to plug a USB stick with the zip file on it into your tablet. You would have to mount it in twrp before flashing the zip.
They are a very useful cable to have, if your screen breaks and touch doesn't work you can use it to plug a mouse into the android device and use that for things like backing up your data before repair or disposal.

Hi Dribounet
I have similar issue with my SM-P600.
I have tried 10 official roms , official and custom recoveries also , without success. I am absolutely sure that I am not following correctly the procedure using Odin and its version or combination of this plus wrong official ROM and so on.
Also have tried to use PIT file because I think something goes wrong with the partitions but not success again,
Would you advice with your steps you follow in order to succeed installing custom recovery.
Can I install only the recovery without ROM and how I can run in it ( button combinations)
For now I am just able to run in Download mode and with one official ROM to run the process to the middle- then goes in error with Odin and when reboot the device it shows message "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue ..... "
Thanks in advance for all answers

If you did not do something with it that makes the warranty not valid it is advisable to send it to service, unfortunatelly I have rooted it and they refused to accept it

[Q] stuck after installing firmware

i flashed new firmware to my htc one m8
I got into recovery and changed the name firmware file.
but now in the recovery it doesn't recognize my internal storage, kind of. it says 0 mb.
And when I try via adb to push a file to it it fails. (adb push filename.zip /sdcard/)
so it seems like i only have the external card now working.
what can I do?
I'm currently in the stage where i have the firmware file in the right name and it keeps asking me to update, if i remove the external card, i can get into recovery change the name, and then i see it won't read the internal storage like i wrote up here.
but after I change the name i can get into fastboot mode.
I currently have recovery mode - twrp 2.8.0.3
p.s I think my internal storage does work, cause i can go into recovery mode(twrp), my external_sd was formmated
before i used to update the firmware, so it has nothing except for that file
You're not flashing the firmware through recovery, are you?
No, i flashed, with the guide here, via an external card, changing the name of the firnware so the hboot would recognize it.. and update it

I have TWRP 2.8.0.6. You can download TWRP manager from Play Store, it has a list of TWRP versions you can install. The app installs them too. Everytime I used the app to install it, it says it failed but it actually works, just install, then say ok to the failed install pop up and reboot into recovery and it'll be there.
Edit: As soon as the firmware has flashed successfully, boot up and delete the firmware file off of your external SD card so it doesn't keep asking you to update.

Does a different firmware require different twrp versions?

Not as far as I know. Your best bet man is probably to download an RUU and just flash that through fastboot or the external sd card method. Then after that, flash the TWRP then put a ROM zip on your phone and flash that way.

No, an RUU is a complete system install. Completely stock with the exception of some RUUs contain root. But it will wipe everything on your phone, all your personal data and what not.

I tried to root a AT&T Samsung Galaxy S3 and SuperSu always crash. I can't uninstall.

I tried to root a AT&T Samsung Galaxy S3 and SuperSu always crash. I can't uninstall.
SuperSu always crash. Everything is working fine but the phone isn't rooted. I can disable SuperSu, but not uninstall it. I try to install Update-SuperSu.zip in recovery mode from external storage but it says E: failed-verification update or something like that. I did a factory reset and SuperSu didn't erase or uninstall.
Please I need some advice.

I used Odin 3.07 and following this tutorial http://galaxys3root.com/galaxy-s3-root/how-to-root-galaxy-s3-on-android-4-34-4-2-new/ I download this tar : CF-Auto-Root-d2att-d2uc-samsungsghi747.tar.md5
then Odin show Pass! and that's all. Before that, everything was stock. Sorry if I don't understand, my english isn't so good. And I'm a rookie doing this.
Easiest way to get root would be to flash TWRP in Odin, then flash supersu.zip from TWRP.

No, I realized now that I install cwm, could be? Well, could you guide me in the process to flash twrp and could you give me a link to a direct download of the files needed. Thanks...
CWM is outdated in comparison to TWRP.
Here is the link for tar version of TWRP 2.8.70 for the ATT s3 (d2lte): https://dl.twrp.me/d2att/
I prefer Odin 3.07 for flashing: https://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=...5QWImOPDJboTA_V3D5S9eA&bvm=bv.111677986,d.dmo
Supersu.zip: http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/2014-09-02-supersu-v2-05-t2868133
Place supersu on the phone's internal memory or micro SD card.
How to get root:
place SD card into the phone if you did not save supersu the phone's internal memory;
open Odin, uncheck everything except f.reset time;
connect phone in download mode to computer;
place twrp in PDA slot and flash;
when you see the word "reset" in the status window, remove USB cable, remove battery, replace battery, use button combination to boot into recovery;
flash supersu.zip from TWRP;
reboot and allow supersu to disable knox and update binaries if required.
Hey, Thanks for this info, I have been trying to get twrp on an ATT S3 as well and having problems. The steps above have been a huge help.
Everything seems to be working fine until Odin looks for the pit file. It appears there is not one available to it. The couple that I have found in the forums are dead links now. Does anyone happen to have a pit file for a 16Gb S3 AT&T Model?
Thanks
There is no need to flash a PIT file with TWRP unless there is something wrong that requires a re-partition.
Odin (mac version JOdin) is asking for the pit file when I click start to flash the phone. I can't find a way around it yet.
Are you flashing TWRP in the PDA slot?

Yeah, I downloaded the latest twrp, add it to the pda slot and hit start and it asks for a pit file.
Maybe try using Win7 in vmware to flash? If that doesn't, try and get access to a PC for a few minutes.

I was able to use Heimdall to download a copy of the pit file. But JOdin3 still says its corrupted. I will boot into windows and see if I can get this done.
Report back with the results. Thanks.

CWM is outdated in comparison to TWRP.
Here is the link for tar version of TWRP 2.8.70 for the ATT s3 (d2lte): https://dl.twrp.me/d2att/
I prefer Odin 3.07 for flashing: https://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=...5QWImOPDJboTA_V3D5S9eA&bvm=bv.111677986,d.dmo
Supersu.zip: http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/2014-09-02-supersu-v2-05-t2868133
Place supersu on the phone's internal memory or micro SD card.
How to get root:
place SD card into the phone if you did not save supersu the phone's internal memory;
open Odin, uncheck everything except f.reset time;
connect phone in download mode to computer;
place twrp in PDA slot and flash;
when you see the word "reset" in the status window, remove USB cable, remove battery, replace battery, use button combination to boot into recovery;
flash supersu.zip from TWRP;
reboot and allow supersu to disable knox and update binaries if required.

It's posible to loose some data in this process? I have to do a backup first? It's necesary?
You shouldn't lose any data but it's always a good idea to have a backup of the important items before flashing anything, including stock ROMs.
