hotspot with no root? - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

I have an old 6P, and I want to upgrade to the Pixel 3 when it comes out, but I'm not sure my 6P is going to make it that long.
There are a ton of cheap Pixel XL's out there, but I can only find the Verizon version, and as I've read here, you can't unlock the bootloader.
The only reason I have my phone rooted right now is that I'm on ATT with unlimited data, but I need a hotspot.
So the question is, if I get one of these Verizon Pixel XL's, and I put in my ATT sim, and my hotspot is disabled, is there a way to enable the hotspot without root? Are there workarounds? I guess that's what I'm asking...

Native hotspot with Verizon unlimited data working?

I'm grandfathered into a Verizon unlimited data plan and use the native hotspot on my phone all the time. I understand the native hotspot app worked with most of the Nexus 6P's for those with Verizon UDP and the 5X could be made to work with modding the build.prop. Question I'm anxious to find out is if the Pixel phones native hotspot works with Verizon UDP's or can be modified to do so. Thanks for any info.
The Verizon pixel performs the check to see if hotspot is on your plan. Just verified it with my friend's pixel that came in. You'll probably have to do the build.prop mod. My question is if you can do the mod with the bootloader locked.
This is not what I wanted to hear, might have to send mine back or try and sell since I got mine for a 2 year contract price. I use the tethering a lot in the car for my kids ipads.

Verizon. my guess is the google version will be the same but that's only because i'm going off my experience with the Nexus 6. I got my N6 from Motorola and it still did the subscription check when I put my verizon sim in. I had to modify the build.prop and adb shell command it to get it working. oddly my N7 LTE doesn't perform this check so there is still hope that the Pixel from google store might be different.
My 6P from Google doesn't check on Verizon. Hoping that the Pixel from Google won't check then either. I need that to work as other have said.

FoxFi should work as it worked on s7 edge and note 7 so no need for native tethering

I can confirm my 6P from Google does not perform the check on Verizon and native tethering works on my UDP. I should have my Pixel tomorrow so I will check and see what works, if I can't get Foxfi or the native tether to work it will be for sale or sent back shortly.
I have the 6p Currently and can confirm as well it did not do the subscriber check.. I just got my Pixel XL in the mail from Verizon and I am getting no go with Foxfi (in wifi mode) and The built in tether.
This is not looking good, I wonder if the model from Google will work.

Wow if I cant get tether I will have to sell it immediately. I may just leave it sealed in box until I can get confirmation that tether works on UDP. I don't want to return the phone because I need to be locked in contract so I don't get that $20 price hike on UDP
I am not on Verizon, but in a similar boat with ATT "unlimited". My Google bought N5 worked fine with the built-in hotspot toggle (I don't think it was sold through carriers), but my N6 didn't (it was bought from ATT). If I recall correctly, the N6 checked your SIM card to see what carrier you were on and then restricted the wifi hotspot depending on permissions from the carrier. The N6 would also install bloatware depending on your SIM card. One trick was to not install your SIM card at the initial turn-on. I think that kept the bloatware off, but I am not sure about wifi hotspot functionality. I rooted the N6 and modified two files to get the hotspot to work. If the Pixel hotspot works out of the box, I may not feel the need to root.
Has anyone tried to tether on a Verizon UDP with a pixel purchased through the Google Store?
I don't think anyone has one from the Google store yet

Difference between: Google Pixel XL and VZW Google Pixel XL?

So I am considering getting a Pixel XL to replace my 6P, in doing so my work is also upgrading me from my current "grandfathered UDP" to one of the new Unlimited Plans. I'm cool with this other than the tethering limit of 10gb...I use my phone to tether and stream video on my laptop A LOT. Right now my "grandfathered" plan doesn't know I tether because I am using a Nexus 6P I bought from Google direct.
Can I avoid the 10gb limit by unlocking and flashing stock factory images (so there's no VZW software on the phone) or is it more complicated?

There is no difference in software between the VZ version and Googles other than some minor tweeks for the network.
You won't be able to unlock the VZ version unless VZ messes up and accidentally sends you a Google version. It has happened, but is rare. Again, software is the same. VZ versions are in a database that the phone checks to see if it is authorized to unlock.
I dont know how to bypass the tethering limit, nor do I know how VZ checks that.
Hmm so the VZW version can't be unlocked with adb? That is likely a deal breaker...

I don't lay attention to VZ branded phones anymore. I just get Google phones and use them on VZ. So this is an honest question...what VZ phones these days are unlockable/rootable?
Will your employer buy you the Google version? That is what I had mine do for me.
No they won't, but it's all good. I'll just wait for the Pixel 2 and buy it for $800 like I planned on doing originally. A $200 pixel was just hard to pass up...

No Tethering with Verizon Classic True Unlimited Data Package - Need Options

Received my Pixel 2 XL today, bought the non carrier Google version and not the Verizon Google Store version.
I am on the long gone old classic Verizon Wireless true unlimited plan.
Upgrading from Nexus 6P which worked great on Verizon and tethered right out of the box, just switched it on and it worked
Got the Pixel 2 XL, Popped my Verizon Sim in at boot up as it requests, did full setup, data works, phone calling service works.
Went to turn on tethering and got saw the window say "Checking subscription status". Then says "To use Mobile Hotspot please call customer service to subscribe"
So no tethering for me unless I call Verizon and likely either pay a bunch more a month or get moved to their new unlimited plan, that only allows 10gb of tethering a month.
Suggestions/options/recommendations? I'll get in touch with Google but the phone may be going back.
Wait for root and then edit build.prop

That's what I am hoping for, been rooted and rom'ed since OG Droid due to this until Nexus 6P, which was a real pleasure to be honest to just be on the public channel.

Tethering is $1/day, sometimes less if you have corporate discount. You can use as you wish & not have to worry about anything

I have the play store version and am on Verizon with gf udf. I don't see any warnings like you. I didn't insert a sim until long after I'd setup my phone---used WiFi during initial setup. Maybe you got some carrier bull**** if your sim was in during setup?
I'm wondering the exact same thing. Really want to do this ASAP, can't really use the phone till then... Unless there is an app? FoxFi Maybe?

I just wiped my phone and redid it with no sim inserted in the XL 2, once I put the sim in and turned on the hotspot still got the same provisioning message.
I just put my sim in my son's unlocked Moto G 5+ and hotspot worked just fine.
If we get a lot of reports of hotspot working for people with the old grandfathered unlimited plan maybe it did something to the phone the first time I booted it up with the sim in it.

Just tried my tether again. Turned on. iPad connected to tether. Ran speedtest on ipad. Never got a message about needing a plan or whatever. I also had the Note 8 (unlocked). Did the same setup procedure and had no issues with tether.
Pixel 2 XL
Play store
Unlocked bootloader
Verizon, grandfathered unlimited
Not sure if it matters, I transferred/copied from the Note 8 to the Pixel during setup.
I setup my phone by copying from my existing pixel which was rooted to allow tethering on my vzw gf udp. I fully expected it not to work but to my surprise it worked perfectly. Not sure how or why, but it did and I'm not complaining

Perhaps by copying the data there was a transfer of the user database that holds this setting.
Code:
settings put global tether_dun_required 0
I believe this setting gets changed when you edit the build.prop with the following
Code:
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
Just a thought. No data to back the above.

I have not yet touched the bootloader, so maybe that has something to do with it. Will go look for that process and wipe the phone out (again) and try.
THANKS ALL for the help, much appreciated. That's interesting about getting it to work on Note 8, I thought it was extremely rare to get it to work out of the box on anything but a nexus phone

Tethering doesn't work with Verizon gudp, it didn't work with the first pixels and it doesn't work with the pixel 2 either. People saying it works out of the box either don't have a gudp plan or they have the tethering package on their plan.
Soon enough there will be root or mods available to bypass the subscription check.

Any updates?
And here's a dumb question, I am in the same boat as you I have the old school VZW unlimited data plan and need to tether also and am quite interested in the Pixel 2 XL (despite all the recent crying about the screen), so do I indeed need to get the unlocked version from the Play Store then? And then just pop my sim card in? I guess I am confused on the sim part, can you just pop any VZW sim card into it and it'll fire up recognizing it's your account/number/etc? Are all VZW sim cards identical? I've just never upgraded my phone like this before, getting an unlocked device. I am currently with a Galaxy S6 if that matters at all.

Think I know my plans and phones. Have had the LTE UDP since the HTC thunderbolt. Not sure how soon everyone is getting the tether warning but I'm able to tether. Maybe cuz I copied from unlocked and tetherable note8 during pixel setup. Maybe can my pixel BL was unlocked... Should seem strange.

Verizon gUDP & Hotspot on Unlocked Pixel 3 XL

Purchased a Pixel 3 XL Unlocked in hopes of utilizing my gUDP on Verizon without issue similar to other unlocked phones like PH1 and Note 8. Pixel arrived today, and no go. Does anyone have any clue why this is? Do I have to wait for root to be able to use hotspot? I'd have to have to get rid of the device, but this is a big issue for me.

What's the specific issue you're having? What doesn't work?
Looks like it's doing a subscription check (which with the grandfathered unlimited plan isn't included) and won't allow hotspot to be enabled. I knew buying a Verizon version would likely cause this to happen. Other unlocked devices have worked however without issue.
The Pixel XL is the same way on Verizon. I have one that I purchased directly from Google. In order to get the hotspot working you will need to root the phone and edit the build prop to include this line: net.tethering.noprovisioning=true

That's unfortunate, then keeping updated is a pain isn't it?
How long after launch is root usually obtained?
I bought the pixel from Google and tethering does not work on Verizon like it did with the older phones so it looks like Google is now checking even if you buy unlocked. But with Magisk tethering enabler tethering works. You need to search the forums for the patched version that works with the newest Magisk.

Sorry, off topic; but you still have the old grandfathered unlimited? I used to have it until Verizon forced me off of it for "using too much data". I survived the first wave when they were forcing people off the plan but eventually they had a thing were if you were using over 100GB a month on average they were terminating your line. I consistently used around 300GB a month and sometimes even more so one day I got a notification that they were terminating my line and I needed to "upgrade" (which was really a huge downgrade for more money) to one of the new unlimited lines.
Anyway, Sorry again, I was just shocked to hear people are still on the old school unlimited which the whole time I had it was true unlimited with no throttling. Best plan in cell phone history and I miss it so much :'(

Ok perfect. Maybe I'll keep the device then and wait for root instructions.
Yes still have gUDP. I use it daily at work but tend to keep it under 100gb a month. I don't do any heavy video streaming etc to ensure I stay under each month. They did increase the data to $49.99 over the $29.99. Still no throttling and up to 100gbs can't be beat.

Update:. I performed the initial update using a text editor and no success. I then downloaded buildprop editor and made the change and it worked like a charm. You need to be rooted.

Verizon Hotspot hack with Unlimited Data?

Hey there, I'm strongly considering a Pixel 3a XL for my next phone and I'm one of those people still with grandfathered unlimited data from Verizon and I mainly root my phones just to be able to turn it into a hotspot.
Does this hack exist for the Pixel 3a XL? I just did a search and it didn't come up.
Also open to general thoughts coming from an OG Pixel XL.
Thanks!

You'll need the Props Editor module for Magisk. Simply do a search on how to add tethering with the regular commands by using this module. The normal method by changing the build prop don't work past Oreo.

I'm in the same boat as you (old school unlimited) and use a VZW phone for my back up broadband at work, which right now is a Pixel 3a XL. It's rooted with a custom ROM on it and I've been using it quite a bit, no issues at all with VZW doing anything about the data usage.
Your mileage (or data needs...) may vary.

Hey there. I used these instructions: https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-3a-xl/how-to/how-to-root-pixel-3a-3a-xl-twrp-t3928868
However now with COVID, my speeds are down and I think I read something about VZ being able to tell the difference between data from the phone and data from wifi tethered devices and throttling the hotspot data. That's what I'm investigating now.
I used to be able to stream 2-4 HD streams no problem and now I'm struggling to keep up with just one.
I'm in the same boat as you. Thanks for bringing this question up.
