How to enable "Camera HAL HDR+" (and make sure that CONTROL_ENABLE_ZSL is "true"? 8.1
I can seem to find this option in developer options- does anyway know how to enable?
thanks,
AC
Not yet available, hopefully we see it in a future preview/final.
I can't find this option either. It shows when I search in settings but when I tap it it just takes me to developer options

dev preview 8.1 (opp6) has the option in developer settings for the "camera HAL HDR+"
I see the option in DP2 developer settings, and have it turned on... but what does it do?
I don't really notice anything.

Other people are saying the Google camera app does not call on the hardware api and is still using the software api. A user on reddit used a different camera app and edited its configuration file to call on the visual core and then did a side by side and the difference was huge, many times faster.
How to enable the Pixel Visual Core’s HDR+ feature on Android 8.1

I do not have that option in Deloper mode. I have the latest oero on my pixel 2 XL. Anoyone no why?

if you are on the Feb. update it is now enabled by default, no need for it in dev settings any longer.
Does this mean the stock camera app now uses the visual core? I didn't think it did before, even if you had it enabled in dev.

With the february update not only the stock camera does use it, all other third party apps who target camera api 26 from now on use HDR+ processing, like Instagram, WhatsApp, Snapchat etc.

That option has been there since before the visual core was even announced though ?
I am curious to know if the Pixel Visual core is enabled in the December Android Oreo 8.1 update?

The hdr enhanced photo speed had improved but not major. I hope Google implement more features with future update.
Yes the chip is enabled in the final build however like ram4ufriends said it has to be enabled in development options under Camera HAL HDR+, keep in mind that it only affects third party apps (can confirm that it works in WhatsApp and Instagram), Google Camera does not appear to use it, at least not yet.

https://chromloop.com/2017/12/apk-enable-portrait-mode-nexus-5x6p-og-pixel-phone-google-camera-mod/
Camera NX V7.3 is a Google Camera mod, which is modified to unlock most of the exclusive features of Pixel 2 for Nexus 2015 and original Pixel phones. with this updated version, you can get the Portrait mode working with Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P and Pixel 2016 phones, which was the last Pixel 2’s exclusive feature.
Portrait mode was the most wanted feature for Nexus and Pixel 2016 users. I have considered that Portrait mode is a hardware limiting feature, it requires a special type of image data called PD (Pixel detector?) to enable Portrait mode, but some said Portrait mode can be active with front camera, I began to thinking that this feature should be able to work in software way which we can force to enable it on other phones. Turns out, Google uses PD data to calculate portrait effect on the Back lens while use software method on the Front lens.
We need the camera.experiment2017 library to active the Pixel 2 exclusive functions. thanks to the*Apk changer, the first tool which can deodex the Android 8.1 odex files. I force to enable the PD data model in the camera.experiment2017 library, which is telling camera app to enable Portrait mode. Portrait mode will replace the Lens-blur mode in the menu, it provides the face-retouching feature on both front and back camera, and it needs a human face to do the portrait effect job, it will take two burst photos, one is normal ZSL HDR+ photos, the other is applied the portrait effect. if no human face shows up, you will get one normal photo.
https://chromloop.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Portrait-mode-on-Nexus-5X-with-Camera-NX-mod.png
Camera NX V7.3 is based on Google Camera 5.1.016, why not the latest 5.1.018 version? because they are the same app with different version numbers. I decide to disable the Google photos combination, as it has the black screen issue, though this issue can be solved by totally replace the original Google camera in the system, it needs the same signature and provider name. I also remove the Help and Feedback in settings, and disable the silence feedback service, to make the app launching a little faster.
The new version was tested on my Nexus 5X, should work on Nexus 6P and Pixel 2016 phones too. I will also provide the modified AR Sticker and AR Core app for Nexus 5X/6P, you can use it without change phone model or add files to the system, you can use other AR sticker mod if you like. I was thinking AR Core is still in beta status, bugs like upside down photo on Nexus 5X, too many things need to be fixed in the future, so no need to make it perfect at this moment.

Maybe.. I don't know, but it should work on +7.1. Here working perfect on stock Oreo
Edit: It works only on Oreo
It may convince me to finally make the jump from 7.1.1, does this eliminate the need for phone tilting for background blur now?

Yes it does.
It works exactly like the Pixel 2 camera. Just select Portrait mode and shoot. It also works like a charm with the front camera.
very good results! I am impressed! Thanks for sharing.
I was able to overcome parsing error by using APK editor Pro and changing the SDK version back to 25.
App installs, but hangs every time I launch.
Help would be great

I am using pixel 1 xl
Here is what I have come to prefer, it works only if you are rooted or can edit the following file in any other way. Go into /system/build.prop and change the following,
ro.product.model=Pixel XL to ro.product.model=Pixel 3 XL
ro.product.name=marlin to ro.product.name=crosshatch (2 instances)
This way you get all feature of Pixel 3 and the camera app updates via playstore.

Theoretically someone briliant cound make it possible to work.
But google camera uses special snapdragon processor architecture command (which dont have mtk). It is designed for snapdagon and almost every port of google camera use the same command to work and work only on snadragon processor. Google camera oryginally is designed for snapdragon google pixels.
ONE IMPORTANT NOTE FOR PEOPLE WHO SAY, THAT GOOGLE CAMERA WORK on this phone
Yes, it work but WITHOUT HDR+ mode, then dont work HDR+ need snapdragon, this part of google camera
I saw in some app that is enabled
