I am trying to encrypt but there is a bug in the firmware. It simpy reboots.
Is it a problem in the rom (latest xiaomi.eu miui 10) or am I doing something wrong?
THank you
Afaik all current MIUI custom ROMs have encryption disabled
I hope we'll eventually get some working AOSP/LineageOS ROM instead of MIUI crap
you mean for Mi Max 3, right?
In other xiaomi phones, it is possible.
Yep
I've tried multiple available ROMs several weeks ago, none had it, so I had to stay on chinese miui 10. They are probably using this script https://build.nethunter.com/android-tools/no-verity-opt-encrypt/
I'm not sure why they had to use it. I know, currently TWRP cannot manipulate encrypted data partition on latest Android versions because of dm-verity thing, but that doesn't look like sufficient reason to disable encryption for me. Maybe they have some other reasons when making custom ROMS idk.
Are you asking about "Additional Setting > Privacy > Encrption & credentials" , mine shown as 'Phone encrypted'
I'm on CN ROM 8.8.3 with EU MIUI 8.8.9_v10-8.1.

Yes, but it is not.
The phone needs to be charged at least al 95% and be connected to power. Then the button is enabled. It restart, and nothing happens.
I need to install a MDM to access my company email and agenda. The MDm tries to apply the encription and doesn't let me progress. The result: I have the Max 3 in a drawer
Ok;
YES YOU CAN.
It took me two days to find out why and how. but here is the fix: you need to resize your data partition so that it will have 32kb of free space.
Instructions here:
https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/146081/how-to-resize-the-data-f2fs-partition
it does work for me; and I suggest you try it. I am running BenzoROM with Android Pie, unlocked bootloader and the 6GB variant. YMMV.

Well, mostly. Meaning: I'm not sure quick-charge works (haven't tried it), bluetooth calling is meh (worked once and failed once) and screen flickers at brightness changes.
You do need to replace the stock camera with open camera. But apart from that? well, you get clean android 9.0 experience with no other flaws.
Hello!
Anybody tried this with xiaomi.eu roms ?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=77814314&postcount=8
Not working for me on the latest xiaomi.eu build.
Even though it said encryption was fixed in the change log.

When I try to encrypt device, screen just is going black for a 2-3 seconds and back to home screen. Doesn't even reboot.
Have you got the same issue?
Encryption also works on xiaomi.eu 8.12.13
Here is what I did (to the best of my memory, try at your own risk!):
- Reset to "fastboot ROM" Global 9.6.6 (the version my phone was shipped with).
- Flashed TWRP
- Wiped data, dalvik, and cache
- Flashed eu 8.12.13
- Flashed Magisk
- setup phone, etc
After that, I encrypted the phone via the settings menu (search for encrypt). Works just fine.
However currently there is one problem. All TWRP versions for Mi Max 3 can not access the data partition, because TWRP does not know how to decrypt the data partition in Pie. So you won't be able to flash anything that needs access to the data partition But a future TWRP will fix this, hopefully soon ...

So, it's better to wait for new TWRP. But what with ARB? Is any possibility to check it on Mi Max 3? getvar anti in fastboot doesn't work. I know Xiaomi.eu roms have ARB. I bought my phone (6/128) flashed with Global rom 10.0.1.0. Is anywhere list which versions of anti are in roms? I wonder if flashing Global dev 8.12.13 with fastboot method and after that flashing xiaomi.eu 8.12.13 could resolve problem with encryption. Maybe I'l try.

Developer @nijel8 has released a new TWRP which can decrypt user data now
The below is a guide to installing GSI images on the Mi 8 Pro. I specifically have experience with the PixelExperience 9.0 (Unofficial) but have had other GSI ROMs booting and working. I hope this is useful for some.
GSI (Generic System Image) ROMS can be flashed to any Project Treble enabled device. These devices have either an A/B partition layout (these allow for seamless updating as the system can boot from A or B partition) or just an A only partition layout. The Mi 8 Pro is an arm64 a only device and support project treble ROMs. You can choose from suitable ROMs listed here and here.
The instructions given below are for Android Pie (9.0). The same basic setup can be used for Android Oreo (8.0, 8.1) ROMs, but the Mi 8 Pro should be flashed with the appropriate Xiaomi base ROM first before flashing any 8 based GSI ROM
As the ROM development for the Mi 8 Pro is basically dead, I decided to buy a OnePlus 6T and sell my Mi 8 Pro. However, due to having my new OnePlus 6T stolen, and due to a lack of funds to buy a new device, I have revived my Mi 8 Pro to try to get something other than MIUI working on it. I now have The PixelExperience (Unofficial) GSI ROM running very smoothly on my Mi 8 Pro.
As the PixelExperience team has stated they will be delivering GSI images again, if there are enough of us asking, we could get better support for things like the fingerprint sensor, for a more complete experience.
Some of the below steps may be unnecessary, but are there for a complete beginner's guide to doing this and getting the right results.
Working:
WiFi
Bluetooth (with APTX)
NFC (Including Google Pay)
RIL
Mobile data (LTE / HSPDA / 3G / EDGE)
GPS
Camera (with camera built in to ROM, as well as some GCAM implementations)
Video Camera (not working on GCAM implementations tested so far - only working on Camer built in to ROM)
Flashlight
Sound / Vibrations
Face Unlock
Hotspot
Not Working:
VoLTE (I have had it working, but unable to end phone calls and problems receiving SMS messages, so reverted)
Fingerprint (There is some support. The fingerprint area of the screen lights up when trying to enrol a new fingerprint. The screen dims when a finger is placed on the sensor, and a green light us emitted from the sensor area, but it does not register the fingerprint and this is not currently working.)

How to install
Flash the latest Fastboot Global Stable Android PIE (9.0) ROM for the Mi 8 Pro. (eg. equuleus_global_images_V10.3.4.0.PECMIXM_20190712.0000.00_9.0_global_9a181f79c1.tgz) using the Xiaomi Tool.
Update: Use the latest MIUI system. The contents of the vendor partition are important. The most compatible vendor partition as of 2019-08-19 is from equuleus_global_V10.3.5.0.PECMIXM. You can download and flash that vendor independantly, if you have already set up your GSI image.
Reboot and finish basic MIUI setup.
Reboot to recovery.
[*]Format data (Wipe - Advanced - format data - confirm by typing yes)
DO NOT FORMAT DATA. Just perform a factory reset. Formatting data can cause issues and prevent booting.
Wipe Cache - Dalvik Cache and System
Reboot recovery
Use adb to push PixelExperience GSI image (img file extracted from download) and latest version of Magisk to root of SDCard. (Empty due to formatting data).
("adb push c:\path\system.img /sdcard/" and then "adb push c:\path\Magiskv19.3.apk /sdcard/")
Flash the image to system partition by taping INSTALL and then on the "Install Image" button (to toggle between flashing zip and img files). Do not reboot yet.
Flash magisk zip in the normal way (hit the same button as in previous step to show zip files to flash. (This is necessary to avoid bootloops)
Reboot, and enjoy.
You can now set up your "PixelExperience" device with your apps and settings, including registering a face for face unlock.
To pass cts validation for the safetynet and to allow service such as Google Pay to work
In Magisk, under settings - Find “Magisk Hide” and toggle the switch on
Magisk restarts. Go to Magisk Hide from the Magisk menu and ensure that...
Google Pay
Google Play
Google Play Services
Google Service Framework
Any Banking Apps
...are checked so that they cannot see Magisk (canont see phone as rooted).
Now go to downloads and install the SafetyPatch v3 module (created by hackintosh5).
Reboot.
Open settings - go to apps and notifications - and find the above apps to clear all data.
Enjoy your rooted safetynet compliant, as close to stock as possible Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro.

Face unlock works fine. I have it paired with Pick to wake phone - so when I pick it up it wakes up to allow face unlock.
However, be prepared for some investment of time (not for face unlock).... I am a bit stuck now and cannot reproduce the above to get this working. Sometimes the results are different depending on base ROM etc.
Share how you get on and anything you may need to do to get this working.
Thanks
Nice work, i will try it .
The mi8 pro 's fingerprint is so bad which can be ignored, and the face unlock is the mostly used, hahahah
thank you very much for your work
Hi, I am waiting to unlock bootloader. Need 148hrs. Will install this. Thanks for sharing.
Quick update: There are some issues with GSI ROMs and the Mi 8 Pro. SOe of these relate to the SIMcard settings - and selection of preferred SIM for data, calls etc.
My experience shows that the vendor image from equuleus_global_V10.3.5.0.PECMIXM fixes many of these. The vendor image from the original MIUI ROM is used with the GSI system image to make the whole Project treble stuff work. I advise flashing this latest vendor image for maximum compatibility.
Do you know what issues remain after flashing the latest vendor image?
Does the face unlock on Pixel Experience work with IR camera or front cam?
I tried installing this and it got stuck on the loading screen with the Google logo. I tried following your instructions and a few other ways and couldn't get it to work at all i'm also not able to root my phone at all. When ever I try rooting my phone just reboots to twrp until I reflash the ram or flash the magisk uninstaller.
Do you have any tips, tricks, or suggestions I might try?
Thanks!

Have experienced this on occasion also.
What GSI image have you tried? after my multiple efforts, I would recommend... in this order: Omni. HavocOS, Descendant(no future updates), PIxelExperience. I am hopeful about the PixelExperience team who have made an announcement that as of August they will no longer produce CAF versions of PixelExperience, and that they will maintain regular GSI builds also. PE official GSI - I am full of hope.
Anyway, back on topic: Try this.
Follow the instructions - a few precisions:
Use XiaoMiFlash to flash the equuleus_global_images_V10.3.4.0 as a base. You can update the vendor partition once you have GSI up and running, but don't let the MIUI update to 10.3.5. Ensure you define a PIN to make sure that data partition is encrypted. (everyone should use encryption nowadays, and besides, I have had bad experiences whn using a xiaomi eu or mi-globe ROM (unencrypted) as the base
Reboot and finish basic MIUI setup. - What I mean here is to let the ROM boot, don't have to sign in to Google or Mi, but get to the home screen after the initial setup.
Then reboot fastboot and flash TWRP 3.3.0. Search for TWRP-3.3.0-0504-XIAOMI8UD-CN-wzsx150.zip.
Boot to TWRP. Make sure that you are able to decrypt the data partition with the PIN you set earlier. If TWRP does not ask you for the passcode / PIN - something is wrong. Try again. ONce all is OK in TWRP, perform factory reset. (DO NOT FORMAT DATA for the aforementioned encryption reason).
adb push the img file.
adb push the Magisk 19.3 zip.
Flash both in TWRP
Reboot TWRP
Reboot system. If it appears to hang, after 5 minutes you can force restart with the power button. I have had the ROM boot OK after second boot only?
Pretty sure that if you strictly follow the above you should get a working GSI image on Mi 8 Pro. Let me know...
It's a bit flaky to set up, but once set up, apart from fingerprint sensor not working, very stable and lovely to have the stock ish android system on a MIUI phone!
Be careful with preferred network type for mobile network as some selections have messed up incoming SMS messages for me... a dealbreaker.
What happens when you flash Magisk? What does TWRP say? Have you tried flashing Magisk, rebooting TWRP, and flahing Magisk again? It may be a TWRP version issue?
Thanks for your reply!
The version of twrp you mention is what I have used. I have not tried installing then rebooting to twrp so I try that.
When flashing magisk it usually flashes fine (I have had a couple times where it just throws an error) then when I reboot the phone will boot past the Mi logo the the Android boot logo then after 10-15 sec. it just reboots to twrp.
I was finally able to get the twrp to stick across boots by flashing twrp, signing boot image, removing twrp then reboot to Miui.
Do I need to adb push the GSI image or should it be fine to install from a USB drive?
The SMS issue isn't really a big deal for me as I use Google Fi routed through hangouts for one sim and a local sim where I'm living for mostly data and a few phone calls for the second one
Thanks so much for this post. I was completely oblivious to the fact that the Mi 8 Pro would actually be different to the Mi 8 when it comes to custom roms. When I decided on my next phone, I read the positive reviews and saw enough Mi 8 roms to be willing to make a switch to Xiaomi. Until I read your post I was close to despairing as I don't want a Xiaomi rom on my phone for various reasons (among them is the fact that I don't trust them and the way they have decided to collect user data).
I've tried to follow your guide in every step (I've also flashed the updated vendor.img), but unfortunately I have not been able to install the Pixel Experience rom on my device. I do see the boot animation but it never stops, I'm forever stuck with the Google-G and the progress bar below it. Has anyone else managed to install the Pixel Experience rom on the Mi 8 Pro? If yes, did you follow the guide here or did you do something else?
Also, in your initial post you write that we should wipe the system in TWRP but as far as I can tell GSI roms need you to wipe data, cache and dalvik cache but not the system partition (if you do it, you also don't get asked for your PIN code in TWRP any more, which - as you said - indicates that something went wrong).
Did you install a particular version of the Pixel Experience rom? Maybe that might be part of my issue?
I have try many times installing it. Didn't manage to boot it up.
Finally, tested with Miroom ROM as base then flash the system.img manage to boot up.
Don't know why it didn't boot but at lease any one who have issue booting may want to try using Miroom rom as base.

Hi, I am using a Chinese version. But once you unlock it you will be able to flash any version with the twrp.
I try rooting it with magisk but unable to boot up. That's why I turn to Miroom Rom. They have done something which can boot it up.

What version of TWRP are you using?
My XT1795 is on stock 8.1 with unlocked BL, TWRP and magisk (I haven't installed any modules though). I am facing this weird issue since an year, the WiFi randomly keeps disconnecting and reconnecting automatically every 10 to 15 mins. I am sure that it has nothing to do with my WiFi router as I face the same issue when I am connected to mobile hotspots or any public or private network. I tried resetting the wifi and network settings, restored the device quite a few times, and also reflashed the stock rom but the problem still exists. The most recently that I reflashed the stock rom was a month ago, i didn't face any issue for the first 15 days but now it's back again.
Can someone please help me?
Try using a different kernel. But make sure that stock 8.1 is supported

Please have a look at the logcat, this morning while generating this log the wifi network ([email protected]) disconnected and reconnected atleast 3 times. Even after the reconnection, most of times I am not able to access the internet, I have enable airplane mode, then enable the wifi again or reboot the device. I am sure there is no problem with my router because, I face the same issue when ever I connect to any network be it a mobile hotspot or railway public network.

As far as I have seen this is what's concerning:
1
E/WifiVendorHal( 2001): stopRssiMonitoring(l.2156) failed {.code = ERROR_NOT_AVAILABLE, .description = }
Some vendor realted stuff is just gone.
2
W/WifiConfigManager( 2001): Looking up network with invalid networkId -1
The NetworkID (probably which decides which network it tries to connect to) is ****ed
3
E/wpa_supplicant( 3589): wpa_driver_nl80211_driver_cmd: failed to set RXFILTER option I/QCNEJ/CndHalConnector( 2569): -> SND notifyRatConnectionStatusChanged(rat = 1, DISCONNECTED)
Yeah I think drivers are just ****ed
I would personally suggest 2 things
1. Install lineage 15.1
2. Re-install stock
Alternatively to 2:
Factory reset, could fail though due to magisk and force-encrypt

This problem started after I unbricked my phone few months ago. I flashed an older version of bootloader on my XT1795 which lead to a complete breakdown, the phone was unable to boot, I had to flash mmcblk0.tar and this rom on a 32GB sd card and booted from it so as to flash a new stock rom on the int storage. After all those efforts the phone booted up but I started having this WiFi issue.
I'll try installing lineage OS because , I have tried reinstalling stock 2 times and even factory reset-ed the device. Thanks alot for responding.
Edit : I have flashed the LineageOS 15.1, will update if the problem persists.

I am being forced now to roll back to the stock rom from twrp backup.
When it is like that even on lineage, try downgrading to nougat and see if the error persists, I also have this problem now btw... I'm on Android 9 though
If the error doesn't persist, upgrade back to Oreo. And see if it's fixed, if not, then I'll have to try around a little bit by myself
Also, me being on Android P with Radium, it isn't really a kernel issue.
I just cant decide what it is,
Also, don't use the "stable" build advertised pretty recently in jarl's lineage 16 thread, it isn't stable
(Bruh)
I will try downgrading to Oreo and see if the error persists for me.

1.
Now I flashed stock 8.1 (fresh flash) on the lineage 15.1. The wifi problem is still there. Like you said, the last way could be downgrading to Android Nougat but I am scared it could hard brick the device. Why I am saying this is I did a downgrade 7-8 months ago, which bricked the phone and led me to Blank Flash 7.1 srock rom to finally make it boot, it was then this wifi issues started. It was a disaster, later I came to know that downgrading bootloader from from a new version of rom to an older version will mostly end up in dead devices. :highfive:
2.
So do you still think I need try downgrading once again ?

We have one last resort,
G. S. I
If that doesn't work, then it's due to isp's being overloaded from all the streaming which is happening.
For me, it started when testing an "stable" (*cough cough* it isn't *cough cough*)
Lineage update
Install latest , non wiktor build of lineage 16.0 builddate
20200208
Or the gsi "optimized" 2019070X build
And then installing a pie (or Q) GSI of choice

Please try to run this command in terminal emulator, while wifi is on.
Code:
su
killall wpa_supplicant
This will kill all the active connections and reconnect to current network, I read on linux foums that this fixed the wifi issue at least temporarily.

Okay okay. I got the.. ahem... "Fix" for the issue.
Basically, when reinstalling almost everything (except firmware)
It just fixed itself? I dont know how it just did.
Try reinstalling Lineage 15.1 or 16 (jarl's builds, wiktors cause more problems aka Lineage 16.0 v0.16 instead of 0.17)
And then installing a GSI of choice. If you didnt look that up yet, basically, you know how on a PC, no matter the hardware, you can install windows on it without device specific ****? Yeah that's project treble, allowing installation of updates and ROMs using .img files.
Luckily, our Lineage 16.0 builds (and only those) have full support for treble, so, just download a rom of choice, RR for example, extract it using an application like RAR and then wipe ONLY
/System & /Data NOT FORMAT
Wipe>advanced wipe> select system and data
This won't erase Internal storage just uninstall all apps and stuff
And then head to where you extracted the .img file and select "flash zip" in the bottom right corner
It should now switch to: "install Image"
And the extracted file should show up.
Select it, select "system image" and flash
Don't worry about it saying: " NO OS INSTALLED" And blah blah blah. The phone will take care of it, unless it crashes, then the rom isn't compatible with our specific device.

If the launcher for example is lagging, try adding this line
Sys.use.fifo_ui=1
Into build.prop and rebooting, maybe that makes it better
Hey guys im currently testing some customs roms, since stock roms after A8.1 suck and i would like to know how to backup my phone.
I am using TWRP 3.5.0_9-1 Unofficial and in Backup menu i can see many partitions.I thought i should backup Boot/System/Data but im not sure.
I would also like to know if i can backup a stock rom the same way.

As far as I know, there is no TWRP capable of decrypting your partitions so I think making a backup of stock is not possible.
If you have a custom ROM without encryption, you should backup at least boot/system/data but backing up the other partitions as well can't hurt.
To my understanding that specific recovery can decrypt my partitions. It just asks me for my pin and once i enter it i can see all my files.I am using LOS 18.1 btw and it is encrypted.

Then the encryption on LOS is probably different from the stock encryption. Because all recoveries I tried on stock were unable to decrypt.

One question: are you also using Android Auto on LOS18.1? If so, does it work?
I'm looking for a custom ROM where AA works but every single one I tried fails to connect to my car. Only stock makes a connection to my car.
I got a 95 Civic VTI so i wouldn't know about AA
But bluetooth works just fine.I also tested many stock roms but i got bluetooth pairing issues except Android 8.1 based Roms.
This is where i got TWRP and the dev states that decryption works and it does at least on custom roms i don't know about stock.

When using a custom ROM, the phone connects just fine for calling, music streaming etc (via bluetooth) but it won't connect via the USB cable for Android Auto.
Thanks for your input anyway.
Today I was working with an XT1792, (yes too old) and it has 32GB while the roms are 3GB at most, but when enabling treble via LineageOS 16 treble and flashing a GSI PIE, it occupied an unbelievable 19GB, AospEX and AOSiP Pie. This is normal? what did i do wrong? the problem is in the fact that you have flashed A-Only?
When I was writing this I decided to go back to twrp and format data and it was back to normal.
After installing and restarting, I deleted the data through the settings to later configure and test the phone, I thought that formatting data was no longer necessary, but I will post and leave it here because if a newbie like me is faced with a similar question, there is where to find another answer among many here....thanks to everyone working on GSI and custom Roms, especially AOSP devs.
